Best Wishes for KCSE But You’re on Your Own

We live in interesting times, don't we? First it is OFFICIAL, you are on your own as a Kenyan in terms of security. Forget about whining about government when your neighbour resorts to extortion and macabre beheading.

While the government disowns its principal duty to provide national security, it is yet another season of exams starting Wednesday. And reading about the predictable tales of leakages going for as low as KES 2000 in addition to KNEC’s painful and expensive tasks of hiring helicopters and boats to overcome elements of adverse weather leaves you wondering why we continue inventing paths to self-destruction.

Examinations have been reduced to loose all or win all platform to success. And what is more, our national deceptive mind has not spared the evaluation either. We have made deceit our second name so much so that success by any dubious means is an end unto itself.

How nostalgic the Chiromo days when a grade A came after sleepless nights. That was then when industry meant each of its letters. But not anymore when scoundrels re-invent you in their minds and peddle a lie about you here at KK. That is Kenya’s fabric at its purest for you.

Civilized societies would have exams posted to their schools who would post directly to the markers. But not in Kenya where any valuable item will never reach its designated postal address. Our parents are so ready to buy success they wont bat an eyelid purchasing fake or real leakages.

Industrious beheading
Having known first hand a copy typist who attained C- in form 4 but now a city lawyer after using the boss, a college Principal, to rig admission into parallel degree, I know the quacks we are breeding in our streets.

The extra security and financial measures taken by KNEC are NOT a reflection of how industrious but fraudulent we are as a nation. Our national fabric seems to be exclusively made of threads of deceit. And we iron the gab with a hot steam of self-denial. Woe unto a country whose foundations are anchored on primitive and plastic success that is not sustainable.

All the best wishes to the many candidates who adequately prepared for their KCSE exams. They are guaranteed to earn their marks and grades but unfortunately compete against the rotten lot weaned on the doctrine of SUCCESS BY ANY MEANS.

  1. Must Taabu find fault in anything? Jeez, the fellow offers no solutions but streams of whining day in day out. Like they said, you cannot teach an old dog new tricks and so at 53, Taabu will never change his ways since he is a bitter failure.

BTW, Taabu, a kalenjin, who benefited from undeserved Moi scholarship them days only managed to score a measly C- equivalent in the then A levels. So he really knows first hand how failures like him because of political and financial influence gain access to institute of higher learning. However, as evident with Taabu, these breed of 'learned fellows' never contribute constructively to building the nation.

  3. some of you old guys are the ones who need to be taught new tricks at whatever age you maybe.

all you do is sneak attack and hang onto every one of taabu's posts.

why don't you wise fellas offer any new solutions instead of resorting to constant streams of whining 24/7 about what taabu posts or doesn't post on kumekucha?

why waste your precious on being nothing but barking at taabu and hounding taabu's posts for the heck of it?

now why the bile? let me educate you out of your ignorance, KK owners have rejected in more than 3 occassions my posts since they do not adhere to their political interests.

why waste your precious (time?) on being nothing but barking at taabu and hounding taabu's posts for the heck of it?
we try to request for balanced posts, call it barking if you wish. some of the leaders appreciate when we point at obvious bias to tribe and political affiliation.
those who choose to be herded like goats and cheated by Taabu and his ilk can do that. you have already choosen your path sir.

  8. Peter Tosh once said that “my words are the truth and truth causes offences. However, without truth there is no consciousness.” What we are about to write may cause offense to many for they will see the truth no one tells them.

There is something terribly wrong with modern education. To appreciate where we are coming from, let us state what we believe are objectives of education/learning.

    Education can be about:

    (a) KNOWLEDGE. At this level, it is about REMEMBERING the previously learned material. This represents the LOWEST LEVEL OF LEARNING OUTCOMES.

(b)Knowledge should be followed by COMPREHENSION. This is the ability to grasp the meaning of material beyond the knowledge level. This is the lowest level of understanding.

(c)APPLICATION refers the next stage in education which is the ability to use learned material in NEW and CONCRETE PRINCIPLES and THEORIES. This requires a higher level of understanding than comprehension.

(d)The next stage in education should be the ANALYSIS stage. This stage requires an understanding of both content and the structural form of material.

