Drums Of War: Terrible Stuff Most Kenyans Don’t Know About

The Somali situation is very much in the news but many Kenyans have no idea that we have been at war with the Somalis before—and it was for a long time. There was heavy loss of life in that war (the numbers are still a closely guarded state secret) and in my book the Somalis won that war… easily. Indeed even Kenyans who were old enough to understand stuff in the 50s and 60s are hardly aware of how serious the Shifta war was. It lasted from 1964 to around 1968. Some people say significant skirmishes continued well into the 70s.

This is the war that the Kenyan government never wanted to acknowledge. At best it was always downplayed when the government did grudgingly agree that something was going on in Northern and North Eastern Kenya. Those Kenyans who knew that there was indeed a war going on were those who were touched by it like in the story I am about to tell.

But before I tell you my fascinating story about the “war that never was,” let me say that those who have been reading this blog for a long time are well aware of the fact that I have been shouting myself hoarse here warning about the time bomb that are the Somalis and that explosive part of Nairobi called Eastleigh which for all intents and purposes is really part of Mogadishu. If you doubt this then I also need to tell you that proven intelligence sources have indicated that dreaded Somali pirates come to Eastleigh to relax and enjoy their money from piracy activities while preparing to launch their next “mission.” You can find anything, and I mean anything in Eastleigh. From a US passport that will get you into America without any problem to some for the latest assault weapons. To be honest I don’t mind those quality suits that would ordinarily cost about Kshs 15,000 in parts of Nairobi but go for a paltry Kshs 1,500 in Eastleigh.

But let me get on with my story.

Mutunga (his real name) was a police constable and driver to a senior high ranking policeman in Isiolo. The year was 1967 and the Shifta war (which was mostly a guerilla war) was ongoing. Mutunga was driving his superior one lovely sunny afternoon when suddenly without any warning the police Landrover they were in was lifted high in the sky. They had hit a landmine. When the vehicle landed on the ground again with a thud Mutunga’s boss was badly injured with a suspected punctured lung. Mutunga himself was much worse off. Being at the front of the Landrover he had taken the full brunt of the mine. All the bones in his leg had been shattered and were almost powder. He was obviously in great pain.

Frantic efforts were made to radio Nairobi for an aircraft to airlift him for urgent medical attention in the city. The police officer running the operation got Mutunga’s boss to a hospital in Meru where the doctors grimly said that had he arrived moments later he would have almost certainly died because his lungs had stuck together after the explosion meaning that as he breathed there was no movement in his lungs. The police officer breathed a sigh of relief at the fact that one officer had been saved even as he battled to save Mutunga’s life. He finally convinced a “mzungu” pilot to land his small aircraft in the Isiolo airstrip after running police lorries across it several times up to the moment the aircraft started it’s final approach to ensure that there were no mines.

My source says that he will not forget that moment in the aircraft when he bid Mutunga goodbye giving him a bottle of water to sip (thirst is a sign of enormous internal bleeding). The brave policeman was still answering “Yes sir” as loudly as he could even as he lay there dying with his badly broken body. Radio contact was maintained as the aircraft flew back to Nairobi with its’ sole passenger. A humble police officer who had never been on an aircraft before. In those days aircrafts could not land at Wilson Airport at night because there was no electricity there yet. So as the aircraft approached Embakassi Airport the pilot heard some strange noise at the back of his aircraft. He did not need to look back to know that Mutunga had died minutes away from medical attention. The information was radioed back to Isiolo and the sad news was passed on to his colleagues. The Shifta war had claimed the precious life of yet another Kenyan.

Opinion is divided as to how that war finally petered off. Some say that President Kenyatta got the help of Tanzania president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who acted as a go-between and talked to the then Somali president Siad Barre of Somalia to “cool off.” Others say that the war just run out of steam as other priorities emerged for Somalis. Whatever happened the fact is that to this day the Somali flag has 5 stars on it and yet there are only 4 provinces in the country (at least there were at that time). The fifth province is 6 districts in Kenya namely Isiolo, Garissa, Moyale, Wajir, Marsabit (I forget the sixth). What I am saying is that the Somalis already have what appears to be a good enough reason to be at war with Kenya.

Incidentally the Tanzanians are very serious about their security. A few years ago some factions in Somalia invaded a remote part of that vast country. The response from Dar was immediate and decisive. The army was sent in and the problem was solved albeit with major loss to human life.

I personally witnessed a Somali man being refused entry into Tanzania at the Namanga border about 2 years ago. His papers were in order but immigration officials exercised their prerogative to deny entry.

Contrast that to Nairobi’s response. When a Kenyan immigration officer sees a Somali, they see money and a fat bribe. Tanzanian immigration officers are also corrupt but they know the sharp distinction between corruption that endangers national security and corruption that does not. Again former President Moi’s reason for allowing the influx of Somalis into the country was because the foreign exchange they brought in kept the country going at a difficult time. President Kibaki had a chance to tackle the problem but his response like in everything else has been inconsistent, disjointed, indecisive and devoid of any long term strategy. During Kibaki’s tenure, flights out of Wilson Airport to Somalia have been grounded at least twice for short periods of time. The border with Somalia has also been closed once only to be reopened. Army patrols on the same stretch of our porous borders started way too late.

