Of Village Coaching and Communal Vices

It came as no surprise when secondary school pupils justified their present destructive streak to learning from politicians by example. Students in Naivasha stunned MPs by claiming that they learnt first hand that in Kenya one is only listened to via violence. It seems learning vices and perfecting them has been elevated to new heights in our moral and national psyche. Call it what you may but the students’ take is nothing but DECEPTION disguised as inference.

We have made deception a defining trait as a nation. The kids are simply taking it a new level in the delusion their sentiments sounds intellectual. If copy-pasting sins was such a virtue, why don’t these smart students burn their homes in protest when their parents deny them what they want. Well, these genius Kenyans may have just read comments from Kumekucha. Buck passing is our middle name.

Communal vices
Long gone are the days when we used to debate in primary school about the merits of being a doctor above an engineer. Such debates must be very primitive I the eyes of present students who have proved no different from their mentors. If these students are genuinely looking for mentors or hungry for positive influence why have don’t they aspire to be space scientists or to emulate ultimate political trophy be ministers or ultimately scandal-free president?

Granted, the escapist sentiments by the secondary school students will be cheaply hailed as representative on national youth psyche oblivious of their predictability given where they were mouthed. Thee truth is these students had been couched on what to say to reflect the feeling of their parents and villages. Pretending otherwise is to engage in a long ego trip. Bottom line is as a nation, we are critically allergic to taking hard decision that won’t bring speedy monetary returns.

  1. The Haki Yetu anthem that ODM harped pre election and the subsequent ODM orchestrated violenced that ensued once oDM 'was denied Haki Yetu' was a good practical lesson on all young men in Kenya. ODM by a single blow told all and sundry that if yo want to get half the cake, you dont need money but shout and cause carnage.

Now the kids are playing to the same rules and we are all suprised?
Typical Kenyans, passing the buck is what Taabu u have done once again but i guess you bit your tongue..Lol

you are one pathetic human being. Was the stolen election a good practice to be emulated by the youth ? No wonder stealing of exams is viewed as the best way to get a decent grade.

I am not very bright and need someone to explain to me how the country achieved stability when ODM-K accepted to work with Kibz.' i keep on hearing it from PNU/ODM-K camps whenever they give on of those kalonzo/uhuru for 2012 interviews. it annoys me that they still have the audacity to pat themselves on the back.

  7. Rwanda: Country Welcomes Kenyan Decision to Reduce Number of Weighbridges

    http://allafrica.com/stories/200808110597.html

    The New Times (Kigali)
    11 August 2008
Posted to the web 11 August 2008
    Felly Kimenyi-Kigali

The recent announcement by Kenyan Premier Raila Odinga that the numerous weighbridges along the Northern Corridor would be reduced to cut the cost of doing business has been welcomed by the Rwandan government.

Odinga last week directed the Kenyan Minister of State for Provincial Administration and Internal Security to reduce the number of weighbridges along the Mombasa-Busia road from 13 to two by the end of this year.

"This is a tremendous development for East Africa, for the very reasons President Kagame has ceaselessly championed - prosperity creation and development," said Dr David Himbara, the head of Policy and Strategy unit in the Office of the President.

He said that President Paul Kagame is most pleased not only for Rwanda but for the whole East African Community - being its current Chairperson.

The President has on several occasions called for the reduction of the number of weighbridges along this road which links Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to the Indian Ocean.

He also said that there are unnecessary police roadblocks which contribute to corruption in the region.

Consequently, Odinga directed that these roadblocks be reduced from 47 to 15 in an effort to ease the region's access to the global market and therefore encourage business in the region.

At the just-concluded First East African Business Summit which convened in Kigali, President Kagame said that there are several initiatives that do not cost money, that the community could implement and get back tremendous returns and increased prosperity for East Africans.

"Why should you have 10 weighbridges between Katuna and Malaba? Why should you keep weighing these trucks? We should limit the number of weighbridges to maybe two per country, one at the entrance and one at the exit," the President told the summit that was attended by all regional Heads of State.

He decried these shortcomings following a report compiled during a study commissioned by his office to find out the stumbling blocks to doing business on the Northern Corridor, on which all the above mentioned countries depend for their international trade.

The report according to Himbara, unearthed various shortfalls from the starting point to the end, "even in Rwanda itself in terms of lengthy and archaic documentation procedures and police roadblocks."

