Political Games Being Played In New Cabinet

Kenyans finally have a cabinet in place. However nobody has popped the champagne yet. In fact what is rapidly emerging amongst most Kenyans all over the world is deep exhaustion when it comes to Kenyan politics these days. Very telling was the fact that the wild celebrations that one would have expected from Kisumu did NOT happen.

Just thinking about the twists and turns in Kenyan politics since last December makes many Kenyans feel very tired. But as our very own mwalimu likes to say; na bado.

One of two things will happen next. Either Ali Baba and his 41 thieves will eat in bliss and you will not hear a sound because when thieves know too much about each other, they fear each other. Or alternatively we are about to be treated to endless squabbling, turf wars and all sorts of clownish activity. Most analysts agree that there is no option “C”

Sigh. Just thinking about it makes even me feel very tired.

There are a few things that have clearly emerged from the coalition cabinet named yesterday. For instance, the dominance of Kenyan politics by one tribe continues. There is no doubt that the Prime Minister’s office will wield immense powers despite what skeptics say. That means that the deputy Prime Ministers will be fairly powerful people and will no doubt overshadow even the vice presidency which has just become an even weaker office that it was previously. It beats logic how the president of Kenya can hail from the Kikuyu tribe and then have one of the deputy prime ministers hail from the same tribe. That does not augur well for the country, period. It is instructive that all the front runners for deputy premiership from PNU were from that single tribe. In fact this is the big weakness with PNU that many people have not seen. The memories of Kenyans are indeed very short. Everybody seems to have forgotten that...

  1. Please change whatever you are smoking to Embassy or Benson & Hedges. Now you are jumping at Kikuyu shadows where none exist? Clearly you've lost it with your tribalist hate for Kikuyus.

  2. Sam...Uhuru by whatever mean deserves to be Deputy. He leads the second biggest party in that conglomerate called PNU, by his own means he has gone through a short and steep learning curve to be a leader (I know some people will shout on this one, but give me another leader in this lot that has signficant qualities including public speaking skills and money). Thirdly it would be selfish to allow kambas, kale, lugha, luos to play actively in the succession battle while denying the mumbis and opportunity to do the same.( This is stinks).

  3. Did I say that I total support Uhuru in 2012!!!!

  4. Someone said you dont try and appease people who hate you for being who you are.

still looking for reasons to go kill the kyuks in the idp camps? why are you looking for reasons..atisjui they are front runners sijui...cheap two penny tribalist, si you just go kill them like you did in jan/Feb?

clearly ODM bloodlust will never be satisified until the 8th million kyuk is buried. just go round looking for reasons to kill us

  6. Sam,

    Several facts crop up:
    1. The seat went to Kanu. The cahirman happened to be uhuru. And there we - uhuru gets it. The parties are now balanced.
    2. Kyuks and am speaking from a very informed position have been taught a lesson. There will be no presidential candidate either 2010 or 2012 - but expect them to play the swing vote. My take is that PM would be what they would fight for.
    3. When you look at all those at the top - Uhuru would be a better moderator. He would have no problem with Raila, Kalonzo, mudavadi or kibaki. He may be the best the community coul give you at this time.
    4. I bet we should build the nation. Lets remove parochialism and armchair politics from our minds. These are vices we should do away with.
    5. Be a hopeful Kenyan. Kenya will never be the same no matter the challenges we have,
    6. Its easy to critiscise and especially when you are far away from home. Kujenga taifa sio rahisi. Come home and try.
    7. Sometimes try and see a silver lining. Dont see kikuyu all the time in all the problems that kenya has. Also see what they have done right. Just like dont see luos or the time as oppositionist - the have brought much change to kenya too. We need unity in diveristy, one kenya, one people. Yaliyopita si dwele tugange yajayo. be positive ndugu yangu.

  7. All said and done. Kenyans hate Kikuyu`s.
Who are Kalenji and Jaluo haters? Raise your hands

  8. The only person who benefitted from this cabinet is ngilu. 90% of her small contribution are in government. Whats happening to rao nad ngilu

  9. the ironies of life

uhuru decamped from ODM because he did not think Raila could lead

Uhuru is now dep PM to RAO

Kimunya and his fish market principles, RAO and Oburu are now his roomies at treasury.

and so forth, chris, taabu, luke could you do us a favor and bring out the "political" speeches made in the run -up to election, we need to evaluate these statements and start separating the wheat from the chaff. we should not allow leaders to just play with our minds, and need leaders that talk the talk and walk the walk. they are going to pretend to turn full circle, but what they said during those campaigns if it was true, then it should continue to be true, and if it was lies, then we need them exposed for it.