Yet even a primary school child would have seen a long time ago that Somalis are a serious threat to our national security. For instance all the guns used in crime and murder in the country (save the ones belonging to policemen) come in from Somalia. You can be sure that political assassins are bound to use the same the hardware. The taxman also gets deprived of billions of shillings in taxes by the Somalis in Eastleigh. I am told that these days people import stuff from Dubai and receive it at Eastleigh. Yep Eastleigh is becoming an increasingly large inland port in Kenya.

The bottom line is that now it is way too late to do much about the Somalia issue except wait for what is inevitably coming to us.

People are talking about Kenyan soldiers launching offensives to protect the border. It’s fun talking about war and how tough the Kenya army is, but the truth is that this is laughable because if full scale war ever broke out, Somalis have a base to comfortably operate from and launch their attacks from that is right at the heart of Nairobi. I am talking about Eastleigh of course. How do you even begin to divide the Kenyan Somalis from the Somalia Somalis? And we should all know by now that the Somalis are masters of guerilla warfare (ask American Marines) so they will quickly neutralize Kenyans’ alleged massive military hardware and personnel to nought—just like they did in the 60s when they did not have an Eastleigh to operate from.

Will the last person leaving Kenya please remember to kill the lights.

  1. Chris,
your post sends a cold chill down my spine coz its the honest truth.Politicians used the somalis issuing them with IDs to vote for them during the past elections and now they have taken over Eastleigh hence the increase of crime in the city. When a bomb goes off in the heart of the city, then u will hear likes of Saitoti,Ali and their security cronies scramble to put security together but as of now, they are still enjoying the status quo though thugs are running a mock

  2. A naive view, at best. But of course fear (and war) mongering demands a simple message.
btw--what is Somaliland? which star in the flag?

  3. .....and when they get richer they move from Eastleigh to either South C, Fedha estate or South B.

I'm told they have now started moving to places like Hurlingham and Westlands, then maybe they will start to occupy places like Runda, Muthaiga, Karen and Nyari, and maybe become neighbours with the likes of Kibaki, Raila, Kalonzo and Michuki.

Once that happens, and once we want to improve security in Kenya by rounding them up, and finding those who are here illigally, then all they will need to do is to visit the bigwigs and give them a stern warning. Have they already given us a warning that if we delve into their matters they will bomb buildings such as Times Tower and KICC?

Nairobi is slowly sinking into a 'Wild Wild West', and now I'm hearing the sea could swallow Mombasa in 20 years time.... Guys don't you think the only good city left as we near Vision 2030 realisation will be Kisumu?

The government should start investing in this cleanest city in Kenya.

  6. Immigration is a funny thing-it can export future presidents of America or it can bring foreign troublemakers to your neighbourhood

if immigrants go somwhere and find the rule of law is upheld then they have to behave, even the bad apples know the law can deal with them much worse because they are guests in someone else's home

but if they move to a place with a rotten system long past its sell-by date and due for an overhaul they can even physically destroy such a place

funny how all problems no matter how unrelated seem to lead back to the same issues of governance, law and integrity

  7. What embarrassing ignorance! You obviously know nothing whatsoever about military affairs and your story is but a vain and spiteful attempt at tarnishing the Kenya military's capabilities, traitorous idiot!
I suggest you go and do your research on the Kenya military properly, including talking to professional military officers, just as a real journalist would. You will get the surprise of your pathetic existence. Hint: The Kenya military has war plans for every possible contingency including wars with Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Somalia, including your vaunted Somali guerillas, and is the most powerful, best trained professional military in East and Central Africa.
The US wasn't really defeated in Mogadishu, they simply suffered casualties their politicians could not accept due to wrong tactics. Only a mindless ignorant fool like you can believe that a few hundred sandal wearing ragtag militia can defeat the resourceful military of a superpower. US politicians sent in Army Rangers who are not trained in Urban warfare (Instead of Marines). If you want to know about US capabilities, go and find out what the US Marines did in Falluja city, Iraq. They fought, house to house, slaughtering and routing in one week Al Qaeda vermin including the late terrorist Mousab al Zaqqawi, the animal who introduced TV beheadings to the world.
Like i said, there is much you simply dont know about military affairs so stop pretending that you do, you look stupid.

  8. Good military strategy and proper intelligence could hand the Somalis a major blow. Our intelligence agencies locally should monitor the situation of Somalis who reside here. I believe the Somalis themselves will not want things to escalate because that will impact on their comfortable existence here.

  9. Why do you also conveniniently fail to mention that the al-shaabab have also laid claim to the Ogaden province of Ethiopia.Could that be the real 5th star? And for your info Ethiopia hosts more Somalia Somalis than Kenya does. But since this fact doesnt fit into your story you choose to ignore it.

Arguments are not won by the number of explitives. That amounts to mchongwano albeit of adult breed. You wax knowledgable in bandying BEST ARMY IN E and C Africa. Well nostalgia never caused constipation, indulge.

And FYI war is never won on tables. Ever heard of counterfactual (what if) causal theory? Many Kenyan soldiers retire with no real war fought outside hitherto lucrative peace keeping. All they can say is what they would have (not did).

Next time you want to be a smart apologists package it with equally smart logic lect you are left propping a dummy.

