Update by Chris

What Is Going On?

The first question Kenyans must ask themselves is why two cabinet ministers were riding in the same plane. Basic common sense tells you that you never do that.

Somebody needs to answer that question before we discuss anything else about the death of the two ministers earlier today.

Still what has happened has happened and cannot be reversed. The right approach now is to remain calm as we await answers.

My hope is that the ministers did not die in vain and that Kenyans will now wake up to the full implications of the Kibaki succession and what it entails, knowing our politicians and those who make money from politics.

Update: 20h05 Kenya Time

Raila has read condolences on behalf of the ODM. Raila was flanked by the ODM top brass including, Ruto, Ntimama, Mudavadi and others.

ODM is urging it supporters to remain calm.

The party is also saying the by-elections scheduled for tomorrow should not be postponed and that wananchi should come out it large numbers to vote for ODM candidates.

Update: 20h30 Kenya Time

ODM top brass, reeling from the shocking tragedy, are reported to be locked in closed-door meeting. A statement is expected later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Some party officials have been dispatched to go and console the families of the deceased ministers.

The ODM statement is expected to shed more light about the ministers' ill fated trip and also about the condition of the aircraft which this blogger has been informed has been previously chartered for campaign purposes by ODM officials, actually as recently as this past weekend.

Update: 21h00

Bodies of the deceased are still lying at the crash site nearly eight hours after the crash. A parliamentary committee led by Hon. William Ruto has been set up by government and are expected to accompany a high powered government security team that is expected to travel to Narok early tomorrow morning to commence investigations and retrieve the bodies of the ministers.

Do you know who planned to be at Wilson on hired plane leo heading for Kericho??

*** Original plans was some certain MP's to meet at Wilson headed to Kericho and just go hand shaking to show unity. plans were shelved Mon evenign for a different approach.

    certain MP from Eldoret
    certain MP from Langata
    certain MP from Sabatia
    certain MP from Kitui
    certain MP from Mombasa

plans changed at last minute. that is why the certain people are badly shaken. somebody (unknown tribal forces) in govt wants to maliza kabisa.

    ReplyDelete
  21. were RAO and Ida supposed to be on that plane? or any other pentagon member? even tragedy is now selective just like justice has been served selectively against ODM

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anon @ 8.33... if members of the Pentagon were to be on that flight and they changed their plans at the last minute and the plane has gone and crashed killing all on board, then that explains why there has been no word coming from them (they must be extremely shaken to say the least) and also no word from the government - almost 5 hours later - they must be guilty as hell! This is TOO MUCH!

  23. What are the chances that STRAY BULLERS and HELICOPTER CRASHES only meet one side of the political divide? What are the ODDs of that happening?

Some of us observers here are not fools you know. Phil is miles ahead in his analysis of Kenya. All some of us do is read between the lines, cross analyze with future scenarios and we conclude.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How could they shelve the plans and not let others know? That's fishy too. The Kipsigis should cut off ties with ODM and their dirty tricks. They were short changed in government appointments, and now this!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Those who shelved plans did so to do another strategy approach. Focus was to be moved to Wajir as Ainamoi had become secure in terms of votes. Everybody knew plans changed. But I think what the NSIS person is saying, whomever (if there was any) carried this heineous maintenance-rigging act was not informed that the PRIME targets they wanted were not going to be on board. Is this not what PHIL said indirecctly 10 days ago. PHIL, you must be privy to very sensitive information on what was going to happen. Somebodies were to be stopped before they make an important trip abroad where it would become clear who the powers that be side with. Fill the blanks!

  26. This government of national unity should be disbanded immediately and fresh elections called... The current state of affairs cannot be expected to continue like this indefinitely! Some people will stop at nothing to achieve absolute power. WASHINDWE!

