Don't be Vague, Mint More Huge Confusion

The political gestation period is already here ready for 2012 elections. Soon it will be mutation galore from both sides of the political divide. And don't count on any your tribal chieftains to keep a float in the impending implosion. Given the ongoing internal divisions, squabbles, fights within the two coalition parties with heat in one begetting heat from the rival, even die hard supporters are better advised to invest their loyalty elsewhere. But this is Kenya with all her unique political landscape, anything is possible.

All the wrangles within the parties, whether on ICC or posts, can be correctly traced to lack of political ideology. All there is presently are mere vehicles to acquire raw political power for personal aggrandisement, PERIOD. All parties are more of cults revolving around individual with no solid traditional identity. All the empty slogans are just that devoid any objective and unifying theme.

All the heat will soon upgrade to an inferno electioneering season set in proper Kenyan style. We haven't seen anything yet from both local and exported Kenyans waxing patriotic in support of their tribal warlords, NA BADO.

Poor Kenyans! The belief that the new constitution was crafted to make the presidency less attractive must have been misplaced given the length of queue of aspirants. Well, Kenya has changed but not Kenyans. No matter your take, the fiasco that was 2007 elections changed Kenya forever. The take off was bumpy and the landing/transition is equally scary.

Poor Arap Mibei of yesteryear is running around like headless chicken, his 'kabila adui' anthem having lost its 2007 magic.

  4. Taabu,

Same style, same script, same language and simply same you, nothing new, that is what happens to "brain - dead" editors. I am glad you have a lot of time on your hands apart from when you are deeply engrossed in "identity theft" to re-cycle stale and meaningless posts.

I Hope that you will not hit the Delete button on me this time round seeing that you currently hold the position of KK "gate keeper" in Chief.

And for those barbs that have been directed @ Mwara"N"gethe by "me", one only needs to look keenly on the style and manner that was used to pen those barbs and you will see similarity if not close resemblance with those of a "gutter - press" editor who after RETIRING from the printing press has perched on Kumekucha.

Threatening the international community with instability is dumbest of all ideas. This is what they want INSTABILITY so that ICC can have more prosecutions and if war erupts then the west can sell more guns to you to kill yourselves.Dumb behind kenyans.get real and get alife.it is a win win for ICC either way chaos or stability.Kenyan solution should be compromise and civility.IF u can make the coalition government work without bias then we might have a way out.

  7. We Kenyans are truly a people without "common sense" (civilized values). Here I am specifically targeting the so called highly educated, intelligent and religious/"saved" kenyans - The ones who should know better:

Let's just check out one group of Kenyans and how they relate to the rest of the Kenyan wanainchi: our our MP's. I do not blame MPs for their greed; I do not hold them accountable for vomiting on our shoes. I blame our rotten values.

Our morals are debased and what we call a value system stinks like the skunk’s odours. For example, when you want to take a matatu home, the temptation to jump the queue is irresistible. At the banking hall or when paying bills, no one sees the logic to wait for his or her turn. The marriage institution? Oh my God! Both wives and husbands play "away games" with their "spare wheels." The wives are even more deadlier than the men as they are "experts" at DECEPTION and know how to conceal their "spare wheel activities" which are usually done with the husbands best friends and associates while the husband is totally clueless about what is happening right under his nose.

Then we have traffic jams and drivers who just cannot let go of their accelerators. We overlap the jams with wanton abandon and when we get nabbed, we part with a bribe. Typical Kenyans!

