Breaking News: ODM Suspends Talks With PNU

As Violence Breaks Out in Kibera Slums

Tension is steadily building around the country following the collapse of talks between PNU and ODM towards the formation of a grand coalition cabinet. The PNU have outrightly rejected ODM's demands for certain cabinet portfolios while the ODM had announced a few moments ago that it is suspending any further discussions with PNU until the current cabinet is dissolved.

The calmness that has been prevailing in most parts of the country following the signing of the peace agreement on 28th February 2008 was this morning shattered following ODM's announcement that they had with immediate effect suspended any form of discussions with PNU until the current cabinet is dissolved. That announcement immediately triggered violent demonstrations in Kibera with mobs barricading roads and lighting fires. Police have already been dispatched to Kibera but reports reaching Nairobi say that tension is building Kisumu, Naivasha, Nakuru and Eldoret. These are the towns that witnessed the worst form of violence and destruction of property following the post election skirmishes earlier this year.

At the time of posting this, the ODM Member of Parliament for Mt. Elgon Fred Kapondi was also reportedly being detained by police on unspecified charges.

Update by Chris at 16:11 PM
All indications so far are that Internal security Minister George Saitoti and his team have been on red alert since last night. There are reports coming in that there was also a little trouble in Kipkelion in the Rift Valley earlier today but it was swiftly contained. Reports also indicate that the troubles in Kibera have also been quickly snuffed out.

There is a possibility that we will witness numerous arrests over the next few days as a way to pre-empt violence. Fascinatingly the thinking has not changed since last December. After the elections the game plan was to shoot to kill to scare. That one failed big time. This time it is arrest to scare. It is anybody's guess how effective this will be. However the fact remains that there are too many hungry jobless Kenyans out there for comfort.

Update by Chris at 21:00 PM Kenyan Time
Violence reported in Kisumu. I will give more details as I get them.

  1. The STORM is soon sweeping the LULL away. Janjaweed literally translates to EVIL on horses and here they come brandishing machetes. Kenya belongs to all of us and no amount of brute force will ligitimize an illigal regime. Churchil saw it mid last Century: YOU CANNOT GOVERN AN UNWILLING population, never.

  2. I completely agree with ODM, there is no point in dragging this grotesque charade any further. Kibaki can now go ahead and appoint every PNU MP a minister lol.

They are nothing but collateral damage. Cannon fodders for the powerful and the wealthy. Did you say Kibera or Runda? How brainless can some fellow humans be? Ready! Steady! Kill!

I bet some of those you call brainless are far more intelligent than you are but could not raise school fees coz of tribal affiliations. There comes a time when you got to look at the bigger picture and not the confines of your computer room or bed room. 10. Guys,

I think we are missing the point here.

1st : Is the ODM demand for a cabinet dissolution REASONABLE and LAWFUL?

    2nd : Is it FEASIBLE?

    3rd:

My answer to all these questions is YES. The present cabinet as we all know is unconstitutional thus illegal. ODMs demands are very reasonable to say the least.

The cause to all Kenya's problems is Kibaki. Ironically the key to solving all these problems is Kibaki.

Pray, why does he allow himself to be used by his subordinates?

Or should we say peoples revolution?

  15. Anom@5.30 AM;

You do not see Raila, Ida, Fdel or Kibaki, his cronies and foreign backers on the streets because they have money to (a) educate their children(b) treat themselves when they get sick (c) fly in and out of Kenya (d) eat good food at home and hotels in Kenyan.

Kenyans are hard working people who are not looking for handouts from UN World Food programs or forreign aids. They do not want be humuliated in crowded dislocation camps to be fed by foreign aids workers.
Kenyans are very proud people. But these elite Kenyans in power do not seem to understand that. These are the poeple who are failing KENYANS.

They also (a) live in good and safe neighbourhoods (b) do not have to travel using public transportation through the rugged roads where average Kenyans are condemned to traffic deaths on a daily basis (c) do not live in slums where millions of Kenyans are condemned to daily raw sewage and garbage that is never collected and no running water or proper toilet facilities.

