How The Kenyatta And Moi Families Made Their Dirty Money

There was a time I was naïve enough to believe that it is the political class who rule Kenya.

Not really. Allow me to give you a simple example to prove my point.

When president Kenyatta died in Mombasa in August 1978 and his then Vice president took over the presidency, many did not realize how crafty a political player Moi really was. Indeed late into the Moi presidency there were still many Kenyans who did not think he was very intelligent. Ironically that is how Moi won his greatest battles, by people underestimating him. The minute folks stopped taking him for granted (most notable in 2002) was the minute Kanu was removed from power. But I digress.

Moi was clearly very frightened as he hesitantly took over the reigns of power in 1978. Who was he scared of? The Kiambu mafia? That is laughable because the kitchen cabinet is only operational when the owner of the kitchen (in this case the president) is around. The minute the “owner of the kitchen” dies or leaves office, that powerful kitchen cabinet is dead in the water.

A clue as to who Moi may have been terrified of can be figured out from the rallying call he came up with very early on. He promised that he would “fuata Nyayo” which means “follow in the foot-steps” of President Kenyatta. This was to reassure all those wealthy powerful folks who held the purse strings of Kenya that they had nothing to worry about over their ill-gotten wealth.

Another example. I am persuaded that on that memorable December day in 2002 at Uhuru Park, as President Kibaki took the oath of office to become Kenya’s third president, deep in his heart he was determined to root out corruption. I have plenty of evidence to support this including an intimate meeting I attended with the then presidential candidate and a certain organization at Mfangano House in Nairobi in early 2002. At the meeting Kibaki kept on repeating that the money collected from taxes was more than enough to take care of plenty in the country with very little recourse to foreign Aid. H also convinced me and many others at the meeting of about 30 people that he was serious about fighting corruption. The truth is that the president was well-intentioned but amazingly, rather naïve.

I also have plenty of information and other evidence to prove that reality hit Kibaki a few months after he had taken office and caused him to change his entire thinking on a lot of things. This is what led him to sanction what we now know as the Anglo Leasing scam—further proof that the people with real power in Kenya are the people with the cash.

Indeed a very similar trend can be seen in President Moi who on taking over office was not a rich man. He was merely a simple farmer with one small company called Lima Limited that sold agricultural machinery. Moi quickly realized that a poor man cannot rule Kenya for long. As you read this, the two wealthiest Kenyans are Daniel T. Arap Moi and Gideon Moi in that order.

Those who have been calling for a new constitution have a point because going by the current constitution, cash is the real ruler of Kenya. Just look around you, if you are in Kenya. “The message” always flies at you from all directions. It simply says this; “woe unto you, if you DON’T have money.” The thread of that message comes right from the top to the ordinary mwananchi down there who is terrified of any sickness visiting their household during this cold season. (Am told it has been exceptionally cold in Kenya this year.)

Never cheat yourself that it is Presifent Kibaki who is ruling Kenya. The name of the real ruler of Kenya is President Cash Money.

This explains the reason why business and politics can never be separated in Kenya. And I am not talking about small business here. And it is also for the same reason that the list of the top 100 wealthiest Kenyans always reads like a who-is-who in Kenyan politics past and present.

The Kenyatta family made it’s vast weath from grabbing land. Pure and simple. It was often said that the old man (Kenyatta) never saw a fertile piece of land that he could resist getting his grabby old hands on. In fact at public meetings, Kenyatta would often talk of “shamba iko na rotuba nyingi sana” (fertile land) and you could see the saliva literally oozing out of his mouth in excitement. It is said that every time the Kenyatta family gets cash broke, they simply sell off a small parcel of the vast land they own countrywide.

This is the reason why it was very juvenile for any Kenyan to have expected both the Kenyatta and Moi family to support the new constitution during the historic referendum of 2005. How do you cut your own two feet with an axe as you watch? If you are still confused just find out what the proposed constitution said about land and a truth and reconciliation commission.

