PM Raila Tops Kibaki, Parliament in Gallup Poll

The latest GALLUP POLL released this afternoon shows a huge majority of Kenyans rate Prime Minister Raila Odinga far much ahead of President Mwai Kibaki in approval of their leadership. The same poll indicates Raila to be much more popular than Kibaki.

Prime Minister received an approval rating of 85%, while President Kibaki rated at 63%, Parliament at 67% and the Grand Coalition Cabinet at 63%.

Not surprisingly, the U.S.-based pollster's interview with 2,200 people across Kenya's eight provinces showed that a whopping 70% believe that the last December 2007 presidential vote was "dishonest". 57% believe Raila Odinga won the presidency while only 25% think Kibaki was the victor.

Robert Tortora, Gallup’s Chief Methodologist and Regional Research Director for sub-Saharan Africa operations released the report in Nairobi this afternoon. The poll was conducted in June/July this year.

  4. To be fair to Kibaki, unless extremely efficient and 'likable' like ..apparently the late Mwanawasa, most outgoing incumbent presidents register low in polls. I think Bush is in the low thirties.

For all intends and purposes, Kibaki is history. This man should not be disturbed as he writes his memoirs in the State House library. Although he appears engrossed in succession politics, this chaps main, absolute and only concern is truly his soon to be activated pension plan. Here we are wondering about percentages while Kibaki is busy maneuvering and positioning himself to ensure he gets about three kikuyu limo drivers, four maasai watchmen, five kamba shamba boys and six luhya cooks paid for by the Kenyan taxpayer for the rest of his life. Let us not waste time polling this jamaa.

As far as who actually won, Gallup is doing us a harm by poking at healing wounds. The truth is that it doesn't matter. Even as we know Kibaki stole, he is not going to be in the race in 2012….. and Kenyans do not have the fortitude to remove him today. So why bother?

While at it, Kumekucha, when are you going to discover the fly-by-night charity organizations that Pauline formed to channel her wifely salary?

read this excerpt from the dailies:

.......Manyatta MP Emilio Kathuri echoed Mureithi’s sentiments, adding the earlier fears were misplaced and executive powers should be shared.

Mr Kathuri said the PM’s office under Langata MP Mr Raila Odinga has soberly handled issues affecting the people.

"The mandate of the PM is clear and he has been carrying out his duties diligently," said Kathuri. "The impression that there would be two centres of power was based on a phobia for the unknown and I think Raila has demystified certain notions," he added.

    Misplaced doubts

Kathuri said Raila had won the hearts of many in the way he has handled national issues.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So Raila has the approval of 85%(!) of Kenyans. Wow! Unfortunately, we are told that the rating is based on leadership, but what is the leadership criterion? What has he actually accomplished better than Kibaki as a leader? Is it based on his working hard? Working hard doing what? WHAT has Raila actually achieved, if anything? Does being in the headlines daily constitute leadership or working hard? I can tell you that all those Raila fans gloating here cannot pinpoint a single accomplishment of Raila's since he joined the Govt. I challenge them to do so.
The poll is based on misguided methodologies that do not take into account how ill-informed Kenyans are. Most Kenyans get their info from the mainstream media, and all serious Kenyans know how ignorant, ill-informed and cynical Kenya's newspapers and radio stations really are. If you want to get real info, read the Indian Ocean Newsletter or Africa Confidential.

Kimi and the rest give yourself a self delusional break, it can't be that hard to think logically.

One very important archivemant by RAO since he joined governmet is that he has not suddenly become rich.....that is unusual by kenyan standards.....the fact that he can poke his nose into anyones business has helped reduce the nonsense in gava....That his job to be a prefect of sorts.....like a prefect your responsibilty is not for the students to pass their exams but to make sure they don't interfere with others business.

RAO is popular with kenyans and you would rather insult kenyans, chief its a democracy,. . . .its a painful thing buts growing up has never been easy.

  26. What is all this hullabaloo all about. I think President Kibaki has done quiet well. 63 % for an incumbent is good. After all most people who voted for President Kibaki have accomodated the idea of premiership and power sharing and thus approve of Raila. No wonder the approval of Kibaki and the GNU government is the same percentage - 63%. Meaning those who ticked the box (on the poll sheet) approving Kibaki also ticked on the box approving the GNU government ( and consequently also ticked the Box to approve Raila). On the other hand most ODM supporters are still bitter of the "stolen election" which they are still claiming and less likely to approve Kibaki. By the way the poll was not a popularity contest but sight to have approval ratings.

Jeff, before I answer you, I do not understand why barbs are being thrown my way yet I am just doing the job of a messenger. All the local and international media have reported the same thing as I have published on this blog, does it mean they are also 'ejaculating' or 'being childish'?

Again Jeff, do we really understand the significance of such polls in society like ours? According to GALLUP, which has built its 70-odd-years reputation on delivering relevant, timely, and visionary research on what people around the world think and feel, their firm assist leaders to identify and monitor behavioral economic indicators, for eg.better planning and resource allocation!