    Kenyans
have a glut of 'common sense' reservoirs
and that's one of the many reasons why they have no yet marched on to the parliament or state house and demanded the bleeding heads of those con, scam, crooked, cheat, double faced, fork tongued snake headed artists that pass for duly politicians.
    Kenyans
may not yet have a well developed system of government, culture and a way of life that treats all Kenyans who live in Kenya fairly, but that doesn't mean that they lack in common sense.
    Have
you ever been to Europe and East Asia?
    Is
it any different from what's going on in Kenya in terms of hubands and wives using "third wheels" (doughnut tires/USA and dinghy wheels/UK/Europe) as well as accumulation of "spare auto parts" for convinience?
    People
living in East Asian and Southeast Asia are not hang up and stuck-up up on s*xual issues in the same way you are given your 100 years of recent puritanical religious influence from Europe.
    S*x
means very little and different things to the populations living in East Asia and South East Asia.
    What
about real morals? What morals are we really talking about?
    The pendulum
of morality and immorality is moreless the same as the stock market.
    Kenyans
have never been known to be saintly nor do they ever waste their precious days on earth on aspiring to be inducted into the halls of sainthood.
    Kenya
is no way near becoming a perfect society, two wrongs do not make a wright, however, what goes on in some of the East Asian and European nations are plain abhorrent.

  19. French fighter jets struck an air base deep inside Libya and destroyed one of Moammar Gadhafi's planes Thursday, and NATO ships patrolled the coast to block the flow of arms and mercenaries. Other coalition bombers struck artillery, arms depots and parked helicopters.

Libyan state television on Thursday showed blackened and mangled bodies that it said were victims of airstrikes in Tripoli, the capital. Rebels have accused Gadhafi's forces of taking bodies from the morgue and pretending they are civilian casualties.

The international military operation against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's forces may last days or weeks - but not months, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said. But the rebels who largely control Libya's east remain outgunned and disorganized - instead of handing out weapons at a checkpoint, they were distributing sneakers to would-be fighters on Thursday.

The French strikes overnight hit a base about 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of the Libyan coastline, French military spokesman Thierry Burkhard told reporters in Paris on Thursday without elaborating on the target or possible damage.

France's joint chiefs of staff, in a statement on their Web site, said French surveillance aircraft noticed a Libyan combat plane that was flying near Misrata in violation of the U.N. Security Council resolution. A French Rafale fighter jet fired a guided air-to-ground missile on the Libyan jet after it landed at the Misrata air base.

In Tripoli, Libyan deputy foreign minister Khaled Kaim said that the "military compound at Juffra" was among the targets hit before dawn. Juffra is one of at least two air bases deep in Libya's interior, on main routes that lead from neighboring countries in the Sahara region that have been suppliers of arms and fighters for the Gadhafi regime.

The town of Sabha, about 385 miles (620 kilometers) south of Tripoli, has another air base and international airport and is a major transit point for the ethnic Tuareg fighters from Mali and Niger who have fought for Gadhafi for the past two decades. Malian officials say hundreds of Tuareg men have left to fight in Libya in the recent uprising.

Abdel Rahman Barkuli, a Libyan in exile originally from Sabha, said communications with his family there were abruptly cut on Wednesday night and heavy security is barring residents from moving in or out.

  20. Counter-attacks by senior leaders in ODM have exposed sharp difference over the handling of cases of the ‘Ocampo Six’.

Party leader Raila Odinga yesterday declined to answer questions on the contradictory positions the party has taken on hiring of lawyers for three of the Ocampo Six.

He referred journalists to Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o when asked about the intended hiring of lawyers for three of the suspects linked to the party.

Later in the day, Roads Minister Franklin Bett added his voice to the infighting in the party by blaming Prof Nyong’o for "going against positions taken by the party" on ICC cases. "We held a meeting on Thursday, which was endorsed by Prime Minister Raila Odinga and read by the party’s Parliamentary Group Meeting Secretary Ababu Namwamba. We resolved that the party hire lawyers for the three party members," Mr Bett added.

But after the joint statement, Nyong’o contradicted the statement saying it was not the official ODM position.

    Legal Aid

This happened even as it emerged yesterday that Kenya’s Ambassador to the UN had written to the UN saying ODM had softened its stand on the ICC trials.

The twists and turns in ODM continued when Nyong’o sent a short text message to the Press stating that the party had not decided on hiring of lawyers.

"That is the imagination of a few individuals peddling vested interests," said Nyong’o.

He insisted that the party had ‘NOT’ discussed or agreed to any legal aid to any of the Ocampo Six, and any statement attributed to the party in that regard was a personal view.

