OBAMA DAY

I'm astonished Kumekucha, of all blogs, gave Obama's Day the blackout:)
Our brother, oh! He effectively sealed the nomination jana, totally making history. I pray that he goes on to change A-Merry-Car as it has been known for the last 232 years or so. Now, that's change I can believe in. And you thought A-Merry-Cans could teach us a thing or two about diversity at the top? Not till November this year, or is it 9th of January next year?

  1. PKW,

    You spoke too soon.

Do you see any similarities with ODM/RAO campaigns last year? Change = Mabadiliko.

  2. Whilst millions of us rejoice that Obama was victorious over battler Hillary, let's not forget there are those who wish him ill. Major media outlets in the States are warning their readers against sending hate racist mail which target Sen. Obama. Some of this hate is so serious since it's threatening his dear life.In my humble opinion, any harm to Obama would result to actions "too hard to contemplate" against American interests in the entire world. That's what the white supremacists should be pondering.

  3. Phil, two different kind of change here, Obama vision for change is to unite Americans, make them proud and defend them from terrorism with legitimate resistance against terror groups like Al Qaeda. He also proposed a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank that would invest £30 billion over 10 years, with the promise of creating two million jobs, and to pump £75 billion into developing the green energy sector.
While Odinga vision was to create a Majimbo state, isolate one community and ‘eat’, grant Sharia law and free all known terrorists from jail. He managed to create enough heat on empty promises based on his hunger and quest for power.

Here is one of Obama favorite quotes, "I reject a politics that is based solely on racial identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or victimhood generally. I think much of what ails the inner city involves a breakdown in culture that will not be cured by money alone, and that our values and spiritual life matter at least as much as our GDP."

Obama has said repeatedly, if he fails to win the presidency, it will not because he is black but because he failed to get his message across. Mr odinga continued to blame one community for dominating the country and could not even graciously accept the defeat.

  4. do you know Obama's father used to write reports and papers with predictions that the devpt model proposed by the kenyatta/kibaki govt would lead kenya nowehere as opposed to the radical one proposed by south korea, taiwan, malaysia and others.

today- those radical countries are 2nd world and kenya is still a 3rd world.

we never forgot that it was the Kiambu Mafia in Govt and the Minister for Commerce then (Hon Kibaki) who sacked Senior obama from his govt job and mockingly said, "we will make sure you will be poor and walk on pati pati even if you have a Harvard PhD". similar incideniary remarks were uttered in 2006 (after the Senator visited Kenya and made his Taifa Hall speech) by the Mt. Kenya mafia and Govt Spokesman Dr Mutua.

history is strange. the son of that pati pati man has galavanised history in the super power country. while kenyattas son is stuck in kenyan corrupt and ethnicised politics after failing to get a degree from boston; kibaki's son are politically and business wise dormant and moi sons are kaput.

what goes round comes around. be careful of those whom you demonised and looked down upon for 45 years of kenya's history. they are rising up.

Kibaki and Michuki were in Cabinet in 1963 when Kennedy was running for Presdient when Obama was 1 year old. Today, Obama at 46 is a candidate and Kibaki and Michuki are still in Cabinet.

the hard copy of what Obama's father (PhD Harvard and Economist) wrote is here: http://www.politico.com/static/PPM41_eastafrica.html

the very same things that this Harvard Man predicted about the failure of the devpt model came to pass. he was reduced to pati pati by the fathers and grandfathers of some of the people on this board.

And am sure all you good people who told him he was dreaming and should stick to Kenyan politics (actually I thionk the words used was gutter politics, but I could be wrong)have also clean forgotten.

Then there was the earlier post which you PKW rubbished and told us a lot about what you know about American politics.

  9. World welcomes Obama win
    By JILL LAWLESS

LONDON (AP) — Excitement about Barack Obama emerged as a global phenomenon Wednesday as commentators and citizens around the world welcomed the news that he had sealed the Democratic presidential nomination.

The excitement was less about Obama's foreign policies — which remain vague on many fronts — than a sense that the candidacy of a black American with relatives in Africa and childhood friends in Asia marks a historic moment.

