Adieu Kumekucha

Feel free to forward this post to your political friends

It is with a heavy heart that I write this my very last post.

Next May we would have all celebrated 10 great years of Kumekucha. But fate it seems had different ideas. The Kumekucha blog and all other Kumekucha brands have now been shut down for good. This decision has been taken after a lot of deep thought and wide consultation. It is irreversible. You will never again see a Kumekucha post, email or even book EVER AGAIN. In a few hours the Kumekucha blog will vanish off the face of the World Wide Web. I have called it quits, folks. It is just as well that I never got round to finalizing any deal to sell the Kumekucha blog because that would have complicated everything considerably.

Goodbye folks.

Why?

Because my children need their father more than ever before. Because I want very much to be there to receive my unborn child into this world. Because I firmly believe that my assassination would never add any value to the fight for a better Kenya. Because I am persuaded that there are other emerging Kenyans and bloggers ready to take up the fight where I have left off. Some of them are better and more resourceful than I have been. Because I feel I have done my bit and my circumstances and the circumstances in the country at the moment are such that I cannot continue with what I have been doing. It is time to listen to my long suffering family and loved ones some of home have always been very worried about my well being, knowing what they do about Kenyan politics and the threats I have received over the years.

This is serious business because I am writing this post over a post that I had prepared a few weeks ago and left instructions that should anything happen to me it should be posted immediately to at the very least discount any suicide theories or road accident claims. I have even left my earlier post title and the first paragraph intact.

Kumekucha has been a labour of love for my country. Contrary to what some people think I have never made a single cent in profits from it. Instead over the years I have taken money from my other scarce resources to finance it and keep it going. Even the fact that I recently aggressively started selling books has NOT changed the situation. How much have I put in over the years? A lot of money, a small fortune but I do not have an iota of regret. It is like investing a fortune in time and resources in a relationship where you end up being forced apart for reasons other than your love for each other. I still love my country to bits and that will never change.

My sincere apologies to all those whom I have disappointed by what will appear to many to be a cowardly act. But as I have said here before there is a very thin line between being brave and being stupid. Let time and history judge where I fall. Let historians also judge if I made any contribution to a better Kenya.

As I ride out to the sunset you can be sure that my thoughts will constantly be with you and my beloved banana republic. I will worry as always about the direction the country is heading but hopefully I will be less worried about my own personal safety.

Adieu my friends. It has been a great and eventful time being with you and I take this opportunity to wish you all the best in future.

The anonymous blogger only known as Chris Kumekucha.

Real Reason Bonface Mwangi Quit Politics

Why as Kenyans make fun of a true Kenyan hero of our time, Kumekucha is NOT laughing
Boniface_Mwangi
Boniface Mwangi on twitter this morning;Boniface Mwangi; @bonifacemwangi : I'm no longer willing to die for my country, l will live for it because my kids need a father. 1 hour ago
@bonifacemwangi : "I can do a better job outside the grave" in a response to his exile - Ngugi wa Thiongo 1 hour ago @bonifacemwangi : Two of the most outspoken politicians in Kenya's history Tom Mboya & J.M Kariuki were killed by the state. Kenyans moved on. 1 hour ago

As you read this I am still struggling to write one of the most important articles I have ever written. And I am not struggling because I do not have the information or too little to say. Indeed I have too much to say but have no clue where to start.

What article is this you are trying to write? I hear you ask.

It is an article about 30 year old activist Boniface Mwangi who announced a few hours ago that he has "retired" from political activism.

This is the man who was mentioned in the controversial USAid letter as one of the people "being financed by the Americans to cause trouble" and was one of the leaders of the Feb 13th Uhuru Park demonstration.

Mwangi is also the same man whose life was changed so dramatically by the still unresolved 2008 Post election violence. It caused him to leave his job as a photojournalist in an effort to recover from the sheer trauma of taking the photographs.

This news is really discouraging to me because Mwangi was one of the few people on the forefront of Kenyan politics who carried enough clout to DE-tribalize our politics. We have sunk so low in Kenya today that you cannot talk about corruption (e.g. the railway project) without people asking you what tribe you are. If you are a Kikuyu you will be called confused which is better than being called a sour election loser if you are any other tribe but the Kalenjin. The compartments are SO NEAT!!

In case I never get round to writing this article let me at least share with you the false starts I have had so far. All too angry and too emotional I guess.

