Political Rewards: Dare Rebels, Deride Projects

Kenyan politics never lacks sparks and spices. The heat in each political party seems to hitting a crescendo every weekend. The product is an interesting and potentially explosive mix ambition and tension. While ODM is trying to contain its so-called rebels, the iron lady is going bare knuckles with Uhuru and all the pretenders of the throne waiting in the wings for coronation. And the calculative Dr. Steve is waiting in the wings to bag the trophy from the resulting spoils of war.

Behind all present political scheming lurk ambitions cleverly clothed lest the players burn their political houses by acquiring the traitor tag. These smart politico are torn between the competing tenets of ambition and its unavoidable side effect tension. But that doesn’t stop Martha from going for the jugular and aiming at Jomo Junior’s soft under belly.

Poor Uhuru must be gritting his teeth anytime Karua takes the microphone. And she never disappoints just like she did again this weekend by reminding all and sundry that the era of propping political PROJECTS ended with the previous regime and would not work in the prevailing political situation.

The fluid Kenyan politics can sometime even confound the most experienced. Prof Kiarie Kinuthia is left torn between political pragmatism and respect. While Kajiado councilors would want George to do the necessary by throwing his hat into the ring, the good Topology professor knows better that THERE COMES A TIME! In Muthengi you find a mathematician who truly values time and knows the benefits derivable from perfect timing.

At stake in all these schemes is the Gema vote basket. Prof Kimya must be dutifully praying that Karua burns both her political bridges and fingers and the son of Jomo retreats to the warmth of shell Kanu. And abracadabra miracles galore once the political coast is clear.

Payback time
No politician will stake his or her neck without a price. And if you don’t give it them, they come out fighting for it. How smartly they do that may as well demarcate the difference between success and failure. One Bill is doing it and cannot wait any longer to play second fiddle to son of Moses in the Pentagon hierarchy business.

Now enter Martha and you witness Wangari's intestines boiling with rage and disappointment after being sidestepped and seeing the dividends from her LABOUR directed to UK's political bank account. The lady from Gichugu is firing from all cylinders and out fighting tooth and nail. Only time will tell her destiny with certainty.

The next four years promises interesting political times for Kenya with plenty of twists and turns. Pretending to predict or have a roadmap of how Kenya's political landscape will evolve is to be naive at best or merely engaging in an OBTUSE EGO trip at worse.

  1. First, any political "moves" right now should be treated as sideshows that have very little to do with what will happen in 2012. I love Bifwoli Wakoli, but I also know four years is a long time to be running for President. Many people have been in Jolly Bifwoli's position before.

About Raila Odinga daring rebels, I ask; Who really are the rebels? The Ababu group are not rebels, they are democrats expressing their opinions on certain specific issues. This is the same thing in ODMK-- The Kilonzo's are not rebelling against any known party position on anything. They are expressing their opinions and those of their constituents, the people who elected them. When did the ODM decision making organs ever sit and decide no party MP should support the formation of an opposition caucus in parliament? Does any organ even have the power to do so? What they have in ODM are not rebels and conformists, no. They are proponents of two different positions on a number of issues. One of those positions is championed by people like Ababu and Ruto and the other is championed by Raila Odinga, Oburu Oginga, Jakoyo Midiwo and others. Anybody in the 21st century talking of "disciplining" a member of Parliament for refusing to be another's rubber-stamp should be looked in the eye and called a dictator.

Martha Karua has lately been talking of projects. Who are those projects? Does she really expect Kibaki to be so dumb as not to understand that any open bias for Uhuru would result in Saitoti and Kalonzo leading a revolt? It looks to me like she is the one who was expecting a corronation and when none was forthcoming she became restless. Not that there is anything wrong with her running for President (She should be encouraged to do so), but she has been throwing barbs at UK at every opportunity calling him a project. If UK is running for President, he is not running against Martha. With or without Kibaki's support, she cannot beat him in any constituency besides Gichugu. If she is looking for someone to fight she should not look further than Bifwoli who, like her, is a declared candidate!

That is the common thread running throgh the veins of all these wannables. Yes democracy you claim it to be and that is true on paper. But these folks are naive either and they know when to sulk. Kiema would not be the DEMOCRAT if he was in cabinet, or would he?