(e)The next stage is SYNTHESIS. This refers to the ability to put parts together to form a new whole. At this level, education stress CREATIVE BEHAVIOUR with great emphasise on the ability to FORMULATE NEW PATTERNS AND STRUCTURES.

(f)The last stage is that of EVALUATION which is the ability to judge the value of materials given based on definite criteria.

This represents the highest level of learning for it incorporates elements of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis and synthesis.

An education system that is about INNOVATIVE THINKING/problem solving should and must emphasise the FOUR highest levels of learning, i.e. APPLICATION, ANALYSIS, SYNTHESIS and EVALUATION in addition to knowledge and comprehension.

Now, lets look at Kenya. When we have exams in Kenya, we have even policemen guarding them to avoid copying. Why is this? Simply because our education is ABOUT KNOWLEDGE, i.e. remembering/parroting EXACTLY what was leant or taught.

However, if we had an education system that emphasises the FOUR HIGHEST LEVELS OF LEARNING, we can allow students to carry whatever they want in the exam for it would be their ability to think CREATIVELY that would matter, and not ability to PARROT what was taught.

That’s how pathetic the situation is and when you wonder why we are unable to SOLVE BASIC PROBLEMS as a nation, looks no further than policemen guarding exams which all Kenyans have gone thru.

  10. I know first hand about the corruption in our education system. My admission to a national schools was mysteriously cancelled and my place quickly given to a son of a famous politician in Moi's era who was in my school.

This guy had performed poorly in the exams but he was well connected and so the back door was just a phone call away.

I felt terribly bad and almost gave up schooling. The irony was that the favoured guy was my best friend in our school!

We were from the same home area schooling far in the heart of Rift Valley. Sadly this good friend of mine died in a fatal car crash in Kansas shortly after he had arrived there to join a university.

  11. as someone said, Mwaran'ethe always finds ways to support Taabu's whinning. shows that we have educated fools who knows how to regurgitate materials conveniently.

therefore, we propose that a good education should promote independence of the mind. without that, we have bootlickers who twist logic and support it with quotes that they have memorised aka parroted from some wazungu books. did i say mwarangethe?

    our response:

Firstly, what is it that we have written you dispute? You are unable to argue and therefore you retort to abuse and sneer which any stiff necked fool can.

Secondly, where have we supported Taabu? If we are able to understand our point is very simple. The fact that we have an education system that concentrates on memorisation is a big problem. As far as we know, Taabu has said nothing of the sort.

  13. To all the candidates who deserve best wishes ... all the best.

But as you go to do your exams, keep in mind its not a big deal to get an A or a B these days. And that getting one is not an end in itself and it does not guarantee you a 'good life' ... and not getting a good grade does not mean an end to you because even those who got Ds in my time look like they are having a 'good life'.

What I would wish you to always remember is that life is about living honestly and honourably, and working for what you need. If you have been doing that you don't need to worry to death about what grades you get ... its irrelevant ... afterall some of the D materials already have the leakages and they will get As and Bs.

Lastly keep in mind what Mwarang'ethe (thank you for that) has explained to you are the objectives of education. That will lead you to the truly good and peaceful life.

  14. Reminds me of the cat and mouse games we used to play with the school authorities and police on two occasions, "O" and "A". You see, during those (Nyayo) days, it was a compulsory to attend the Kenyatta Day celebrations. On that day we hid in nearby bushes for last minute revisions....

  15. Sadly, some of us learn to late the essence of a good education. But the brave ones go back and relearn/internalize the material.

    Good luck to the candidates.

get a life for a change and move on. social networks like kumekucha are not the place to seek affirmation that was denied you as a child. go get it or seek it some where else and get a life while you are still at it.

afyi, i will no longer respond to your angry juvenile tirades about how you have been unfairly treated by certain individuals at kumekucha. get a life and move on from this day, october 21, 2009, forward.

ciao! adios! proset! ukhganit! brezyink! kwaheri! goodbye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  17. @Fake Prefect,
Please have the pleasure to enjoy a response from me to you for once and NEVER AGAIN. Please take note that your intention to divert readers' attention from posts here by serially posting as anon hasn't worked and never will. Readers are slightly above your BASE.