Michael Cox, a professor of international relations at the London School of Economics, said Obama's win "has sent out a lot of positive signals around the world."

"He has a very appealing persona — elegant, fluent, strings lots of sentences together into paragraphs," Cox said. "But in terms of (his) actual policies towards the Middle East, Iraq, Iran, China, Europe — actually, we don't know."

In Kenya, home to Obama's family on his father's side, the Kenya Times newspaper devoted its front page to Obama's victory, under the headline "Obama makes history."

"I've just watched him on television, and as a family we are very happy. Really, it is something that is a trendsetter," the politician's uncle, Said Obama, told The Associated Press from the port city of Kisumu in western Kenya.

Indonesians were rooting for the man they consider to be a hometown hero. Obama lived in the predominantly Muslim nation from age 6 to 10 with his mother and Indonesian stepfather and was fondly remembered by former teachers and classmates.

"He was an average student, but very active," said Widianto Hendro Cahyono, 48, who was in the same third-grade class as Obama at SDN Menteng elementary school in Jakarta. "He would play ball during recess until he was dripping with sweat.

"I never imagined he would become a great man."

In Mexico City, hairdresser Susan Mendoza's eyes lit up when she learned Obama had clinched the nomination.

"Bush was for the elite. Obama is of the people," she said.

The German government's coordinator on U.S. relations, Karsten Voigt, said many Germans "find (Obama's) mixture of Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy very attractive."

In an editorial, the Times newspaper of London said Obama's campaign "has rekindled America's faith in its prodigious powers of reinvention — and the world's admiration for America."

Obama opposed the invasion of Iraq and has called for an early troop withdrawal. He also has shown willingness to engage in dialogue with Iran, North Korea and Cuba — nations long isolated by the policies of Bush.

"He seems to be a peace lover," said Ngo Van Hung, a Vietnamese real-estate salesman. "He would have a better understanding of how to treat people of different nationalities and different countries."

A Chinese scholar said that while he did not expect major changes in U.S. foreign policy, an Obama White House would have a very different tone to a Bush one.

"He will bring new energy into America's domestic politics and foreign policies," said Zhu Feng, deputy director at the Center of International and Strategic Studies at Peking University in Beijing. "It's a good choice for the Democrats."

Obama, however, has made himself unpopular in Pakistan by saying the United States should act alone on information about terrorist targets within the country's national borders, leading some to believe he will not be any different from Bush.

"Obama has threatened attacks against us even before becoming the president, and he will be more dangerous compared to Bush," said Ibrar Ahmad, 34, a lecturer at the Government College in Multan.

Associated Press writers around the world contributed to this report.

  10. I think we all agree that there are many who are not particularly ecstatic with Obama's successes. It's therefore pretty obvious that his security detail has been quadrupled at the presumption of his nomination as the guy to face McCain.

It's thus not far fetched to imagine that his closer relatives within the US (and Hawaii) will shortly be enjoying varied degrees of secret service protection.

I digress. Even with the knowledge that an Obama presidency may not benefit Kenyans immensely, most of us are indeed proud of our 'son' (as we should be). I doubt we will see American funded first class hospitals and six lane highways if our 'son' makes it, however, our international appeal/status will likely get a boost. The US is not going to allow the likes of Kibaki to continue embarrassing the country where the US president's father was born and bred. In fact Kenya could use Obama's successes as leverage….where's the Foreign Affairs/ Tourism ministries? I hope they are strategizing to take advantage of such an eventuality; no matter how improbable. That said, will Kenya be sending an officail delegation to the DNC?

Back to security. Is the current Kenyan administration working with the US to ensure the security of Obama's relatives in Kenya? Based on the fact that Kenya may indeed slightly benefit from an Obama presidency, is it not prudent to post a few APs in that Nyanza village?

  12. Congratulations to OBAMA!!!

He won both the hearts and minds of the American people, and he did it with class!

I urge Phil and others not to minimize Obama's achievements by comparing him to RAO/ODM. Today is not the day to equate Obama to Raila, a man who has specialised in tribal warlordship.

