Jeers At Uhuru Park For Kibaki A Mere Sign Of Things To Come

For the first time in the history of the motherland a sitting President of the Republic of Kenya was booed and jeered loudly at a public function! Yesterday, during the Labour Day celebrations President Kibaki was on the receiving end of loud jeers and grumbling, even as some wananchi walked away throwing their arms angrily in the air at him.

Trouble started when the President tried to explain to the people why announcing a salary increment for those in the minimum wage bracket would be impossible. He was reacting to loud calls from the crowd at the end of his speech, that he say something about minimum wages. It was too much for the crowd to take and loud voices of discord and grumbling echoed Uhuru Park where the function was being held. In my view this was but a minor sign of terrible things to come.

It is one thing to steal an election but it is quite another to handle some rather unique problems now emerging that are just crying out for a fresh pair of legs (see the latest raw notes to find out the evidence that the NSIS has which proves that President Kibaki did NOT win the elections).

The President quite rightly explained why considering the current situation in the country, it was impossible for the government to raise the minimum wages. Excellent economics but poor politics. Later the Labour Minister John Munyes, obviously under instructions from the President called a press conference to announce that the government will be naming a committee today to look into the issue of minimum wages in the country (an old trick to deal with a deadly new unique problem).

Actually the whole problem is much more serious than most people realize. As you read this, the world is on the verge of what will perhaps be the biggest crisis ever witnessed for many decades. World food prices are dangerously spiraling out of control and experts predict that within the next 6 months prices will multiply many times upwards. In Kenya's case , things have been made a lot worse by the crisis created by post election violence. That puts the country in very grave danger. Indeed even before the worldwide food crisis had emerged, experts were already warning of looming famine in the country. This is a problem that has the capability of wiping out the current government and crop of politicians from existence.

When you consider the fact that we have already seen serious food riots in many nations across the world ranging from Cameroon to distant Haiti, then you will swiftly realize that the grumblings heard at Uhuru Park yesterday were a mere symptom. This is one lesson retired President Moi knew very well. And that is you can govern the masses and use all sorts of tactics to get away with stuff, but hungry people are deadly, unpredictable and totally ungovernable. Just try and go hungry yourself for a few days and see what happens. Studies have shown that humans become nothing short of animals when threatened by hunger and indeed there are many tales of humans turned into cannibals by hunger right down history. And by the way the last thing you want to do is deal with force (as the Kibaki regime loves to do at the least excuse) with hungry people.

Interestingly, this is one lesson President Mugabe of Zimbabwe is bound to learn a little late in the day. The official results clearly show that there is need for a re-run of the presidential elections in that country. The thing which will continue to puzzle Mugabe for many years is how a President who has distributed land to tens of thousands of peasants can lose an election. The answer is pretty simple. The people of Zimbabwe are going hungry!

Clearly this is one challenge that the current crop of dinosaur-age politicians are ill equipped to handle as the idea of the formation of the minimum wage committee clearly shows in a country where there are way too many committees who come up with recommendations that are neatly filed away and continue to gather dust only for the next administration to form more committees to duplicate the same reports already gathering dust in government archives.

P.S. Yet another crisis is looming in the near horizon as the government started a forceful re-settlement of IDP’s in the Rift Valley this morning. The operation is being handled by the largest police operation in the history of the country. The idea is to re-settle people under heavy police guard. Chances are high that this could trigger fresh violence because many members of the Kalenjin community who took over farms from IDPs have already planted and it will be interesting to see if they will just quietly and meekly walk away from it all. Rift Valley MPs have clearly protested any plan to quickly re-settle IDPs without thoroughly looking into the underlying root problems of the crisis in the first place.

  1. You had a great article about hunger and its effects on the politics of the day, but you add- on on forceful resettlement steals the thunder. Hunger we know its coming more because of biofuel. iraq and americans appetite for anything oil. With it fertilizers, transport etc Climate change and desertification that THREATENS KENYAN - than anyother country on and under the equator.

On IDPs . Chris your article has very serious connotations for the future of Kenya. You mean the Kalenjins took over the land, planted and are waiting to harvest. Land that they do not own. Now this is what will call for the distengration of Kenya further. Methinks, and i do not hail from lesotho or riftvalley if the resettlemnt does not take place in RV the implications in Nairobi will be so dire that i may not contemplate and more so with security that is not guaranteed. Can get munigiki or the thugs from rv. I for one believe the current goings on in politics have united the kikuyu so much that am worried by their silence. They now hate kibaki with equal measure and dont care a hoot about the old man, it will be worse if a kikuyu died today in new clashes. The rsolve from my informants has reached a boiling point. Ikiwa ni mbaya ni mbaya - this is the call gaining ground. It will only happen over their dead bodies this time round. This is a community i guess other Kenyans are now taking for granted.