As for Martha she is definitely throwing political tantrums and you don't have kind words for her for obvious reasons. UK and Kiarie are in tight spot. 4 years is a lifetime is politics and Kibaki must be either enjoying the show or going sleepless depending on his mission.

  3. Taabu, you know what? I know Kiema personally and I love him alot. He attended my graduation and I will forever be grateful for one BIG thing he helped me with a few years ago. Now, do I agree with his politics? No, I dont. I do not agree with the political positions he has taken lately, but that is what democracy should be about. I also know that he has not taken those positions because of any fundamental beliefs he has. I know it is all about his missing out on the cabinet, BUT that is not the question. The question should be; Is he democratically entitled to whatever position he likes without being policed by anyone? Without being called a traitor? A rebel? I believe so. Even those people he supposedly should be loyal (sorry, sycophantic) to have also 'betrayed" or "rebelled against" someone in their political lives. They should not act like policemen this time round. And on the same measure, Ababu, Ruto, Charles, Kuttuny and the rest shouldn't be policed either! They have constituents and it is ONLY those constituents they are answerable to.

I dont know what you mean when you say I do not have kind words for Martha. As far as I am concerned, she has had a history of saying the truth even when people don't like it. I am not taking that away from her. What baffles me is her obsession with UK. She keeps repeating some old lines that UK has a sense of entitlement to the Presidency. This is the kind of reverse psychology that wont work--She is telling people that UK should not hinge his ambitions on his being a President's son while at the same time disqualifying him on that very same basis. And the truth, Taabu, is that Martha on her own cannot beat UK on his own. Invoking the name of the President in your frustrations is surely not the way to go. She can assign blame all she wants, but that wont change a damn thing.

Taabu, this is what should happen; The PNU should accord all those interested in its ticket a fair plattform to convince people why they should be the torch bearer. Martha knows how big of an outsider she is in this game and that's why she is engaging in attacks that seem personal. She has chosen to conduct her business in NARC Kenya and that's her choice. Since Uhuru has not been declared the PNU candidate and since he hasnt even said he is running, the most honourable thing for her would be to lay him off.

Now with those remarks, we all love Joe cole, dont we?

  4. Vikii,
What you call side shows, I call reality in Kenyan politics.

The so called rebels maybe exercising their democratic rights but the larger issue with ODM and even PNU stems from the fact that they are not parties but rather conduits used to achieve certain ends be it the constitutional referendum or getting into state house. You can not use an oil pipeline to distribute water. These parties usually do not have properly spelt out articles of association and agenda. Therefore, some months down the road and there is dissention and confusion about where the party is headed.

  5. In addition, if I were Raila, I would leave the dream of being president and concentrate on being prime minister. I say this for 2 reasons;

ODM needs to stand for something more. A movement usually is ongoing. It does not end and in many cases it is generational. By this I mean that it's concepts and tenets are passed on and built upon. Raila has an oppotunity to plant the seed and also uphold the office of the PM as a highly respectable office. He should concentrate on spreading the gospel according to ODM. If you ask many folks what the core beliefs of ODM are, I bet you they don't know.

Secondly, it is high time that others are allowed to lead. As far as I know, the PM office has not term limits. Raila will have enough powers to push his agenda even if he is not in state house. Dessenters should be allowed to state their case and if they want to join the Grand Opposition then they should allowed to leave in peace. It is now pretty evident to anyone that if you can coalesce around a common problem, then you can form a GK. Am not yet clear on what party Kibaki rode into power as mandated by law. So cartels are likely to emerge with a view of getting into power. It will take a bigger person with vision to build a strong political party with staying power for the future.

Otherwise, we are likely to see a lot of new parties with short shelf life. I pity the kenyan student who has to learn all these names in civic education. Time was when knowing KANU and KADU was enough!

These are attempts to CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION through the back door and steal back executive powers handed to the Prime Minister.

This is Kalonzo Musyoka & Co (his new supporters like Kiraitu Murungi) trying to meddle in the GCG arrangement through Muthaura.

    Look at the timing.

New appointments are just about to be made.