  29. Guys,i know emotions are high and that nerves are on the egde, but lets remember one thing, moments like these will make or break our mnation.
Someone warned that the Annan brokered peace would not last and that only God would bring lasting peace in kenya.
Many of us have clearly sneered at such remarks but you never can tell.
So,if just a few of u who understand what am trying to say can just say a silent prayer for our nation,it would be much better than spreading messages that instill suspicion and fear among Kenyans.
My condolences to the families of all those who perished in the crash.
It would be really kind to acknowledge the fact that 5 people perish and that the families of the bodyguards feel as much pain and loss as the families of the politicians do.
    God bless Kenya!

  32. PHIL does a great job here as he gives us the raw meat for us to digest. Some of us look at if on face value. Others look at it deeper and immediately see patterns and trends.

My sixth sense tells me there is maddenning paranoia at somebody's delegation heading abroad next week. Something had to be done and it was to be done at all costs.

However, those whom are in the know are probably operating always with one side open for any eventualities. In this case, it was SIR GOD who saved them.

Heartfelt condelences to those others who have been.

Now lets make one assumption. Assuming PHIL is wrong and this was not targetting the PRIME crew, then we ask this question: The Minister was responsible for which docket? This same docket is know for which shadowy characters? What did the Minister do recently that made these characters mad and poor?

Looking at it deeper, you see the patterns and intents and understand what is happening.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Its true, instead of speculating and/or rushing to judgement without a whisker of a fact, it would be appropriate to condole with the affected families.

  35. it is said that only a fool believes in coincidence

this is meant to scare ODM aspirants and MPs and cow them into submission.

it is no coincidence that kibaki said elections will be over and life is back as usual (with him at the helm) and after much trouble it has happened

it is no coincidence that kibaki said he will form a coalition govt of all parties and it has come to be

it is no coincidence that in order for PNU to garner majority in parliament ODM numbers need to be reduced through death and so far 4 ODM MPs have lost their lives through anything but natural causes.

somebody needs to tell us whats going on

    ReplyDelete
  36. @9:08, Amen to that! People need to calm down and pray for the families of everyone aboard that flight. Conspiracy theories won't take us anywhere. It is a sad day for all Kenyans.

    ReplyDelete
  37. NTV has confirmed. Just called home and got the news. The Plane Chopper had not enough FUEL to fly to Narok (15 mins by plane).

Did I not say PHIL is smart and to the point. He knows whats happening even before things take execution shape.

My question is: Will the PRIMe targets still make the trip abroad next week?

  42. anon 9:20 you are a classic imbecile

    ReplyDelete
  43. How can a mzungu trained pilot not know there was fuel. It must have been there. But what he did not expect probably was the maintenance rigging that happened. Somebody may have added water to the fuel tank or other liquid. Or someobody may have punctured a small hole which when flying would enlargen and drain most of the fuel.

    ReplyDelete
  44. the second anon 9:20, not the first, is a classic imbecile

    ReplyDelete
  45. PNU wants to rig the elections, so they assasinated ODM MPs to divert attention from Kivuitu and his team.

Kibaki is pushing ODM to the limits knowing very well that they cannot cause any violence at this crucial moment in Kenyan history.

PNU fears an ODM majority in parliament and they will do whatever it takes to prevent ODM from capturing more seats.

The aim was to kill the pentagon team as you know the govt security team knows the pentagons every move especially now that they are in the govt. Since the govt security men are in charge of security, its very easy to plot an assassination. Thats exactly what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sad day for Kenya indeed. Sincere condolences to the families of those who perished and the ODM fraternity as a whole.

I agree with you. PHIL's post some days ago is what has kept me thinking. In one of the blogs, PHIL did ask: What one single action would reduce any intense pressure from Keguoya and THE OTHERS?

He did not answer himself but left it for us to Jijazie.

Take out the ODM Pentagon, and someone in SH can sleep fofo until 2012, someone in Harambee House will have an easy succession plan, and somepeople in Treasury will eat public resources like no tomorrow.

PHIL- yours is one of the most informative sites in Kenya's political history. Kudos to you!

My theory is that the same imps that went about preaching that everyone wanted kuyos dead are not done yet........loosing leaves a bitter taste.