In other words, they do not understand how depressed a common man is. Kenya is a failed state ruled by foreigners assisted by these elites who are power hungry and comfortable controlling the rest of poor Kenyans. If you could have the opportunity to count how many these elite Kenyans are, you may find that they are about 1000 of them. These are the people who are willing to spill the blood of poor Kenyans on behalf of foreigners who control them and would fly away to these foreign countries when faced with idea of bleeding to defend Kenya. These are the most selfish un-patriotic individuals who have forgotten that many Kenyans bled, died or were detained for years to free themselves from colonial yoke. These people are working for the defend the interest foreigners who pay them and do not have the guts to defend Kenya and it people by holding honest trade negotiations with these foreign powers!! The saddest aspect of the whole saga is that the only enemy these Kenyan elites see are poor Kenyans who, at the moment, cannot afford to wait for additional empty promises!!
They use tribalism to cover up their failures to serve the public who vote for them election after election, including 12/27/07.

Now my friend you think that if Raila becomes president they will stop sleeping hungry because resources will be distributed fairly? Shock on you!!

You get a plate of Ugali by working for it. Nowhere even in the US do we have people getting a plate of food without working hard for it.

So, all the idiots who are streaming into the streets to die for their captain, can you shape up and go and make some money for your empty stomachs. After that we can talk reasonably. Because talking with a hungry person.. My oh my you get alot of crap.

I think it is not unlawful to demand anything, but the problem is that some of ODM's demands especially appointment of PS, Parastatal chiefs and ambassadors are unreasonable as they are not part of the signed deal. PNU is also to blame for refusal to cede some powerful ministries.

If you look at the letters exchanged in today Daily Nation, you will clearly see both sides are unreasonable. PNU is heavily relying on the constitution to put forward their argument while ODM is relying on the signed deal.

After the deal was signed, I remember I said in this forum that there was problem based on the fact that the constitutional powers of the president were not changed. Some bloggers here called me a scare monger and said there is no it would have escaped all the legal brains involved.
It is only the PM and DPM posts that were entrenched in the constitution, the 50/50 sharing was not. As things stand now, it seems it is going to be another tough battle.

  34. So let's say Kibaki and PNU totally destroy the spririt of the coalition, what happens to the over 800,000 IDPs currently living in stadia and show grounds? Will they all be resettled in Ukambani? PNU has threatened to forcefully resettle the IDPs even in areas where the local population does not want to see or live close to these people. Will the military provide perpetual security to the resettled victims for eternity?

Why cant Kibaki recognize what is at stake here? Constructing peace cannot be done in his normal thievery behavior. It has to be sincere.

  35. M-pesa, you are right, part of the plan was to displace as many Kikuyus as possible. That succeeded and failed altogether. Even you, an articulate soldier of democracy and a guardian of peace must accept that Kibaki and PNU have been great impediments to the success of this coalition thing. My question to you is; how do the actions of Kibaki help things?

How does reneging on a signed agreement chart the way for national healing and reconstructions. The ultimate questions is this; Why is it that ten years from today, Kikuyu's will still be genuinely asking each other why the rest of the country resents them? Well fellows, hii tabia ya uizi na ukora is what generates animosity. The most unfortunate thing is that when Kibaki displays conmanship of the highest possible order, the countrywide perception is that Kikuyus are conmen…even though the reality is that 99.9% of them are hardworking honest men and women.

  40. KOFI ANNAN HAS MANAGED TO HOOdWINK KENYANS INTO THINKING THAT HE WAS NEGOTIATING SOME PEACE IN KENYA AFRTER 12/27/07 RIGGED ELECTION.

THERE ARE DISTURBING SIMILARITIES IN ANNAN'S ROLE IN KENYA'S TURMOIL THE PART HE PLAYED IN RWANDA'S, (1994), THAT LED TO 100 DAYS OF GENOCIDE IN THAT COUNTRY IN WHICH 8,000 RWANDANS A DAY WERE BUTCHERED.

ON ANNA'S INSTRUCTIONS, THE UN COMMANDER IN RWANDA, GENERAL ROMEO DALLAIRE, DID NOTHING TO THWART THE LOOMING DOOM WHICH WAS KNOW TO HIM PRIOR TO THE MASSCRE. WHILE THE HUTUS WERE BUSY WITH THEIR KILLING RAMPAGE ON A DAILY BASIS, PAUL KAGAME AND HIS RPF (Rwanda Patriotic Front trained in Uganda) FORCES WERE ABLE TO ADVANCE AND TAKE OVER THE COUNTRY after the death of 800,000 or more people. KAGAME IS NOW THE DARLING OF USA, armed to the teeth, and have been used as proxy in displacement millions of poor Congolese into UN feeding camps while the mineral wealth of the Democratic Repulic of Congo is looted.

