Selling Kenya to Terrorists for 9 Pieces of Silver

It is 10 years since that dark Friday when death and destruction landed on Kenya. Kenya was devastated by terrorists who brought their trail of destruction to our shores. Since then Kenya has never been the same again. But what have we learned as a country since that fateful Friday?
What a paradox that while many maimed Kenyans are still trying to come to terms with their shuttered lives, the mastermind of that heinous act one Fazul Mohamed from Comoros is right within our borders possibly planning an anniversary to obliterate Kenya. Fazul is around shopping for a doctor at the right price to attend to his ailing kidneys. And for the fifth time in as many years he has escaped the police dragnet.

Fazul’s operation since 1998 has proved that in Kenya everything has a price and nothing is sacrosanct. Forget about the hollow chorus of najivunia kuwa Mkenya which was a visionary slogan manufactured by sightless scoundrels principally for political expediency. Here we have one fugitive with the police force at his beck and call and at the right price he is tipped off of an impending raid leaving all his belongings but escaping with his most murderous soul.

Deception and fraud is our forte both at individual and institution level. The corrupt policeman doesn’t a care in the wilderness what is actions in tipping Fazul portents for a whole country. By the way, why would he care when doing so would make him rich and respectable Kenyan? It has been said that eradicating corruption starts with taking personal responsibility towards the same. But where would one get the motivation in matters he has no control over and will the potential to decimate him and others around him?

Damn the consequences
Two wrong never made a right and past ruinous governments is no justification to outdo those grand frauds. While Kibaki regime is having auctioning Kenya though a myriad cleverly crafted avenues like government-to-government Grand Regency sale, individual Kenyans will do anything within their powers to pursue our national pastime of primitive wealth accumulation. The ingenious fraudsters seldom fail to craft high-sounding programs like v2030 which are designed to keep Kenyans busy mauling over abstracts as the looting spree acquires breakneck speed.

Our is a culture singularly defined by the vices of deception and fraud only succeeds in mutating to a monster that ends up eating herself. By working hard, we are unwittingly nourishing terrorists who will help us achieve the ultimate objective of obliteration faster. Here have Fazul from Comoros possessing two Kenyan passports with the new one acquired in February 2008 at the height of near-meltdown in the post-election violence. No wonder we lost the UK visa privilege in 1997 when we chose to sell our birthright to Somalis at the right price. Well, we have been propping skunks under the guise of fraudulent industriousness and we have to live with the resulting stench. No amount of deodorizing will ameliorate sickening smell as we steadily and surely hurtle towards self-destruction on our own and aiding others to accelerate it.

  2. Now, did Kajwang backdate the issuance of the passport to this thug? How did he even get a kenyan pp and where were all these 'experts' who have been giving press conferences left right back and front?

When I applied for a pp, I remember getting a surprise visit from a CID officer who was interested in knowing why I wanted to travel out of kenya etc.

The useless idiots harass ordinary folks while terrorists boss us around. Now that they have acquired a hideout in GR we are in deeper trouble.

  3. i believe the police are not entirely to blame. you do not expect a force of less than a million guys to know everything about 35 million fellows, who they host and the rest.the force is overstreched with domestic problems to be able to counter terrorist networks around. by the way,who said fugitives need a genuine pass? even in developed countries like the US, with all the phone taps and technology, they have alqaeda rings and terrorists. so its fool hardy to expect our ill equiped force to do miracles. let encourage them and criticize them softly. after all, we have corrupt elements all over not just in the force.

  4. Fazul is an innocent man who was captured and killed by anti-terror squads. He completely disapeared off the face of the earth because he was killed and his body parts were completely destroyed. There was no one to blame for the embassy bombings so they chose a dead man, "Fazul" to be the face of al qaeda in East Africa.

The US embassy was bombed by the Americans themselves so as to create fear and stop the spread of islam

  7. I think terrorism is a problem bigger than we think.

I repeat; Our anger should be directed to the bullying antics of the world's biggest brother, the United States of America. Phil believes terrorism in East Africa is bred, nourished and harboured by one Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (He has amazing abilities, doesn't he?). And Phil is entitled to that view.

