Omar al-Bashir’s Spirit Thrives In Kenya

It has taken the rule of Sudan’s sitting president, Omar al-Bashir, six years to exterminate 300,000 fellow citizens. That’s about 137 victims per day…for six years. While not exactly Adolf Hitler proportions, his is still a pretty efficient killing machine, wouldn’t you say?

Next Wednesday, the ICC sits to determine whether the charges against Bashir warrant a date at The Hague. There’s a chance they may let him free to continue roaming the sand dunes of Sudan atop a camel chewing miraa under the desert sun. You see, France, Russia, Britain and China are willing to essentially pardon the president, provided he shows a serious commitment to the peace process. What exactly is a ‘serious commitment’ to the peace process? That’s a rhetorical question. The four out of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, with ‘special powers’ to suspend ICC charges, are afraid that violence will increase exponentially should a warrant for his arrest be issued. Proper English calls that blackmail. Add that to the fact that the ICC is broke and in fact considering the release of Charles Taylor. Yes folks, the guy whose war tactics included chopping off limps, ears and surgically removing the full breasts of lactating mothers by use of rusty farm implements….such as the ones transported to Western Province in Kenya government vehicles prior to our bungled elections. You know you are a failed state when a local tribunal is regarded as the worse proposition even with the current state of the ICC.

Well, it goes without saying that our local PEV superstar suspects are carefully analyzing each step Bashir takes with great interest. This is an important ‘case study’ that may set the precedent assuring our prime suspects peace of mind. The argument will always be the same; frog matching suspects to The Hague will ultimately provide their supporters the green light to embark on large scale mayhem. The formula is simple. If you are going to commit any level of genocide or war crimes against humanity, do so with the utmost ruthlessness. You not only achieve your devious aims but also leave behind a bloody track record of what your supporters are capable of repeating were you called to answer silly questions at The Hague. Is there anything or anyone who can prevent our prime suspects from pursuing similar blackmail tactics? To maintain peace, justice will have to be curtailed.

This should not mean anything to Kenyans; of course unless we consider the fact that our current coalition government was established on the same premise; that of peace over justice. These ‘principals’ did not hug, kiss and make merry to provide Kenyans a route to prosperity and good living. Rather, they did so to stop Kenyans from shedding blood. Kofi Annan’s primary job was to stop the bleeding; not to clean and heal the wound. If we wanted a clean government geared towards healing the nation, we should have chosen justice over peace. It’s funny we are now preoccupied in searching the source of our government’s incompetence yet the majority of us breathed a sigh of relief at the raising of Raila’s and Kibaki’s jointed palms. Honestly, what were we thinking? Depending on your political affiliation at the time, one of the two ‘principals’ was in fact a culprit. Yes folks, a culprit with whom we rewarded either the presidency or premiership based on the fear of continued mayhem as may be delivered by his supporters.

What follows is a bloated government held at ransom by itself. One defined by its record breaking inefficiency in service delivery but with very high expectations from the public. Combine the pre-election promises of both principals into one government policy and you will start to see what the public expects. Think of visions upon visions of the Kenya we want and you will understand why 70% percent of us would rather see the whole machinery close shop. Here we are today starving for lack of maize, forgetting sold hotels and expecting the very same scandalous people, who we knew are culprits from day one, to own up to political responsibility; whatever that means.

Listen, as afflicted Kenyans, we must continue seeking for accountability on a daily basis, however, please do not go on hunger strike expecting the status quo to change….as you will surely starve to death.

  1. Kalamari, if you don't like Kenya, just shove off to United States A where a Jaluo is the commander in Chief.

Kenya is not a place for whiners. What are you doing to change the country?

  2. Anon above. I think it’s patriotic to hate the current state of affairs. As far as what I’m doing to change the country, please remember that a revolution in the end is completed by the pen. What are you doing?

Only a thick skull like you would wish a president like raila. Raila represent f**ck up people who lack simple intelligence.

  6. Kalamari, there is one thing I admire about you, and that is your writing style. Very well. But, I am bit concerned about those jealous types like hypocrites called UXrlnc. I don't know how well they take your writing. If you don't know Uxrlnc is undergoing mid life crises with symptoms of extreme insecurity and jealousy to those he feels are better than him.
    Keep up !!

Damning evidence released on illegal killings
    BY BERNARD MOMANYI
Update 7 hours and 53 minutes ago

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 24 - The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) on Tuesday released damning evidence received from a police officer who claimed he was involved in the executions of 58 Mungiki suspects.

Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar Hassan released a video containing confessions of the police constable Bernard Kirinya, who served at the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SPCU), before he was shot dead in October last year.

In the footage, the slain officer recalls how they abducted several Mungiki leaders who went missing before their bodies were found dumped in forests, dams and mortuaries.

“The testimony of the whistle blower implicates the police leadership not only with the knowledge but actually sanctioning a campaign of abductions, illegal extortions, torture and cold-blooded murder of suspected criminals, and those alleged to be Mungiki members,” Mr Hassan said.

Notable cases in the late Kirinya’s confessions include the killing of Kimani Ruo, a Mungiki leader who was abducted outside the Nairobi Law Courts in June 2007, moments after he was acquitted of charges of being an adherent of the outlawed sect.

Others are the killing of the wife and driver of the jailed Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and two key Mungiki leaders Ndung’u Wagacha (Acting Chairman) and Naftali Irungu (National Treasurer).

The slain officer also confessed to having participated in the killing one of Kenya’s most wanted gangsters, Simon Matheri, who was gunned down by police in February 2007.

In what has shocked the top leadership in the police force, the slain Mr Kirinya names several senior police officers of having given them instructions to abduct and kill Mungiki suspects, some of whose bodies have still not been found.

“Having availed this information to the commission, the whistle blower informed the KNCHR that he was fearful of his security as the information was highly sensitive,” Mr Hassan said.

He was then placed on a witness protection programme both within Kenya and in a neighbouring country, according to the commission officials.

A few days after expressing fears for his life, Mr Hassan said that the commission received reports of the policeman’s shooting a few metres from his house in Hurlingham.

“Indeed, in the morning before his execution, the whistleblower was visited by a person driving a vehicle whose registration numbers were recorded by security guards,” he added.

Mr Hassan said that they later traced the registration numbers and established that the vehicle belonged to a police officer the slain cop had been working with at the Special Crimes Prevention Unit.

“Based on this, we hereby call for the resignation of the police chief Mohammed Hussein Ali to pave way for thorough investigations,” the KNCHR official said.

In a quick rejoinder, the Police Commissioner through his Spokesman Erick Kiraithe dismissed the human rights’ commission’s assertions as ‘mere propaganda’ and challenged them to substantiate their claims.

Mr Kiraithe also accused the commission of propagating a smear campaign to discredit the force at a time when a Special Rapporteur for Human Rights Professor Philip Alston is finalising his report on extra-judicial killings.

  12. this would be a step backwards

    http://nairobichronicle.wordpress.com/2009/02/22/government-fearful-of-rebellion-amidst-growing-despair/

A little noted event occurred on Nairobi streets during the weekend. For the first time since the 1982 coup attempt, paramilitary police wearing ammunition belts around their bodies patrolled the streets of Nairobi.

President Mwai Kibaki (right) surrounded by heavy security (left) at a government function in Nairobi.
The paramilitaries were drawn from the recently formed Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) of the Administration Police. RDU is the equivalent of the well-known General Service Unit (GSU).

The weekend’s show of might indicates alarm within government circles at widespread discontent among Kenya’s people. Senior security officers are worried that a tiny spark, especially in Nairobi, could result in massive protests that could topple the country’s present leadership.

The U.S. Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Kenya. American citizens in Kenya and those considering travel to Kenya should evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing threats from terrorism and the high rate of violent crime. This replaces the Travel Warning of August 22, 2008, to note increased security concerns in northeast Kenya near the Somali border.

  17. Brother Kalamari;

You never fail to surpass expectations in your masterly of the English language and above all in the way you give a fresh look at issues. We may differ on occassion, but you are one citizen I wouldn't mind sharing a cold beer with on a Friday evening in my favorite hang-out in Thika.

Now, you have a duty, as other bloggers have pointed out, to reach out to Phil and Taabu and show them the way. With Taabu, you will require monumental effort/patience because his outdated writing style requires an overhaul. Worse, he he needs to be checked into a re-education camp because his brain is stuck in a pre-historic swamp of tribal hatred. But let us not give up on him, he has great potential.

They like to use those tired lines "railaphobia", "raila hater".....
Why can't you accept Raila is god to the primitive people ONLY who can't tell what is right or wrong.
Affluent intelligent people would never look up to a dangerous socialist like Odinga.
