Changing Hearts Winning Minds

There is a saying that goes “the winner takes all, loser gets nothing” This saying is usually true, but as with all ordinary laws of logic, it fails to apply in our local politics. Watching all 3 political contenders of last years elections tour the vast rift valley landscape this week as part of their peace rally agenda leaves one wondering what the fuss in 2007 was all about?

Just who exactly were the real losers if all three are now in Government? The answer of course is you and I the electorate; however, if a tiny 14 seater Nissan can comfortably accommodate 30-40 crammed commuters, why can’t the government of Kenyan play host to all 3 plus 40 others in cabinet?

Well, the former leader of official opposition and current deputy prime minister and minister for trade set the pace last year for what was to come in 2008 when he absconded his constitutional role as head of opposition, vowing that his party must be in the next (current) government and jumping ship accordingly into the party of national unity yatch.

The loser yet again was Kenyans yearning for an opposition that gave an alternative to the Government of the day. The more things change the more they remain the same

PROTOCOL IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
Ordinarily, protocol wars such as those witnessed this week can be fought and easily won or lost on the basis of following simple chain of command structure, but as Taabu said earlier this week its easier to legislate bureaucratic structure than it is to legislate the will of the people.

In the hearts and minds of the vast majority of Kenyans (both IDPs and non-IDPs), protocol is in the eye of the beholder, and based on who they voted for respect will be given not taken by force. Unfortunately in life we don’t always have it the way we want, so all 3 party bigwigs made it to government and are represented in the makeup of the current coalition so we are spoilt for choice over whom to pay homage to

Under current circumstances, it’s easier to retell the past than it is to predict the outcome of our future. What is certain is that the current politics of the day shaping up and taking centre stage is neither about development nor negative ethnic bashing but it seems the era of winning over the hearts and minds of millions of Kenyans is here.

This is being done by convincing them to play along with the current uncomfortable yet too familiar script in which yesterday’s sworn enemies are today’s best friends-for the sake of national unity of course-keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

Vice President Musyoka is engaged in a battle royale to convince the masses not to brand him a political turncoat. In his own aloof way President Kibaki’s daunting task is to somehow convince all Kenyans to forget the past and act as if nothing happened. Meanwhile the Prime Minister is left with the onerous task of convincing the government he is not a third step in the ladder.

Of course Kenyans are not buying any of it, but nevertheless the job at hand is to win over our hearts and change our minds so that we can play along to the tune of a new Kenya that is before us.

PRAY FOR KENYA
Folks, its a fragile unity we share today. Stormy waters unchartered that currently lie ahead include the making of a new constitution and rehabilitating the economy. Now would be a good time to believe in God and his power to deliver miracles ala Joseph the prince of Egypt or Moses and the red sea. Spare a minute or two and pray for Kenya

  1. Luke,

You are really spot on. Most people wonder why we went to the polls. If these guys could have sat down and agreed among themselves how to share and loot Kenya like they will do in the next 5 years, at least 1500 hundred lives would be alive, hunger would have been avoided and the 10% or 20% they taunted us would be real.

The problem with Kenya is nots its sons and daughters, the problem is the level of competition imbibed in our minds where everyone wants to be the winner and the high salary these folks are getting. No one wants to loose. Every wants to be the winner. This will be the tragedy for Kenya.

All these politicians share in common the appetite to eat whats not their. Impoverish the nation and its people. They talk of poverty 24\7 yet they are friends of poverty rather than the poor. They entrench it through fake promises and pretence. They mean no well for Kenya. The three great minds will not settle for the next 5 years, they will be scheming on each other. Yet the poor, the sick, the hungry the thirsty will be looking upon them for direction. I feel for Kenya. Our ancestors are turning on their graves and the old are wondering why death is not visiting them when they see how shameless we have become as a nation.

Kibaki, Raila and Kalonzo - they are all Kanu students, they will take kenya nowhere. Five years from now Kumekucha will still be full of tribal vitriol and doble speak as its today. We shall curse lesotho,Kibaki, Rao and Kalonzo and heap all our poverty on them. Unfortunately, every second that passes, Kenya gets poorer. I have lost faith in these politicians, they mean no well for Kenya, they are all fake and driven by selfishness. Who is their successor - Ruto? Karua? Mwakere? Muite? fear not Kenyans - prepare you graves to save your kenyans from harambees. I give up, i see no hope hope for tommorrow. They should do the honourable thing and bring Nazlin, Ngethe and any one else to the government.