It is not clear why the party is fighting over the hiring of lawyers, but political analysts said it was probably because the MPs think the party and its leaders could be adversely mentioned during proceedings.

ODM Chief Whip Jakoyo Midiwo supported the view that the party would hire lawyers to represent the party at The Hague since it has been adversely mentioned in post-poll violence.

"In these cases, members of ODM have been adversely mentioned. Hence, it is necessary to have legal representation for the party at the International Criminal Court," said the Gem MP.

Saturday Nation has established that the proposal was raised and endorsed on Tuesday at the party’s National Executive Council-cum-Parliamentary Group meeting chaired by Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Sources who attended the meeting said the proposal was floated by Mr Ababu Namwamba and seconded by Water Minister Charity Ngilu and Nominated MP Musa Sirma, among others.

“Mr Namwamba reasoned that it was good to embrace our friends who voted for us during the last elections so that we demonstrate that the party has not abandoned them at their hour of need as PNU is trying to portray it,” the source said.

This was corroborated by Mr Sirma in a separate interview

  22. Suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto has said he will not accept lawyers hired by ODM party to represent him at The Hague.

The Eldoret North MP said ODM should first withdraw a letter to the UN Security Council that was against deferral of post-election violence cases.

Mr Ruto, who was speaking at Sokyot Secondary School in Turbo, Eldoret West District on Friday added that the party was not sincere it its claim that it was hiring lawyers for him, Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey and radio journalist Joshua Sang.

“The party wrote a letter to the UN that it had no faith in the local judicial system and that we be hanged, now it is turning around to say that it will hire lawyers for us,” Mr Ruto said.

He claimed that the lawyers the party was to hire could be used to contribute to their ‘hanging’ at the International Criminal Court.

“I do not understand what ODM is talking about as it is full of confusion. The party must put its act together and tell Kenyans when it will write a letter to UN Security Council to withdraw an earlier one,”

  23. A section of ODM legislators allied to Eldoret North MP William Ruto have challenged the party’s top leadership to state its actual stand on the post election violence trials.
Even though the MPs - Joshua Kutuny (Cherangany) and Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi)- welcomed the party’s ‘belated about turn’ to have the Ocampo six tried locally, they expressed concern over the mixed signals from the party’s leadership.

“On Tuesday, ODM Secretary General Anyang' Nyong'o said the party had climbed down from having the six tried at the ICC in favour of a credible local judicial mechanism,” the duo said at a news conference in parliament.

“But strangely on Wednesday, Prime Minister Raila Odinga stated that the six should go to the ICC and have their names cleared contradicting the party position which he was party to a day earlier,” they added.

“On Thursday, ODM again contradicted itself as usual with the party’s leadership speaking from both sides of the mouth.”

Educated young minds like you are going to be a nightmare for people like Pogisho and the rest. The sooner you start cracking the whip for change the better it will be for you and thousands of your potential young supportors. The time is now, not yesterday, not tomorrow but today. 30. The Orange Democratic Party is walking a tightrope as it navigates between supporting justice for victims of post-election violence and working on a strategy to reclaim lost ground in the Rift Valley.

The Standard On Sunday has reliably established that while the PM chaired ODM’s Parliamentary Group and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting last Tuesday where members agreed that the party offers moral and legal support to three of the ‘Ocampo Six’, the position was rescinded by the party Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o soon after following a review of the consequences.

Ideally, the party is now torn between those keen at having the party make realistic gains in pockets of Rift Valley and those interested in appealing to victims of post-election violence and retaining credibility in the eyes of the national and international community.

The fresh cracks pose a major challenge to the party that seeks to revamp itself in readiness for General Election, due next year.

The push to hire lawyers for ODM deputy party leader, William Ruto, Chairman, Henry Kosgey, and radio presenter Joshua arap Sang came out of political considerations.

Unlike PNU, whose actions have been viewed as placing impediments in the way of justice, ODM has consistently painted the image of supporting the pursuit of justice for victims of the post-election violence.

Sources at the meeting on Tuesday say the issue of having ODM lawyers at The Hague to take care of party interests were discussed before Roads Minister Franklin Bett proposed that the party gives legal support for Ruto, Kosgey, and Sang.