  12. It does no good to pour vitriol on Kumekucha's effort to bring up an issue that needs consideration and discussion and awareness. People like Kimi Raikonnen never see any good in others yet they themselves expect to be praised. He can bring up the "more reliable" information he has without calling anybody an idiot. Why does he bother to read the blog of an idiot? Why can't he start his own and see how many "non-idiotic" contributions he will get?
KK, I may not wholly agree with the information you give here, but I appreciate the fact that you are able to bring up issues and topics that make us aware of what is happening around us. I have read about the Somali potential threat to Kenya, but it is until I read your piece that I sat up and realized that it could be more serious than I thought. Even if the info' you have given is inaccurate or incorrect, it has nevertheless made me to give more consideration to the issue than I had previously.

    Our comments:

We are told that, when Alexander captured a pirate, he asked the pirate why he was molesting him (Alexander) in the sea.

The pirate responded with a free spirit. "How darest thou molest the whole world? But because I do it with a little ship only, I am called a thief; thou doing it with a great navy, art called an emperor."

Even more interesting, today, we hear people in France, and other places talk about liberty, equality and fraternity.

However, few know that, these words and values were founded by the pirates even before the French revolution. Who knows, they might inspire Somalia the way old pirates inspired France.

  16. This demonising of the Somali is disgusting. Like the Indians, they are smarter than any ordinary black Kenyan, they work collectively to improve their lot and they have a lot of trust amongst themselves (see Hawala banking for example and note that eastleigh is one of the safest neighborhoods in nbi). The Somalis are people to learn from. The Kenyan Somalis, in particular, must be spared from this bashing.

Kenya, as the rest of the Horn of Africa, has a lot to gain from political (and economic) stability in Somalia--Kenya's investment in the peace process there is testimony. It would help to think a little more rationally about this issue, as against being informed by raw emotion. Maybe that's too hard to ask of world renown tribalists and xenophobics?

Let's not forget that the Union of Islamic Courts had ensured that Somalia's development indicators (eg education)had at one time paralled those of Kenya, the so-called beacon of stability. I see no reason why Kenya should fight America's war.

  17. As a Kenyan Somali, I can only see paranoia in your article. So what is the war you are talking about? You write about a historical event, the so-called Shifta war, mix it with some current events but only you probably understand the result. I also don't understand the blaming of Somalis for the increased crimes. For all I know, most of them are interested in offering cut-price goods which as it happens many of you appreciate, than in pointing a gun at and robbing you. Nearly all the crimes in Nairobi are committed by Kenyans and it is extremely extremely rare for a Somali to commit these crimes. Go get the statistics from Vigilant house if you care.

I am from Mandera (the district you apparently said you forgot in your article - no surprise there)and I know there are a lot of guns on the Somali border town of Bula Hawa but it is extremely difficult to bring them to Nairobi. It takes about 2 days to travel by bus from Mandera to Nairobi and there is only about one plane leaving there daily. It is too much of a hassle and too risky to bring a gun from there. It is easier and closer to do it from Uganda or Tanzania.

You should be careful not to blame your faults on Somalis for many reasons. First, because it is unfair, wrong, jingoistic and dangerous. Ask the Kenyans in the diaspora. Last thing you want to see when you are abroad is read those Tabloids with those screaming headlines that blame even the death of Michael Jackson on foreigners. Plus Kenya is itself not a homogeneous country, and you know, there are Somalis who live in Kenya. Alienating them has always being the policy of successive governments but blaming them on something we know they don't do maybe pushing it too far.

  21. Spin it whichever way you wish but I did go ahead to highlight why I think Somalis (and Indians) are actually smarter, and which is FACT. The truth is always painful. Perhaps if you spent less time hailing your greedy lords and kings, waiting to feed on the sporadic crumbs falling off of their filthy tables, you might just learn that you can do things on your own if you join up with others. It's a rather uncomplicated concept the Somalis are demonstrating rather well.

  47. Anon 1:01, first of all, try to respond like a mature person because if you don't, I won't give you the privilege of responding to you next time. How am I treating you like a thrash? I was born in Mandera. I grew up in a very difficult situation. Many people there are poor. I worked hard as much as I could, went to school and I am now in university. I am simply against the idea of blaming Somalis for something I know they are not responsible for in any way and I won't relent on that.

We all know that when things get tough, be they political, economical or social, in a country where there are immigrants, then there is always the tendency to blame immigrants. It is the same across the west where the recession is now biting and people are blaming foreigners (including Kenyans of course) for something we all know billionaire bankers are responsible. Same with crimes and other problems with this country.

It is a SOCIAL problem. You or rather we (makes me rather uncomfortable saying we as I feel so foreign with this attitude) must get rid of it by moulding your/ourselves. It has now changed to kidnapping children. This is NOT the fault of Somalis or anyone for that matter. It more has to do with a parent not raising their child in the right manner as they should. If there were not Kenyans willing to murder or kidnap a child, then even if there were guns on the street like the soil, they would be useless as no one would pick them to commit a crime.

    ReplyDelete
  48. What I don't understand is why are you blaming the Somalis? I mean for what? If we are to be honest, we all know who commits the crimes in Nairobi. It is simply idiotic to blame Somalis for that. As for guns, I am very sure most of them come from the border with Uganda. As I said in in my earlier post, it is not impossible but too much of a hassle to bring a gun all the way from Mandera. Or even Garissa etc.

Anyway, what is it with you guys pretending that Somalis are evil to begotten rid off. This is an extremely dangerous concept in a very heterogeneous country like Kenya. You don't realise it but by the time you do, it would be too late. Next you would be blaming the entire Kikuyu community for the crimes after the Somalis are expelled. Then maybe blame Luos for a lack of fish in Lake Victoria. And so on.