Kalonzo wants to have a say in Diplomatic appointments to reward his hungry patronage pool that has been waiting since January.

    When Muthaura emphasizes to the PM that;

"the Vice-President is the principal assistant to the President"

    you can smell mischief.

When Muthaura, a simple administrator of the civil service, writes condescending MEMOS with 'clarifications' and 'instructions' to the Prime Minister - granted executive powers by the constitution to SUPERVISE & COORDINATE the same government, then you can SEE & FEEL DIRECT MISCHIEF.

The constitution appoints ONLY ONE coordinator and supervisor of government and that is the Prime Minister.

These silly memos reflect straight out insurbordination by a junior Muthaura who may be harbouring some false sense of ENTITLEMENT and somehow feels PROTECTED against any mischief.

These are the very 'business as usual' agents who are playing and joking with Kenya's relative peace and stability.

We just heard the other day, their other mouthpiece Linturi, proposing to INCREASE the age for RETIREMENT of CIVIL SERVANTS like Muthaura, while LIMITING THE AGE for running for the presidency.

When I say some folks are temporarily blinded by a false sense of entitlement to power, then you can see their deeds.

Ask this simple question. Why is Muthaura 'instructing' the PM and Coalition Ministers (read ODM Ministers) that the running of ministries, including hiring and firing functions, lies in the hands of Permanent Secretaries, just when major hirings and firings are in the OFFING?

    THIS IS A PREEMTPIVE STRIKE.

It seems that after the consultations between the PM and president on new appointments and firings, that list is being replaced.

That list is being scavenged upon even before it is released, by Muthaura and whoever he calls the President's "prinicipal assistant". Who cares, Kibaki shares executive power with the Prime Minister who also has two principal assistants.

Kibaki needs to wake up firmly, pull out the big stick and whip the behinds of his troublesome puppets like Muthaura and Kalonzo. I think we need peace to progress forward.

NAIROBI, September 7 - Debate over the formation of a grand opposition in Parliament resurfaced on Sunday after Justice Minister Martha Karua stated that she was for the idea, just as Prime Minister Raila Odinga spoke of the contrary.

The Minister, who spoke in Kisii, threw her weight behind the motion that she had opposed in its conception.

“Were it not for the opposition, Kenyans would still be suffering under the single party rule,” said Karua, during a workshop for officials of Narc Kenya in Kisii

  8. kenyans are not foolish as Martha Karua and her chain of bought puppies like ababu and jirongo and the like of other bought goons in ODM.. I mean read the daily nation gutter kikuyu press - read between the lines of their reporting agenda. Martha Karua and her team of Judases are there in the fore front..

but kenyans wait a minute- Martha Karua is just a front being used to destabilize ODM by showing that she is fighting Uhuru please don't be fooled.. it all ends up by them destabilizing odm and trying to gain the Kikuyu vote.. look at the plans... add more constituencies in central province(Uhuru is shouting.. and followed right behind by martha Karua she screams from Kisii saying she supports the grand coalition..

can't kenyans see by Martha Karua and kikuyu factor supporting and voting for the grand opposition in parliament is a direct way of destabilizing ODM??
Have kenyans forgotten why we removed most of the PNU MP's in Rift Valley and other parts of kenyans except for central from parliament in the last elections??
Kwani Karua and the fully bribed Ababu think kenyan's are fools??
game on The can scream all they want..grand opposition members I dare them 100% most of them won't see the light of day in the next elections..

On the grand Kenyans are furious the talk all over is how can this stoogies wakina ababu who can afford to fly all over the kenya in helicopters spewing hate be allowed in the 10th parliament while kenyans are starving and can't even afford one meal??

I doubt... Let this Karua Bought fools enjoy their last supper come 2012 or earlier they will be nowhere in parliament.. it is not age that is the issue?? it is corrupt individuals who are being paid big salaries to hip hop around the country doing nothing but licking the likes of Karua's ass and to destabilize their own party just for greed and selfish reasons

I say ODM throw the likes of ababu out.. he is not worth it- let him spew his dirt in Martha Karua party I'm sure Karua will welcome him with hugs since she has already paid him big sums of money..