I have info that kuyos have been arming themselves.....someone is creating a false sense of insecurity to trigger a war.....

many thoughts go to my head......
kalooser can only be preso if kibz dies in office......and RAO is silenced.

him or should I say those that are using him may have calculated that.......Kibz is a dead horse he is already past his sell by date. A kuyo may mot make it to be president.......other leaders seem like they can change their alligence depending on what is put on the table......

Start a war RAO dies, kibz is killed in revange attack...cost is clear

Watch out for Museveni you may hear something about uganda soon.

mungiki beheading someone in eldi the heart of kales was meant to start an uprising.....

I think someone is trying to trigger people to go out and protest then like they did before use thugs/police to quell the violence.......

kenya was settling and ODM ministers are showing the difference between them and PUN loosers who have no concept of leadership or service...

Another one year of ODM service and PNU ministers would be laughing stock....they needed to do something....

Its becoming too expensive to keep some people in this country and call them our people its time to make a decision and break away before we waste our lives dealng with animals.

FACT IS, THERE WAS BAD WHEATHER AND THE PILOT DID NOT MAKE THE NECESSARY CHECK-UPS BEFORE TAKE-OFF.

  51. First of all, may I pass my sincere heartfelt condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. Poleni sana na Mungu awalaze mahali pema peponi.

Secondly, for those that are already reading sinister moves by stating that PNU caused this need to look at the various factors that.

Poor weather.- Hiyo ni self explanatory. Blame Maulana.

Sabotage.- For the last two weeks, the flights that have been leaving for Kilgoris and Wajir have had extensive pre-flight inspections carried out not only by both times (ODM and PNU) but also Wilson airport regulators. (They did not want what happened in Marsabit a few years ago to happen again).

Luck.- This doomed flight could have gone either way. With the many flights by both teams flying to those areas there was a fifty fifty chance that mkosi ukitokea, it would have either taken the ODM group or the PNU group. By the way, if you check statistics, flights are the safest mode of transport but also the most deadly in terms of fatalities. Waititu and Pasaris have higher chances of getting into a road accident than the doomed flight.

Lets not be quick to pass judgement. Let investigations be done and then we can decide based on the findings.

  52. When Raila campaigns, he does not go with Govt boadyguards.

    ReplyDelete
  53. anon 9:49

under normal circumstances that would be credible, but this govt and its leaders are not credible. and this is not beyond their scheming, plus we know that any vague or ambiguous event can go on to eternity because we do not have the diligence to conduct investigations. we are still waiting on investigations on Were and Too. a little further back we have Mugo and Ouko

its a culture of reckless impunity with only one answer, massive civil response

Kenyan minister, asst minister dead in plane crash
    10 Jun 2008 16:03:39 GMT

    (Adds details, background, bylines)
By C. Bryson Hull and Wangui Kanina

NAIROBI, June 10 (Reuters) - A Kenyan cabinet minister and assistant minister died on Tuesday along with two others in the crash of a light plane near the Masai Mara game reserve, officials said.

Roads Minister Kipkalya Kones, 56, and Assistant Minister for Home Affairs Lorna Laboso, 47, were aboard the plane with a pilot and a security guard, a spokesman for their party said.

"I am confirming that they were on the plane that crashed. I am not confirming that they are dead, but the police are confirming that all aboard died," Orange Democratic Movement party spokesman Salim Lone said.

Narok District police boss Patrick Wambani said all four people in the plane died. There was no immediate confirmation for the cause of the crash in a remote area called Kojonga.

"The plane came down on an unoccupied house and disintegrated, killing all four occupants," Wambani told Reuters in Narok, 120 km (75 miles) west of the capital Nairobi.

In Nairobi, police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said the names of Kones and Laboso were on the flight manifest.

Both politicians were members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, which had opposed President Mwai Kibaki and advocated public protests after he won a disputed re-election in December.

The vote sparked Kenya's worst violence since independence from Britain in 1963, and deal to end the political impasse brought ODM into a coalition government with Kibaki's Party of National Unity alliance.

