Why Yusuf Hassan Won the Kamukunji Parliamentary Seat

Abdi Yusuf Hassan won the Kamukunji parliamentary seat just a few hours ago garnering 19,030 votes.

He happens to be from PNU and that is what short-sighted political analysts are busy emphasizing on this morning. Had Brian Weke of Narc Kenya (who came in third with 4,064 votes) won then I would have emphasized the role his party played in winning those elections.
Yusuf Hassan the new Kamukunji legislator
Even if ODM’s Ibrahim Mohammed alias Joni (who came in second with15,517) had won I would still NOT have emphasized the party or its’ role in the election victory. Read the full results HERE.

Many so-called political analysts still don’t get it. The vast majority of Kenyans have moved on from this party thing. They are getting wiser by the day in realizing that there is no difference between the political parties, what matters is the individual. They have taken note of the fact that it is not PNU nor ODM legislators who are refusing to pay tax it is the majority of legislators in the current house. Greed, corruption and impunity do not recognize or respect any party lines.

Having said that, there is no denying that money played a major role in the victory of Abdi Yusuf Hassan. The man was backed by some very serious cash and the people behind that cash is what should be of great interest to Kumekuchans just now.

An incident that happened at the Shauri Moyo tallying centre yesterday is an interesting pointer. Makadara MP Gideon Mbuvi arrived riding on a motorcycle and accompanied by over 20 other people also on motorbikes. Mbuvi entered the Shauri Moyo hall and after a short while emerged again but this time with a large group of chanting youths in tow.

Folks, there is a really fascinating thing unfolding within PNU that has a lot of similarities with what happened within ODM in 2007. A group led by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is working overnight to increase its’ influence within the lose alliance of parties that is claiming to be a unified party. This group is spending cash like there was no tomorrow. It is not clear where exactly the funds are coming from but the clear agenda is to get the water melon into State house (a mirage for hopeless day dreamers if you ask me). This same group is the one that recently financed the poll by the Nakuru-based Smart Octopus Limited (what a revealing name).

Maybe I should take this opportunity to reveal how these opinion polls are usually done. For starters you must know that doing a national opinion poll is pretty expensive. And I guess that you also know that these companies doing the polls are not NGOS or World Bank sponsored entities, but private profit-making enterprises.

I know what your next question is. Do they even bother to do a poll? Of course they do. If you wanted figures and a breakdown they will give them to you. The only difference is that the figures are tweaked slightly to portray “the client” in good light. So one easy way of establishing who has sponsored a particular poll is to look at the final analysis of the particular pollster which they give in the press briefing they usually hold to release their results.

The tweak done by the Smart Octopus outfit was to announce that one Kalonzo Musyoka is the candidate who would have the greatest majority in the event of a run-off in the next presidential elections. What I find extremely interesting is the timing because we know that many analysts are of the view that the next general election will have to go into a run off with two candidates competing in the final showdown for State house. I am not one of those analysts because I firmly believe that there is a huge chance that the next president of Kenya will be duly elected without a run off. But that is a post for another day because today we are talking about the Kamukunji by-election.

Any doubts that there was a serious money game going on in Kamukunji should be dispelled by the high number of double registration that was detected. Of the 42 voters arrested during the by-election yesterday a staggering 38 were for double registration.

The VPs remarks when the Kamukunji poll results were released was even more illuminating for those who want to know what is really going on behind the scenes. He said: “I congratulate Hassan for emerging victorious. It was a result of unity of purpose in PNU alliance which shows better things are coming,”

Hmmm.........

    Ati paying tax?

    Which tax?

MPs, just like all PARASITES, do not ULTIMATELY pay any tax.

Even if they appear in your PERCEPTION to pay, in REALITY, they do not pay tax.

    Can someone say, OLIGARCHY?

At the end of the day, is there any meaning to this SMALL OPIUM SESSION? NO and NO. Just another round of circus.

    xxx

Is there anything of SUBSTANCE, that, should concern Kenyans today? Yes. As an example it is this:

"Govt to offload stake in three prime hotel chains."

"Treasury will offload its shareholding in three major hotel chains.

Shareholding by the Government in International Hotels Kenya Limited, which owns the Nairobi Hilton Hotel, Kenya Hotel Properties which part owns the Nairobi Intercontinental Hotel and Mountain Lodge Limited is to be sold to the private sector.

This was one of the resolutions reached during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Kibaki at State House, Nairobi on Thursday."

We mentioned these privatisations sometimes back. In other words, "FREE MARKETS" , i.e. LOOTING World Bank style, approved by YOUR CABINET/OLIGARCHY and undetected by the SHEEPLE taking OPIUM in Kamukunji.

  2. Chris is really strange and a hypocrite.

When the opinion polls has been showing Raila carrying the day for the last 3 years, Chris of Kumekucha never raised a finger to question who funded the pollsters.
Now that the tables have been turned and raila's popularity has been shown to obey Sir Isaac Newton law of gravity aka on a free fall; he has the audacity to ask what we have been asking for eons.
    What a pathetic fellow!!!

  3. Chris,
How dare question ati "why Yusuf Hassa won..."

He won on merit through democratic process.
I thought this PNU/ODM ceased to exist ages ago??

  4. Fellow Kenyans,
ODM may have lost the battle but they will still win the war! and FYI just because there have been reports that one or two MPs salaries are now paying tax does not mean you and I should openly begin rooting and campaigning for such players to the gallery. This is where Chris has missed it completely

On the one hand you say Kenyans have woken up and will frustrate all possible future candidates for MP/Govenor/Senate with impossibly high demands at every turn. On the other hand you say these same MPs/future governors/future senators are busy using taxes to hoodwink Kenyans into thinking they are newly converted reformers so that they can get us to campaign for them as the candidates of our choice. It sounds like either way you are abusing Kenyans as being so closed and simple minded that even when we are still being deceived through another route we are still as dumb as Sonko

Why is it no one can quite understand what is making us Kenyans tick anymore, the pollsters included? Any Kenyan will tell you the truth is parties don't make individuals bad, it is vice versa. And Kenyans themselves choose the bad individuals, so nothing has changed in essence! Parties are simply platforms of the people's choice.