I live and work in Muranga and i get on well with these guys - but to them Raila is not the enemy. The enemy is ruto - he has shed their blood. My fear is that sooner than later and with the incites we are getting from Rao he is ready to go bed with the kyuks and there comes in the dillema - what happens to Ruto and his warmongers.

Resettlemengt should be done in orderly manner but rift valley MPS should realise on this one - they are alone. Rao and the international community are slowly distancing themselves from the hardline stance. Most people are wondering whey do we from nyanza live with no threat in muranga and thika and not the rest in rift valley. And all are affected, even luos in kerich had their businesses burnt too.

  2. They have the guts to pay useless MP's as much as 15,000 dollars a month, which is like a US senators salary, and to have the biggest cabinet in the whole world and they cant add a few shillings to the salaries of workers who pay them and who run the economy.

That is kenyan politicians for you, brutal, ruthless and criminal!!

  3. Anon 5:36....Ruto again. FACTS or FICTION!!! Let us not go there. The problem is not the riftvalley Mps, kwani how much land do they own? The problem is the people of RV their MPs are only their mouthpiece......When did RAO stop being their enemy? in 2007 were they the ones who were bashing the man left right and centre? Where was Ruto then? Thank you got that piece of well investigated writting...It could only come from CSI...Thank you. I am scared...Duh

  5. Chris,

I am not surprised that people booed the mp for othaya, I wish I was there myself to do it!

By the way, when you say this is a sign of things to come what do you mean? Clearly we have progressed since the days of baba na mama one party rule, such things were an abomination!! So I ask, do you mean that now that we have permission to boo, as a sign of things to come, next time we will be allowed to throw stones at him? I can't wait!!

Kusema kweli Kenya government inachekesha!! Just the other day wananchi were clamouring for a lean cabinet...they got teargassed for heavens sake for asking for such a thing!! That time no one mentioned any economic theories...but now when its time for the wananchi to also be appeased...the government remembers the prevailing circumstances and starts spitting economic theory nonsense on us (yes nonsense)!!

One thing I know Chris, is that resettling IDPs there by force will not work at all!! Kalenjins will not take it lying down just as you said and we are probably going to witness worse chaos in the riftvalley than we did last time. By the way does Kibaki still think he can rule by force...ati heavy police guard? Those IDPs will be thrown out of those lands so fast they wont know what hit them!!(Please do not accuse me of hate speech...am speaking the truth!!) Will he continue to provide heavy police guard for members of his community for the next 50 years, the next 100 years? Land issues and all those historical injustices should be addressed sensitively and appropriately! These tactics of his will just cause more enemity between his people and others.

Kibaki is seriously in a mental league of his own...wacha aendelee na "oh yes....oh yes.....oh yes" zake!! Everyone knows some people got those lands for free and others bought them cheaply under cooperatives mzee kenyatta is the cause of their problems they should look into his lands for their resettlements-again the truth(no hate speech).

You know what people, just the same way Kibaki did not steal the presidency to give it back on a silver platter...I dont think the Kalenjins chased immigrants so that they could be resettled "on their land" four months later...not unless people want IDPs back in these circumstances again by the end of this year ama when elections are next held! That is the bitter truth.

I 100% agree with you, I am a Kyuk and I can say with confidence a vast number of Kikuyus do not have issues with Raila. According to many young Kyuks, they believe Raila played a major role in ending Moi autocratic and authoritarian rule and thus Raila should have been rewarded with a premiership in 2003. They also believe Kikuyus and Luos suffered under Moi on equal measures and thus Luos should have been given greater autonomy in the previous govt. As for Ruto don't even go there...they hate him with passion.

kikuyu`s are fools- the propaganda for Ruto you can read in the PNU master plan which was written even before the burning of the charge happened- read the date on the document- i ask you how did the PNU know that their was going to be genocide in Rift valley even before it happened!! the PNU master plan was written On December 28th 2007n before they made the announcement that kibaki had won!!in there it states blame Ruto for the ethnic cleansing in the Rift Valley- can any KIkuyu explain that discrepancy to me!!

I repeat again Ruto is leader in the rift valley and kikuyu`s can accept that or remove themselves and go to Lesotho!!the last time i saw the IDP`s are in the Rift Valley not central and every other tribes would wish them in central Lesotho!! get facts on Ruto or shut up!!

again watch what you say - kikuyu because you make other kenyans hate you this burning passion-

Ruto is not a kikuyu business- you can say all you want- do you really think the rest of kenya cares if kikuyu`s do not like Ruto!!! to hell- we love him to death and i`m from western province- Ruto is a man!! not a rubbish like your thieving kibaki- KIKUYU`s can see Ruto is a force the reckon with a guy who took down MOI!! so again you can shout from Mt. 35. If the IDPs are resettled in RV, the Kalenjin plan on doing a repeat of what they did earlier this year.