Fazul, if that is the name of the guy, is a puppet--the type you should ignore. There will always be little Fazuls cropping up(in every country, mark you) if the United States doesn't change its attitude as far as global politics goes and I think that is a good enough reason for us to hope for the election of Barack Obama. You will not get away with bossying people around, you will not get away with lording it over folks. The United States, the world's biggest terror nation, will have to change their approach to diplomacy. Radical islamism is a reactionary phenomenon. These are folks trying to preserve themselves. My Std 5 Science teacher told me that the number one priority of every living creature is self perpetuation. That is what little Fazuls are trying to do.

About our culture of "deception and fraud", this is something that is deep rooted. Getting rid of this stupid culture will take a lot of time and, more importantly,an enormous amount of effort. I don't really know how it plays into the context of world terror, but I acknowledge its existence.

About G2G transactions, what was wrong with the sale of the Grand Regency again? This is something I have honestly struggled to understand. It's been a pain in the ass getting this. But then again, there are so many things I don't get-ama vipi?

  8. Taabu your comments "Fazul is around shopping for a doctor at the right price to attend to his ailing kidneys"

If Fazul is who they say he is then, did he ever consider or just imagine that maybe...just maybe that one of the people he bombed and killed was gonna save his ailing kidney?

Anyway we have this stupid notion of I and Now that is i will amass as much as i would want for now you dont ever sit down to think about tomorrow. Do they ever think about the future of their children and their children's children. Practical example Kenya Refineries being sold to the libyans today it just means that one day if Kenyans are going to discover oil in whatever part of this country, it will never belong to us, it will be the Libyans after all they gave you the few bucks (9 silvers)that you needed at that time. By the time they discover that they erred like Judas (i mean the one and only Judas Iscariot) it will be too late and the only option they will have is suicide.

A wrong decision is costly at any time and it will haunt you for the rest of your life. For example a one night stand, damages you completely, you contract STD or even AIDS or better still unwanted pregnancy...Then? How i hope that even as our leaders are busy auctioning us to the highest bidder they will think before signing on the dotted line. They will auction us and the bomb the remaining for what? 9 silvers

  9. Thats right Vikii, shambolic foreign affairs policy by your hero and long serving foreign affairs minister Kalonzo Musyoka.

How come the terrorists didnt bomb Mozambique, Ghana, Angola, Ethiopia or the tens of other African nations? Why Kenya?

As I said before Kalonzo's MFA CV reads like who's who in global terrorism....

As a matter of fact, Kalonzo's tenure in about each ministerial docket he has served has been total failure:

Education: Doomed....KNUT were constantly on strike or go-slow
Environment: Disastrous and Corrupt....Practically gave away the Karura Forest to political friends then went ahead and licenced Nuclear/radioactive waste plants in Kajiado in total disregard to health and environmental concerns
Home Affairs: Complete Failure.....Terrorist FAZUL got his two Kenyan passports when Kalonzo was in-charge at Immigration earlier this year. Again, national security was seriously undermined when Prison guards went on strike
Works&Housing: Pathetic....No single public housing estate developed. Kibera/Carlifonia Highrise flats developed for slum dwellers before his tenure were instead sold to politically correct.

Vikii, Unless you have a better record of Kalonzo as an organising secretary to the autocratic KANU regime and his personal actions which consigned a healthy & vibrant Kenneth Matiba into a helpless disabled human being, I am afraid I hold Kalonzo directly responsible for the setting and sustainment of Al-Qaieda cells in Kenya.

Quite similar to was has made fugitive Felicien Kabuga evade capture for the last 10 years!

  11. I was once in Addis Ababa attending a Jamhuri day party at the Kenyan Embassy. We ran out of Tusker and decided to ration, preserving the remaining Tusker for Kenyans only. When an Ethiopian gate-crasher was told this by theClub treasurer, the Ethiopian really laughed. Then he said 'Ati Tusker reserved for Kenyans! I can become a Kenyan even tomorrow by paying Birr 3000 (Sh 30K). It feels very bad sometimes to be Kenyan. That is why Mamlukis can come and bang' the first daughter and .....Very sad.

    ReplyDelete
  12. My friend, Phil, your worldview is hilarious. I am not sure what to make of it, but it is trully a must-read. It makes me laugh.

"No single public housing estate developed".
When was the Raila-instigated warders strike again? It was sometimes in April, right? Some three months after Kalonzo's appointment as Home Affairs minister, right? Well, the construction of a housing estate for these fellows in three months would have taken one helluva minister there, not even one with supervisory and coordination powers. BTW, has it not been 6 months since Raila's appointment? How many estates do they have now in Kibera and Highrise (it has been a while you know?)