Himbara also called upon government officials to be "entrepreneurial" and see businessmen as partners and colleagues - and facilitate them as if their own lives depended on this work.

"This is indeed the fact, given that wealth is generated by business But the Rwandan business sector has also to change its mindset," Himbara added.

He made reference to what the President often tells Rwandan business people - to operate longer hours like our counterparts in other countries.

"The sense here is that if the East African borders are open twenty four hours, and Rwandan business closes at 5 p.m. daily, then it will not be a "win-win" but in a fact a wasted effort," the Presidential aide added.

The decision by the Kenyan government will not only favour the hinterland since an increase in the use of their port will accelerate her gains from the port. Last year she accrued 17 per cent of total revenues from exports from port services.

  8. @UrXlnc,

    Solution
First, politicians have to respect the rule of law and learn to use legal systems for conflict solutions (hey, if the courts are corrupt, whats the parliament doing abt it? nothing!!). that way, there will be a trickle down effect to the citizens and the youths.
Secondly, culture of impunity should be punished stiffly as a deterent. many of the youths who participate in destructions do so knowing that they can always hide in their tribes (remember cries of some tribes being persecuted)...or politicians. criminals should be treated as criminals whether high school kids or big politically connected boys.

otherwise, at this rate we will no longer need courts. all u need is a loud politician who can whip out people's emotions for you to have your way. by the way, don't expect ODM to lead the way on this one. you do not cut the hand that feeds you do you???

HE IS A FOOL NOT TO SEE IT COMING....

ONE DOWN - A FEW MORE TO GO BEFORE THEY GET ENOUGH TO SHOW HIM OUT OF THE PRIME MINISTER POSITION( PLAN A)in pnu camp...

The tension and protests that rocked the December presidential elections were replayed Monday as ODM disputed the announcement of the PNU candidate as the winner of the Kamukunji parliamentary seat.

After Mr Simon Mbugua was declared winner, ODM representatives rejected the outcome describing it as “a sham”.

The Electoral Commission of Kenya said that Mr Mbugua, 34, had garnered 22,614 votes while ODM’s Abdi Yusuf Hassan got 16,016.

Mr Abdi Yusuf Hassan of ODM-K got 7,663 votes while Mr PLO Lumumba, a lawyer and former Constitution of Kenya Review Commission Secretary, got 3,080.

After the results were released, Mr Hassan said he would go to court to file a petition against Mr Mbugua’s victory.

    Warrant of arrest

Mr Mbugua, a Nairobi car dealer who has a warrant of arrest against him, was declared the winner by the returning officer, Ms Pryscillar Wamiru, at Shauri Moyo YMCA Hall.

Initially, Ms Wamiru had only announced the winner, causing an uproar in the hall. Later, she released results of the other contestants.

PNU also bagged five civic seats in the constituency while ODM secured two.

The announcement ended one of the longest waits for election results in a constituency.

The tallying of votes was disrupted by a rowdy mob in late December but the court last week ordered that the tallying be completed and results announced.

The 20-minute tallying was marred by shouts and name-calling, with ODM leaders accusing their Grand Coalition partners of rigging the election.

  21. Raila implicated in the post election violence report by KNHRC

Prime minister raila odinga is among 200 influential leaders whose names are linked to the post-election violence.raila, cabinet minsiters william ruto and henry kosgey are alleged to have incited, funded and/or organized the violence according to the july 2008 full report of the govt's own national commission on human rights: on the brink of precipice-a human rights account of kenya's post-2007 election violence report. Also named in the report are mps franklin bett(buret), zakayo cheruiyot (kuresoi), john pesa (migori), peter anyanga omondi (nyatike), ali hassan joho (kisauni) and ramadhan kajembe (changamwe).in addition, the late mps kipkalya kones (bomet), lorna laboso (sotik) and david kimutai too(ainamoi) have been mentioned. However, some of the names were removed from the report that was released to the media.

  24. Telling Kikuyu's that The biggest crime that has ever been committed in Kenya was THE STEALING OF THE DEC '07 by KIBAKI ni kama kupigia mbuzi Guitar. What The thief called Kibaki has done is to provide a very bad example to Kenyan's and especially his tribesmen that STEALING pays. If a 76 year old Kibaki with a so called Masters degree in economics from The London School of Economics can STEAL an election and get away with it, what kind of behavior do we Kenyans really expect from our young and impressionable youths. We cannot expect them to have "Good manners" when the wazee's among us are engaging in all manner of "bad manners" all the time - one of the latest being "project save kimunya."