  10. Chris,

You and brazen tribalism... Can’t you give Kenyans a break? Do you want another Rwanda in Kenya? Seems like that’s the only way to really shut you up, to me its feels like yours is not politics any more; you have a hidden agenda. Please come out and tell us what that might be but I could very well have a wild guess… how about all kikuyus exterminated? Perhaps that could go some way to placate your otherwise pugnacious, cantankerous, bruised ego

It’s almost impossible to envisage you as a Kamba, let alone a Kenyan

  11. There is nothing wrong with Uhuru's aspirations to lead. Kalooser had such too.Let him get the trail by fire.

    Sir Alex

  12. Indeed, Uhuru was the best choice and will be the best option to lead the mumbis forward and perhaps kenya too in the not far future. In the mean time the man to watch is Raila Amolo Odinga. He certainly will be having a walkover to state house. Michuki by now must have realised that this man will alway tramp over you in the fullness of time.

As for Kalonzo my tribes man...he has some difficult corners to turn. So far he is low and flat but give the fact that he was a far third in the election he has certainly done well for himself..not too sure about my fellow kaos. Mwau and Ngilu will definately be eying to replace him in the next few years while his mouth piece mutula will be busy running up and down with the councellor in Nairobi...

  13. I have never harboured and ill feelings against Kikuyus or any tribe for that matter. I give credit where its due. But the 2007 elections brought the worst on people. I for once saw what can happen to a people pushed to the wall. This election brought out what had been suppressed in Kenyans. We have been a nation living in denial. So, much as I still don't loath Kikuyus as a tribe, the election clearly showed how these people can behave. We now know each other and now kenya should move speedily and enact the ethnic relations Act. No tribe shall take the other for granted any longer and Kenya will never be the same again.

  14. Kumekucha while you're looking at Kikuyus as a whole, they are looking at themselves in terms of districts. Murang'a for example is complaining that Nyeri got 3 ministries out of 6 constituencies while the larger Murang'a District got just one.

  15. Wanjiku, that inner comparison will be there till it gets to My uncle's family have this and not us. That aside, I don't see anything wrong with what Cris is saying. Whatever he said is true. Kibaki is a tribalist, period. And that is very clear except if you are a bigoted tribalist like him. And there are many.

  16. I do not see why we have to pussyfoot around Kikuyuism.

These are the guys perpetuating tribalism through unfair monopolies and sidelining of other smaller tribes and always reminding us of their numerical strength, mau mau, economic muscle or whatever else.

This obsession with monopolies and must be first across the finish line by whatever means necessary is often confused with expertise or hard work. Its absurd to create a commission or law thay may adversely affect 30 million based on self destructive segregational and bigoted policies and actions of and please note its just a few (maybe less than 10%) of Kikuyus in plum positions and/or wealthy.

This would legitimise their misdeeds i.e continue to treat them with kid gloves, while they perpetuate bigotry. No they need to adjust their mentality and learn to work with others just like so many others have done or be prosecuted for practising bigotry, not the other way round.

  17. Easy Abbas. Mine was just a FYI. Straight from NTV news. I don't see anything wrong with what Chris is saying either. Kibaki's tribalism rather obvious.

  18. Wanjiku, I only meant that it goes that deep. No rebuking intended. Sorry if you took it badly. And BTW, why is it that ODM were wasting Kenyans' time talking of 'irreducible minimum', even causing the burning of poor Kenyans' properties only to give in to PNU's demand. Yeah I know you will say they did it for the country blah blah but my point is WHY did they pretend like they will never budge causing all this anxiety and uncertainty in the country. They make me sick.

  19. Sam instead of talking about our brothers and sisters in the IDP camps from your far away country. send the money you stole from Marianne Briner and give it to those who really need it.

  20. Abbas you question is very valid but ever heard of ONLY FOOLS DON'T CHANGE THEIR MIND? Politics and its practioners are VERY FUNNY. What we have was bequethed on us by one Rennenberger, he staked his clout in it and wanted it done with with expresss authority form Condi. RAO has butchered many egos politically and otherwise. The true or fake politician in RAO will emerge in how he manages or bangles the fallout. When you find yourself in a whole you stop digging ama? Even to sanitize fraud we can claim IRREDUCIBLE MINIMUM is relative and not absolute.

PS: Spare Shiko bad dreams, she only reported that close to 25% of cabinet (9/40 to be exact) went to the snow-capped Mt. Kenya. And that is the face of Kenya.

  22. They need to carry out a census without the political meddling of numbers for certain communities to skew the public perception and inclination of their strength in numbers. But Kenya is a different place/beast. That Moi era is in the rear view mirror. I remember when Moi used to say, "viongozi wa kesho", well they have grown up and are educated without good jobs. A tough and hard constituency to take for granted anymore. Mapambano bado!