There is toooooo much wrong with Kenya and everyone would agree with me that Somalis are merely scapegoats for the many ills bedevilling this country.

  59. At the end of the day dont forget our borders were drawn with a ruler and pencil. I think the problem is that we never integrate minority groups such as Kenyan Somalis into the political process. North Eastern is barren, and neglected, if we actually tried to integrate its development as part of the rest of Kenya then we probably would not have some of the issues we have now.

I personally think though, that the militias are far more trained up than we are, as some once told me about Uganda, they have been training for 20 odd years, us peacekeeping (the best defense) but actual warfare isnt that much. As for the border, we cant even really close it because of human rights violations so that idea's out.

But current threats from Al Shahaab should not be acceptable because we have sat and let them try to sort things out themselves with the Somali government, and then now they want to threaten us when we have hosted all their clandestine activities? No, if they start talking like that then we should start thinking of how to deal with Eastleigh covert trading.

Somalia right now is like that relative that always spoils for a fight or argument, whether with basis or not. We should not have to roll over, when we get threats from a group that is supported first of all by a non African group, which is ideologically skewed, and has brought us nothing but problems.

Kenya has had a porous border for too long , with inadequate border checks, which has allowed madness to infiltrate our already mad system. Somalia does not even technically exist now, it is a series of lands ran by warlords, de facto 5 countries, and those warlords will do the same thing as Afghanistan, start fighting with each other once they finally have control. They should annex somalia into 6 states, all run as a confederation, like old USA until they want to make a decision on whether to be Somalia.

I feel you...please ignore that anon fellow...
Yes, Kenya has very very serious social issues, but most importantly we have dire economic issues that have almost gotten out of control. I am willing to bet that 99% of the readers have no idea how serious the kidnapping issue really is...my friends if you live in those so called posh areas I would advice you to walk at minimum in twos after dark.

Unfortunately we are not as informed as we think we are, otherwise we would not fall into the trap of blaming others for our failures...
Lets not generalize and assume all Somalis are the problem. If any Tom, Dick and Harry can buy a Kenyan birth certificate, passport and ID, can anyone prove to me they are Kenyan (whatever that means)? And lastly it is juvenile to blame a buyer for purchasing anything, blame the sellers greed. Our politicians know us very well, how else would a very prominent politician vouch for the moving of the Eastleigh Airbase, while on the other hand has taken kitu kidogo to approve the sell of part or all of the existing Airbase land... Do we really know what is happening in this land or do we simply gather our information from our dailies and CNN and assume we are fully informed?

Look, we liberated you from those racist Indians who controlled almost all the business transactions of Kenya as well as treating you Baboons like the monkeys you people are. There's a Somali saying "Do not come to the aide of a dumb person because that person will be ungrateful to you afterwards", in other words you Baboons havent realized that we have kept your catastrophic economy afloat all these years. Why blame us when we just worked hard and got rich in the process. This truly a matter of Jealiousy. Thats all it comes down to, because you Baboons do not have the god given business intellect to be successful in your own homeland. As Somalis we might be killing each other back home but we still love each other and we are well aware of the fact that we are one of the most beautiful and intelligent people in the continent of Africa. We are just going through a little dark history in our countries history but I assure you we will come back from this with such a promising future because of all the educated young Somalis that have been educated in the diaspora. At the moment you people are complaining about the war generation that were able to build all types of business with limited education I suggest you imagine when the diaspora comes to town, then you will be more messed up.

  84. Taabu, i apologise to Chris for my abusive remarks. I am sorry i got carried away.
However, i will not take back my view that his demonisation of our military is totally uncalled for, and merely goes to show how pathetically ill informed he is. Why doesn't he talk to any Army friends he may have and find out the truth? Does he for instance know that Kenya has the ONLY functioning Air Force in the region? Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania have no air worthy fighter jets (just unserviceable already mothballed Mig-17s from the 1950s and 60s), and have only helicopter gunships as 'Air forces'. In comparison, Kenya has 24 F5Es, even if they are 1978 models, with another 15 on order with modern avionics. Kenya also has the only reputable military college in the region at Karen where students earn degrees in military science, and has been training not just Kenyan officers, but also personnel from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and DRC.
When Chris therefore gleefully makes baseless claims that Kenya's military is weak and that they cant deal with Somali guerillas, without showing how those thugs can defeat a standing professional army, save for that harebrained attempt at drama with a shifta story from the 60s, he doesn't just display his intellectual vacuity and bankruptcy, he exposes that his real intent all along was just to spread lies, dishonesty and malice aforethought against the Armed forces. That, in my book, amounts to unpatriotism and it borders on treason to praise gangsters who have made claims on Kenyan territory.

  88. Ilyas, owning a few successful non-tax paying retail businesses confined within a section of the city, and that compete with others in the informal economy, or even buying a few plots here and there, does not amount to taking over Kenya's economy. You would have to be represented overwhelmingly in and across BOTH the informal sector and top tier business. In this regard, why are you not represented in Gikomba, Kawangware, Wakulima, Karatina or Kongowea markets? How come you are not in those exhibition stalls in your hundreds like other Kenyans? How many blue chip companies do Somalis own and which are those, if any? How many Somali owned industries are in the Industrial areas of various Kenyan towns from Mombasa to Nairobi to Kisumu? Can you name any? In a nutshell, what the heck are talking about? You guys love chewing miraa while seated at coffee tables yet you do not own a single coffee shop!
The Borana women are far more beautiful than your wild Somali women who all seem to wear the same smelly perfume. Don't they ever wash? You have several groups in the UK. Most of them are bus drivers, mini cab drivers or claiming off the social security system.