About this "shambolic" Foreign Service policy; I am not in the habit of taking it upon my place to decide who the best minister for whatever ministry was. But I have read several comments from you telling us how Kalonzo was not the best Foreign Affairs Minister. I dont who said he was. You keep publicly denying something nobody (except you) has alleged. You have made some fervent attempts to make us instead regard Robert Ouko as the legitimate owner of that crown. BTW, did we have a foreign service policy during Ouko's time before Kalonzo came to the ministry. If yes, did the latter just trash it or what happened? I'm just asking, you know?

As far as you are concerned Al-Qaeda bombs those nation and states with the worst Foreign service ministers. That is why the United States has been so repeatedly bombed, it is why Spain, the UK and Turkey have been bombed. On the other hand, the countries with the best ministers serving in these offices like Ethiopia, Rwanda and Somalia have been spared--courtesy of some sound foreign affairs policy in these countries. Well, that is an interesting perspective on terrorism. As predictably risible as they come.

    I don't envy you, brother, I don't.

  17. Kenya security forces have no capacity to forestall a terrorist attack. We are just leaving at the mercy of God! Or is it at the pleasure of terrorists?

Dont be fooled that motion is action. Its very sickening to note that our police are not pro-active but reactionary. The reason to this sad affairs is because the force lacks professionals and equally the tools of trade. Throw in the elements of nepotism and sleaze and you get the complete picture.

If these Osama scouts wanted to torch the KICC, our security guys will not stand in their way unless they get intelligence and logistical support from the big boys:US UK et all..

  18. In Kenya, president Kibaki himself would personally plant bombs where and when ordered if the terrorists paid him the right price. That is how low we have sunk. I think Kalooser would do the same. Not sure about Molasses... methinks once he has taken the taken, he will scream 'terrorists' from the mountain tops. Remember how he sold Moi NDP and jumped ship just at the right moment?

May I ask you, why did the terrorist bomb New York twin-tower, London Underground, Madrid Rail, Bali Nightclub? Why did they not bomb Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Singapore, Japan or ten other countries in Europe or developed world?

You like the blame game don't you? Do you know wherever there is blame there is no progress. Sometimes you have to say yes, that person made a mistake but lets find a way forward or a way to remedy that situation.
We must be willing to take risks and accept responsibility for mistakes without fear of criticism or prosecution but at the same time we cannot afford to keep dwelling in the past - what could have been or what might have happened.

By the way Vikii, I still stand by my comments.

Kalonzo, by then working as Moi's puppet, completely destroyed Kenya's foreign affairs policy. It is one of the reasons why terrorists targeted American interests here.

Talking of who is the best minister we have had so far, Kalonzo trailing his fellow KANU hawk Dr. Bonaya Godana, he is also far behind Dr. Munyua Waiyaki and he is yet to grasp the diplomatic acumen of one Dr. Robert Ouko....Incidentally, the latter was murdered in cold blood while serving in a cabinet conspiracy in which also Kalonzo served. This Kalonzo man is the worst president Kenya will NEVER have. I can only compare Kalonzo to one Chirau Ali Mwakwere (already messing the transport sector) and maybe Moses Wetangula.

Wishing death to some of these people just doesnt work--strangely they even live longer. Even if they do die, they will be replaced by others just as bad, knowing what humans are and what drives them. As an aside--i dont think Emilio Kibaki is a bad fellow. I can see the blows a-comin!Wooiii! Go easy.

What we should be thinking about is how to CONSTRAIN their behvaior through rules, and failing that how to punish them, severely, so that there are consequences to their behavior. So how do we do that?

Now, Mo Ibrahim's prestigious scheme of feting and rewarding past presidents is thought a good incentive to streamline/align the behavior of these guys with society's values and goals, but we're yet to see its value for Kenya's leaders. Our own retirement scheme is a dismal failure--just look at Moi, payukaring all over the place

You see, when you write a comment here it is visible for all to see whether directed to a particular person or to the general viewing public, and you should expect criticism, applause or it to be totally ignored. Like you said, everyone here is entitled to their own opinion and that means if you see something off the rail, you have the right to challenge it. So don't shy away, feel free to challenge me.