  23. By my quick reckoning, this is the most representative cabinet in Kenyan history (though you should check that against the figures given in Karuti Kanyinga's paper here) . Also, again by my very rough reckoning, Gikuyu are represented (in ministerial positions) at a rate lower than their proportion of the population. I'd still have liked to have seen one or two fewer Gikuyu all the same. The big winners here (population: seats) are Muslims, Kalenjins, and South Nyanza.

i think you lost your way here- you were looking for mashada that is where they point fingers-
so don't start your nonsense here ati who killed where what?? i realised you did not mention the genocide by your brothers the mungiki's in naivasha and nukuru and get this clear if the rift valley folks wanted to finish those IDP's then you would not be talking about camps now!! you see some people do not preach propaganda and foolish mentalities on here- so go post else where!!

wrong- that has been a mirth for a Along time wait until we count heads again this will be a shocker- mt. kenya does not make 34% of kenya sorry keep dreaming - this time no moi or kibaki to hide figures:):)

look closely mt. kenya ceased being the largest tribe in kenya in 1992 AND THAT IS A FACT BY INDEPENDENT SURVEY SAME TIME THEY DID THE LAST COUNT- BUT AGAIN WHO MA I TO SAY??

THIS TIME THE CENSORS MUST BE OPEN NO KIVIUTU LOOK ALIKE IN CHARGE!!

I DON'T NEED ANY DOMO FROM A KIKUYU ON HERE UNTIL AFTER THE HEAD COUNT CAPICHE!!

  27. chris,
while it is obvious where your political inclinations are, please for this once just try and look at things in a positive manner. i really dont understand what kyuks did to you to deserve all the hatred you vomit on this blog. Mind you they are the largest number of people who read your comments(being the largest tribe).

I hate the fact that, i think you are educated enough(by the time you have such a blog) to stop thinking of tribes but individuals. I am a kyuk and have no apologies to make for being one. The fact that Kibaki comes from the same ancestors with me( mark you he is not my relative) has never added bread on my table, no more than it has added for you.

I feel sorry for all those people who like you, who have an issue with the fact that one of the deputy prime ministers Mr UK is a kikuyu. It is like kikuyu in this new era belong to some under world and are not supposed to enjoy equal opportunities with others.

The fact that a few people, and mark you they were from all tribes, misused state resources in the past does not make all kikuyus thieves. Some of us are struggling so much to put food on our tables. i dont know of any extra shilling that i made more than another kenyan because i am a kyuk.

If i am hardworking and i am a kyuk, then please stop feeling jealous about my hard work, and bite the bullet and work!

How come we are not persecuting kalenjins because Mo1 ammassed wealth and gave leeway for his kinsmen to eat. Is it a partial war?

Please allow us to think freely without the tribal tag. Reward effort for what it is. Uhuru delivered a party to Kibaki, there is nothing wrong with him being rewarded. How come you are not complaining that we have all of RAO's cronies who shout luodest in the cabinet?

My honest opinion, is that your article is a hate campaign targeted at one community and that you are such a tribalist that it hurts. I think you may blame your predicaments on not being a kikuyu which is self defeating. if i was in a position of power, i would have you arrested for incitement.

  29. I'm not for one moment bothered about Uhuru for president 2012. If we as kenyans get it right constitution that is, and I hope we will, it will not matter much who is president come 2012. If we don't it will be thanks to the medling of PNU+uhuru and they will get a sound thrashing at the polls. Either way the ordinary kenyan wins. Uhuru has nothing to offer kenyans he is just in the game to protect stolen family wealth. every kenyan knows that including the kuyos. If kuyos want a president just for bragging rights cause thats what the presidency will be once we have a new constitution then they better start looking at the likes of Wangari Maathai, John Githongo or Maina kiaye the others are simply not sealable to kenyans whatever they gave to kibaki(KANU) the did not give us.....its us who vote.

    Sir Alex

  30. i dont know why you are all up in chris' face like that with your 'tribal bigot' attacks and the like. the man has said elsewhere on this very blog that he is married to a kikuyu for heaven's sake, i think your rants are a bit misplaced!!

maybe the man just calls it as he sees it? at least he has not lied, has he?

  31. After having stumbled on your web blog and left a rather irritating comment, I have come back to see if I have made any kind of impression.
Before I leave your blog, and I mean leave for good, I want say one or two things.
This country of ours cannot move forward if some mindless people can’t see the future, they continue to live in the past and the past is gone. And gone is gone!

Remember what our Prime Minister Hon Raila said yesterday, our country is surely moving towards democracy. ODMdreamers now must too realise hate is undemocratic.
All you hate-mongers shun your tribal hate and let’s build a unified state.
We cannot all be equals but with love we can overcome all.

Somebody asked why I stopped and spew my comment on your blog? The reason is, I like to speak my mind. If the recipient is going to applaud me or loathe me that does not bother me at all as long I clear my chest. Sasa nitalala salama.