Another corruption technique used by the Kenyatta family to acquire vast wealth was what was popularly known in those days as the “10 per cent rule.” Before any foreign investor opened for business on Kenyan soil, it was mandatory that 10 percent of the shares of his company would have to go to a member of the Kenyatta family. This explains the family interest in numerous tourist hotels at the Coast for example. Of course Moi and the Kalenjin brigade came later and adjusted that rule to as high as 90 per cent in some instances. I kid you not. And in the process caused people to discover what had been going on.

The Moi family did indeed do exactly what Moi promised on taking over power—walifuata Nyayo za Kenyatta. They followed in the footsteps of Kenyatta, albeit with some major adjustments. Somebody decided that being rich mostly in assets, as the Kenyatta family are, was not for the Mois. This family needed to see the cash, literally. And that was one of the reasons why it was mandatory that if you wanted to see Moi you carry with you a briefcase (strictly no cheques please) containing a million shillings or more in hard cash. This fact has been confirmed by various sources including Kamlesh Paul Patttni and jailed businessman Ketan Somaia who both gave evidence separately under oath saying that they had left briefcases full of cash when they went to see Moi for the first time. So let us say that the president (who was very energetic, and now we know part of the reason why) had like 10 appointments a day, each lasting less than 5 minutes…WOW!! Before an hour was up, he would have made a cool Kshs 10 million, which was a lot of dough in those days.

The story of how Kenya lost out on a very sweet deal concerning the Kenya Meat commission illustrates how business decisions were made by the Moi family during president Moi’s long reign.

A Japanese company was interested in financing the revival of the then stalled Kenya Meat Commission. They would bring in the machinery, train staff and finance the day to day operations. The meat would then be exported and sold in the world market and from the proceeds the Japs would deduct their investment and when that was done, ownership of the factory would revert back to Kenyans. Very sweet deal and all the government needed to do was to sign on the dotted line. But there was a problem. In fact a very big problem. Somebody asked the question: “Where is the cash?” They couldn’t see immediate cash in the deal so they were NOT interested.

Later when President Kibaki took over, he was aware of the deal and he has since tried everything to revive it. But as they say, time and tide wait for no man and this saying is especially true in business. The Japs I am sure got their meat elsewhere. Kwani Kenya has a monopoly as the only source of beef worldwide?

  1. These facts are not new to us. What we want are suggestions of how to tackle the past injustices.

Orengo is daring to touch the tail of a lion. Let's give him support (irrespective of tribe or political party). He is a man who wants to see a better future for Kenya.

Corruption is a cancer cell in Kenya. Even Secondary school pupils corrupt the exams and are afraid of Mock exams.

Kenyan society is rotten and needs urgent healing.

The strikes we experience in schools are worrying. The reasons are indeed due to corrupt culture but also to our socio-political setup in Kenya.

1)There is no direct communication between a student and a Head master (who feels he/she is a god).

2)No student representation. Prefects represent teachers views. They are COLONIAL HOME GUARDS, who punish fellow students but convey no complaints of students to teachers.

3)Students dont understand exactly why they go to school. Everybody expects them to go to university, even if they are not qualified.

    4) Wrong education system focusing on academics only.

    5) An average student with a C+ has no future in Kenya, if his parents are not rich.

Discipline which many ignorant 'education specialists' quote as the cause is actually NOT. Consumption of drugs is neither the reason.

The authorities should follow these steps to renew the trust and respect the world once had on education in Kenya.

1)Introduce democratic structures in schools: Prefects to be elected by students to represent them.

2)National or regional standardized mocks should be sat twice before the final exams. The mocks should be part of a student's final result.

3)Do away with 8-4-4 immediately. The system aims to take as many student as possible to university, thus promoting exams cheating. With a B-, a candidate has nowhere to go.

    4) Introduce 8-3-2-3 system to reintroduce A-Levels, which can prepare students well for University, the O-Levels after 3 years should prepare for college training (KMTC and all Diploma courses). The University education would be shorter and cheaper for the country and the parents.

5)Improve Youth polytechnics by introducing 3 yr courses enabling them to acquire O-level cert.

6)Stop introducing Degree courses in National Polytechnics. HND is a good qualification combining theory and practicals.

Going to school would have a meaning and many students would have a clear picture of where they will be after education.

  3. I thought this was an interesting Sunday morning read, even if we had the facts before. I love this weekend special idea Chris, its very entertaining!

