Six people have been killed at the volatile Mount Elgon area by a group of gunmen dressed in police uniforms. However, what was even more shocking is that the killings were carried out less than a kilometer from a police station.
This carnage is happening in a security zone where the presence of security forces including that of the dreaded para-military force, the general service unit (GSU) and patrols have been intensified over the past few months.
Those carrying out the murders are a gang of well organized thugs who are not only armed with modern weapons but are protected by their masters who seem to guarantee them freedom from prosecution. How else can you explain carrying out a raid a stones throw from a police station?
Religious leaders in the area are saying that this carnage is as a result of land and politics and has everything to do with the forthcoming general elections later this year as politicians position themselves for re-election while others anticipate dislodging the incumbents.
The problem in Mount Elgon can only be solved by ministry of lands officials and the local politicians and truck loads of heavily armed para-military troops will only increase the suffering of wananchi in the area. In fact the GSU officers have been accused of raping minors and torching houses in the volatile area that is now classified a security zone.

Phil says,
ReplyDeleteThese clashes are politically instigated. There seems to be an "offical hand" in all these killings. Raider's make appointments, they are well co-odinated, uniformed in military fatigues. There are unwanted tribe(s) in the mount elgon area.
Meanwhile the guys who took oath of office to protect Kenyan lives and property have buried their heads in the sand. Its as if Mt. Elgon residents are not Kenyans!!

ReplyDeleteJust a couple of days ago Chris, I gave you an example about the gravity of land problems in Kenya and suggested solutions. Other bloggers instead of offering solutions, resorted to tribal insults.
Whats going on in Mt. Elgon is hell on earth. How can hundreds of people needlessly die and thousands others displaced in a country that claims independence and democracy? You have to visit the villages which have been raidied to fully appreciate the sufferings of these people - who must be wondering whether they are Kenyans by right or by curse. While you and I are busy planning how we'll enjoy a family get-together party over the easter holidays, it saddens me that other citizens will spend the same easter holidays in makeshift camps or forest caves without any shelter or food because of senseless politically instigated violence and seemingly officially approved clashes.
Yet, its only yesterday that parliament speaker allowed debate on this subject that has been on going for months now!
Unless the government fully commits itself to fighting inequality in land allocations (we know goverment does not sell land!), this country will be doomed forever. And the first step is fish the Ndun'gu Land Commission Report from the archieves. The chances of that happening are very slim as the one's in-charge are the same people widely quoted in the same report.