  9. First, I'd like to recognize the right of everyone to speech. About ODM, I liked the way Raila put it; "If anyone has anything, let him say it here (Naivasha) and not talk to the press". Now that's a challenge. If the Isaac Ruttos and Namwambas of this world are men enough, let them stand up and say whatever they have. What is all this noise for. Si waseme kenye wanataka wapewe!

I think the RVP MPs are supporting anything against Raila to blackmail him. That's why they walk from place to place talking this and that about Raila. But I want to ask; "If Raila were to start a campaign against these MPs, would they survive?". I guess their constituents would be baying for their blood! So guys, relax. Raila will sort out the mess in ODM. I believe Ababu's idea was great at first. But when the likes of Jirongo and Isaac Rutto joined in, everything went hayway.

I won't say whether to call the Ababu group as "Rebels". I think they are just elements, disgruntled elements. But what's killing them is their source of disgrunt. That's why as someone put it, once the dust settles, they will not know what had hit them.

By the way, Mudavadi is my choice for 2012. Raila akae kando, abaki PM.

Right now if you give Isaac Ruto a flag......You just wont know what hit him he will be an overnight sycophant...Trust me on that one (Rebels are supposed to have ideologies and principles) I dont see any in Jirongo and Ruto they just have nothing that they believe in......And if they have they were already overtaken by events.Ababu aand the Kilonzo maybe (and now that he has also become an elder...Wacha tu) The finishing line is far off. Watch the space

The fuuniest statement i have heard this year is that Uhurur is supporting the formation of a grand opposition....LOL, i thought he is the one who killed the opposition in the last parliament....Some of these guys just need to give us a break ama?
Is there anything that UK can stand an tell us that he achieved when he was the leader of opposition...LOL

I am just trying to imagine Kenya with....

  15. Stop exaggerating in a spirited attempt to give Karua more political clout than she actually has. If she indeed had any clout, why are politicians from her backyard fleeing her Narc-k party for PNU, where Uhuru, her needlessly chosen nemesis, DOES have clout? She has chosen a fight she cannot win.
Whether she likes it or not, most younger GEMA have settled on Uhuru as their next political leader after Kibaki and there is nothing she can do about it, except to come hat in hand and beg and grovel for forgiveness if she wants to salvage her damaged political career.
Oh, and Uhuru was not and is not waiting to be anointed by Kibaki, he has already naturally assumed leadership without waiting for it to be bestowed on him. Only the Karuas and Taabus of this world still think that there is going to be a coronation. There wont be one. The Baton was handed over while you were asleep. Haha.

    ReplyDelete
  16. How has Uhuru "naturally" assumed leadership of the GEMA? Because he is a Kenyatta? This myth of natural leadership must be blasted off to hell where it belongs.

Just this past weekend GEMA's Rift Valley diaspora was breathing something very different--their votes are subject to negotiation and will not fall "naturally" under the purview of mainstream GEMA leadership. This was said in a rally where Uhuru was present--or may have walked out?

Moreover, a new GEMA youth movement meeting several weeks back did not seem to have mentioned Uhuru as their leader--I have tried digging up the newspaper article without success. If anyone can I'd appreciate the link being placed here so I can verify this.

Lastly, if Uhuru was the natural leader, why did the Mungiki youth seek audience with the Bondo Bumpkin just about the time he was being sworn in? Would Uhuru not have been the "natural" choice then? As deputy PM?

For whatever reasons, the Kiambu Mafia (for want of a better term) believe that the sun rises and sets in their asses. I have no problem with that. I just do not believe that the Chania river and the Kenyatta name should be used to delineate the boundaries of leadership in Kenya. Let the Overfed Baby, like others around him, do the legwork to get him into the top position, if he so seeks.

But this story below from today's Standard is not a laughing matter and just goes to show why naive Kenyans keep electing the same stupid politicians. Get your handkerchief ready and prepare to weep. We have millions of miles to go as a country......

"As the world marks the World Literacy Day today, alarming statistics on adult literacy survey Kenya National Adult Literacy Survey (KNALS) indicates that more than eight million adults and youth are illiterate.