It is sad that we honestly make an effort to elect people we believe can lead us, then they just end up disappointing us by turning into puppets.

Malingumu, I totally agree with you our society is in need of urgent healing. But I dont know how this will ever be done though, any attempted inquiry is always shot to hell by the elite and just provides an avenue for the well connected to make cash from our tax coffers. Its a sad situation!

i tend somw how to agree with u on this. The most important thing that we should be strugling doing it to identify the cartels that hangs in da Govt

    without this we are doomed.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Apart from the 4 Scandinavian countries, and countries led by murderous dictatorships, there is no other country in the world where the president makes executive decisions. Powerful moneyed cartels determine one of their own, who will specifically protect their interests, and they then pour money and ensure he becomes the president.

In the USA for example, the Jews, the pharmaceutical, arms, and oil cartels determine who rules. That is why lately you might have noticed Obama doing the jewish jig. In most of the developed countries, a 'clean' individual is usually backed for presidency. In Africa and other developing countries, even the most notorious criminal will usually get 'elected' Kibaki and Mugabe style. Criminal gangs do not waste time to have somebody clean in State House: they make sure one of their own is there.

Kibaki has to seek approval from his gang before he can do a thing. The same goes for Mr Molasses Raila or Mr 8-per-cent.

Everything about you is wrong and is based on jealousy of one particular tribe. You keep saying that we must not tolerate corruption, but your fight for corruption is only against one tribe that you feel all of them are thieves and thugs.

Do you call yourself an educated man? If yes then you should know allowing hate in your head is not civilization. I cannot wait when this blog will be closed down. I hope it will be soon than later.

Next Sunday make sure you go to church and avoid this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anon 5:54 AM - going or not going to church should not be a subject here on this blog. The question is do we have to be blind or deaf or do certain people expect us to be both unless, of course, it is them who are preaching, mainly while being safely abroad. These are the Philisters of our modern times. The same kind of people who already Jesus attacked and chased out of the temple for worshipping the wrong Gods. In this special case I would not only talk about worshipping money too much but mainly in trying to convince people who lived upto now in peace with their neighbours that they have to hate each other because the other one is a Kikuyu. How many times have people here asked to even kill those who do not belong to the 'right' tribe, the Central Lesotho ones. They have to be erased, they have to disappear from this earth, they have to be murdered including their families and children - so only those from the Lake survive and lead Kenya into a prospereous future. And those asking for these horrendeous crimes (of course to be done by others because they do not think one minute to dirten their own hands) even call themselves Christians and everything should be done 'for the love of the motherland' as one of these constant hate-distributors uses to finish his posts here.

    You said
.....so only those from the Lake survive and lead Kenya into a prospereous future.

Why do you imagine only those from the lake talk of 'doing a central lesotho'? Are you conveniently forgetting the other 5 provinces?

Oh I see - it's the fear of 'one dangerous man'. Don't you think it's time to move on?

The 'one dangerous man' seems to have confounded you haters with his diplomacy and focus - denying you the 'ammunition' to continue bashing him at every opportunity.

    Please give us a break.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anon 9:03 AM - calling the PM a dangerous man would be totally wrong. Mr. Odinga has proved to be a politician who is not just a Luo Leader anymore but one who tries to become the Leader of a United Kenya. A Kenya without tribal boundaries. You should follow his example and not continue getting stucked in some Lesotho. Or is it fixed in your brain and mind that you cannot see beyond those hate lines? Kenya is more than being a Luo, Luhya, Kikuyu, Kisii, Kalenjin, Kamba, Samburu, Tugen, Massai or those of Arab origins, not to forget the Asians and Whites - they and many more form Kenya. Only if this enters into the mind of certain brain-washed people like you, Kenya will prosper and overcome the dark sides of its past but also keeping in mind and never forgetting that there was and still is a lot to be proud of. Although people like you and some others here try to convince others that each and everything and everybody was bad and has therefore to be erased and killed. We all know that the truth is different, but it is so much easier and at the moment even fitting into the pattern of certain hate monglers here, to say otherwise. And that's for me is the real shame and something we all should try to overcome. As I said before: Raila Odinga has shown the way how to deal with the present political situation. Why then do so many here seem to find it so difficult to follow him - something you found easy and advisable before and during the General Elections. Why do you - contrary to him - continue getting stucked in some stupid hate campaigns? Move on, just as Raila does. Because if you continue living in the past, you are closing the doors to your future.