1st attempt
It is famously said that gallant Tom Mboya was once told off by his illiterate dad who was a sisal picker in Kilimambogo (where Tom was born in a grass thatched house). His dad was angry at his efforts to fight the colonialists;

"Do you think you can compete with the white man who make aircrafts that fly in the air and win...?"

Actually Tom ended up winning that particular battle and emphatically at that. But if Mboya's father was able to see the future this should have been his warning;

"Do you think you can compete with the African (and NOT mzungu) government of Kenya with all its' power and state machinery?

This was the battle that brilliant Mboya was not able to win and many other "reckless" Kenyans as well.

And so I feel Bonface Mwangi, he is not a coward but a smart and practical Kenyan... And the history of our banana republic fully backs him.
...ends

My second attempt was even more disastrous...
Kenya is filled with many highly educated souls. Albeit many of them naive, gullible PhDs. Some of them have no qualms about slapping women violently in on public television and others are so tribal that they deserve a lecture from my 5 year old son... where do they get these PhDs anyway? some factory somewhere???

The Day The Kenyan Media Ignored The Biggest Story

What really happened on 13th Feb 2014 at Uhuru Park, Nairobi?

The media gave the biggest story of the day, an anti-government protest, a complete black out. Later a few articles in the press mentioned it almost in passing. It never really happened, they wanted Kenyans to believe. Those who wanted to know were forced to turn to the International media.

But even more fascinating was this piece in the Daily Nation by KWAMCHETSI MAKOKHA.

Judging by the way people were huffing and puffing in the wrong direction on Facebook most missed the whole satirical message.

In my days we greatly appreciated satire and were quick to spot it. I find it very strange that these days everybody misses it. I have experienced it in this blog several times where my satirical pieces have always gotten people hot under the collar in the wrong direction. What went wrong? Shallow education system? Very sad what people are missing.

In such an environment how would somebody ever get to really appreciate William Shakespeare's classic Julius Caesar for instance which my dad used to great effect to teach me politics? More so the speech by Mark Antony and the immortal words "I come not to praise Caesar but to bury him..."

Anyway to quit boring most of you, it will be of much more interest to you guys to know that as the country moves in the direction of a gagged press and policemen on Facebook satire will be the only way to go folks. And having privileged information on what is going on in the media and the pressure they were feeling over reporting the said demonstrations (the low key media coverage over what should have been the biggest story of Feb 13th was no accident) I strongly suspect that the style of writing used in this Nation piece was arrived at out of necessity rather than by voluntary whim.  It may even have been edited at the last minute, I want to speculate.

Apart from the security goons skimming through and nodding their heads in approval, satire is difficult to prosecute for defamation.

Why Tribalism Monster Was Badly Missed At Uhuru Park Demos Yesterday

Question to Kumekucha on Facebook;
This is a very honest observation. Please do not read mischief. Why have high profile demonstrations or political protests become solely Kikuyu activism? Why are other communities boycotting or showing complete apathy? Every other lead spokesperson at the Freedom Corner protest yesterday were our brothers and sisters from Mount Kenya region.Njoya,Mwangi,Maina etc etc. This is unilateral solidarity for which I really can't put a finger on.What is happening...??

My answer;

This is a group of Kenyans who have been consistent in their fight for a better Kenya. I have never looked at them as Kikuyus and it would be unfair for anybody to look at them as such. They are Kenyans. PERIOD. They have refused to be boxed into the categories carefully prepared by our so-called leaders for their own selfish political objectives. Secondly those in civil society championing the peaceful demonstrations are wise enough to realize that if they were to allow one of their Luo brothers for instance, on the forefront the whole noble cause would be reduced to the-elections-are-over-move-on rhetoric. Or these-stupid-Luos-rhetoric. Or Raila-has-organized-this-because-he-lost-the-elections-and-wants-to-be-president-at-all-costs etc.

I have had the pleasure of knowing some of these tribeless Kenyans who are largely ignored by the tribal voters of Kenya. I always assure them that even if people see them as confused now, history will classify them as visionaries. And remember that being on the forefront is not a joke. Some like Oscar Kingara lost his life while others like John Githongo have had to live in exile from their own country. And there are many other who continue to suffer. I really get angry when I see some silly tribal comment and remember what people are risking while the rest of us have fun on Facebook and Twitter.