According to the KNALS report, only 75.5 per cent and 68.6 per cent of males and females are able to read and write in each of the eight provinces.

The survey further indicates that only 29.6 per cent of Kenya’s population has attained desired literacy competency compared to 61.5 per cent attaining minimum mastery level..."

  19. Ngai fafa, our Obama has now been overtaken in the polls by John McCain. Wapi Wakamba na uchawi.....

LBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) - Republican John McCain heads into the final stretch of the U.S. presidential campaign with a 4-point lead over Democrat Barack Obama, a USA Today/Gallup poll released on Sunday showed.

The lead was McCain's biggest since January and a turnaround from a USA Today poll taken just before last week's Republican Party convention opened, when the veteran Arizona senator trailed Obama by 7 percentage points.

The new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, showed McCain leading Obama, a first-term senator from Illinois, by 50 percent to 46 percent among registered voters with less than two months before the November 4 election.

The poll of 1,022 adults had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 points.

USA Today said McCain got a significant boost from the Republican convention and the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. McCain also narrowed Obama's wide advantage on handling the economy, the top issue in the campaign, the newspaper said.

McCain said in an interview aired on Sunday he would bring Democrats into his Cabinet and administration as part of his attempt to change the political atmosphere in Washington.

"I don't know how many but I can tell you, with all due respect to previous administrations, it is not going to be a single, 'Well, we have a Democrat now,"' McCain said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

  20. Very good. And what do these literacy rates compare to? Those of rats and mice? To Somalia, DRC, Tanzania? Or to prior years in Kenya? Without trends and targets, these figures say very little. But let those who wish to weep go ahead and do so. It is cathartic or so am told.
    Over and out.

  21. B-carotene, you have totally misunderstood my use of the term naturally. I did not use it in the context of inheritance, which is how you understood it, but in the context that there is an inter-generational leadership vacuum in GEMA and Uhuru simply assumed it. What is wrong with that? Or you think because he is the son of a former President and wealthy he has no right to leadership? Or maybe you think he should pay for the sins of his father, which is utter rubbish of course?
Leadership comes from the people, and anybody who believes they have more clout than Uhuru in GEMA land are free to challenge him. So far, most Central MPs seem to be gravitating around him, NOT Karua or even Saitoti. Why?
Uhuru has never pretended that he deserves leadership because he is a Kenyatta and i challenge you to prove otherwise. He has simply laid claim to that leadership and anybody is free to challenge him to it when the PNU elections are called. Otherwise they can form their own political vehicles like Karua has, challenge him and win.

Since when did Mungiki youth represent the mainstream thinking of Kikuyu youth? Do you live in Kenya? For your info, Mungiki are increasingly seen as extortionist gangsters and just a few months ago, some of them were lynched by touts and had their houses burnt at Kabati near Murang'a town for their exploitative gangsterism. Who then between touts and extortionist Mungiki gangs represents the aspirations, trials and tribulations of Kikuyu and GEMA youth in general other than matatu touts? Get real. Mungiki claim to represent oppressed GEMA youth but these are the same people who they terrorize, not the middle class or the rich.

Where do you get the absurd idea that this is a Kiambu Mafia conspiracy? Where is your evidence?

If you truly believe that the GEMA RV MPs will cut-off their Central Kenya umbilical cord to strike a political deal on their own with the Kalenjin, then i feel sorry for you in your naivete. If the MPs are men enough, let them do so. We will see how the Kalenjin treat them, when they first demand that the GEMA diaspora in the RV give up their land in exchange for peace and a political deal.

  23. Kimi:
Great you clarified your meaning of natural and my apologies for misunderstanding you.

Perhaps Martha is doing what Uhuru is doing in the wake of a GEMA leadership vacuum now that Emilio is walking out the door. What puzzles me is WHY the people you mention would gravitate towards Uhuru and not Martha. How has Uhuru laid claim to leadership (that Martha has not) that has led people to gravitate towards him?Any specific reason for that? Is it because he's DPM?

