Much has been said about Kenya’s founding father, Jomo Kenyatta. After 15 years of extensive research into his life and presidency, I’ve uncovered fascinating stories, many of which are detailed in my book, Dark Secrets of the Kenyan Presidency. While the book is currently free for a limited time, I’ll share some key highlights here.
Jomo Kenyatta was a remarkably wise leader. Numerous anecdotes from his presidency, several of which are included in the book, demonstrate his intelligence and decision-making abilities. Even as he aged and perhaps became somewhat out of touch, he remained the "Grand Old Man of Africa." Notably, his wisdom extended to mentoring others, including his son, Uhuru Kenyatta, who would eventually become president. Jomo seemed to have foreseen his son's political future. For the full story, you can check the book or one of my previous recordings, but suffice it to say, Jomo’s influence extended far and wide.
Let me share one specific example to illustrate his wisdom. There was once a strict and incorruptible police officer named Magaria, who was stationed at the Nairobi Traffic Headquarters during the 1970s. Unlike many officers of his time, Magaria refused to accept bribes and adhered strictly to the law. This commitment, however, landed him in trouble when he impounded vehicles belonging to influential figures within Jomo Kenyatta’s inner circle.
One day, Magaria received a summons to meet the president at State House Nakuru. Understandably anxious, Magaria went, fully expecting serious consequences. Upon arrival, he was made to wait for some time before Jomo Kenyatta finally appeared, walking confidently with his cane.
When the president sat down, he didn’t immediately address the issue. Instead, he simply asked, “What is your name, young man?” Magaria responded, and to his surprise, Jomo burst into laughter. For a moment, Magaria stood there, confused and nervous. After the laughter subsided, the president commended him, saying, “You’re doing an excellent job. If we had more officers like you, this country would be in a much better place. Well done. Keep up the good work.”
It became clear that Jomo Kenyatta had no intention of reprimanding him but rather wanted to show support for Magaria’s integrity. This meeting also served as a subtle warning to those who had tried to undermine the officer by using their influence.
This is just one of many stories that showcase Jomo Kenyatta’s wisdom and ability to navigate complex situations. He was a leader who made decisions with great foresight and clarity.