  17. Chris,

It is time you did a post on the origins and the extent of the wealth of Mr. Molasses Raila. He is currently estimated to be at least Five Billions! Even if we factor in the proceeds from selling NDP to KANU barons in 2002, Five Billions is a lot of money for a man who spent most of his time in political activism. Please, unravel for us the mystery of the Oil/Energy Contracts he got involved in as a minister for Energy and KANU Secretary General in Moi Govt. Has he been a beneficiary of money from Blood Diamonds through Specter International? How much of the drug money was pumped into Raila and ODM elections campaign. Some of these drugs have finally found their way into our High Schools. Remember he is also privately a close friend of Harun Mwau. While at it, don't forget to look at how much money was invested in Raila and ODM by Kabuga (the Rwanda genocide kingpin) through the former Internal Security PS and current ODM MP.

As long as these dirty and bloody money keep on circulating in our politics, Kenyans will never know peace. For us to move on we need answers. Please, Chris, come to our rescue!!!

  18. Kumekucha,

    Thanks for the moderation.

First, Moi protected the Kenyatta family and in picking Uhuru as his successor, expected him to reciprocate the 'good gesture'.

These people surely must think we are stupid. Who would then be next after Uhuru. Gedion? or one of the grandchildren.

A blogger earlier mentioned Orengo and the 'bravery' he has displayed in the course of discharging his duties. While I agree and fully support Orengo, I am genuinely worried about his safety. Folks, pray fo this brave Kenyan. The rot indeed runs deep and wide.

On a seperate note, I have heard that Uhuru is Kibaki's heir apparent. Can I safely assume that Kibaki's motivation is similar to Moi's? If truth be told, Uhuru has zero leadership abilities and the idea that he harbours thoughts of being the next CEO makes me want to puke.

Finally, how does one feel about owning such obscene acres of land when some people are squatters in their own home areas?

It's time we took back Kenya from these thugs.

Only a blood thirsty mungiki thug can write a post like yours- knowing very well the genocide you carried out in Naivasha and Nakuru and here you are pretending that it is your tribe that were killed.
We all know now as the truth continues trickling out that Kibaki and Moi planned and paid for the Eldoret church masacre to confuse kenyans and the world- in order to claim genocide and Kibaki t stay in power(shame on kibaki for killing his own kikuyu tribesmen burning them in church)
hey Moi was used to burning people in houses and churches- I guess kibaki was futtaring Moi's Nyayo to stay in power!!

Kibaki was also very happy to execute more than 500 mungiki youths earlier on in 2007 until after he swore himself in -in the dark as president and he killed those he sent to commit genocide in Naivasha and nakuru- but guess what the truth is coming out- yes the meeting that took place one at his residence the second meeting at statehouse- when he handed out the funding for mungiki to go and committ genocide- (one of the MP's who was present at this meeting is shouting his mouth away on Recorded Camera) watch this space-

Your Time has come to pay back and all the blood thirsty goons that have been bleeding kenya dry through looting and slaughtering innocent kenyans in the name of staying in power by force...which christians?? and which god?? you have no god- you worship the devil and you will burn in hell ,

  28. What I want to know is this;

If lets say Moi had like 10 meetings a day, 5 days a week, or even lets say one day a week; 52 weeks a year. That would make for 52 x 10 = 520 meetings a year.

That's a lot of briefcases no?
What did he do with all the briefcases after emptying the cash?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm sure the many briefcases were put to good use.