Raila tried to win by dividing people into friendly tribes and enemy tribes. He tried to awaken fears in some tribes by talking about imaginary domination by "kabila adui yetu." He tried shamelessly to piggyback on Obama by displaying their photo together at the JKI airport. He was a pitiful sight; he ended looking like a nursery boy showing off his photo with the school headmaster. Worse, he tried to extract sympathy from voters by endlessly complaining that some tribe was refusing to vote for him because he was a kihii. That is when majority of the Kenyan voters said enough is enough and voted for Kibaki. The rest is history.

In style and substance, Obama is in a class of his own even by superpower presidential politics. Not a single day did Obama dwell on his racial background or appeal for votes based on race. He never talked of friendly and enemy voters. Instead he presented his life as a narrative of hope; a black boy raised by a single mother with the help of his white grandparents who defied all the odds by daring to hope and dwelling on the brighter side of life. As a young man he traced his roots back to Kenya, the land of his father. Other young men in such circumstances would have been bitter that their father had abandoned them as babies and would never have bothered with the roots of such fathers.

But Obama is different. He has avoided playing the cynical and bitter politics of victimhood often practiced by African Americans. Through the audacity of hope he has cast himself as a universal man. He is not asking for equality of races in America he is asking for post-racial America. That is why I ask his admirers and detractors to avoid pulling him into some tribal politics of some far off land he doesn't know much about.

So let celebrate Obama's audacity and his universal message of hope. Short of that, the least we can do is to watch and learn how the game is played at the superpower level.

MAY GOD BLESS OBAMA AS HE SEEKS TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF USA!!

  13. Change is an easy word to say but delivering the change lays the difficult task.

    ReplyDelete
  14. For those who think that Kenya has a stake in Obama's candidacy must think twice. Obama is first and last an American. he is running to be the president of USA and to look after the interests of USA and its people, period.

In his speech last night he dedicated his thanks to his white grandmother in Hawaii who raised him into a man. He conveniently forgot his other grandmother in Kenya.

Of course Obama's success is a major psychological boost to the egos of black people worldwide and Kenyans in particular. But that is where the benefits end. If there is anything extra it will come as tourist dollars when he comes to visit Kenya if/when he is the president.

Let us cheer him on but let us not forget to go and cultivate our cassavas thinking that with "our son" in White House manna will just rain on us. It wouldn't. Let us face reality, be industrious and make Kenya better on our own.

  18. Tom Joseph Mbaya died before most us on this forum today were even born. But I bet he has left a better legacy than most of the Africa leaders and all Kenyan leaders altogether. The man kenyans fondly remember as TJ was born in Rusinga island in Nyanza province. But I think he was born way too early for Kenya.
TJ never grabbed any land. Although he could have had the hole island for himself and his family. He never sent innocent people of Rusinga to look for land in other hostile areas. Yet he sent several people of Kenya for even a better endeavour out there. Mboya thought of giving the people of Kenya better thing than the land we are killing each other to day for. He chose to give Kenyans of all walks education!
While other Kenyan leaders were busy grabbing land, TJ was busy assembling Kenyans... in mean Kenyans to fliy them to America, USSR, Germany, UK etc for education.
Mboya left a much more better legacy than any other Kenyan leaders. Look at some of his product. There are thousands who benefited from his generosity but two stand out.
    1. Africa's only woman to have been award Nobel peace price. None other than our own Wangari Mathai is a beneficiary of Mboya's education policy.
    2. Barack Obama is a product of Mbaya's legacy be it by accident.
TJ was killed by an assassin's bullet but his legacy is better than those of his killers.
What about you? What is your legacy? Corruption? Tribalism?
RIP TJ you were and are a great kenyan

  27. Please do not drag the Obama name AND institution to the sewer of primitive Kenyan tribal politics. His ideals surpass the mere lusts and indulgences of lazy tribal thinkers like those on this blog who see him merely as a fellow Luo. How pathetic, even comparing him to Master conman Raila Odinga.
Raila claimed on BBC that Obama was his cousin only for the Obama campaign to deny it. Raila is the same buffoon who went on a two year odyssey of tribal demonization only for his ambitions to come a cropper. Change for Raila means changing one set of tribalist hyenas and scavengers with his own set of tribalist mbwa mwitus and maggots.
Obama is way beyond anything Raila and many ODMers could ever become or understand. Raila probably should try comparing himself to P.Diddy, they suffer the same ego demons.
Obama is something Raila could never be in 1000 lifetimes, a Uniter, NOT a primitive divider, and his ideas have and will continue to resonate with millions of all persuasions worldwide.

