The year 2024 has barely begun, yet events are unfolding at an alarming rate. One of the most shocking incidents took place in Kisii County, where violence erupted, reportedly involving automatic firearms. Videos of the chaos show Kisii Governor Simba Arati taking cover in a maize plantation as the rally was disrupted, with several individuals sustaining injuries. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
This incident has thrust South Mugirango legislator Sylvanus Osoro into the spotlight again. While Osoro distanced himself from the violence, eyewitness accounts and past controversies paint a troubling picture. In 2022, Osoro was captured on video attacking a political rival during a rally. Additionally, in November 2023, he made inflammatory remarks about soliciting bribes from MPs for travel approvals, drawing the attention of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The use of automatic weapons during the Kisii rally raises significant concerns. Under Kenyan law, such firearms are strictly reserved for security personnel, further complicating the narrative. Critics argue that the handling of such cases underscores selective justice, as high-profile individuals often escape accountability.
Yet, this season appears to be different. Across Kenya and the globe, there seems to be a swift reckoning for those who once acted with impunity. From powerful individuals to ordinary criminals, past misdeeds are catching up with them in unexpected ways. This trend serves as a warning: no matter how influential one might seem, the consequences of wrongdoing are inevitable.
Kenyans have witnessed similar downfalls in the past. From former cabinet ministers who exploited their power for personal gain to corrupt officials who amassed wealth at the expense of the public, history reminds us that justice is not always immediate but often unavoidable.
The message is clear: this is not the season for greed or exploitation. For those still engaging in questionable practices, the year 2024 promises exposure and accountability. For the innocent and long-suffering citizens, patience and resilience will be rewarded.
As Kisii County processes the recent turmoil, and Kenya navigates this turbulent season, one truth remains—integrity and justice must prevail, for the benefit of every Kenyan.
