One of the most shocking aspects that came out of the interview with editors by former president Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta was what happened between Uhuru and Ruto after the 2017 presidential elections and its contribution to the fallout between the two.
For the very first time Uhuru talked about this and the shocking revelations took Kenyans completely by surprise.
What the former president said was that after the 2017 presidential elections, Ruto (then the deputy president) was very determined that the government
work aggressively and in a brutal manner towards completely destroying the opposition which was at that time Raila and his NASA brigade.
Uhuru responded that he did not want to ever go back to the ICC at the Hague for whatever reason and therefore he strongly resisted their government going in that direction.
It is clear that what Ruto wanted was to clear the way for his smooth sailing in the 2022 presidential elections with little opposition because he had already identified Raila as a threat to his political ambitions.
Interestingly, according to my information the fallout between Uhuru and Ruto started even before that. Which suggests that what the former president was referring to here was probably the last straw in the political and personal relationship between the two men. The initial fallout actually happened between 2015 and 2016.
And according to very reliable sources, it had something to do with finances and therefore it is something highly sensitive and I don't believe it's the sort of thing that the former president can ever talk about.
But then we also know that in the run-up to the 2017
presidential elections, William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta had a kind of truce to enable them face the presidential elections together. And we also know that William Samuel Ruto was put in charge of the campaigns and in charge of running the election for the Jubilee party.
We also know the violence and the brutality that emerged from that campaign. Most will remember the Baby Pendo saga (toddler lost to police brutality) the murder of Chris Msando who was incharge of IT at the IEBC then.
Kenyans will remember the many other nasty things which happened during that presidential election.
Now, super fascinatingly in the press interview with editors Uhuru Kenyatta told the press that it reached a point where despite pressure from Ruto he stubbornly refused to go ahead with this plan of completely destroying the opposition. And according to Uhuru, that was where he fell out completely with Ruto.
This happened according to my information sometime in late December 2017 or early January 2018, because in any case by the time the mock swearing in of Raila Odinga came about late in January 2018, the duo had fallen out.
And that neatly explains why the mock swearing in went on peacefully and nothing happened. Based on the information Uhuru gave it means that had the fall out not happen by then, then something crazy would have happened during Raila's swearing in at Uhuru park.
Now this Uhuru revelation is very relevant to what is unfolding in the country at the moment...
