Who Do Terrorists Work For?

Guest Post by Blogger Mwarang'ethe

In the recent past, we have rejected the common wisdom that terrorists are Muslims fanatics working on behalf of their fellow Muslims, i.e. “framework of orientation.” Some readers of this blog have refused to take these assertions seriously. We revisit the story of the “Nigerian terrorist” who “attempted” to bomb the plane on the way to the USA on 25th December, 2009. We hope by the end of this piece, many will be more enlightened as to who these “terrorists” work for and why.

We start with an article appearing in the New York Times by Eric Lipton, Eric Schmit and Mark Mazzetti on 17th January, 2010. The title of the article is “Review of Jet Bomb Plot Shows More Missed Clues, available here.

Firstly, they tell us that, worried about possible terrorist attacks over the Christmas period, Obama met with senior security and intelligence officials on 22nd December, 2009. In a separate meeting, on the same day, Obama was informed of disturbing intelligence from Yemen that Al-Qaeda operatives were preparing to attack the USA especially on Christmas day. However, as we are told, for “unknown reasons”, “no one could connect the dots.”

This was despite the fact that, a UN expert on Al-Qaeda had in September warned USA policy makers that the same device that had been used in Saudi Arabia in an attempted assassination could be carried aboard a plane. More so, in November, 2009, the USA intelligence learned by “intercepting communications” from Yemen that a man named “Umar Farouk” had volunteered for a coming operation. Please note that these two names are the first two names of this Nigerian.

Furthermore, in later December, these so called “Al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen” mentioned the 25th December as the “good date” and suggested that they “looking for ways to get somebody out” or “for ways to move people to the West,” according to one senior administration official.

Going further, according to Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball of the Newsweek, “A White House report on the foiled Christmas Day attempted airliner bomber provided only the sketchiest of details about what may have been the most politically sensitive of its findings: how the White House itself was repeatedly warned about the prospect of an attack on the U.S. homeland by Al Qaeda operatives in Yemen.” Furthermore, they tell us that, “Still, the report refers, obliquely, to what appear to be significant information that had not previously been disclosed by the White House: U.S. intelligence analysts had “highlighted” an evolving “strategic threat” that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula or AQAP (as the group in Yemen is known) “posed to the U.S. homeland.” See the story here.

However, the “shocker” came during hearings before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee when current Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), Michael E. Leiter, made a startling admission. According to the Congress Daily, it was reported that on 22nd January, 2010, the intelligence officials “have acknowledged the government knowingly allows foreigners whose names are on terrorist watch lists to enter the country in order to track their movement and activities."

Leiter is reported to have informed this Committee that: "I will tell you, that when people come to the country and they are on the watch list, it is because we have generally made the choice that we want them here in the country for some reason or another."

Furthermore, according to Congress Daily reporter Chris Strohm citing unnamed "intelligence official" confirmed that Leiter's statement reflected government policy and told the publication, "in certain situations it's to our advantage to be able to track individuals who might be on a terrorist watch list because you can learn something from their activities and their contacts."

When this saga started, the USA officials disclosed to the world that the Customs and Border Protection agency learned about Abdulmutallab only after the manifest for Northwest Flight 253 had been generated and the plane took off.

However, we now know this not true. We now know that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency had information about alleged terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab three days before his departure from Amsterdam to Detroit. This is in accordance with the U.S rules that Under U.S. rules, airlines must transmit "passenger name record" data on passengers 72 hours before a flight leaves for the United States. According to Chris Strohm of the CongressDaily, the United States, and Delta, parent company of Northwest Airlines, met that time line for Abdulmutallab, according to officials. In fact, the Delta spokeswoman Susan Elliot was emphatic, "We were compliant with all requirements for submitting passenger information as it relates to the vetting process."

Now, considering that the names Umar Farouk were clearly known before hand from “Qaeda chats,” by the intelligence, further considering that contrary to earlier information, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency had information about Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab three days before his departure from Amsterdam to Detroit, furthermore, taking into account that we now know it is the policy of the USA government to allow well known terrorists to fly into American for “some reason or another” where does that leave the theory concocted by Obama that it was a of “failure to connect dots?”

