The evolving mystery surrounding the alleged agreement between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto deepens by the day. Yesterday, in a press briefing, Raila maintained that he had not met with Ruto. Meanwhile, UDA Party Secretary-General Cleophas Malala issued a statement riddled with propaganda and skewed opinions favoring Ruto. In the statement, Malala accused Raila of being power-hungry, referencing unspecified "fresh demands" allegedly made by Raila. Yet, after scouring media reports, no evidence of these fresh demands has surfaced.
How was this deal brokered, and what led Raila to call off protests on Monday? Historically, major political resolutions in Kenya have involved direct talks between the key players—such as in 2008 (Mwai Kibaki and Raila) and 2018 (Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila). Could this latest agreement have been negotiated through intermediaries, text messages, or even WhatsApp?
Malala’s claims about Raila being power-hungry also don’t hold up. Raila’s demands, including the opening of election servers and addressing the high cost of living, are aimed at benefiting the Kenyan people, not personal political gain. If the government truly won the election, opening the servers should be straightforward. Delays only fuel suspicion that the server results may have been tampered with or fabricated.
Raila’s tactical pause may be strategic, allowing him to demonstrate the futility of negotiations with the Ruto administration. Azimio appears to be preparing for a potential escalation, which could explain why Raila has reserved the right to resume protests after one week. This calm before the storm might be a calculated move to expose the government's unwillingness to address key demands.
The mystery of what transpired between Raila and Ruto remains. Both leaders appeared unusually subdued after the alleged agreement—Ruto looking shaken and Raila confident. Could this be indicative of behind-the-scenes tensions? As Kenyans wait for clarity, one thing is certain: this political saga is far from over.
For now, all eyes remain on the unfolding events, with speculation rife about the true nature of the agreement and what lies ahead.