Oscar Kingara: Brutally gunned down in his car (along with his assistant Oulu) by a man on a motorbike a few hours after the government had accused his Oscar Foundation of being a front for Mungiki. There are those who will see Kingara as a "confused Kikuyu" but may he be remembered as a gallant Kenyan. Perhaps long dead and forgotten, but I have written a book available only to raw notes readers that talks about his assassination and those who organized it. Hopefully one day that book will be widely available. Meanwhile you can read an old Kumekucha post HERE. Pay special attention to the first readers' comment because I believe it was written by somebody sympathetic to the killers. Rest in peace Oscar, and may your brutal death not have been in vain.

All my children and others I have influence on have been carefully brought up by me in the knowledge that all those who propagate tribalism are the worst kind of criminals. I have highlighted the strengths of major Kenyan tribes to them and what they should seek to copy from them. The Luo brilliance for those who want to pursue the medical profession and other highly technical fields, not to mention their swag. The Kikuyu entrepreneurial spirit that is unmatched in most of Africa and beyond etc. BUT recently one of them put me in a tight corner when he asked me how come some of the worst tribalists we have are PhD holders. My reply; Son, degrees do not mean automatic intelligence and that is why Kenya is full of very educated but very foolish people. I want you to be both intelligent and highly educated so that when you take over from these idiots you can bring about real and lasting change in our country.

History bores most Kenyans and that is why there is absolutely no chance that most will ever discover that this tribalism monster was birthed and fed in State house after the assassination of Tom Mboya (a Luo man who won all his elections with Kikuyu votes against Kikuyu candidates) in July 1969. Jomo and his team did an excellent job because if you go to the estates even today you will hear kids barely out of their diapers saying "Luos are stupid." The current government has effortlessly used it (guided by some of the people who were around when this evil was first mooted). Admittedly it wins elections. But I have consistently said in my blog since 2005 that the country needs a real truth and reconciliation campaign where people will be made to understand what happened and we should start by apologizing to our Luo brothers for the grave sin we have committed against them. If not this is something serious enough to be tried at the ICC.

What Future JUBILEE Government After 3 Explosive Developments Yesterday?

If there was nothing terribly wrong with our media in Kenya then the top TV news items last night should have come in the following order;

1.    Letter from National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC) chairman Francis Kimemia to the Foreign Affairs ministry asking them to IMMEDIATELY summon United States Agency for International Development (USAID) over "credible intelligence" that the US government (through USAID) is trying to destabilize the Kenyan govt by financing demonstrators.

2.    Peaceful demonstrations at Uhuru Park led by activist Boniface Mwangi Reverend Timothy Njoya and musician Eric Wainaina broken up by riot police (picture above shows traffic policeman kicking away enlarged doll used in the demonstrations yesterday).

3.    The Public Investments Committee finally names the Kenyan directors of companies at the centre of the standard gauge railway saga. Shockingly they are a Mr Peter Maingi Gatere and Leonard Mwangi Ndungu who are the registered directors of China Road and Bridge Corporation-Kenya.

All 3 items were missing from most of the top TV news stations.

Instead the most watched 9pm Prime TV news had as one of its' lead stories the saga of a woman who delivered a 7Kg baby which is fine, except that the country is burning and people are talking about overweight babies.

Any top political analyst who is neutral will tell you that so explosive are those 3 news items that they are enough to trigger the downfall of the JUBILEEE government (I discuss the solid reasons in my latest raw notes). The superstitious (like one Facebook friend who survived the Moi era) will tell you that it is a very bad omen to have Rev Njoya in a demonstration against your government. It means that the said government is doomed (I also discuss that in my raw notes).

In a nutshell we are now firmly back in the Moi days and the writing is so clearly on the wall that even the blind can "see" it.

But even more interesting is the fact that we did not get here suddenly and without ample warning. The path to the very dangerous place where the banana republic is today was clearly documented here and in the books with highly sensitive information that I have been churning out (see full list at the bottom of this email.

So what is the way forward from here? Expect the following to unfold in the coming weeks and months;

- More anti-government demonstrations.
- Postponement or halting of international aid as they wait to get a clearer picture of what is unfolding in Kenya.
- Desperate measures by a government faced with empty coffers including going ahead with the long postponed laying off of 100,000 civil servants to cut down on the government wage bill and more taxes on already over-taxed Kenyans.
- Unprecedented tough economic times as a result of the consequences above and reduced direct foreign exchange injections into the economy. Foreign exchange controls quite likely if the situation persists.
- Boiling point for ordinary Kenyans as economic implications bite harder
- Unpredictable chaos. Widespread riots and demonstrations etc.

Will the last person leaving Kenya remember to switch off the lights.