The Western Powers and the UN were full aware of what was going on in Rwanda.
The soft spoken Kofi Annan (a wolf in a sheep's clothing) has allowed Kibaki and his foreign supporters to prepare for what may happen in Kenya next. They had 3 months since January, 2008 to make that preparation.

The pressure and threat that was issued by Britain, USA and European Union against these elite Kenyans during these fake negotiations was unbelievable considering that these same powers have been in Iraq since 2003 and are unable to find the quick solutions they were demanding from Kenyans.

These armed powers do not have human friends in countrires where they decide to destroy people's lives. The have resources interests. Africans who can help achieve those interests are armed to the teeth. These willing Africans can easily be replace if they do not deliver the goods, mark that word. These screwed up elite Africans do not seem to see or understand the writing on the wall even if it hits on the face.

  41. Anon @7:17AM your glee is as misplaced as your "truth". You are like the right leg rejoicing at the injured left leg. Kibaki and by extension PNU need Raila more than they realize. I only wish one amongst those idiots around him was brave enough to tell guy he has been walking naked since Dec 30, 2007.

Political tension breeds instability, instability breeds mistrust, mistrust breeds resentment, resentment breeds more tension. If you don't mitigate the tension it will [eventually] find release through other means. This violence has been coming for weeks. Arresting the "perpetrators" is unlikely to help. As someone rightly pointed out, there's no shortage of angry, jobless young men.

It's hilarious when Karua and friends press Kibaki to hang on to the ministry for Local Government or risk being out of touch with the "people". The old ditherer was out of touch at birth!

Kikuyus don't care for your love. They just want to be left alone to work hard and enjoy their sweat. And remember even if a new election is called your presidential candidate will still be defeated hands down. In a democracy, it is the numbers that count, not domo domo!!

  50. ODM must understand that:

Kenya is not the Yala Swamps of Nyanza. And Kibaki government is not Dominion Group to be intimidated through some bum arguments.

What is happening to the Dominion Group in Nyanza is symptomatic of what is soon to happen in Kenya: a crash of two cultures. One culture embraces hard work, investment and development. The other is a malignant culture of poverty that intimidates others for hand-outs; this culture specializes in playing the victim card using such terms as historical injustice. The malignant culture is being introduced in Nairobi by Raila by telling his followers not to pay rent to people who have invested their sweat in building rental houses. While the Dominion Group has a choice of either staying or relocating, the Kenyan pro-investment culture cannot afford that luxury. The only choice is to resist and fight back with all avaiable resources this pestilence. In the Bible, St. Paul says that those who don't sweat should not expect to eat. Let us abide by Paul's command and reject ODmism, once and for all.

this is a neat plan - i applaud them - i hear they have raised $18 million and the funds are still pouring in- they say they are going to up to 30 thousand people from each province-
i think kenya will be at war now- can you imagine how many people?? it will reach 1million soon!! can kibaki and his goons kill a million freedom fighters??? this people know they now can provide for their families and they will go out and fight- since they had nothing before 6,470 is a lot of many for kenyans who never had jobs right??
this group does not care about ODM or PNU they want democracy in Kenya!!

Naivasha and Nakuru happen to be on the other side of the Lesotho divide.... Go back and study your geography.

Naivasha is not kikuyu land so where do they think they will be going??? kenyans can use that route to attack!! they should now start thinking Iraq style or palestine and Isreal- who needs panga's?? haven't the kikuyu's kiabki cronies already called other tribes terrorists??? so let as be what they want us to be-"terrorist"" cheap stuff is out there??? hit the kikuyu mother land while saitoti is busy trying to kill our people- let us concentrate in central- they keep calling us terrorists- so let kenyans act!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. WOO WOO!!who said the kikuyu's in central are your enemies??? shouldn't you be concentrating on the pnu leaders instead?? what is the point of attacking central?? what have they done to you??? they do not give the orders to kibaki or saitoti!! those people are law unto themselves!!

