Dennis Itumbi's Arrest: Lessons on Principles, Integrity, and Humanity

When Dennis Itumbi, a prominent and controversial Kenyan figure, appears in the news, it often sparks intense public debate. Known for his polarizing past, today’s incident involving his arrest at City Hall raises more questions than answers. Details from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) remain scarce, but the event offers critical lessons for personal and public life.

The Context

Itumbi's journey has been tumultuous. A former communications strategist for President Uhuru Kenyatta, he played a pivotal role in shaping the president's narrative, particularly during the contentious 2017 elections. However, after the elections, and a reshuffling of the president's communication team, Itumbi's political fortunes dwindled, eventually relegating him to a less significant role outside State House.

In a past instance, Itumbi’s actions led to challenges for various platforms, including this one. Yet, I refrained from critiquing him at his lowest because I believe in a principle: never kick someone when they’re down.

Key Lessons

1. Principles Are Crucial

Talent and skill can take you far, but without unwavering principles, longevity in success is unlikely. The pressure to compromise for survival is immense, but certain boundaries must never be crossed.

2. Kindness Is Strategic

As one rises to power or success, treating people with respect and humility is essential. The same people you meet on your way up could play a crucial role in your life when circumstances change.

3. Do the Right Thing, Even at a Cost

Life often presents difficult choices, where doing the right thing may have adverse consequences. However, maintaining integrity is non-negotiable. If working for a government or organization forces actions that weigh heavily on your conscience, it’s better to step aside.

Current Allegations

Recent reports suggest that Itumbi’s arrest may relate to a controversial letter alleging an assassination plot against the Deputy President, William Ruto. This letter, dismissed by some as fake, has placed Itumbi at the center of investigations. The DCI has reportedly sought international help to trace its origin. While Itumbi’s role in this matter is unclear, it highlights the need for investigators to approach such sensitive issues with neutrality and thoroughness, prioritizing the truth over politics.

Broader Implications

This saga transcends Itumbi and delves into the worrying trajectory of investigative agencies in Kenya. The tendency to prioritize finding the source of controversial information over addressing the substance of the claims is troubling, especially when lives could be at risk. Such practices erode public trust and fuel political divisions.

A Call for Balanced Analysis

While I hold personal reservations about certain leaders, including the Deputy President, my analysis remains impartial. Human rights and fairness should prevail regardless of political affiliations. Ultimately, if God intends for a leader to ascend, no human effort can thwart that destiny.

Itumbi’s case serves as a reminder of life’s unpredictability and the enduring importance of principles, respect, and doing the right thing. As this story unfolds, it provides lessons for all of us in navigating our personal and professional lives with integrity.