Kones is a five-term member of parliament and was first elected in 1988, after a career as a teacher and manager at a produce firm. He has held several other ministries throughout his public career.

Laboso is a first-term legislator, who has campaigned against the cultural practice of female genital mutilation in her Kipsigis tribe.

After a career as a secretary and accountant, she got her university degree in communications last year. You must be a foreigner to "Kenyan affairs" here they do not do investigations to esablish any findings, if that is your argument, explain where the findings on; JM Kariuki, Pio Gama Pinto, Ouko, Bishop Okullu, Father Kaizer, Josephat Karanja, Mugabe were, Too of Ainamoi to name just a few are? Even after their very suspicious deaths we are still awaiting those ELUSIVE conclusive findings!!
Please get your facts right, thats OLD SCHOOL, DICTATORIAL, KAZI IENDELEE kind of nonsense that Kenyans have known for almost 50 years.

    Your argument is highly erroneous.
P.s, if really we had a credible justice system, why would the same man expected to investigate electoral disputes, swear in an individual even before all objections of the election are adressed, which is what the constitution demands, funny the same individual in-charge of the courts breaks that very same law he is to uphold.

Again, your argument holds no water!!!

  63. I don't know about Kones, but Lorna deserves to be moaned. The name Kones reminds me of one of the architects of the 1992 RV tribal crashes and the patron saint of the cowboy contractors at the height of Moi's lunacy. Anyway I leave it there since I don't want to be seen as beating up on a dead person. I leave the beating and laughing to TAABU who specializes in laughing at helpless and dead Kenyans (especially the IDPs).

May Lorna's soul rest in peace!

  64. When kales burnt kuyos in eldi the munguki did not engage them there instead they went for luos in Naivasha.
It seems to me that after '82 fiasco MO1 made sure he had enough kales in strategic positions in the military. So an outright war between kuyos and kales would have easily gone one way or would be too expensive to win. as in causualties would be too high to make the fight worthwhile.

That anger has not subsided and this may be some sort of clever revange attack. Finish them silently.

The way kuyos were caught by suprise by the kale attacks goes to show that initially they had underestimated them. Thats why kibzs ruthlessly kicked them out of jobs given by Mo1.

They wrongly concentrated their efforts in kisumu based on their usual misplaced self created imaginary enemies the luos.

This is what happens when you base your modus operendi on a lie. You find yourself at the wrong place barking up the wrong tree.

The price you pay for dishonesty and failure to see the truth even when it stands infront of you and slaps you in the face.

According to their intelligence they wanted to face off with RAO thinking kenyans were too tribal to vote a luo....turns out only them and some kaos are the only remaining tribal neanderthals.

Seems to me they think they are now ready for a war with everyone. They have plan. have you noticed that while ODM seems to have taken the plough and gone to the garden PNU is still smarting over silly thing like who is who is more supriour and what the heck is orengo doing with land.......
They are getting ready for something they cant sit the arses for a few minutes to do some service to keyans....whats their problem?

    Sir Alex

  66. This is exactly why sensible kenyans, i.e ODM was against the return of IDPs' without proper resolutions & structures.

Word on the street; Rift valley is extremely tense at this moment. A blogger here has just mentioned some "arming" going on after a recent beheading of a pastor, lord rest his soul, by mungiki in Eldoret. IDP'S SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN FORCED BACK TO THEIR HOMES, UNDER THIS CIRCUMSTANCES.

  68. All my optimism for this coalition is gone. In good time, I'm 100% sure the Kales will return the favor. And when they do, the political calculus will shift and swing hard. 72. If it turns out to be anything other than an accident, it will then be an ODM inside job. Begin by asking, "Whose interest do such deaths immediately serve (if indeed they are planned deaths)?" My honest take on this is as follows: You can see already the tread here at Kumekucha of trying to blame the deaths on Kikuyus. The Kipsigis in ODM were beginning to fight for their rightful share of cabinet positions after they were short-changed by Raila. They were even talking of shopping for a party other than ODM to join. The anti-Kikuyu glue in ODM was beginning to be overshadowed by intra-party betrayals. Faced with that emergency the question became: How do the pentaGOONS rope the Kipsigis back in the bossom of the ODM? Just do what has worked before - do some mischief on Kipsigis leaders and then blame it on the Kikuyus. And voila! ODMites are already talking of potential violence by Kalenjins on Kikuyus in the RV. If this turns out to be true, then we need a national programme to civilize the pentaGOONS. It appears human life means nothing to these people!!!