More so, can one deny that it is entirely possible that these ruthless “choices” made for “some reason or another” which facilitate murder or attempted murder of innocent people while spreading fear are nothing but cynical ways of getting pretexts for advancement of imperialism's geostrategic goals around the world? Let the reader recall what we wrote about Yemen and the, African and Indian Ocean great scramble for big powers.

However, all this is always done in the name of protecting peace, freedom, justice, human rights and such jazz. More so, can we be assured that, the “expected terrorist attacks” by “Somalis terrorists” that Chris has been warning us about, will not be allowed for “one reason or another.”?

In Mein Kampf Hitler said that:

“The great masses of the people in the very bottom of their hearts tend to be corrupted rather than purposely or consciously evil... therefore ... they more easily fall a victim to a big lie than to a little one, since they themselves lie in little things, but would be ashamed of lies that were too big.”

  1. Go and record the statement at the central police station. This is a piece of propaganda meant to deflect attention from that axis of evil behind terrorism. Muslim extremism. Any reason other than extremists please shout it to the birds. They wont give a hoot.

  2. Mwarangeth'e:

Since the flight manifest is submitted 72 hours before the flight, can't intelligence between nations be used to check discreetly whether the suspect is strapped with bombs or he's just on a mission once he reaches the destination?

Isn't the the terror suspect list shared among nations since this terrorist freely departed from Amsterdam without raising any suspicion?

If indeed they let him in so that they could monitor him, didn't they know he posed danger while inside the plane since he carried some explosives?

  4. And while at it, Mrs Clinton is giving us more "tips" on this Nigerian "terrorist."

    According to the BBC:

"US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has blamed failings by Nigerian leaders for increasing "radicalisation" among young Nigerians. She pointed to poor living standards and "unbelievable" corruption."

After noting that the poor living standards of most Nigerians has lead to "radicalization" she added this:

"The information we have on the Christmas Day bomber so far seems to suggest that he was disturbed by his father's wealth and the kind of living conditions that he viewed as being not Islamic enough."

Interesting observations. When a Nigerians get poor, he gets "radicalised." When he gets rich, he gets disturbed by wealth and becomes "radicalised."

  5. The UK Supreme Court has ruled that special Treasury orders that freeze the assets of terror suspects are unlawful.

The judges at the UK's highest court said the government had exceeded its powers by controlling the finances of five suspects.

  6. Kinda mixed up this piece.

If the question is for whom these terrorists work, the answer is simple; for their interests.

But this article doesn't seek to answer that question. It just takes us through possible security lapses and willful compromises by governments.

As far as I am concerned terrorists seek to either advance their philosophy (could be religious or political)or defend their turf when they do feel its being threatened or that someone is out to impose their worldview on them. So it could be to advance a cause or to resist some perceived injustice.

When you look at one or two of the leading terror gangs, it is all very clear. For instance, the Al-Queada group is fuelled by both the urge to spread their extremist and blatantly misplaced sense of religion and the impulse to resist American (and their surrogates) dictatorship.
The American government is another terror group always very keen to advance their cause or to fight what they consider unfair target by extremist islamic groups (and previously by Russians and their political and economic philosophies). President George Bush, himself a terorrist, while shooting down pleas not to invade Iraq described President Saddam Hussein as the 'man who tried to kill my father'. According to him, the Iraqi President did not attempt to assasinate the President of the United States of America but 'his father'. When such personal connotations fuel your passion you can only be acting to advance YOUR OWN personal and selfish interests. you can only be a terorrist especially when you disregard international law and the United Nations to invade an innocent country. The current American President, Barack Obama, said while receiving his nobel prize that 'you lose it when you compromise the very ideals you claim to uphold'.
Another terror group would be the mungiki who are keen to spread their sect ideals while still fighting what they onsider injustices meted on them by those who came before them.