Finally, it could be time we left the busines of electing presidency to the parliament. This way there will be peace otherwise the presidency will still be a mirage until and unless we bring the kikuyu on board. Raila could this time round form a coalition against them - am not seeing any politician doing it again in the coming future - and now they may not be vying any time soon.

  2. Luka you must have deliberately chosen to permute the two words: CHANGE and WINNING. Pertaining to Kenyan politics and matter of the mind and heart you can never be so sure on which part of the human anatomy is more valuable-mind or soul?.

Kenyans may as well collectively qualify for evangelists. They selective bother God when it suits them and use the same God-given faculties to inflict utmost damage to His creation.

We appear jinxed and paralized with the P words. Now PORTFOLIO (PORTY thieves) has DULY given birth to PROTOCOL (prototype). What next is everybody's guess.

Nonethless we need plenty of prayers if not to insult God's infinite generousity. We are in safe religious hands you know, they never DISAPPOINT when it matters most.

The two issues of katiba and land will enjoy all the warmth and see no light in these circumstances. In the meantime the genie is bottled and waiting for spark. PEACE CAN ONLY BE CULTIVATED BUT NEVER LEGISLATED. All else is red herrng and splitting hairs.

Kimunya Linked To Public Land Deal

    News

Story by NATION Team | Parliament

A Cabinet minister used his influence to allocate public land to a company in which he has interests, MPs claimed yesterday. They demanded the 25 acres hived from Njambini Settlement Scheme and allocated to Midlands Limited be revoked.

Juja MP William Kabogo (Sisi kwa Sisi) said Finance minister Amos Kimunya was the member who was being referred to by Migori MP Owino Likowa (Narc) as having interests in Midlands Ltd.

Lands assistant minister Asman Kamama had variously referred to a minister whom he did not name, stating he was not a director of the company in question.

Standing on a point of order, Mr Kabogo asked: “What does he (the assistant minister) know about the minister that he is hiding his name. He has said the previous minister who we know is Amos Kimunya.”

But Mr Kamama sprung to his defence arguing he thought Mr Likowa had mentioned a previous minister. “I thought it (Mr Kimunya’s name) was mentioned by Hon Likowa,” he protested. The matter came up as Mr Kamama was responding to a question by Mr Likowa who sought to know under what circumstances Midlands Ltd acquired land at Njambini Settlement Scheme. “What portion of land did the company acquire, for what purpose and at what cost?” Mr Likowa asked.

In reply, the assistant minister said the company was allocated 10.12 hectares (25 acres) in June 2005 at a cost of Sh125,336. The company, which he said had applied and had been verified as deserving, wanted to establish a vegetable processing plant to serve Nyandarua District and beyond.
    Waving minutes

But Mr Likowa, who was waving minutes of the company’s annual general meeting held in August last year, was supported in his claim by MPs Macharia Mukiri (Molo, Narc) and Moses Cheboi (Kuresoi, Kanu) that Midlands Ltd intended to put up a pyrethrum plant on the farm.

Said Mr Likowa: “A minister, who is a director of the company, influenced the allocation of the land. It was for erecting a pyrethrum plant.” But Mr Kamama disputed the claims that Mr Kimunya was a director of the company and went ahead to name seven directors.

However, Mr Likowa, reading from the minutes which he tabled, insisted that Mr Kimunya was one of the directors. The speaker will make a ruling over the matter on Thursday.

In an exclusive interview with the Nation last week, Mr Kimunya admitted he was a director of the company. The minister, however, said he resigned in 2006 upon coming into public office. “My involvement in Midlands Ltd was to bring everything together and give the company political leadership. I was needed as a link to the Government by members,” the minister said.

SOURCES IN THE GOVERNMENT NOW SAY THAT The East African Marine System (Teams)WAS NEVER TRANSFERED TO THE GOVERNMENT!!it is still in this individuals names as owners and the projects is going on!!kumekucha can you double check- this is a source working there??

    The East African

    News
Drama unfolded recently around the ownership of the entity known as The East African Marine System (Teams) - the $80 million government-fronted fibre optic cable project linking Kenya to Fujaira in the United Arab Emirates.

Alarm bells sounded when the Solicitor-General, Wanjuki Muchemi, circulated a letter within the corridors of government saying that records at the Companies Registry showed that the name "Teams" had been registered by two private individuals - businessman Jaon Wachira Wambugu and quantity surveyor Dickson Kahoro.