Then you have the rest who sit in Somali owned cafes, chewing miraa all day.

There are major problems with Somali youth in places like Southall with knife crime. They are killing their own, like the Mungiki.

I had a somali tell me that the more wives he married in the UK, and the more children he had, the more money he could get off the social security system.

In no time, he had gone from earning minimum wage, to starting a business.

My problem is with Pirates, and Al Shabaab having easy access to Kenya. Along with all the ammunition they bring in which has increased the crime.

There is no country that is grown by its immigrant populace doing manual jobs abroad or running small time businesses. You need to go to UK and acquire KNOWLEDGE, not sell mboga and earn a few pounds and start insulting others coz you have loose change. I refer you to anon 6/30/09 5:46 AM. You can do business in kenya for all we care, we have a liberalised market. Ask yourself why kenya dominates the East and Central Africa 600 million people economy. Its not selling geans in Eastleigh, its called brain power! Thats what you lack and refuse to acquire, am not saying we are there yet but at least we are trying. Stop being content working as slaves driving cabs, cleaning toilets, selling shirts in UK. The Indians who transformed india are those who studied and returned to india not those in Southall. Those who think and think BIG. The same to China. Go to top academic institutions in the world and find asians looking for knowledge, doing research and looking for solutions /answers as you serve them coffee and wait for a tip. This also applies to many other Africans, kenyans included, in the diaspora who have now confined themselves to narrow thinking.
    DO YOU CATCH THE DRIFT?

  109. I think we need to set some facts straight. There is a lot of myth about Somalis that I will try to debunk.

Myth number one: The piracy issue. Contrary to what many of you believe, Somalia is itself divided and some parts of it have their own government where peace prevails just like Kenya. These are the two autonomous regions of Somalilland and Puntland, the former in fact want independence from Somalia although no one recognises them. The piracy issue takes place ONLY in one region which is Puntland. Ironically, that is a region that has some form of government and where lawlessness is not rampant. Now the other remaining part is southern Somalia. This is where big cities like Mogadisho and Baidawa belong to and where Al-Shabab rules most of it and where indeed absolutely not even one single piracy incident took or takes place. What is more, the piracy issue as many of you know is just a recent phenomenon that just began about 1 or 2 years ago.

Myth number 2: Al-Shabab rules the whole of Somalia. In fact, they rule only a large swath of Southern Somalia and in this area as I said earlier, no piracy takes place. Big cities like Baidawa and Kismayo where Al-Shabab have taken over, they have imposed Sharia law, something which many Somali want, and there is law and order.

Myth number 3: Al-Shabab wants to attack or take North Eastern. This is a myth. How can Al-Shabab take North Eastern with Ak-47s? The most sophisticated weapon Al-Shabab posses is the so-called technicals which is basically a land-cruiser with a mounted machine gun. Kenya has one of the strongest armies in the region and arguably in the whole of Africa so how can Al-Shabab take the entire North Eastern province (the third largest province in Kenya) with AK-47 and land-cruiser with machine guns? That said, it is absolutely unwise for Kenya to intervene in Somalia because it is difficult for any organised military to defeat guerilla fighters since that is what Al-Shabab are. Cue Ethiopia and the US. In this regard, I believe Kenya should maintain the Moi Policy of neutrality. No matter what the US wants, Kenya must let Somalis sort out the mess amongst themselves because if they do intervene in Somalia, there will be no doubt in my mind that this will be be biggest mistake in the history of Kenya. There is probably no military in Africa as battle-hardened as the Ethiopians and yet they failed miserably. The world's superpower failed there too. It is not about where the balance of military power lies for that is clear to everyone (Al-Shabab included of course) but whether you can defeat an enemy that sees you but you never see him.

I think there has being a lot of misinformation going on in the media and the risk is that if people are not wise to discern the myths from the facts, then this will lead to a catastrophic result.

We Somalis in Kenya have no problem with being in Kenya. We have being marginalised historically by successive governments and we are now, albeit slowly, starting to be seen in the national TV. If we are rubbed the wrong way, all those bitter memories will come back and this will not be good for this country (I am speaking as someone whose nomadic grandpa was murdered by GSU for no reason other than being a Somali in the so-called Shifta war.)

PS: for those of you who say I should go to Mogadishu when I graduate etc. Well, I have no problem with going to Mogadishu except of course that is not my city as I was born in Mandera. And I am not studying in Kenya although that is irrelevant and my cousins study at Kenyan universities. In any case, like other Kenyans, we contribute to the country, pay tax and anything.

Striking the match may seem easy but putting out the fire will surely be no mean feat. Hatred must stop and the media must stop their hateful, lie-peppered campaign against us.