  33. Well, well,Taabu that could be one way of looking at the whole debacle that is terrorism.

Just a thought also, can we take a glimpse of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).Those are whites and terrorism is compared or construed to be a preserve of Muslims. The IRA had some point to make to the holders of the echelons of power in the UK.

They used the most crude methods to make themselves heard and indeed talks were called and even though i have lost the names, some of the IRA leaders went on to hold goverment office.I could also agree that indeed all is not yet settled in Ireland but the process is progressive in a good manner when compared to our own Serena shenanigans.

My point is this and excuse me if i am wrong,i dont remember hearing any vocabulary being pasted on the conduct and person of the IRA operatives. In essence they were not terrorists but something that i cannot or do not have a name for.

Fast track to Osama and cohorts, they are magaidi, mamluki name it.I dont know what cause they are pursuing but certainly they have one.Theirs is a lack of podium to sit with the percieved aggressor to iron out their grievances if any.In 1998 i remember hearing something to the effect that Osama was upset after the Amerry-cans reneged on promises made on or before the war against Russia in Afghanistan.Beats me why most wars are fought on Muslim territories!

In other words am trying to say,the death aside, can't we shift the blame to the percieved aggressors and sort out the mess?My friend asked me yesterday about what i would do if i met Fazul face to face.I was unable to answer him. Can't we surely lool elsewhere for the cause of this menace and square it clean and clear. For instance is Guantanamo going to achieve a thing?Doesn't it ignite the motivation to carry out more attacks?Such small time injustices ,percieved or committed are the recipe for the terror that is meted out on innocent fellas.

Then the issue of our very own abbetting and nesting the suspects!I think it all boils down to economic mismanagement. If a Kenyan police is well paid and lives in a sane and clean enviroment,i dont think he can accept a bribe of any nature to keep giving security and intelligence briefs to terror suspects, neither will the official at immigration.

    Only my thoughts!

These are people who are willing to send their sons to die in Iraq so as to sustain the American way of life. Which Kenyan man or woman is ready to die for our country today? You can search the whole planet.

Some will say that the US foreign policy is clandestine at best. Nonsense. Why should bright people like Condoleezza Rice develop a policy to benefit Kenyan babies or retard death in Rwanda? Kwani where are the Kenyan or Rwandan counterparts? You cannot give someone like Wetangula such a docket then complain about hurting from the policies of other foreign governments. The US foregin policy should serve only Americans……no matter how pissed off Osama gets.

And yes you are right, they rule by dangling foreign aid, IMF loans and other trinkets. That is why Kenya is trapped and thus languishing. BS. There's no resaon why Kenya cannot sustain itself. And yes, if we had balls, we would default on those loans.

I must have heard your call to wake up because I don’t usually log into Kumekucha at this time of the day, but I tell you what, your call must have been very loud and I cannot ignore it. I don’t get people to challenge me here, and so I am grateful you have done so.

Now back to your challenge, first, let me clarify to you, I do not have thieving brothers and second, I don't understand Kenya politics that well- I find Kenya politics too murky and too ruthless for me. Everyone claim to be squeaky-clean but that's just lip service. Unfortunately in our nation we have allowed politicians to loot and plunder our national resources unchallenged for a very long time. So now the politicians feels like a norm to loot public funds because they expect to get away with it. Every single politicians we have today is in someway tainted with sleaze and lies. Even your messiah Raila Molasses Odinga! If you look at the "party for change-ODM" most of them have been in fact implicated with corruption at the highest level, from the Pentagon members right down to the councillors.

So, what is the solution for Kenya endemic corruption problem? And its definitely not Raila Odinga. I don't have time to go through some of them now so next time I blog here lets...

    Sleep well don't have nightmares.

  57. august, 1998 bombings had nothing to do we kenya but we only ended up as collateral damage in an idealogical war that was waged by a group of religious zealots.

otherwise, kikulacho ki nguoni mwako. we are our own worst enemy number one.

how many kenyans can afford to forfeit the opportunity of selling their own passports whenever offered a mere two thousand euros or dollars and then turn around and claim it was lost or stolen?

and let's not forget the corrupt and greedy civil servants who have been selling kenyan passports, entry visas, work permits, naturalization papers, import and export ceritificates. construction permits to outsiders (economic/political/cultural/religious/educational terrorists) for the last fourty five years.