The day DPP Tobiko issued an arrest warrant for CBK governor Professor Njuguna Ndungu: CBK Governor Case Linked To 2 Untouchables

It was Baba Jimmy who made the phrase Bure kabisa popular in Kenya-speak. During his speeches even today he usually predictably utters the words and the audience is always guaranteed to burst out in laughter.

Ironically there were a lot of bure kabisa moments during his own administration and although many Kenyans (including this blogger) had hoped for a fresh start with Uhuruto the current government seems to be even more efficient in delivering Bure Kabisa moments in quick succession. And some of them are highly entertaining.

Take the CBK governor (pictured above) Professor Njuguna Ndungu’s saga for instance.

Parliament discussed him eons ago and expressed grave concern over some of the things that had gone down at the bank under his watch. But nothing happened until the banana republic’s chief prosecutor Keraiko Tobiko went looking for front page headlines (and got them) by revealing that he had issued an arrest warrant for the CBK governor.

Now there is this true story about Kenyans in distress some years back who called the cops only to be told that they had no petrol and so could the good Kenyans (surrounded by thugs) bring petrol so that the cops come to their rescue? Mpesa did NOT exist in those days.

Now assuming that the cops did not have petrol to fuel a car to arrest CBK governor Ndungu, Vigilance house is right next to CBK. So a short 2 minutes walk would have gotten cops into the CBK. The CBK is also within very short walking distance from Tobiko’s office at Sheria house. Forget the excuse that Ndungu was out of the country bcause if they were serious they would have waited for his return and arrested him. Period.

Instead Kenyans have been treated to this bure kabisa charade in a desperate bid to convince Kenyans and the international community that the government is serious about fighting graft. Go tell that to the birds. Indeed the script is now very clear and is as follows;

1) Issue arrest warrant for Ndungu through the press (headline to prove JUBILEE are fighting corruption delivered).

2. Ndungu goes to court to block arrest (has already happened)

3. Court battle to drag on until nobody is paying attention.

4. Hio maneno itaishia hapo. End of story!

5. Plan B: If those alert idiots on Facebook and Kumekucha follow up too much charge Ndungu in court and follow the Kamlesh Pattni script.

GAME SHOT, another ingenious move by this genius government. Muta-do???

The truth is that to successfully prosecute Ndungu he would have to go down with 2 other untouchable Kenyans. Highly sensitive details on who they are and what they did that can't be published online.

Deadly State House PR Spin Machine At It Again

There was a time recently that legislators referred to Aden Duale as makanga wa State house. This past weekend those Kenyans who may not have had any idea what the heck mpigs were talking about got to fully understood the rather appropriate tag.

Duale is the key tool used by State house for spinning purposes.

Now not everybody understands what spinning is so wiseguys please be patient for a minute for me to explain. Everything in life including the marketing of a product but especially politics is ruled by the perception (and NOT necessarily the truth) of the relevant publics. No matter how bad the news is you can change (spin) the way the public should receive it for your own selfish purposes.

Let me give an example from an old movie that I downloaded and watched this past weekend. The movie is called Thank you for smoking and it proves that you can market poison itself successfully to folks who do not want to commit suicide. You just need to be good at spinning stuff. Anyway without boring you with the details the chief protagonist is a spin expert for tobacco companies at a time when the public in the US is beginning to realize that tobacco smoking is damaging to the health (despite tobacco companies spending millions to prove that no research has conclusively proved this). A sexy female reporter seduces him and gets all the info she wants via pillow-talk (always, always works). The guy is devastated when she publishes her article and reveals all his killer moves to kill millions who continue smoking because he is so good at what he does. "I thought what we talked about when we were F****** was off the record," he screams at her shortly after he is fired.

But the spin master is not cornered yet, not even after the kind of article that should have been the end of the story. He calls a press conference and tells the public that the said reporter obtained her information by seducing him and wonders if this is the official policy of the very respectable newspaper for getting stories.. Naturally the attention of the public shifts completely to the said seductress (forgetting her article).

Now what we are being told with a straight face is that the ICC cases were engineered with the sole purpose of ensuring Raila Odinga's smooth passage to power. The "confirmation" of this is what former ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo said in some radio interview in the Netherlands. I have reviewed that interview and I can assure you that he DID NOT say anything that could be remotely interpreted the way Duale interpreted it.