  28. Hate or is it loosing that produces interesting behaviour in people.....there are people who believe for their own convenience that RAO lost the election....my oh my...RAO is now a kikuyu hater..the very same RAO who declared kibaki tosha...the same RAO whoes father called kibaki from makerere to come help build the nation, whoes father started the no uhuru without kenyatta....mindless hate....or is it just the bitterness of loosing. There has always been haterade of luos by many kenyans....at the coast mjaluo is a derogatory term. One kamba friend once told me that the reason he would never vote a luo is caues a luo president would force everyone to wear a tie....africans are we incapable of reason?
It obviously pains some people that America thinks otherwise.....
It has been said before and i will say it again all tribes voted for kibz in 2002 hoping that he will unite us....well soon as he went there he made it a kuyo government now RAO the very person who got him there in the fast place is to blame for people disliking him. they guy simple screwed up all fronts......
It is the kuyos and i have evidence who went about telling all who cared to listen home and abroad that it was their turn, they were the dominant tribe...and all manner of balderdash RAO said none of that
    kuyos invited hate to themselves
now they use RAO as a scape goat obviously Obama's success hurts them big time cause they more than anybody else thinks along tribal lines......Obama may be luo but other prominent luos have proven that they may not blindly follow the tribeline....tuju,ouko,..

Ask any kenyan if Obam was a kikuyu its almost a given that he would meddle in kenyan politics..every kenyan knows that instinctively.

What about Tom Morello, a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist who was born in New York to an part Irish and part Italian mother and a Kikuyu father called Ngethe Njoroge. His great-uncle is Jomo Kenyatta, our first president. Tom mother Mary Morello is the founder of Parents for Rock and Rap, an anti-censorship group. Tony is also famous for roles in star trek and iron man films.

I am not trying to start a new Luo/Kikuyu war here, but it would be nice if we all shun tribalism and celebrate Kenyan achievements wherever it is, giving praise wherever is due. We have the capability to set a paradigm for the whole of Africa. But these tribal jokes will only drag us behind.

  38. Talking about Tom Morello: His mother met his father Ngethe Njoroge before Independence in Kenya. They got married in Nairobi and later moved to New York where Tom was born. Ngethe Njoroge was Kenya's first Ambassador to the UN and a brother of Dr. Njoroge Mungai, Kenya first Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mary Morello got involved in many Human Rights Groups and is a well-known political figure in the States. Tom Morello studied in Harvard Political Science and finished with flying colours. He became a world-renowned musician and still is. Besides that he worked together with his mother on Human Rights Issues and was awarded the Eleonor Roosevelt Price in 2006. Besides, he is a friend of Barrack Obama and a great supporter of his campaign. And just like Obama, also Tom did not visit his relatives in Kenya until he was grown-up and like Obama he has not much contact with his Kenyan father since also his parents divorced when he was still a small boy. Like Obama he also grew up in a white family - so you see, the two have a lot in common.

  40. Funny forward- for those with asense of humour- he he he.....

Barrack Obama is not the first famous Kenyan to have made it in the US , but he might be the only one who retained his Kenyan name while many others Americanized theirs. Here is a sample of those kenyans who made it big in the US but changed their names to become more "American."

They include: Clarence Carter, Billy Ocean , Barry White & Otis Redding. Alicia Keys real name is Alice Akinyi, & then we have Billy Ochieng, who changed his name to Billy Ocean once he hit the American shores; & Otis Redding whose real name is Otieno Rading, comes from Kisumu. Brian Mc Night Note was Brian Mac Otieno & they are all Luos.

There may be others out there, but these are the few who came to my mind immediately. Something common with these Kenyans is that they were/are great musicians. If they went into politics like Obama, perhaps they would have to retain their Kenyan tags. If they were preachers, they would have changed their names minimally like Martin Oludhe King who changed to Martin Luther King & T.D Jaoko who became T. D. Jakes.