thousands and thousands of tanzanians, ugandans, sudanese, ethiopians, rwandans, burudians, congomanis, non-kenyan born somali, and non-kenyan born indians have managed to immigrate to the west using kenyan passports.

where and how did they manage to get them? we all know they got them from those selling kenya to outsiders 24/7. and of course they purchased them from insiders (kenya's worst enemy number one) based at the passport control office - immigration.

these days, one can't dare trust kenyan pastors or even kenyan catholic priests working for a monthly salary in canada, usa or britain.

we have no sense of home grown loyalty, pride, national conviction, belonging and what have you. we are so ready to trample on anything kenyan or speak ill of our country and people whenever we are pomised a sliver of thirty pieces of silver.

there is a fool who always displays his acquired foreign passport whenver he returns to kenya for three two weeks vacation. i wonder why people like him can afford a longer vacation given their new found wealth status in the west.

these days the so called "men of the cloth" aka "undercover economic opportunists/prophets for profit" working in the west, are so busy stabbing each other in the back so that they can gain crumbs of comfort from their wazugu masters.

they have cultivating the art of speaking ill of their country and people so they can get some funds to nigerian type of 411 school busary programmes for the poor and other projects that never see the light of day.

why not speak of the good and no so good about kenya to their paymasters? is it so hard to do?

who remembers the the well known man of the cloth who was given sixty thousand euros over a ten year period for the reconstruction of a local school in his home area but used the money to purchase house plots in sukari or the coast region?

luckly, the donors are now seeking their monies (funds) back or he will bee taken to court. (update will follow soon).

what about the senior immigration officer who sold sixty-two passports to non-kenyan born somali after the fall of the government of mohamed siad barre in 1991?

he now lives on his farm without wondering how much damage he did to his country and the degree to which he compromised the kenyan immigration system.

we are our own worst enemy number one. kikulacho ki nguoni mwako.

  58. Phil has noted that;

And yes, if we had balls, we would default on those loans.

    Our comment:

No doubt, this is an easy statement to make. However, it does not make right, nor practical.

    Why so?

    (a) Article VIII of the IMF Treaty does not allow us this cause of action. In this sense, we cannot RESTRICT without the approval of the IMF the making of payments and transfers of current international transactions. So, to the extent that we are members of the IMF, then, your course of action is not available to us.

We are aware of the cheap arguments that IMF is a tool of USA and the West. However, a critical analysis of the origins of the IMF and its functions, will disabuse many of this notion. Any one interested, ought to read what happened between 1914 - 1945, as regards debts and international payments.

The law governing money in international law is complex even to the lawyers who are aware of these issues. Thus, we seek not to explain these issues further than this. This blog is not the best forum for this.

All we will say is this, the IMF has a very important role to play in the stability of international economic system. In fact, if u remove IMF today, there will be unprecedented chaos in the international trade system and eventual wars.

    Why so?

    (a) Without the IMF's supervision, any nation can wake tomorrow and restrict international payments. The consequence of this will be that Kenyans and any other nation, will not receive proceeds of their exports. Is that what you want? And, if Kenya cannot get its export proceeds, how do we purchase oil and other stuff?

    (b) If we default, we will have effectively removed ourselves from the IMF ambit. Thus, any nation that we trade with, can wake and restrict payments to Kenya. That, will only ruin our economy.

    (c) Secondly, a default sends a very bad signal to international investors. One, since we become too risky, everything, including capital becomes expensive. Also, to counter this risk, investors will seek higher and faster returns. This can only drive more kenyans into poverty as we become even more uncompetitive.

    (c) Perhaps, to the surprise of many, all our international debts, are governed by New York or English law. Furthermore, all debt contracts have arbitration clauses. Thus, we will be sued in New York and we will definitely lose the cases. As a result, our export proceeds will be attached abroad.

Thus, default of debts in international system, is not a light matter. Well, it may seem so on the face of it, but, a careful analysis of the legal issues involved, counsels us that it is a course of action we cannot advise, even though, we are aware of the debt burden.

    taabu, good post

hey vikii, steering clear of the SKM bizna, raise some interesting points about the pawns in the vicious hate/war cycle, as indeed some others above.

our concern here should be that whereas we cannot really engage deeply or even understand some of these conflicts, we must remain cognisant to these hostilities and be permanently prepared or on-guard for any eventuality and its impact. the 10 shilling bribe received today may actually turn around to wipe out your entire family next week, which is exactly taabu's point in this post. we are all too aware of this, and i look forward with more hope because we are all slowly but surely beginning to take charge of our destiny.

add the tag on Kibaki's companies and shareholding that he acquired through corrupt dealings??