I will pass my TRULLY heartfelt condoloscence to the families and friends of these two leaders. It is unfortunate that we are losing leaders and Kenyans for that matter at an amazingly high rate. May God grant comfort and strength to the berieved.

That said, this stupid characteristic ODM DOMO needs to stop. Why would anybody in this world want to kill Lorna Laboso? We need to pray that God is with us all the time and repent AS A NATION of anything we may have done to warrant this. It has absolutely nothing to do with ODM. These are not ODM Mps that are dying, these are fathers, husbands, mothers, wives, friends and loved ones. I do not understand the relevance of their party affiliations.
It reminds me of 2003 when the President was in bad health and close friends of his like Ahmed Khalif, geoffrey Parpai, michael wamalwa and Karisa Maitha died. In addition to these Joab Omino, JP Mutiso and other Narc legislators died. Were they being assasinated by Moi? We need not shout like brainless goons.

Are you kenyan ama you have just dropped from mars?

This is a blog probaly none of us is here is a trained investigator or even if someone was they may not be at the scene to determine cause of death.

What we can do here is speculate on all the likely scenarios and unless your just too tired to think, or to blinded by you affection to PNU you must admit that they are likey suspects.

Dimissing them before they are cleared is just as wrong as shooting them without evidence.

But you must allow us to investigate and think aloud as to the possibilities it scalled brain storming....hoping you have one.

Unless you have eveidence to prove otherwise anyone can be suspect.

Pretending to cry and sympathise does not a case make.

Somehow you list of dead has avoided Tom mboya, JMK. Fr, kaiser,Ouko......

Selective.....are you also for selective justice?

My feeling is that Wamalwa could have been killed too.....

Investigators must first have a hunch the follow it. In other word the must first assume that so and so did it and work by elimination.

Even our clever doctore have to do that.

They just become better and fasters at guessing.

Someone in your family owes me for educating you.....some people are giving us too much work..

I dont see what the connection with PNU might be. In fact, it is likely Raila (who has absolutely no respect for human life) who did this heinous thing. Just think about it, he was faced and is faced with massive strife among the Kipsigis, whose support for ODM was not trivial. Rather than face a massive defection, Raila decided to derail that for a while. But its coming. This is the last straw for the Kipsigis and they are moving en masse back to KANU. Just you wait and see.

Its funny how some people are sure its not PNU and then speculate that it could be RAO....

AT least don't be sure its not PNU it shows your thinking or at least have a brain.

    THEY COULD HAVE DONE IT!!!!!!

makes you wonder if that was not the plan. kill them and then blame RAO.
Another brainless PNU scheme you constanlty miss read RAO thats why he beats you all the time.

If I was an investigator looking into this thing the first thing I would consider is what has been RAOs reaction been when faced with dissent? he simply lets it run its course then regroups.

His attacking style is alwayas a tack tical retreat than a tsunami.

    Did it with project uhuru.
Did it with MOU, did it with Kalooser ODM-K. So far the kisigis revolt was not even in full gear.
there has been noise before but it never amounted to much.

However 'premptive' klling is a PNU mt kenya style. from Were. mbai, down to JM. Those are my prime suspects.

dont even get drawn into that PNU crap

first off if you criticize PNU its said you are demonizing kikuyu,

but if you say PNU is a tribal party they tell you its national and then mention Wetangula.

if Kibaki is queried, you are demeaning kikuyu, if you say kibaki is a tribal president, they come up stories of 21 million votes and counting.

its pointless to engage these guys