Assistant Minister Margaret Kamar, Sotik MP Joyce Laboso, and majority of other MPs from other regions supported the proposal.

    Members support

Most MPs expressed concern that the party was not showing support to its members who are facing trials at the ICC. They said this is hurting the party politically as President Kibaki’s party PNU is exploiting this to its advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ...continued....Whereas one group reasoned the party needs to accommodate the interests of the Kalenjin members to regain support in parts of the Rift Valley where Ruto has swayed support against the PM and the Orange party, others argued that Ruto and the other rebels have crossed the red line and were no longer in the party.

Sources at the Tuesday meeting reveal that Bett, Kamar, Laboso and Bomet MP Beatrice Kones pleaded with colleagues to stand with its members especially Ruto and Kosgey, saying the ground had become too hostile for them as they are viewed as ‘traitors’.

Other considerations notwithstanding, the move to reverse the members’ agreement has attracted the ire of a section of ODM MPs. It is now turning into a quiet supremacy battle that pits ODM Parliamentary Group Secretary Ababu Namwamba and deputy Secretary General Joseph Nkaiserry against Nyong’o.

"Huyu Nyong’o anaharibia PM (Nyong’o is ruining it all for the PM). We often discuss issues and arrive at a decision, but he has the tendency of going against the collective position," says a Cabinet minister who did not wish to be seen to publicly criticise a colleague.

Singling out Nyong’o and Orengo as among those "ruining the party", the minister claims the duo add no value "since Raila will still win votes in Nyanza with or without their support."

The minister blames Nyong’o and Orengo for shielding and gradually isolating the PM from other political leaders. Orengo was out of the country during the Tuesday meeting.

    International community

ODM members have previously sought to oust Nyong’o, accusing him of not being in touch with the aspirations of party members.

Members are now seeing the emerging cracks as a threat to ODM’s unity.

"We have been consistent on these issues and probably more believable than our PNU rivals before the United Nations and the international community.

"But owing to the apparent confusion, this obviously destroys that perception," regrets Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo.

The Prime Minister maintains the overall position of ODM has not changed. He said the 2008 post-election violence suspects must be tried at the ICC, unless the Government agrees to establish a competent local mechanism.

In an interview with Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) on Friday, Raila said ODM feared that the suspects would manipulate a local justice system.

"The trial should proceed there (The Hague), until a competent local mechanism is in place, which I don’t think will be achievable," he told RNW.

On the question of legal representation, though, the party is still pulling in different directions. Namwamba and Nkaiserry insist the party had identified lawyers to defend Ruto, Kosgey, and Sang.

Speaking yesterday at his Muhoroni constituency, Education Assistant Minister Ayiecho Olweny supported this position: "Why contradictions and the fuss while we exhaustively discussed and agreed to help the suspects?" he posed.

He said that in the meeting, it was resolved ODM would accord the three the necessary support.

"Nyong’o is not telling the truth about what happened. We were in the meeting with the Prime Minister and it was agreed we would give them possible support," he said.

Ayiecho explained, though, that the gesture is not meant to please or woo Ruto back to the party, but rather "to stand by them as our people".

  32. Is Raila losing grip on the Orange party?

•Differences with MPs over the handling of ODM’s Hague suspects and his apparently waning support in party strongholds point to a developing crisis for the Prime Minister

Is Prime Minister Raila Odinga losing grip of the Orange party? That has been the question in the minds of political analysts and many other Kenyans following the events of the past week.
MPs allied to Mr Odinga differed openly over his stated position over Kenya’s case at the International Criminal Court.

During the ODM national executive council and parliamentary group meeting last Thursday, MPs agreed to sponsor a Bill to set up a local tribunal to try post-election violence suspects and hire lawyers for party members who have cases.

ODM’s parliamentary secretary Ababu Namwaba made the announcement after the meeting chaired by Mr Odinga.

But, hours after Mr Namwamba’s announcement, ODM secretary-general Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o issued a press statement denouncing the PG’s position.