Parallels were quickly drawn with what happened in 2000 when, just as Vodafone PIc of the UK was about to sign a joint venture with Telkom Kenya to create mobile phone company Safaricom Ltd It was discovered that airobi businessman, J.T. Chege, had gone ahead and registered a company bearing the name "Vodafone."The dispute that erupted nearly scuttled negotiations with the foreign investor. In his letter, Mr Muchemi said that the matter needed to be treated with "utmost urgency," pointing out that public resources to the tune of Ksh200 million ($2.86 million) have already been spent on implementation of the "Teams" project. "We are also aware that the government has extensively used the name 'Teams' in a number of documents including the memorandum of understanding with Etisalat," he added.

Analysts, however, remain puzzled over the curious fact that the government, which has its own lawyers, chose to incorporate the company using such a roundabout route, not only employing an outside lawyer but also an entirely private party in the person of a quantity surveyor. This is the second time the Solicitor General has taken issue with aspects of the project. In February, Mr Muchemi criticized the manner in which the award of the contract for a marine survey was awarded to Tyco International, arguing there had been no competitive tender process, Apparently, the ministry had in January sought and' was granted an exemption from open tendering by the Directorate of Public Procurement.

if any thing is te example of Miwani Sugar Company by some kikuyu players?? they have even the guts to go to Lou Land and sell off a government company (Miwani sugar) owned fully be the government of kenya for peanuts to an international company!!
I'm Glade Prime minster moved quickly to stop the sale-
the case is now in court-

My question is why didn't the government ask the locals in Kisumu if anyone wAS INTERESTED TO by shares just like mumia's sugar company which is a public company and the government has minority shares??

this kikuyu crocks do not stop! then they expect people to welcome back their KIKUYU IDP's when they are taking away the live hood of the same people- it is everywhere from Kisumu to the Rift Valley to the coast- government selling off properties for peanuts and sometimes give them out for free according to some documents which show the government bank giving this kikuyu business people the loans in millions(same of them have never held businesses) then they find a foreign partner and offer 60% of the company then the government hands over the assets to them-
    this is day time robbery!!

Odm please move very first- there is more than 30 contracts signed in 2007 on this bases- all must be stopped and handed back to the government until a proper investigation has been done or
we will shame them by printing all the names- who got the property, who received what money- we are putting up a site post only dirty deals as kenyans- and we will make sure it runs and high lights all the dirty deals for kenyans to be informed and push the government-
next year elections kenyans will vote when being well informed on who is who and who is involved in dirty deals-

our group is also looking at taking this cases to court against the government selling of government properties without proper procedures- it is called citizen action!! keep your eyes open - you will know when our site is up-

Kamukuchu is a very nice site in politics and we we want to go further- by seeking actions to be taken on this cases- we the citizens of Kenya have a right to take our government to court!!

Fraud office inquiry into UK links to Kenyan cash and arms scandal
    # The Guardian,
    # Monday October 1 2007

The Serious Fraud Office has begun a new investigation into British links with one of the biggest corruption inquiries in Africa. UK firms won huge contracts from the Kenyan governments of presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, but anti-corruption investigators have discovered that many were fictitious and amounted to state-sponsored looting.

The SFO inquiry is concentrating on the movement of millions of pounds into accounts in the tax havens of Guernsey and Jersey controlled by Andrew MacGill, a 64-year-old arms dealer from Fife.

The inquiry into the Anglo Leasing scandal was welcomed last week by the Kenyan high commissioner, Joseph Muchemi.

Documents seen by the Guardian show that financing for some of the 18 suspicious security equipment contracts at the heart of the investigation was administered through a company called Investec Trust, based in Guernsey.

Three men are now the focus of the SFO investigation. Besides Mr MacGill, they are his business partners, Rashmi Kamani and brother Deepak.

Kenyan investigators believe that many of the contracts the men benefited from involved sums being paid for equipment that was either overpriced or not delivered at all. Mr MacGill agrees that his Russian wife, Ludmilla, signed the first Anglo Leasing contract. Other businessmen in Liverpool, Daventry and Cambridge played minor roles.

The Kamani brothers, who once held extensive property interests in the UK, have disappeared from their Nairobi villa and are on the Kenyan police wanted list.