I remember during my last year in high school, the man developed a sudden likeness for the 'school' and would occassionally pop in. He always came riding in a volkswagen kombi and inside were 'briefcases of orbit chewing gum' or so we thought. I say this because whenever he visited, he would leave enough packets of orbit to last everyone several weeks.
Anyway, we also know that during his numerous roadside stops, many a heart would be pumping hard whenever he reached into a briefcase containing wads of crisp notes. Knowing how much he loved talking to wenye nchi, how many briefcases he had with him at any one time, is left to the imagination.
Don't forget he had all those harambees and all the money given to him were for 'harambee'. He would probably just give it away as it came -together with the briefcase.
Hahahah....now am beginning to sound ridiculous in my attempt to unravel the mystery of the 520 briefcases per year.

    ReplyDelete

At least Moi asked for brief-cases- he wanted to feel and touch the money-

Kibaki wants his wired all over the world ion offshore accounts-
in the names of his wife
his daughter Judy his Son David and I understand in January and February had rigged the 27th December 2007 election he send out someone to change the accounts into his grand childrens names and some relatives in the states but it didn't pan out- Presure from the USA and Britian on those offshore banking houses was full force- what kibaki forgot to take into account was in this era of Terrorism - nothing is secret anymore- some laws allow peoples accounts to be scrutinized in details:):)

No more hiding stolen money in secret accounts abroad- wait and see - some of this accounts are in the process of being frozen - ata Moi will be screaming soon,,

  31. Just one question: What has Raila and his family ever built FROM THE GROUND UP such that they are now worth 5 billion?
Why is it that Raila's cronies in the ODM high command are all comrades in arms in mega corruption e.g Henry Kosgei who grabbed ancestral land from Kalenjin peasants till an old man was crying on CNN asking for justice? Kosgei's theft made it to internationasl television, imagine that. Where did Raila's comrade in arms Mwau make his money? It is a well known fact that he is an International drug dealer. Why is it that the top brass of ODM is composed of well known remorseless gangsters with the blood of thousands like Ntimama and Ruto?

    ReplyDelete
  32. The only briefcases existing were those during the Harambee Functions. The real big amounts had to be paid to Moi (Biwott, Saitoti and all the rest like Saitoti etc.) as confirmed bank cheques which were then given to the Kenyan Branch of a certain Swiss Bank to be deposited into Number Accounts in Switzerland (for those who do not know what a Number Account means: Only at the moment you open the account, your name is known. But the name is immediately replaced with a number and secret access-code and the name totally disappears even in the computers and files of the bank. Only Swiss Banks have this system - and not only since a few years, since more than 80 years. That's how they had built up their reputation to be the safest banks in the world). Moi used this system even for some smaller private transactions like renting his private house in Karen to a certain white woman in the 80's. Coming back to those Number Accounts: The minimum deposit is 1 Million US-$ - that's the rule to be able to open such an account. These days, most international banks run special accounts offshore, like Cayman Islands, Bahamas etc. - like this they and their clients are out of reach of the stricter rules in their home countries. Blocking accounts, as you suggested, is not that easy - but also not impossible like in the case of Marcos and also the Nigerian Obacha and a few others. But it needs not just a request by some private institutions but an official request by the respective country and its legal Government. And that's where the problem normally starts. Or do you see any Kenyan Government now and in the future asking for such an action including the required Parliament Approval? Too many people would fear that also their accounts could be discussed and questioned. That's why the Kenyatta's, Moi's, Kibaki's and all the rest can sleep peacefully. Even Raila will not dare to touch this subject because it could backfire also on him and many others.

I think you are asleep in KENYA and if you are abroad and you understand today's law's under terrorism after 9/11 Swiss banking and offshore banking is a joke and if i were Britain and USA i would definitely check on all those Kenyan accounts since it is mostly stolen money from the kenyans tax payers and drug money through people like Livondo with some Kibaki's ministers since 2002- 2008 and even now they have not stopped,
as far as I'm concerned Moi, Kibaki and cronies their wealth is stolen wealth from the government and people of kenya and some of it was used to buy guns to come and shoot to kill innocent kenyans- even some containers of guns bought in Somalia are still missing -
So why shouldn't the British and US government Freeze their accounts?? it has nothing to do with Raila or ODM-
Corrupt ill gotten money from any country by a president and cronies should be frozen.
    1. they froze Mengistu's of Ethiopia
    2. They Froze Idd Amins
    3. they Froze Mobutu's of Zaire