Jeff, I see you conveniently avoided to comment on what Kenyans think about the 'stolen election' or that thaey do not consider constitutional reforms a priority but rather want the unworkable Kibakinomics that has brought hyper-inflation tamed ASAP. That is what Kenyans are saying, not me.

You also fail to acknowledge that RAO is not just rating above the President as an individual he is also approval rating is above the institution that is parliament (legislature in constitutional lingo) and also above the entire grand coalition government. Makes me wonder, what would happen to this country if RAO were to lead his ODM out of government?? Really, we need to thank this guy for agreeing to work with the very person who robbed him of his presidential medal.

To answer you Jeff... yes its like comparing the board chairman and the MD. Who between RAO and Kibaki is the MD and who is the chairman? You need to look at their portfolios to get the answer.

Who is holding the so called executive powers? Who is both head of government and head of state? Who is the president's principal assistant? Who is commander in chief of the armed forces? Who holds the prerogative to appoint the VP and ministers or ambassadors and MDs of state corporations?

One cannot have all these constitutional powers, whether as an executive chairman or CEO or MD, and still be rated a whole 22 points behind a mere Head of Department, can they JEFF?

Danny above has given you the reason why rao tops kibs. Read it and stop your usual idiotic nonsense.

  32. Phil,

I have no doubt that Gallup is a respected pollster out there, if the experience you quote is anything to go by. But this does not mean they cannot make mistakes. Like this poll. It is premised on the wrong assumption, that Raila and Kibaki are running different arms of government, while in actual sence they are part of the same GCG. Polling the performance of the two gentlemen against each other, whichever results you get is ridiculous.

Even without using the analogy of a company, Raila's authority, as govt supervisor, extends to all arms of govt, only that his authority is delegated by the president. In this sense Raila's performance is equivalent to the general rating of the whole government's performance.

The only credible conclusion we can therefore draw is that 85% of kenyans are happy with Kibaki govt's performance under Raila's supervision, and not Raila as an individual. (How would another person in that position have performed,?) Again 63% are happy with Kibaki's govt performance, including appointment of Raila as PM. Since Raila is, as you put it, a mere department head, then his performance can only be rated against other department heads such as VP, DPMs, Ministers, etc and not with the Board Chairman, the president, who appoints and delegates duties to all of them.

As to the election outcome, this is water under the bridge. Whoever is president, is the president. Let us move on. The two gentlemen agree with this conclusion. That is why we should not waste our time belabouring this issue. Even judge Kriegler has said as much!

Can the govt collapse if Raila were to walk out? Nope. Remember Kibaki was ready to form a govt on his own, before ODM violently interupted. If he does, his goose is cooked. Somebody else will be appointed PM, or the post scrapped altogether. He would have started his journey to political irrelevance.

  33. Most peopel talking about kibakis performance always quote the 6% rabbit in the hat gdp growth....just to prove how that is quackish nonsense take a brisk walk in the south westerly direction of africa to a country called Angola, that country has had an official 24% gdp growth for the past 3yrs...except the ordinary Angolan on the street would disagree, the roads and infrustructure are worse than kenya and they have oil to boot.....

The main reason kibs got elected the first time was to usher in a new political dispensation as embodied in the bomas draft and he failed that.....leave economic indcators alone people need to feel enfranchised that he failed in the stolen election,......

.putting bread on the table, we have always done without the gava infact inspite of gava interferance, we have educated our children with all the difficulties and found jobs abroad when gava could not provide inspite of making it difficult to obtain passports.

All we wanted was for him to remove the obstacles and let us do the rest.....He goes a creates more by intstitutionalising tribalism and fathering cronism so the guy failed, failed failed. The support he is getting is all based on tribalism frm the people who bebefitted or hopped to benefit frm it.....

  34. Jeff unless you came in yesterday from mars and was not proper briefed....neither kibaki nor ROA apointed the other so you conclusion that a vote on one is a vote on the other is wrong. These guys AGREED to work with each other and we all know that had one tried to impose, there would be no kenya today, so kibs did not appoint RAO and niether did RAO appoint kibs. Approval ratings sir has nothing to do with running for office otherwise they would only show up pre-election time so don't try mix guys up. Its not even a indicator of who should be the nxt president its like top ten list of music only this time its, of who is currently jazzing wanaanchi at his current job. english ni shida.

The truth will never rot. It will always remain the truth. The majority of Kenyans Know that the elections of December '07 were STOLEN BY KIBAKI and that RAILA IS A FAR SUPERIOR LEADER when compared to Kibaki the thief and mediocre, incompetent and fraudulent imposter so called president.

Its good to know that 57% believe that Raila won but it does not help us now. At any rate Raila will emjoy close to fiteen years at the helm if he wins the next election. Im mean 5 now and ten then. Kibaki has an intention of doing a MOI he wants uhuru to succed him. I think that everybody sees some weakness in Uhuru and are intending to use him. The man is a useless chap.