KIBAKI/ president Daniel Arap Moi, former Attorney General Charles Njonjo OWN investment company which they named Heri Limited(STILL DO).

    UNDER HERI LTD- THYE OWN

    1.Norfolk Towers,
    2. College House
    3.Kolobot Gardens

AND THE SAME company HERI LTD IS also invested heavily in

    a. quoted securities at the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE)

b.and was for many years among the top 20 shareholders of ICDC Investments (now Centum Investments)

    c. Nation Media Group

    d.Jacaranda Hotel

    e.Standard Chartered Bank

    f.Lonrho Motors East Africa

    g. Housing Finance Company

    h. The Barclays Bank,

    i.Clarkson

    j.Southern Ltd

    k.Taisho Monarch Insurance Company.

It is also said that Kibaki also has an interest in International House Limited, the company associated with businessman Chris Kirubi and the one that owns the prestigious International House.

It is said that even when Kibaki fell out with Moi and Njonjo their business links remained intact and sustained by the fact that they operated mainly through investing companies. This arrangement meant that the did not have to meet in order to transact business since the firms were run by hired professionals and all that the shareholders did was to wait for their dividend cheques.

Another company associated with Kibaki is:

    1. African Liaison & Consultants Services Limited (ALCS).

According to financial analysts, today African Liaison is among the major shareholders in such public quoted companies as:

2.CFC Bank, Barclays Bank of Kenya,

    3.CMC Holdings

    4.Heritage Insurance Company.

Kibaki together with Joe Wanjui, He is fabulously wealthy and owns a huge stake - together with business magnate Chris Kirubi - in UAP Provincial Insurance, one of the largest Insurance companies in the region.

(BY THE WAY JOE WANJUI I'M TOLD BY A CLOSE SOURCE WAS RECENTLY IN CANADA OTTAWA AND WAS HOSTED BY THE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF KENYA MADAM JUDITH - AND WAS BEING INTRODUCED TO SOME CANADIAN CROOKED COMPANIES IN MONTREAL ( THINK AIR CANADA) SOME CEO'S WHO RUN IT DOWN-

    KWALE
MY ADVISE IS GO TELL KIBAKI TO STOP SENDING PEOPLE LIKE JOE WANJUI ABROAD TO CANADA TO SIGN SHADDY DEALS

WITH THE SUPPORT OF AN INCOMPETENT HIGH COMMISSIONER WITH NO TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS

I HEAR CANADA DOES NOT TOLERATE CORRUPTION AND COMPANIES OR CEO THAT ARE CORRUPT ARE BROUGHT TO BOOK WITH SHAME........

JOE WANJUI WAS IN CANADA WEEK OF 14TH -20TH JULY 2008 IN OTTAWA AND MONTREAL MEETING WITH CORRUPT CEO'S AND DIRECTORS OF COMPANIES WELL KNOWN TO BE CORRUPT.... FIGURE THIS OUT

BY THE WAY MORE DETAILS WE UNDERSTAND JOE WANJUI WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS DEAR WIFE.... TRIP PAID FOR BY KENYA TAX PAYERS TO DO KIBAKI'S CORRUPT BUSINESS.....

I MAINTAIN KIBAKI AND JOE WANJUI HAVE A CASE TO ANSWER IN PARLIAMENT..,, OUR BACK BENCHES MEMBERS WILL HAVE A FULL REPORT SEND TO THEM ON WHO JOE WANJUI MET IN MONTREAL AND OTTAWA....... SHOCK SHOCK-

  73. Is 8/08/08, the luckiest day of the year?

You might have not woken up today feeling very lucky. And what with falling house prices, rising food costs and the ever-increasing cost of motoring, you may well consider yourself quite the opposite.

But don't fall into complete and utter despair just yet. For today -in some circles at least - is held to be one of the luckiest days ever.

Its significance is said to lie in the importance of the number eight, which is linked to good fortune by many cultures.

And as this is the eighth day of the eighth month of the eighth year of this millennium, there are three of them in a row - 8/8/08 - which apparently all adds up to a pretty darn cosmically good state of affairs.