The Kikuyu will not take it lying down. They are planning, quietly and strategically, training and arming. They have sworn that if "their people" are attacked, they will fight back - hard. As one mentioned, Kikuyu are not quick to fight, but once they get started, it is a sustained aggression.

There is a reason why Njenga Karume is courting the Mungiki leader. Njenga has access to the govt. and to the kikuyu masses. If the government cant protect his people, the people themselves will. Talk to kikuyu men, it is obvious the pain they feel for "their people" living in camps, being rained on, infants being born and dying in the cold. Children catching all manner of diseases. And yet, all they did was buy a couple of acres from someone who wanted to sell in order to send their kids to school or whatever.

The kale know this, and have been training and arming too.

The kikuyu must be resettled in RV, otherwise we'll be living in a jungle where the laws apply selectively.

The Kale must be willing to invite the kikuyu back to resettle among them. And I don't know how you do that. We all heard about the Njirongo story of inviting back some kikuyu lady whose house had been burnt, helping rebuild and donating cattle.........

Oh, and for those in denial, yes the Kikuyu youth (read: mungiki) voted for ODM. Kibaki and crew have been killing them like rodents. Why would they want him back?

    Mambo bado.

  36. Did anyone notice that while Kibaki was being booed, Raila was off to Deutschland for eye surgery and then flew right over Kenya to SA for holiday "where his children would join him"? At our expense. Its no wonder the American Govt. found it necessary to fund his office. With all these personal expenses, he is going to need the additional budgetary support.

So much for the "people's president or PM".

Along the same line, did anyone notice the blip in the news about blending ethanol with petrol? Who owns the largest ethanol producer - The Odinga Family. And who are their partners? The south Africans. And don't get me started on the demerits of ethanol in energy content and opportunity cost.

Dude: The coalition govt. is a dinner party and those invited will be competing with Mittal on the billionaire list before the next elections.

  37. Raila is a real visionary and that's why he's denouncing Kalenjin war monger MPs. He knows that attacking Kikuyus in their NORTH RIFT homes will only bring attacks on innocent Luos in the sprawling Kibera and Mathare slums.

That's because Kalenjins are almost invincible outside their North Rift ancestral homes. Personally I have no problem at all with Kikuyus DEFENDING themselves by any means necessary against Kalenjin warriors even by use of primitive and savage attacks.

Who would just sit and not hit back against uncivilized land grabbers who also relish raping innocent women amid their mayhem? Kalenjin warriors should know that any Kenyan has a constitutional right to settle anywhere in this God given country.

Those against that right should be obliterated from the planet as fast as possible even if a gangster's "gonna bust a cap" on them.

  42. Back to the post at hand re: minimum wage. How about a bill sponsored in Parliament to raise the minimum wage once the govt recovers from its cash crunch? Or maybe slash that cabinet in half or more, do away with Asst. Ministers, slash cabinet salaries, MPs perks and we'll find billions to plug the holes in a flash! Why another commission that's going to waste money the govt doesn't already have, only for its recommendations to be filed away on some shelf?? If there's no money to raise the wage then there shouldn't be any to set up a commission.

To those devastated by the Odinga family vacationing in SA: It doesn't cost $777 million or whatever the figure was from Anglo Fleecing to do so. Point is your priorities! The family has owned a business since 1971 despite the common belief that they only saw millions in their accounts when NDP merged with Kanu. Anyone who's been in business that long, especially one that's a quasi regional monopoly making gas cylinders (I'm not talking about the molasses plant so don't sprout that herring on me) can afford to vacation anywhere on this earth....and this is not the first time they've gone on vacation outside Kenya. On the other hand if we find out that this vacation was paid for with tax payer funds then of course it must be exposed and addressed ASAP! Until then, let's stop the Clintonesque side shows and distractions when the issue at hand is a broke govt that can't raise the minimum wage but justifies a bloated cabinet which allegedly had no impact on the treasury.

Chicity I second you brother, by the way weren't they espousing and flaunting 6-7% economic growth, on the other hand Wetangula is calling US Ambassador 'junior officer', he needs to have a side bar with Karua. NSE is "not a fish market" says Kimunya. These PaNUA's make me sick, they cannot see or reason beyond their noses. They need to buckle up, its going to be a bumpy ride folks, a lot of turbulence forcasted. Now they want Raila to help them settle IDP's, yet five months ago he was "kih**" and "unelectable." By the way, sorry for the rant, but if I was one of Raila's advisors, he should not tag along with Kibs and Kalooser, let us see if they can even dare set foot in any part of Kenya apart from Central and Eastern, and that protocoll mess sorts itself out.

  50. Lets be truthful and ashame the devil, central province is for kikuyus only and the rest of kenya is for all tribes including the kikuyus.

Thats what kikuyus want when they say any kenyan can hold land anywhere and that is what kenyans are saying no to. Its simple really.

  54. It would seem reasonable to observe that we have reached a stage where the convenience of the select is the first consideration and the welfare of the masses a secondary consideration.
