Now KUJ Demands The Resignation Of Wangethi And Odindo

…Union Also Demands Reinstatement Of Crime Editor

According to impeccable sources within the Nation Media group, Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) officials and representatives visited the CEO Linus Gitahi yesterday over the ongoing crisis at the media house. Also present at the meeting was the group's Human Resources Services manager Swaleh Shariff.

The KUJ officials demanded the resignation of Wangethi Mwangi and Joseph Odindo, the two mangers who have been linked to the sex-for-promotions scandal at the respected media house. The resignations are supposed to pave way for proper investigations over the allegations leveled at the two in anonymous letters posted on the Internet.

Interestingly the issue of crime editor Stephen Muiruri was raised with the KUJ officials demanding his immediate reinstatement since he resigned under duress. This seems to suggest that there is a link between Muiruri's departure on 2nd February this year, and the sex-scandal anonymous letters. Muiruri himself says in a leaked letter published elsewhere in this blog that the senior managers at the media house suspected that he was the main brains and author behind the anonoymous letters that have shocked Kenyans. Muiruri however says that none of the managers dared bring up the issue and instead concentrated on some fabricated and unsubstantiated claims about Muiruri's conduct.

NMG CEO Linus Gitahi scheduled another meeting with the Union officials for tomorrow (Wednesday) saying that he needed to consult before giving a verdict on the issue.

The union officials did not mince any words in pointing out to Mr Gitahi that it was imperative that he preserves the media group's reputation and independence by sacking all managers, no matter how senior they were, who preyed on female members of staff, some of whom were people's wives. Interestingly Mr Gitahi is said to have also pleaded with the Union officials to keep the meeting a top secret.

Meanwhile in a related development, the much awaited so-called "water tight dossier" on the sexual exploits of senior Nation Media group managers that is expected to be released on March 1st may be available sooner, according to a source close to the anonymous authors of the report believed to be staffers of the giant media group.

Former Nation Crime Editor Stephen Muiruri says in the latest letters leaked to this blogger, that he fears for his life.

While it is a known fact that crime reporting, and especially the kind of deep, investigative kind that was Muiruri's specialty is highly risky and dangerous, what makes the former Nation crime writer's predicament even more serious, are the numerous enemies he seems to have made in the course of his work.

The former Nation crime editor is taking the threats on his life seriously and a look at the letter reveals that it has been widely circulated to key personalities in the country, including ODM-Kenya presidential hopefuls, Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga, Paul Muite, the Aga Khan (who is majority shareholder of NMG) as well as the British High Commissioner to Kenya amongst others.