Get this right, ODM lost because they know that the people who make it the people's party would have refused to back a party which would bribe as openly as was the case with PNU in order to win a simple small by election.

And the truth is Chris most of your commentators are busy living fulfilled lives in America/Eurpoe they have no idea what the dynamics on the ground are in reality. Take all comments preceding this with a healthy dose and pinch of salt. 2012 we are ready for you!

  8. First of all, congratulations to Yusuf Hassan, the newly elected member of parliament for Kamukunji.

And to the people of Kamukunji for sending a loud and clear message to all political mikokoteni - as parties have come to be known by Kamukunji voters - that they, the people of Kamukunji, will no longer allow themselves to be used, abused and wasted during every election by political mikokoteni that are only interested in beefing up their numbers in parliament.

All things taken into account, it's Yusuf Hassan who stood out among the other contenders by articulating his vision, agenda among other kitchen table issues for Kamukunji and its people from all walks of life.

Greed, corruption and impunity do not recognize or respect any party lines.

The writing is already on the walls of many constituencies around the country, therefore, let majority of the incumbent MPigs as well as all prospective political candidates who have eyes set on election 2012 and ears on the ground (grassroots of sort), take good notice of what has just transpired in Kamukunji.

The people, the electorate, are just fed up, they have had it with the usual fly-by-night political party business that seems to only pick up during the election season.

Hence, one of the main reason why December 2012 will be a year full of so many surprises and huge disappointments for half of the current members of parliament.

Yes, you've heard right, half of the current rotten population of MPigs will be swept out of parliament and set loose over hills and valleys - of political oblivion - around or within their former constituencies.

Many of the electorate are not going to allow or let the Mpigs to have a free ride back to parliament after the 2012 general elections regardless of their coattailed political mikokoteni that will be backing them in any way, shape or fashion.

Enough is enough, the people are fed up with business as usual, and their iron brooms are ready and well positioned to clear the political cobwebs and deadwoods out of parliament for good.

  9. Chris,

I concur whole heartedly with regard to the fact that political parties such as PNU, ODM, NARC-K and what have you, were very IRRELEVANT in the now ended Kamukunji by-elections. Let's hope it's sign of better things to come, and a trend that will be emulated in majority of the emanicipated constituencies, come December 2012.

  16. MP elect Yusuf Hassan was clearly the stronger and more substantive choice, and he will make a better and effective representative in parliament.

Majority of the electorate have spoken, and now trust him to fight for Kamukunjians from all walks of life, and give a voice to those who had been easily forgotten, sidelined and ignored in the past decades by the powers that be.

On the other had, while the celebrations for Yusuf Hassan's decisive victory at polls continues, let's not forget an ugly truth and fact concerning one dark issue that still prevails within Kamukunji constituency but has either been underreported or gone conveniently unnoticed, swept under the rug by many residents of Kamukunji.

The ugly truth is that, domestic assaults and abuse are so common in the area, and the silent victims need to have the courage to come out, stand up and talk about it, rather continue to suffer in agonizing silence as they have done is the past decades.

When the term 'Domestic Abuse' is uttered or talked about at any moment or by any person, or group of people, the first image of the victim that comes to mind is that of a woman, a girlfriend, a wife, a mother or the next door neighbour.

However, let it be known that many victims of domestic abuse are men, boyfriends, husbands, fathers, long-term partners and UKMs (urban-kept-men), who have continued to bare the brunt of domestic abuse in the present day East African cities like Nairobi.

One hopes that Yusuf Hassan will elect to stand up for all victims, regardless of their gender, and their families by finding ways and means to crack down on predatory domestic assults as well as serial domestic abusers.

Domestic abuse of males is a silent scotch that many macho men would rather not discuss in public, let alone admit in private that it has become an endemic disease that causes many of its victims to seek solace by indulging in heavy drinking and other conduct unbecoming of responsible men, husbands, fathers and neighbours.

History has shown that alcoholism is the major cause, the ruin and down fall of many individuals, careers, relationships, marriages, families and lives in Kamukunji.

  24. Hats off to the Kenya polce, or should I say a salute to the Kenya police for having undergone a huge transformation since the new constitution was promulgated by the powers that be.

    Why? A call was placed to the head of department who is tasked with dealing with domestic disturbance cases, and here is what the senior officer incharge had to say;

Thanks for your call, and may I know who is calling and where you calling from, please? ... Would you mind holding on for a moment if this is not an emergency call? ... I will get back to you shortly. ...

Hello, is this Mr./Ms. So and So? ... Thank your for your corporation and for asking how the police deals with such cases of domestic assault in our ... jurisdiction.

Under the newly instituted police guidelines with regard to incidencies of domestic assault, all victims of domestic abuse or assault can now report the crime to their nearest police station.

After investigating the case, police will explain the warrant-obtainment process to the victims.

And a short time later or thereafter, a field police unit (FPU) or police patrol unit (PPU) will locate the alleged offender or pertrator and arrest her or him based upon the active warrant for domestic assault, and transport her/him to a jail located at the nearest police station.

Where the alleged pertrator will be booked, and charged with the crime.

I hope I have answered the question to your satisfaction, and let me know or give me a call if there any more information about domestic abuse prevention programs.

The police representative will be happy to forward the information out to you, or refer you to other local orgaizations that help with victims of domestic abuse and their respective families
    .