    SOLUTION

Adults and wezee's have to change their values from the current pumbavu one's that have deception, fraud, selfishness and stealing at their core and embrace more civilized ones. Then and only then will our Kenyan society become civilized and better behaved.

  25. msema kweli,

You words are very well received. I would like to round up the picture, finishing up where you so nicely began.

I will do that as follows:

It is a very dark day indeed for the whole of humanity if a variably aged, highly educated and respected man, with a premium education from the University of Chicago or East Germany or Kenya, who, IN THE NAME OF DEMOCRACY, can incite his fellow tribesmen and others allied to him to kill, maim, rape, burn, loot because of some alleged vote rigging.

What a terrible example for their tribesmen and whoever else cares to learn that at the core of democracy is the capacity to resolve severe conflict without resorting to the sword. Then and only then, upon such realization and internalization of the same, shall some modicum of civilization have been attained.

As for the mbuzi and guitar....hilarious!

  26. Guys, as Kenyans we seem to always deviate from the real issues!Look, students are on the rampage but all we do is go into what Kibaki/Raila did or did not do. I understand, this is a grievance that we may carry for the rest of our lives but we have other issues to address. Well, the students in Naivasha said that they were following examples from politicians. i call that a myth and as such needs to be demystified. Those kids were playing on your/my psyche to shift attention. Now that we are all here on Kumekucha talking about politicians, I am telling you that the lil' ones are throwing parties...they have won.

My point is, whether the kids were copying and pasting from the wrong document (when did politicians become anyone's model)or not, something is terribly wrong with our education system. It hurts me to hear PROF. sam Ongeri acknowledge that there was an error in last year's KCSE results and unapologetically so!It pains me when MP's in parliament blame cell phones, TVs and what have you for indiscipline in schools!! Come on, our degree certificates are losing credibility thanks to a crumbling society and government. ...Those obsessed with operations pls take this on..."Operation save our education".

  27. b-carotene, I hear you. I shall talk about the ODM supporters. Just an example, If someone went to visit his parents at shags and found the area chief STEALING all the domestic possessions of your parents - everything that they toiled so hard to own - isitoshe, when you arrive you see a strange lorry (this lorry has been hired by the chief to carry the STOLEN property) in your parents compound and the the chief's two AP's have tied and gagged both of your parents and locked then in the toilet (something like flooding Uhuru park with GSU and anti riot squads and banning all live broadcasts by the electronic media), what would one think, feel and do? The natural reaction is to get annoyed, very annoyed and justifiably so, how can the chief who is meant to be you servant and link to the goverment engage is such blatant robbery? Well, that is what Kibaki and his fellow "conspirators" did on Dec '30 last year. To expect people just to sit back and let things be resolved "peacefully" is to I think be asking for too much.

The Chief (Kibaki) should have thought about the consequences of his foolish actions! If he had done so, people would not have gotten annoyed and reacted the way they did.

And contrary to what many PANUA people think we did not have to be incited to get angry - the foolish actions of the chief (Kibaki) ensured that the subsequent events that happened after the electoral theft had to happen.

And as all the above was happening, the young fellows were watching and seeing what the adults and wazee's were saying and doing. Depressing but true.

This thing of Kibaki's electoral theft will not go away, the chickens will come home (to Kibaki) to roost - and when they come back home to roost, these chickens will be the size of Ostriches. Kibaki will end up wishing he never stole the election.

  29. msema kweli,

Truly, you have once again spoken very well. Sorry for the lack of an immediate response--duty called.

In all fairness, allow me to remind you that there were allegations of theft in the ODMorons quarters as well.

Allow me to also make one simple observation regarding your hypothetical example of when you found your area chief stealing from your household. My very simple concern is this: where is the sense in murdering, maiming, raping, looting your neighbor’s house, your neighbor’s neighbor, and so on, including even burning your own house? Why should you attack people no different from yourself who were not party to the stealing? Why not just deal with the area chief per given procedure or otherwise for you violent types? Where is the logic in murdering innocents? People get angry all the time and to be sure they don’t go jumping for the next panga and chopping everyone up. Poor excuse.

By legitimizing the use of violence, the ODMorons have placed Kenya in a very precarious position—just look at what the young ones are doing today, burning down their very own schools because they are unhappy, many thanks to the ODMorons and their violent approach to resolving conflict. It pays off, after all.