So terorrits work for themselves and their loved ones, period!

  8. Mwarangethe,

Why are you verbose and wordy in most things that you expound on. Why cant you be brief.

Mwarangethe, terrorists thrive on publicity and the fear they cause. they enjoy it when there is that state of panic, when you stop using the train for fear of being blown and there are long queues at the airport and you being frisked.

Terrorists make their point known to millions when you struggle to update you systems, and in the process, achieve the goal of spreading fear.

Terrorists enjoy when you look helpless. They work for themselves, and enjoy the publicity and fame that is attached to it. Al Shabbab. They are famous now, are they. Jamiiya Ismailia were famous in Egypt until they killed the Japanese tourists in Luxor. But not any more. that is the one thing that terrorists have differently from the Njoroges and Kamaus who snatch bags on Kenyatta Avenue. Publicity, fame and jingoistic ego.

They fight for a course. Anyway, thanx for trying to divert the main topic at hand. Try you may.

Derek (the real one) I am not using my comp. Using a phone. just felt that I should reply you. Have a good day

When Somoza of Nicaragua a USA puppet, was removed, the Carter adminsitration sought to desperately keep his National Guard in power after it had slaughtered some 40, 000 civilians.

To do so, the USA finally evacuated the commanders in planes disguised with Red Cross markings which is a war crime by the way to Honduras.

Once in Honduras, these commanders were reconsituted as a terrorist force under the direction of Agentine neo Nazis.

Doesn't that explain who these guys work for?

If you are not satisfied, what about this report from Washington Post dated July, 19, 1992?

A specially equipped C-141 Starlifter transport carrying William Casey touched down at a military air base south of Islamabad in October 1984 for a secret visit by the CIA director to plan strategy for the war against Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Helicopters lifted Casey to three secret training camps near the Afghan border, where he watched mujaheddin rebels fire heavy weapons and learn to make bombs with CIA-supplied plastic explosives and detonators.

During the visit, Casey startled his Pakistani hosts by proposing that they take the Afghan war into enemy territory -- into the Soviet Union itself. Casey wanted to ship subversive propaganda through Afghanistan to the Soviet Union's predominantly Muslim southern republics. The Pakistanis agreed, and the CIA soon supplied thousands of Korans, as well as books on Soviet atrocities in Uzbekistan and tracts on historical heroes of Uzbek nationalism, according to Pakistani and Western officials.

Doesn't this show a foreign policy of using these guys to spark trouble for geo political reasons?

Why can't Indians go back to India and help rebuild their country?
Is that not where their loyalty is? Do u know Indians in Kenya put their money they earn through corrupt means into foreign bank accounts?
Or the "Kenyan" white farmers in the likes of killer Delamere who never identify themselves as Kenyan, but yet, they came and raped our country and plundered our resources humiliating Africans.

Talk of plundering Kenyan wealth and sharing the spoils! These two group of people (wazungu & wahindi) have perfected that art and here you are looking in the wrong places since you have this inferiority complex of anything light skin! Wakenya ni wajinga kweli!!!

  14. Mwarang'ethe, my dictionary defines terrorism as follows:

"The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons"

If you look at my comment above, I listed the United States government as the second best known terrorist squad. So your example of President Carter and his administraion's gimmickry in Honduras as proof that terrorists work for a hidden hand, you miss the point as that third hand is itself a terror squad. President Carter's government used and even the current one of President Obama does use terror to perpetuate its agenda for both the political interests of these leaders and for their constituencies. These guys work for themselves despite all the hoopla they generate as they posture as being anti-terror!

What CRAP! Then, why can't Kenyans in the diaspora come back at build this country? We need our doctors, engineers, teachers ... working outside this beloved country to come back and contribute towards a just and equitable society. But we also need to accept that certain peoples/countries will always be less fortunate than we are and that is the reason they cross our borders to seek to be human in their existence.
Stop spreading those xenophobic statements. You fuel anger and resentment where none should exist.