Kenyan ministers have repeatedly professed no knowledge about the individuals behind the Anglo Leasing network. But the Investec documents show that Mr McGill and the Kamanis have been involved in 13 of the suspect contracts, which had an overall total value of more than $700m (£343m). Mr MacGill runs a group of companies under the name LBA - short for lightweight body armour.

Guardian emails to Mr MacGill, for comment on the allegations, have been replied to by a secretary, claiming he could not be contacted. In past correspondence he has insisted he acted properly, recently saying: "You need to remember this is Africa and you can't believe anything anyone says."

Investec Trust is an arm of the South African-based private banking group Investec, best known for its UK sports sponsorship. The trust handled LBA's business from 2001 through accounts with the banks HSBC in Guernsey and Standard Chartered in Jersey. Internal audits showed that no questions were asked by Investec managers about LBA's receipt of funds from Kenya or Mr MacGill's arms dealing for the Kenyan police with controversial suppliers that included a Yugoslav state company accused of supplying military aid to Saddam Hussein.

Suspicions were aroused among some Investec staff in April 2002 when a fax arrived from Rashmi Kamani, in Nairobi, requesting the transfer of $3.5m - received from the Kenyan government - to a Swiss company called Apex Finance. A file note said: "Who is RC Kamani? What authority do [sic] he have to effect payments on LBA? Who is Apex Finance Corp and what connection to LBA?" On Mr MacGill's instructions the transfer was made, followed by at least four more until February 2004. They totalled more than £15m.

But it was only after the publication in March 2004 of a report by the former anti-corruption chief, John Githongo, that executives realised the danger. The company's lawyers recommended the firm make a suspicious activity report to Guernsey's financial intelligence service.

Last week an Investec spokesman said: "We are aware of this matter and are satisfied that we have dealt with it appropriately."

Peter Neville, director general of the Guernsey financial services commission, said the island's criminal law restricted dissemination of information from disclosures to the intelligence service: "We take very seriously any evidence that a licensed finance business has been involved, even unwittingly, in untoward activities."

  18. I do not understand why Kenyans do not understand the undercutting of this Grand Coalition. Will it stand to all the odds already against it? As someone who has keenly followed the politics of Kenya, since Kibaki resigned from the Moi government and formed his own party called DP, it is do or die game. What Kibaki does not understand is that it is his last term, if at all the Grand Coalition will go to the five years. The one to make it happen, is definitely Raila. So kalonzo should be told that constitutionally (according to the National Accord signed), he is just a shadow of the president without executive power. So he is third in rank. And I fully agree that they have to win the minds and hearts of Kenya and he, Kalonzo is not near of doing that. He should be told to play cool in his fallacious servant
leadership principle and practice. True servant leadership is not pushy, it is humbly and deep in the fear of God. Look at Moses and thyen Joshua in the Bible.

  22. A multitude of poor Kenyans went to went to the polls on 12/27/07 and casted their votes. A few hours after fulfilling their civic duties, some powerful elites who feel that Kenya belongs to them decided that the outcome of those elections did not serve their interests.

While these individuals were sitting very safe somewhere in Kenya guarded by the best armed officials money can buy, ordinary Kenyans, whose only crime was their desire to vote hoping their choice would bring "bread and butter" changes in the country, were rained on with storms of death and destruction.. Poor neighbors who have lived in harmony with one another for years were given reasons to hack and burn each other to death. Small money generating properties that helped them hang on to dear life were destroyed.

Kofi Annan, the UN man who in 1994 stood by while, approximately, 8,000 Rwandans (men, women, children, pregnant women and unborn babies extracted from their bellies of those pregnant women) were being butchered on a daily basis for 100 days, was dispatched to Kenya broker some power sharing sham mainly favoring his bosses in Britain, Europe, USA and those greedy Kenyan elites allied with them. Since these elites have no vested interest in serving ordinary Kenyans, there was nobody at those negotiation tables representing ordinary Kenya. Ordinary Kenyans have no clue as to what was discussed
These elite Africans were being coerced to reach some make shift agreements created centuries ago by the same “divide and conquer” colonial bosses still ruling Kenya through these African proxies!!

Had these Kenyan elites been patriotic enough, they would not have waited for Kofi Annan and the West to tell them they a responsibility to protect Kenyans instead of putting themselves in pedestals at the expense of the rest of Kenyan citizens.