  68. agree with everyone

lesotho is the best option, let them have their leaders, all of them, their militia (mungiki) all off them, their businesses, all of them. and leave the rest of us to rebuild our lives afresh.

    lets do this now

  69. People this will be worse than Rwanda?? kikuyu's on Mashada and other blogs have been calling Balala a terrorists and saying Muslims are not Kenyans!! now that is inciting and very bad!! why lebal other Kenyans with arrogance? doesn't kenya belong to all Kenyans no matter waht tribe you originate from??? so are the Indians born in kenya not Kenyans too??? this kikuyu's are taking a very dark path and leading kenya into a tribal war that we will never be able to come out of for a long long time! so who will the winner in this all?? not PNU and not ODM- so why incite or abuse other tribes?? just because your rigged guy is in power???

kenya is full of jobless and hungry people especially the youth!! why do you think last year the mungiki were fighting too?? one claim i heard them singing is the youth is hungry and jobless- they need the share of the national cake- so in essence all kenyans are saying the same thing from all other tribes too!!it is all about democracy!! not tribes!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. one tribe is still propping up a corrupt regime instead of working with others to get rid of the problem. they are trying to show muscle and ignoring the main issues and instead creating confusion. that tribe needs to be isolated to their central location

i agree totally and if the Diaspora- what i read on here are raising funds to make sure this sham stops and the kenyan people continue fighting unless there is a duly elected government of the people after another elections then so be it!! mean while everyone should keeep the leaders they voted for- kKibaki should keep the provinces that voted for him and raila should keep his-
all the provinces that voted majority for each candidate should be led by that individual- this means kibaki central lesotho!!!!

  72. YES YES!!!!I AGREE TOTALLY- LIKE ALL THE OTHER BLOGS- KENYANS ARE SAYING THE SAME THING LET KIBAKI RULE CENTRAL LESOTHO!-SO NOW WE SHOULD BLOCK EVERYTHING - COAST PROVINCE SHOULD NOT ALLOW ANYTHING TO LEAVE!! MOMBASA PORT TO BE BLOCKED BY THE PEOPLE!OR ALL THE TRUCK CONVOYS SHOULD BE ATTACKED SYSTEMATICALLY- SAME WITH ANY DELIVERY SIDE- WESTERN E.T.C- MAKE SURE NO FUEL PASSES- AFTER ALL MOST ORDINARY KENYANS DO NOT HAVE CARS SO WHO CARES!!
KIBAKI AND PNU HOW MANY MILLIONS ARE THEY READY TO KILL?? PEOPLE SHOULD GO FOR ALL THEIR FAMILIES TOO- LIKE WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE KILLING YOUR FATHER !!MOTHER!! CHILDREN!! BROTHER!!SISTERS!! COUSINS? AND THEIRS ARE SAFE?? NOT ANYMORE- I'm sure this can be done!! MAKE SURE THEY HURT AND MOURN LIKE ANY OTHER KENYENS!! USE WORD OF MOUTH INTELLIGENCE IT IS THE BEST!! YOU WILL FIND THEM- NOT ONLY KIKUYUS LIVE IN NAIROBI -MOMBASA OR ALL THOSE PLACES THEY HIDE THEIR FAMILIES- OR ELSE THEY SHOULD SEND THEM TO LESOTHO- BUT THEY WILL STILL BE FORCED TO BRING THEM BACK TO CIVILIZATION!!
THEY SHOULD NOT THINK AFTER KILLING MANY KENYANS AND THINGS SETTLE THAT THEIR FAMILIES SHOULD BE OUT OF THE IT! NOPE- THE AVENGE SHOULD REMAIN IN PLACE EVEN IF KENYA BECOMES MANAGEABLE- THEY SHOULD BE CLEARED OUT!!EVERY ONE HAS TO MOURN LOSS!! THEIR IMMEDIATE FAMILIES IS THE KEY!! AN EYE FOR AN EYE!
SAITOTI NEVER HAD CHILDREN"IMPOTENT" SO GO FOR HIS MOTHER, FATHER, SISTERS, BROTHER E.T.C WIPE IT CLEAN- WHO WANTS HIS ADOPTED CHILDREN?? NO BLOOD TIES THERE!!!