Re the GEMA diaspora I am going by what the GEMA RV MPs said themselves and which is on record. More importantly, HOW has the umbilical tie to the GEMA motherland helped them when many of them still reside in IDP camps right now and are periodically subject to Kalenjin misadventures and murder? Perhaps and I say, PERHAPS a SMARTER move would be to negotiate with their neighbors in the RV. And maybe that's one of the things our Overfed Baby can help out with (he even recently went touring the IDP camps), if he's man enough, to borrow of your very own disquieting language. Failure to that, then you Kimi can help lead discussions on how the GEMA diaspora can know lasting peace short of relocating them elsewhere.

On to your other point. Good you called me out on the Mungiki--guess they were seeking out another thug to help them out, who responded rather aptly. So let's scratch that.

Sawa, I also retract invoking the term Kiambu Mafia--that was a tad extreme.

My sense is that there are several very pragmatic reasons for justifying and defending the Overfed Baby's suitability and in the extreme, his 'claim' to GEMA leadership on his own right, but you Kimi have done very little to help move that along. Indeed, just because a power vacuum exists does not (should not) preclude the interrogation of whosoever rises up to fill it. I somehow get the impression that Martha's presence serves as a threat? For if it were not, there would be no justification for such heated objections to her candidacy. Hmmmm?

If my advocating for GEMA unity in the face of unrelenting aggression from ODM barbarians is espousing GEMA hegemony, then so be it, and i make no apologies. You have obviously swallowed the ODM ideological lie that GEMA people should never be heard, only seen. Well, you will wait till you catch up with Methuselah before that happens.

    ReplyDelete
  27. B-carotene, thanks for your thoughtful response.
As a matter of fact, you are mostly correct on all your points, except that you seem to have failed to recognise one clear fact: the GEMA community is and has been under siege for the last fifteen years, without adequately responding to what is and has been an obviously well calculated and malevolent conspiracy to exterminate them, and which reached critical mass with the recent PLANNED bloodletting and brazen attempt at ethnic cleansing in the RV. There is no immediate reason to believe that it can never happen again or that the perps do not have even worse plans.
In this context, it is imperative for the GEMA to be one solid united block around a readily recognisable symbol like Uhuru. If Martha Karua feels that she can unite GEMA people, then by all means let her try, but not at the risk and expense of dividing the people in the name of democracy. Karua shouting about democracy in dangerous times is therefore foolish and naive, especially so soon after the anarchic chaos early this year.
It is also equally dangerous for the GEMA diaspora in RV to talk of cutting off ties with their kin in Central Kenya. They will be like a rudderless ship in RV waters. To talk of negotiating a deal with the Kalenjin from a position of weakness is not very wise now, is it?
GEMA politicians may have their own secret agendas in opposing Karua, but the ordinary GEMA person in the street merely sees her as an indisciplined spoiler in the quest for a solid united block.

Put that way, I have little option but to agree. Dawa ya moto ni moto. Like a regular pollyanna just wish that people would 'just get along,' in spite of all the politics and politicians.

  29. Kimi,
You know as I do that you can do better than that. Why become so RABID and give your rationale leave. Common man, you can still stand and stop stooping that low. BTW never assume anything lest you are unwittingly embracing embrassment. How do you know who is supporting what and never imagine that you can dicipher one's political take/taste/origin by what is posted here. Write from the head and leave the heart warm, won't you?

  30. Taabu, of course i can do better than that, much much better indeed, if the reality were different. I have demonstrated that here many times.
Unfortunately, the reality is that Kenyan politics is practiced from tribal platforms, in spite of numerous pretenses to the contrary, even by yourself. In this context, Kenya is divided between PNU and its core GEMA supporters, the ODM-K and its Kamba base, and ODM with its core Luo, Luhya and Kalenjin support. Even Kajwang said so in the Sunday Standard, that ODM cannot afford to have the Kalenjin out as they form one of its three pillars. So why pretend to address political issues from a self righteous, pretentiously colour blind and hypocritical democratic platform couched in high sounding Aristotlian rhetoric, when we all know the reality is different? It is not just laughable, but avoids dealing with the issue directly AS IT IS.

  31. Kimi,
I agree and won't take anything from you bro. But what makes you stand from a crowd is your input to change the course. Or are you resigned to the rot? Just curious you know. Again no assumptions like you make on pretense, you cannot be so sure, ama?