THESE KENYAN ELITES FORGET THAT THE WESTERN POWERS GOVERNING THEM DO NOT HAVE FRIENDS WHEREEVER THEY GO. THEY ONLY HAVE INTERESTS. IF KENYAN ELITES CANNOT DELIVER THOSE ITEMS THESE FOREIGN POWERS DEMAND, THEY WILL BE REPLACED BY OTHER KENYANS WAITING IN THE HOOD AND WILLING TO SURPRESS THE REST OF THE POPULATION IN ORDER TO DELIVER THOSE INTERESTS.

KOFI ANNAN WAS PAID TO ENFORCE THIS POWER SHARING SCAM ON KENYANS USING THESE SAME ELITES WHO HAVE BEEN INCAPABLE OF GOVERNING SINCE 1963. THEY GET RICH WHILE EVERYTHING ELSE COLLAPSES AROUND THEM. THEY ARE INCAPABLE OF USING KENYA’S NATURAL RESOURCES TO MAKE LIFE TOLERABLE FOR KENYANS.

IT IS SHAMEFULL THAT THESE SAME ELITES, WHOSE SKILLS ARE LIMITED TO FINDING WAYS OF WREAKING HAVOC ON KENYAN CITIZENS, ARE NOW SHAMELESSLY VISITING THE SCENES OF THEIR CRIMES. HOW RUDE!

APPARENTLY, NOBODY GIVES A DAMN WHEN AN AFRICAN BLOOD IS BEING SPENT BY AFRICAN ELITES!

  28. I hope everyone is having a good and smooth sunday world over in regard to kumekucha.Certainly the situation we are experiencing is like that of a traveller who is somewhere along nyamakima or country bus who is approached by some good looking thugs prolly 'mungiki' with a good looking mobile phone. After haggling they settle on a price and just as the bus of matatu is about to set off they switch the working one with a mud laden one and scatter to share the loot. You cn imagine the frusturation one gets on arriving at home.

Such is our frusturation with our politicians. We might keep on whinining here and post acres of comments and responses but at the end of the day our Consititution Will be our main undoing for much of the time to come.

If indeed we had a good consititution,we could not be hearing of such things as a gang packed cabinet, protocol and retirees being the ones to hire.Keeping in line with the title and theme of the current post, yes the top three are trying to pamper us to play ball with them and that is not very good for business. We are being pasted with verbose speeches and such like dirges to forget to point out the rot within the executive, legislature and certainly the judiciary.

Sometimes i feel like we should have accepted the Wako draft and sail on to patch up the messy holes that Wako left when he raped the bride that was paraded at bomas for all Kenyans to court.By that way we could have even sneaked in a clause to scrap off some nauseating issues like having the gang of forty decided over a cup of tea.The long and short of it, methinks is to have a clear cut Katiba to put inherent checks to the politicians.

Lastly, where did John Kiarie aka KJ vanish to?

We need more info on why RAO can watch as Sam Kivuitu precides over the by-elections given his not so pleasant mishandling of the same?Couldnt they be stopped until we have them resign first?Only a thought!

  29. In a civilized country, Kibaki could have long resigned.

    These events are the reasons.

    1)failure to honour MOU
2)feeding a second wife with tax payers' money
    3)Murder of Mbai
4)Failure to design a constituion he agreed on before elected in 2002
    5)His involvement in Anglo-Leasing
    6)His support for Arthur Brothers
    7)Stealing of votes
8)Killing of innocent people in Eldoret,Kisumu, Nakuru, Nbi, Naivasha
    9)Stealing of Exam results

    And many more.

Political thuggery started with Kenyatta. If we cant send this monster back to Othaya as quickly as possible, then Kenya has no chance to see justice. Violence will reign.

  30. The resolution of Kenya's problems lies with Kenya's young people 50 or less years old.

There's no way out if those Kenyans who need change start asking foreigners, who want African resources without paying for them, to help them sort out their own mess.

Nobody can help you solve problems brought about by your own ignorance.Infact an ignorant man always loses.

If you have a treasure in your hand whose value you have no clue, imagine how much you will get for that treasure if you try selling to a person who is very aware you are ignorant about value of what you have in your hand!!

This is the tragic situation in Kenya and Africa as a continent. Our leaders are too ignorant to put values on Africa's natural treasures. They only know how to buy arms supplied by people who know the values of what Africa has and kill the citizens they suppose to protect while the treasures leave the continent for nothing!!