But who cares? According to the grassroots supporters of Uhuruto the government has said it and so it must be gospel truth and that is the end of the story. As you read this some Kenyan grazing cattle in the countryside is saying to himself; "Kumbe Raila is such a nasty piece of work? Alitaka kumaliza mtu wetu"

To be honest with you I have never seen such an efficient spin machine as what has been installed in the banana republic just now in the heart of State house. Even Herr Hitler himself would have gone green with envy by just getting a glimpse into their work.

And remember that now that somebody has kicked up the dust attention will be diverted from other more important issues of the day like that smelly railway project that your great grand child will still be paying for by the time they go to their grave.

Very very smart!

Will CORD's Plan To Remove Uhuru From Power Work?

921825
These days I don't get the time to relax with cheap thrillers but I am NOT ashamed to say that for many years I have always enjoyed a good James Hardley Chase novel. Yep, those primary school kids novels. I have always been a sucker for the drama, suspense and edge-of-the-seat cheap tricks that make up these small books that were written by a Brit imitating American "thug language."
Raila Odinga
Will this man's calculated sucker punch against the JUBILEE Presidency work?

My favourite has always been The Sucker punch which is the story of a perfect murder that went wrong because of one silly little detail. At some point the main character is watching a fight where there is this boxer clearly winning and all over his opponent. But his overconfidence is his undoing because the losing fighter sneaks in one punch that floors him and ends the fight. The sucker punch.

For weeks now there has been lots of excitement in the CORD fold, like there is something big about to happen. And the guys seem to have taken an oath of secrecy or something because my best efforts were met with people who were not going to tell me anything. But about 2 weeks ago CORD principal Kalonzo Musyoka let it slip that elections would be very soon long before 2017. I went and did my research and still could not see how this could be made to happen. At least not legally. Then over the weekend I learnt that there may be a plan to impeach the president over the rampant insecurity in the country.

Still it did not make sense to me because the rubber stamp JUBILEE coalition has the numbers in the senate and overwhelmingly so. I forgot about the ridiculous theory until I hit the shower. In the middle of soaping myself it hit me. There has been widespread rebellion within the ruling coalition. The truth is that currently only a small tiny push will throw things out of control.

Even more interesting is what Katiba says. If such a motion were to be successful then the Deputy President would take over for the remainder of the term. Now that sounds like just the right kind of incentive to rally the entire Rift Valley behind such a motion. To survive the said Deputy president would also need to do business with CORD and so our politics would change overnight and both houses would look very different even with the same legislators. In such a scanrio a fresh election before 2017 becomes a real possibility.

Now insecurity is one subject that is mighty close to Kenyans just now. Police say that an average of 3 matatus are carjacked daily. Some observers say that the number is closer to 10. In some of these incidences women passengers are raped...and even male ones in one or two bizarre cases. Not to mention the fact that many parts of the country that were previously crime free now have unprecedented crime waves sweeping through them. No Kenyan in their right mind would fail to admit the fact that the government has failed in its' fundamental responsibility of guaranteeing security for its' people.

And the crimes are not only increasing but also getting more heinous by the day. Small children being kidnapped for ransoms and then being murdered in cold blood is the kind of thing that would cause any responsible leadership to stop what they are doing and address the problem as a priority. But nah, our government has been too busy with the ICC cases at the Hague. And the little spare time senior police officers have away from their efforts to make huge sums of money using their good offices is all going into rather belated efforts to fight the infiltration by terrorists into the very fabric of Kenyan life. When you allow people to walk into the country and radicalize youths over a long period of time, to them it becomes a normal lecture at the mosque as usual and their right to be radicalized which should NOT be disturbed by police. That is why there was so much blood letting at the Mombasa mosque over the weekend when police finally made a decision to make a move against this practice that has been ongoing for a long time.

In fact if you want to know how serious things are consider the fact that some people are now saying that Uganda is more stable and much safer than Kenya and are being taken seriously.

But back to the sucker punch from CORD. Is it really plausible? Can Raila Odinga's coalition pull it off? My straight answer is that it is plausible but unlikely to succeed. The people who marshaled the whole of Africa against the ICC are likely to make mince meat of CORD and are not the kind of fighters who would fall for a sucker punch from the opposition just now.

Fortunately also for them, they have been spending fortunes trying to destabilize CORD ahead of the ODM elections next week. In fact they have done such a good job of it that the ODM which will emerge from those elections will indeed have a national outlook but will be much weaker than the ODM that led the CORD coalition into last year's general elections. I keep reminding you guys that this is politics and not primary school elections for class prefect.