  110. Remember, UK and other western Europe countries are now being surpassed by the East Asian countries and other emerging nations which were their colonies. Why? coz they are still dreaming about their former greatness and basking in former glory. The tables have changed, you snooze you loose. They, these nations, have sent their 'young turks' to top learning centers around the world, learning from the best around the world. Then they RETURN and use their newly acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in their local environment. See for yourselves the results, need i say any more? You are now content with selling chinese made jeans to your brother and then claim greatness. How does that help your country/ people? The truth is that IMMIGRANTS ARE SLAVES in those countries, they benefit from your cheap labour. They also get your best doctors and researchers and use them. Abass, you said "Myth number 3: Al-Shabab WANTS to attack or take North Eastern" Do you mean its a myth they CAN do this or its a myth that they WANT to do this? The latter is a FACT, the former is a MYTH. They have openly laid this claim, a claim quietly haboured by many hardline somalis since siad barre days.
If Al shabaab will stop piracy, restore order in somalia, grow their economy, return refugees, respect kenya and other neigbours we welcome them. Trust me, kenya looses alot from an unstable somalia, from insecurity to trade disruption, from influx of refugees to illegal goods hurting our industries

In the same way YOU are actually building the countries where you are working as toilet cleaners, clerks, waiters, porters and other cheap manual jobs NOT Somalia, Kenya or any other African country. ALL the emerging great economies in the world are being built by their citizenry building industries, export factories creating jobs for almost everyone and even jobs for immigrants like you. 114. Well who is kenyan, maasai lives in kenya & tanzania, jaluo lives in kenya, uganda, some in south sudan, luyha in kenya & uganda, pokot in kenya & uganda, turkana in kenya, uganda, sudan, ethiopia, kikiyus and all bantus migrated from congo and zaire, borana in kenya & ethiopia, coast people another story, so in reality most good lands were inhabited by maasa untill the british came. My fellow kenyans our country was artificially created and no can say he or she is more kenyan than the other one. With somalis u are picking on the wrong bone, the economy and coutry is run by europeansa and indians. We all no the truth, plus whatever hate you have for somalis will not make your life better, as a matter of fact the stranglehold the indians had on local business has been broken. A kenyan from the country side can come and get goods from somalis in eastleigh on credit and pay later indians never did that, they only supplied their own indian stores alll over kenya. Just work hard and pray the next election goes okay since if civil war breaks out NEP will not loose anything, by the way civil war will not easily break out because the MZUNGUS have so much vested interest that they will not allow it, the british army will invade if there is problems. Wakenya wacheni uhasidi fanyeni kazi.

  115. Can anyone here demostrate FACTUALLY how immigrants have SIGNIFICANTLY improved their countries of ORIGIN. We are happy to get foreign exchange from our kenyans working abroad but does this really uplift kenya? Has kenya made any significant change from these funds. 80% of our population still wake up to look for food. When will we look east and learn? This is not just a somali problem, can we think beyond being immigrants doing manual jobs and small businesses

  116. One thing i know most of these people with negative comments about somalis are all living in europe or america, easy to pass judgements bur ask the peole in eastleigh if they are really upset. Ask yourself who is kenyan, most people have no clue that the turkana people are kenyans and have been completely ignored, they are starving, no clothes, no schools, no hospitals, not respected. So i can go on and on and on.

You need to travel around and those scales in eyes will begin to fall off!

If anyone cleans toilets here in UK it's Kikuyus and jaluos MOSTLY Jaluos. Kikuyus once they come here they too venture into business opportunities. Many Kikuyus here in London are into export and import, horticultual (flowers) business, real estate na kadhalika!

Somali dont do shitty jobs thats against our culture. we would rather die than clean someone shit!

  119. Anon 6/30/09 7:26 AM though i agree kenya was artificially created, you are either a liar or ignorant by claiming that Indians never used to or dont give credit to kenyans. This is another lie by a somali (sorry) to try and claim indirectly, as seen here before, that you are our LIBERATORS. Let me tell you a few FACTS. We have never really liked asians and they have made their mistakes but at least:
    1. They have partnered with Kenyans on many development fronts. There are countless examples here, am sure you know a number. As a result, India as a country has been a major trade partner for kenya;
    2. They dutifully pay taxes, levies and licences. These are the taxes that are used to pay our police to fight insecurity caused by guns from somalia;
    3. Have grown big industries and factories that have created many jobs and made many exports to the entire ECA region eg Sameer Africa, Bidco, Nation Media etc. Tell me how many kenyans have somalis employed? You import your friends from mogadishu;
    4. They have many proffessionals from doctors to engineers serving this nation. I saw one Dr Pancholi, a Havard graduate dermatologist, on K24 saying how he turned down a million dollar job in US to come back and make a difference. He has many employees in his clinic in Yaya offering top quality service for the whole EAC. There are countless examples like these;
    5. They have at least tried to integrate with kenyans on many areas. I can tell you of friends married to indians, though few, its happening. Look at our indian cricket team doing us proud and flying our flag proudly!;
    6. They have given back to the kenyan society eg look at the charities and foundations they have formed and efforts they have made even to the plight many from IDPs to refugees like somalis;
So please, this is what we call mutual benefit. We would be happy if Al Shabaab can work with us mutually if you choose them.
We just want a stable somalia and a somali community doing above board business and that respects Kenya and its people instead of calling us Baboons and other insults seen here simply coz you own a few retail stores in Nairobi and UK.

  121. Well you are right about Indians contributing, my comments was in response to the much broader negative about somalis in general, there is kenyan somalis now contributing since they started to intergrate but we were fully marginalised for so long as non kenyans by the gov't. My point is i have a lot of arguments with somalis from somalia about using profane language about kenya. My family is mixed with all other kenyan communities, i am related to jaluos, kikuyus and so forth. The point about indians is that they don't treat the local mwananchi with respect but socialise with the elite and do business with elite, i don't to get off topic but let's get along and stop this nonsense, i will use my nickname so that we can address each respectfuly.

