A Call for Unity and Reflection Amid Political Uncertainty in Kenya

Now, to the pressing question many have asked: what is Raila Odinga’s next move, and how will the Jubilee Party respond? It’s clear that Jubilee has been keeping its cards close to its chest, avoiding full disclosure of its strategy. This is expected in politics; revealing one’s entire game plan to opponents would be unwise.

Let us analyze the situation. Recently, Jubilee reinstated Raila Odinga’s security detail, which had been withdrawn months earlier. Curiously, the new detail is larger than before. This begs the question: why now? What prompted this change? To many observers, this move seems poorly calculated, raising suspicions about Jubilee’s intentions.

In the political chessboard—or, for simplicity, the board game of drafts—Jubilee appears to have run out of strategic moves. Each move they make is countered decisively by NASA. In a political sense, Jubilee now stands cornered, with only one viable piece left on the board.

This dynamic becomes even clearer when discussing negotiations. For effective negotiations, both sides must bring something of value to the table. NASA holds considerable leverage: public goodwill and undeniable strength in numbers. Conversely, Jubilee’s position is weak, as their mandate lacks legitimacy in the eyes of many. The 2017 elections were marred by allegations of rigging, with the Supreme Court nullifying the first round and NASA boycotting the second.

Jubilee’s lack of bargaining power leaves them with limited options. One is for President Kenyatta to step down, paving the way for an interim government to organize credible elections. Alternatively, Jubilee could attempt to govern by force—suppressing opposition and ruling with an iron hand.

NASA, on the other hand, has been methodical in its approach, carefully planning its next steps. Recent resolutions illustrate this: they refuse to recognize the October 26, 2017, elections, reaffirm Raila Odinga as the legitimate president, and advocate for citizen sovereignty. NASA has also planned a swearing-in ceremony for Raila, alongside a memorial for victims of police brutality—a stark contrast highlighting the current political divide.

This situation places Jubilee in a precarious position. For example, NASA’s planned “prayer meeting” has forced the government into a constitutional quandary: banning it would infringe on religious freedom. This clever maneuver underscores NASA’s strategic foresight.

How long can this stalemate persist? Change is inevitable. The coming days, especially around the planned events, will be pivotal in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