It is rather clear that PNU is trying to take advantage of the situation. Either way, reality will hit them soon.

  76. no point in continuing to antagonise each other any more. lets agree to disagree and concede that central province will be governed only by central province and let the rest work out a fresh mandate of governance.

even pple from central should take advantage of this opportunity so that they can go on without having to worry about how they are perceived outside of central.

    Divisions in Kibaki’s camp

Meanwhile, divisions have emerged among President Kibaki’s men over a proposal that PNU names its share of the Cabinet, The Standard has learnt.

A source said two camps emerged at a Cabinet meeting at Harambee House on Monday, after some ministers tried to convince the President to appoint 20 members and PSs.

"There was a debate over whether the President should name the PNU share. The proposal nearly sailed through," a minister said.

But the source said the plan flopped after three ministers from the Mt Kenya region warned that it could plunge the country into chaos.

The Attorney General, Mr Amos Wako, also cautioned that it would be unconstitutional to name a Cabinet without the blessings of the Prime Minister-designate Raila Odinga.

"The National Reconciliation and Accord Act is already law, and we cannot change it without consulting him (Raila). If he goes to court over any appointment, he can easily win," the source quoted Wako as saying.

But some ministers argued that it was constitutional for the President to make the appointments.

The meeting failed to agree on interpretations by two lawyers in the Cabinet.

  89. Lesotho! Everyone of the many contributors to this thread seem to be shouting but I think they are missing the point. Did the rest of South Africa choose to cede from lesotho? Obviously NO. So there is no historical or any other context of comparing central Kenya to Lesotho.

ODMers seem to think that Kibaki was only elected by people from central province only. Bifwoli Wakoli is an Mp on PNU ticket, Wetangula, Chirau Ali Makwere etc. SO which Lesotho will put those?

people so bereft of common sense seem to think that Nairobi ends at the CBD, my friends after Muthaiga roundabout on thika road you are in cetral Kenya. So dont kid yourself that you can lesotho people.

As Raila likes to talk about river Nile, that the way we are- streching everywhere. And we didnt get to where we are by siting on our bums. its by sweat and perseverence. If in doubt ask Pamela Gathoni - she was the first mama to buy equity shares when it was a building society from her milk check - a paltry 800 then, how bank account now reads like a cell phone number.

So forget Lesotho coz we wont go there and work your butt off, this country has enough for all of us we know where to look for it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Those ODMers talking of Lesotho should think twice before writing this crap. If we go that way only Masai kiuks and kambas can claim Nairobi. The city has expanded to what was formerly Kiambu and parts of ukabani(athi river) The Ngong side of town is formally Masailand.

By the way all the major institutions of learning are in lesotho. UON, Kenyatta, JKUCAT and many national schools, KARI KEFRI

We all depend on one another, but I am of the opinion other parts of kenya needs lesotho than lesotho needs them.

  91. STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID KENYANS. IS THAT ENOUGH? STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.

You know here in the west, we co-exist. We don't disturb our economies. We think about our families and we do not fight for our leaders.

Oh wait, one more thing.. You Kenyans are fighting among your tribes? Here in America, we tolerate people of different races. We have 13% and 15% Black and Hispanic populations. And I hear one black person might become president in November.

But you foolish Africans cannot co-exist with a person of your VERY own race? Anyway I landed on this site by mistake, Gotta go, But I'll post this msg all over your blogs.

  92. STUPID STUPID STUPID ANNON 3:40 AM

We fight because our Political Structures are still formed in a way that politics directly affect the food on our table.

YOU DON'T FIGHT because your political structures have evolved for OVER 226 years. We've only done 45 years since our independence.

IF WE DON'T FIGHT then we won't get to where you are NOW.

SO WE ARE STUPID STUPID STUPID now so we can manage to co-exist like you in the west in the future.

Kapish? ya smell me? You feel mua?

    Good!

  93. D mutai,

Its not 200 years that will make us stop fighting, its a genocide like Rwanda's. So, instead of waiting for a Rwanda, why can't we figure out how to stop giving a rat's ass about our tribes?

Now I think that was the foolishness Old Glory was talking about.