  123. Anon 6/30/09 7:39 AM you are PERFECTLY Kenyan and no one disputes that. From your comments it is believable to say you can die for Kenya. I believe Abass can too from his many contributions in this blog. Ignore the anons making adverse comments. I think the general concern it is so easy to see a good number of Kenyan Somalis who have attached themselves to Somalia, though some have never been there. They have placed their loyality to Somalia than Kenya and have started showing disrespect to our country. We may fight and kill ourselves internally but that should not be cause for insults and disrespect. Wwe know many somalis from Somalia have kenyan IDs and Passports which has been the means for further opportunities abroad. And that is all fine, but claiming that you are now the ones feeding us, supporting our economy and 'liberating' us is, at the very least, naive and ignorant. We cant wait to deal with somalia as a country, its in our best interest

    ReplyDelete
  124. Have lived in the US for a number of years, worked with refugees from different countries on adjustment issues, etc. Here are some of the basic things we had to teach Somalis:

    1. Flush toilets; many had never flushed a toilet.

    2. Flick a light switch

    3. Cook on a gas stove

    4. Hold a pen

    5. Use a fork

    6. Teach their women how to use sanitary pads

    7. Stay in school; i.e, High School.

We hope that in time Somalis will be able to adjust, assimilate and adapt to modern culture and civilization.

  125. The head of police in Somalia Mohamed Warsame Nur 'Darwiish', is a UK resident paid by UK govt to do the job. His deputy Ahmed Hashi Tajir too is also a UK resident. They were both refugees living in UK doing those 'menial jobs' you like to call them before they were appointed by UK govt to return back to help re-build Somalia.
They get full salary from UK govt Plus attendance allowance. Plus quality bonus. Plus child tax credit.

There is a lot of secrets I can tell you about between Somalis in UK including Former Somali interior minister Mohamed Guled Ga'amadheere who is a British citizen, with a home and family in Leytonstone, East London.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Kose you said "The point about indians is that they don't treat the local mwananchi with respect but socialise with the elite and do business with elite"
I have worked with KENYAN Indians for many years and it is very misleading to claim the dont socialise with mwananchi. I once worked in Indaa and ate githeri from those mathees with an indian boss. Indians like other communities have all sorts of people including snobs. I can tell you that if you are a black African, a number of somalis will comfortably interact with you friendlier if you were muslim, unlike indians. Boranas are not like this. Go to Eastleigh and try to get a stall from the now newly acquired Somali buildings, you will not get a space. TEST THIS TODAY and see what i mean. Spaces are going to somalis, whether kenyan or somali. They are buying off buildings and pushing of indegenous people out, but then again you cant force someone to rent you space! I havent seen this with indians. Am not claiming that somalis are not social but the contribution of indians in this nation and their integration in everything from sports to employment, from business to culture/ religion has earned them a special place. They have their mistakes but we can live with them. Can you follow suit? Only time will tell

  129. About teaching somalis how to flush toilets and all those other things, I don't why you are surprised, in Africa as you very well know their is people from the urban area and the coutryside, and believe we have those in kenya too that have not a toilet, don't know how to flick a light, never seen a car, don't have shoes, so please spare me with those silly comments, you are forgetting all about your other kenyans who live on less than a dollar a day right here in nairobi.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Well i am talking about as who are kenyan somalis, we never got the chance to contribute untill recently. With Indians they are my kenyan brothers, went to schoool together, worked together. The point was we as kenyans started to be more accepting to each other the last 10 or 15 years.

  134. anon 6:25, you obviously didn't read my post well. Again, and let me make this loud clear. The piracy takes place ONLY in Puntland, specifically from a town called Eyl. This is the kind of disinformation that can easily be used by those with their own agenda so please stop perpetuating these myths. Al-Shabab control only large swathes of Southern Somalia and not even a metre in Puntland, which is an autonomous region, from where the former interim President Abdullahi Yusuf comes, and has its own government. In fact, the government in Pntland hates Al-Shabab like nothing. Thus, Al-Shabab have absolutely nothing to do with piracy.

You say Al-Shabab want to attack North Eastern. My question why would they want to do it? You mean like they want to take NEP? If so, can you please tell me how you can take a 126,902 km² area with AK-47s and technicals? If you mean they don't want to take it, then why would they want to attack? Just to cause havoc with no aim? Does that make sense then? I am not saying Al-Shabab will not attack NEP but I can only see them attacking as a retaliation to the government intervening in Somalia, exactly why the government should be neutral on this issue. Sheikh Dahir Aweys, who is an ally of Al-Shabab said clearly that they have no problem with Kenya as long as Kenya maintains its hitherto tested, tried and worked policy of neutrality.