all the above had accounts in Europe, US and many offshore accounts.
and may I remind you it is not the Government of kenya to ask for such action!
haven't you heard of peoples class action in international courts against their own governments on human rights abuse?? corruption as far as i'm concerned can be put in that category-
now if you really think that we as kenyans are not intelligent enough to find ways and means to stop corruption and make sure those accounts are frozen then you are in for a rude shock- let me remind Swiss numbered accounts are no more

look at the case of the former prime minister of Canada- the Swiss bank was ordered to give information on account opened by his partner for a court case in germany and they released the information and in Canada the case is still going on - I read it in the news and a committee now has been formed to veiw the case-

if you are sleeping thinking what you and your cronies have stolen from the kenyan people is hidden well in the Swiss Accounts and off share accounts think again- you are in for a rude awakening
and even if you move it they will find the trail.

British high commission in Nairobi in February confirmed that the kenyan government had not asked for their help to retrieve the money stolen from Kenyan by Moi, kibaki and cronies- but now that will be history- kenyans demand all that money to be returned and that will be a class action against the government of Kenya and the thugs and thieves they have allowed to continuously loot the country.

  35. Anon 12:51 - you sound very angry and also quite frustrated. Some of your comments are correct, but most aren't. You can go to Courts for Human Rights Abuses, you can also go to the Financial Settlement one in Den Haag. But for putting your hands on the money stolen by some Government Officials, you need an official request by the respective Government. That's what also the British meant. In all cases you mentioned (Mengistu etc.) it was the Government and not some private individuals and not even the Courts in Den Haag, the UN etc. etc. who have the power to ask for this. And even if the accounts are frozen, it takes years to get some money transferred back. Clever lawyers delay this with all legal appeals. You have to prove each and every amount to be corrupt money and the source and why. It took the Philippines 10 years to get only a small part of the Marcos money. The same happened to the Obacha Millions (by the way a close family friend of the Odingas). The money referred to in these old cases could be found in some bank accounts. But nowadays you cannot find this money in some bank accounts because also these people have discovered an even more effective way to hide (wash) money: using the Internet and Portfolio Deposits around the world. Very safe - much safer than those Number Accounts have ever been. And some small remark at the end: I did not imply that these Number Accounts are still existing. They have been erased years ago because their existence was one of the reasons why the Swiss Banks had such a bad reputation - when referring to them I was talking about the years 1980 - 1990 - that was also the heights of the Kenyan Government Cronies looting the country (Moi abt. 8 Billion Dollars, Biwott 6 Billion $, Saitoti 2 Billion $ and so on). As said before, nowadays there are much more effective ways to invest this money (even via the Nairobi, South African and Nigerian Stock Exchange besides the rest of the world) or the Toronto Stock Exchange as Raila's majority partners in Spectre and the Molasses Plant do - and from there the money is floating around the world. So, my poor friend, keep on dreaming about the 'People's' power. The Russian Karl Marx once upon a time dreamed the same dream - but his and his country's awakening to the reality was quite harsh.

  36. Anon 12:51 AM - allow me another small remark: yoiu talk about a 'class action' aginst the Kenyan Government..... allow me to remind you that the Kenyan Government is not only formed by PNU but also by ODM Members. Your 'class action' would therefore mean going also against all ODM Members - including Raila, Orengo, Otieno etc. - because also they are Members of the Kenyan Government, right? So how do you want to reach your goal? That's why you will have to wait quite a while longer before your - for now unrealistic - dreams could ever become true. I fear, this reality will be catching up with you very soon, if you like it or not.

  37. These attacks against Hon Rt. Raila are truly unwarranted. He's the only Kenyan politician I know who has built an empire honestly out of scratch (very hardworking!!!!), who nicely gave up his clear 'win' in an election, the only candidate who did not indulge in hate speech, a squeaky clean, non violent history of politics, an emerging fearless world leader, worshipped from washington to london .....The list of virtues are endless. You Kenyans are truly blind.

Arise, o Sodom and Gomorrah,oops- Kenyans..,...LOOK,and thou shalt be led by thine Messiah to the land of milk and honey! Heed this call, lest you all turn into ugly pillars of salt and pepper.
