Decoding Kenya’s Political Drama: What’s Really Happening Behind the Scenes?

What’s really going on in Kenya today? The announcements made on Sunday by the Ruto administration and Raila Odinga about a “national dialogue” within Parliament have left many Kenyans puzzled. What does parliamentary dialogue mean, and how can any meaningful progress be achieved within a week, as Raila hinted? The lack of clarity has sparked speculation, with some alleging it’s the prelude to a “handshake” or even a grand coalition government.

But Ruto and his allies have consistently denied any plans for a handshake. So, what exactly is unfolding?

To understand the current political theater, let’s rewind to Saturday. Sources suggest that multiple phone conversations took place between Ruto and Raila. This was peculiar, as both sides were busy preparing for Monday demonstrations. The government had mobilized security forces, while Azimio had countermeasures in place. Yet, behind the scenes, these strange conversations occurred.

Sunday brought even greater surprises. Credible sources claim a meeting took place between Ruto, Raila, and former President Uhuru Kenyatta. While it’s unclear whether the meeting was physical or virtual, the fact that Uhuru—who has been a polarizing figure in Ruto’s administration—was involved is significant. This hints at an external force compelling these leaders to come to the table.

What could have transpired during this meeting?

The result was telling. Ruto’s public address showed an uncharacteristic demeanor—he appeared subdued and off-balance. Meanwhile, Azimio leaders held a press conference looking confident and calm. These contrasting appearances suggest that something major occurred during the discussions.

Yet, the subsequent agreement has raised questions. How can a parliamentary process yield tangible results within one week? Typically, parliamentary negotiations are lengthy and bureaucratic. Moreover, UDA leaders have expressed unease about Azimio’s proposed participants, including figures like Babu Owino and General Nuru Okanga.

Azimio’s stance suggests that demonstrations are merely on pause. Raila and his allies have repeatedly emphasized their readiness to return to the streets if talks fail. Many within Azimio remain skeptical of Ruto’s intentions, citing his political track record as evidence of insincerity.

This unfolding drama leaves the spotlight on Raila Odinga. What is his endgame? His strategy remains a mystery, but his ability to remain a step ahead of his opponents is evident. At the same time, silence from key players on both sides has fueled speculation. Some leaders, such as Senator Ledama Olekina, have even hinted at possible deception in the agreements reached.

Could this be the calm before the storm? Raila’s calculated moves and unwavering demands point to a leader playing the long game, ensuring that if the talks falter, Azimio will emerge stronger. Meanwhile, Kenyans are left grappling with questions about the true nature of this agreement, the role of external forces, and the political future of their nation.

For now, patience and vigilance are key. The next steps will determine whether the country moves toward resolution or plunges back into unrest. As Raila said, Azimio reserves the right to resume protests if progress stalls—an ominous sign that this saga is far from over.