Second, your untiring gimmick to paint a mental picture of 53-year-ord Taabu olny succeeds in expanding your ego. The Taabu you conjure up in your head is very different from the one you read about here. How I laugh when you have been led by my leash by premising your takes on assumptions. Well immerse yourself in the attendant embarassement, if you have any sense of shame!

For good measure you can bleat and rant thinking that you have merited this responce. Well, NOT QUITE. Yours is typical Kenyan mindset we will fight with all the might and vigour. Stop PACKAGING LIES and selling it to gullible readers and shouting yourself hoarse in false satisfaction.

You can choose to heed this call or predictably continue to broadcast your monologues. But we know better than asking your ilk to change their spots.

Please please never pretend to seek what you missed in school here. KK is a POLITICAL blog and not a refereed journal. FYI serial quotes doesn't make you spell intellectual. As a teacher, I meet your ilk with numerous variations and I know you when I see you whehther real or disguised.

Lastly, KK has been there before you and will outlive you. Sorry you don't like what you read but you have no choice and you will STICK with the stuff no matter what. You have numerous choices. Make them or pad your cheeeks.

The posts here at KK are not meant to soothe egos and you are better off surfing the net for what tickles your fancy. No apologies.

PS: The NEVER AGAIN is to avoid falling for reverse logic where you reduce people smarter than you to your level and BEAT THEM WITH EXPERIENCE-sorry keep it to yourself.

  18. I wish all the students success and a word of hope that contrary to some quarters, hard work still pays.

I also want to register my suprise and dismay to the return of moderation. Those with nothing to fear need not muzzle their opponents.

  19. Ah, I see the QUACK (i.e. Mwarangethe) has finally learnt a thing or two from my previous post which ran as follows:

"The operative word here is LOOK.
There is nothing learned about someone who has no capacity to synthesize and apply ideas besides just simply quoting, regurgitating, cutting-paste and so on. So yes, Mwarang'ethe certainly LOOKS like it. But many with eyes can see through his facade. The quack is well placed in KK."

    Hongera, Mwarangethe--live and LEARN!!

extra security and financial measures taken (..) are NOT a reflection of how industrious but fraudulent we are as a nation (let me add i.e a fortified home is not a sign of progress but an expression of how low society has fallen)
    ==

and also as sayra and mwarangethe have also noted above, we have completely misunderstood the concept of success, examination and purpose of good or sound education.

whats more knec is determined to perpetuate this cycle to eternity. at this rate, in a few years, teh state and knec will conduct examinations in a prison like structure complete with warders/wardens where each candidate will be caged in individual cells for the duration of the examination year (i.e no chance of ever getting leakage, hehehe but of course if someone anajuana na prisons boss.....)

many of these people in positions of leadership in kenya are incapable of thinking outside the box.

  21. Taabu, the prefect may be leaving but rest assured there are others who wont shy away from pointing out your hypocrisy and dishonesty. It may be a political blog but as long as you still insist on seeing issues on an ODM are saints and PNU are devils perspective, then grow a thicker skin for your rant above shows that the criticsm does get to you and the fact that you delete many comments that dont support your yesteryears thinking.Like when todays standard writes of the widening rift in ODM then to you that is not anything.

  22. What happens in KUMEKUCHA now is that as soon as one reads an article from other mass media, they jump onto the internet and let loose all their pent up emotions, but actually receive nothing back. They use this as a vehicle to express their misery, but do not receive a tasty treat to make it all right. They use it as a means of lashing out in anger, but do not receive any chastisement to calm them down. They use it as a way of analysing the deficiencies of their country, but do not receive any contrasting views to immediately point out the flaws in their logic. And the problem with this is that once out in the cyber world these opinions are available to everyone. People who agree use this as evidence that they are right and become more entrenched in their views. People who disagree see this as an attack on their viewpoint and immediately go on the defensive and also become more entrenched in their views. Both sets feel the need to argue their point but they do this across the barrier of the world-wide web, and so does not need the immediate response that a good-old fashioned conversation requires. This means that they don't need a well-thought out argument or are forced to acknowledge the gaps of logic in their stance. All this serves to do is create a situation where citizens can no longer focus on development, as they spend the entire 5yrs waiting for an incident that re-enforces their belief or pokes a hole in somebody else's argument, at which point they can jump back onto the internet to add their two cents to a never ending debate that just continues the cycle endlessly.