  135. Well got that and we are also africans. Africa before the colonial era and partitioning was comprised of let's say Bantus, Nilotes, Cushites but the reality was most africans were either Farmers or Pastoralists and because of these lifestyle the physical appearances tend to differ according to the enviroment and lifestyle. Most pastoralist are slender and farmers more stocky. These myth that if you are real black or bantu you are more african is absurd, look at the bushmen in namibia are they not african, the samburu, the maasai. In west african they have the fulani people they look different from the Igbos. most of humanity originated from africa.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Anon 8.41 am, you have hit the nail on the head. Now Somalis are buying entire buildings and renting them to fellow somalis esp in Eastleigh. This is a phenomenon not seen by any tribe, including asians and europeans. There is this place they have created stalls next to Eastleigh High school, past Pumwani merternity. They were renting only to their fellow somalis. Its so easy to notice that some of these people are fresh from somalia since they dont even know a swahili word. Another example is Grogan where the land was 'grabbed' and sold to a somali through the islamic community. This led to bloody clashes on odeon roundabout btw locals and police. We know the somalis who grabbed this land. Its okay to buy land in kenya anyway and since our govt accepted and enforced this its okay. If you were in Nairobi during Grogan clashes you will notice that animosity is building up, now 100 families mainly kiuk and luo mechanics, have lost their livelyhood. I want to tell somalis that kenyans have noticed them and it will be to their benefit that they do things right. Its very unfortunate that we are now called baboons by people who we, more than any other nation, are trying so hard to help.

    2. Drop out of high school

    3. Women don't use sanitary pads

I agree Al shabaab CANT take NEP but WANT to take it as part of their greater somalia together with Ogaden IF AND WHEN THEY CAN. Hitler first WANTED to take over france but couldnt and waited until he COULD ie had the means. Al shabaab have said this themselves and its on record, you can google or visit the archives etc Constantly denying it and presenting pro al shabaab views and arguments confirm our earlier fears that an number of Kenyan Somalis are actually more loyal to Somalia than Kenya.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Somalis are at least 50 years behind the average Kenyan in terms of education, modernity, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  145. This talk of civilisation and knowing how to switch on lights is very naive really. Exactly what constitutes a civilisation is itself debatable. We were all farmers or pastoralists before the white man came. We Somalis were traditionally nomads looking after our camels and goats and some other African communities, were farmers.

Today, the world is a bit different so people adapt to it. Just because you know how to switch on a light or flash a toilet doesn't make you any better.

Sometimes I just imagine how life could have being for us if these white man didn't come and change us or worse still, took a pen and paper and decided by himself where we belong to. You know, I think life would have being tough without this internet or these lights but I also think, it would have being a far happier life, a more fulfilling one, being in the wilderness of nature looking after your camels or being in your shamba with your jembe.

You have now claimed to be our 'LIBERATORS' to use ilyas words. Now what do you do to a visitor who insults you or a brother who has his allegiance to an enemy?

    ReplyDelete
  148. anon 9:24. The problem is, how can we tell if someone wants something? You say Al-Shabab want it but how exactly can we tell it? By their words? They never said they want to to take NEP. By their actions? I am not aware of any so how exactly do you tell they want it? I think you believe Al-Shabab wants them because it somehow appeals to a believe inside of you, a believe they want to do it. 156. anon 9:24, I googled as you said and didn't find any reliable information that says Al-Shabab said thy will take NEP. I found the old rumours that they want to do it but as I said, it just stems from a believe inside that they want to rather than facts. The danger with these unsubstantiated facts is that those who are naive will take them as facts and in the most dangerous form, it can even lead to a decision from the government to revert back to the old ways and treat us as criminals and declare martial law in our province. You know it affects me more than it affects you so I belief it is my duty to debunk these myths before they lead to something bigger. These are all lies. A bit like Iraq had WMD.

As for my loyalty, I never said I am loyal to Al-Shabab. I don't follow any entity blindly. I support principles. If the government is wrong, I will not support it blindly. If Al-Shabab is wrong, I will not support them.

In my hood, they own most of the internet cafes, some phone shops, have a string of cafes, pound shops, and also do money transfer. The local Brits who are out of work, are not happy at all, and you can feel the tension on the street.

Also the cops, are harassing the Somali youth all the time.

They need licences to keep their cafes open all night, so they can chew miraa, and talk siasa ati. There is other stuff that goes on in those places, figure out for yourselves.

I live in a London neighbourhood, but it feels as if I am in Eastleigh. Dodging all the spit on the streets.

  180. Mohamed Abdi6/30/09, 1:26 PM

    Chris,

I'm a Kenyan born in Garisa and yes I am a Somali Kenyan. We have deep roots in Kenya. To be honest many tribes in Kenya came from different parts of Kenya. The Somalis from Somalia invested heavily and providing commendable service to all Kenyans. Used to be that I would have to to down and to East Asia shops and pay 10X more. Who really benefits from the goods sold in East Leigh - the Kenyan citizen of course. Would you rather have a China Town or Little India?

Who benefits when a 10+ story building is built - Kenya and its citizen.

I understand your apprehension about guns and crime but just like any other immigrant community they always receive the brunt of blame.

I challenge you to produce any evidence of any serious crime a Somali immigrant or refugee has committed.

Your article and thoughts are vestiges of the colonial divide and concur mentality and it is best left in the dust bins of history.

We are all Africans and we appreciate the fact that Kenya is hosting the largest displaced Somali community. The Somalis I talk to commend and deeply value the hospitality Kenyans have shown in time of plight. Somalis that found heaven in Kenya are productive members of community and contribute to the economy. It must be stated that Somalia is still country in turmoil and we still hear horrific violence in Somalia.

No one is born with propensity to commit crime and painting everyone with a broad brush with skimpy evidence or hearsay is easy and cheap. Your article is ill researched and intellectually deficient. You try very hard to hide your bigotry but it plain and clear. I have come across this types of articles many times and all they do is sew the seeds of distrust and suspicion amongst communities.

Kenya has just gone through a rough period it is time to tow the peace line, brother. Kenyans just like Somalis in Somalia are tired violence.
