Back To Square 1

ONLY BRAND NEW LEADERSHIP AND BRAND NEW IDEAS CAN SAVE KENYA

It may have taken a while but message "2012" has finally begun to sink in. it has become stark-glaring clear and alarmingly so to a growing number of concerned and right thinking Kenyans that the current grand coalition government featuring the as yet to be unveiled fully expanded political hybrid cabinet represents no real change at all whatsoever to the immediate future of Kenya and most importantly to the common mwananchi's day to day welfare

As we shall see tomorrow when the revealed line up of the coalition cabinet will be announced, the line-up will certainly not herald the much anticipated and desired break from the past old dinousaur faces with their tired brand of old school thinking. I bet you integrity will still be the missing option.

I've already begun wondering just exactly what major scam will it be this time that will trip-up the new cabinet and make it become exactly like its previous predecessor that saw anglo-leasing ghosts share the same breathing space with kroll report mentioned celebrities? Kenya's number one economic growth buster corruption is always lurking around the corner waiting for a chance to bite where it hurts the most-our collective public conscience

Inevitably in-between now and 2012 we will get distracted and thrown off our course and end up looking even worse than our politicians in whose names we are only too quick to sweat, swear and hack one another to death-but what is it we want to happen in 2012?brand new leadership and brand new ideas with the interests of the country at heart.
In looking ahead to 2012 and the future leaders of Kenya, we must not allow them to falsely believe that they can avoid the consequences of dodging responsiblity. Then will not be the time for a hands off, eyes off and ears off type of leadership in the passive running of the government.
The responsibility of governing a country justly must not become more of a burden than the job of massaging self-inflated egos filled with importance that comes from being made minister of something or the other
Lets wait and see shall we?

  2. What patience? Don't make us laugh! As soon as the next heckler suffering from full blown tribalism comes along, you will all react true to form and lap up all his incendiary and immoral verbiage, as long as he promises a place at the table.

  3. Pray, pray very hard that we live to find ourselef in one single peace come 2012. We know what we want but are we ready to sacrifice for it? Having a vision (2012) is good but not if it is premised on procrastination ala VISION 2030. It is less than 2000 days to 2012 and the cat is roaming in the wild, who will bell it?

  5. The naming of the cabinet has been delayed once more. As at this afternoon, the presuident was yet to recieve the names of the ODM Nominees. No CABINET WILL BE NAMED TOMORROW

I think Salim Lone owes me an explanation as to why he was naming a cabinet in the media without getting it from the horse's mouth. He is a media practitioner and he knows better thay yapping.

  6. There's a brand new row over the portfolio balance. I doubt whether there'll be a cabinet named tomorrow. If indeed it is named though, I fear for Kenya's fragile peace.

  8. DOMO, DOMO, DOMO, the ODM speciality has been caught napping once again. This time, at the eleventh hour, they are the ones running around to save face.

After serving Kenyans with half-baked ministerial appointments in the last two days in a wish-list that defies dreams, their chest-thumping has been dealt the worst blow since Raila Odinga accepted the PM to stop the tribal cleansing.

This afternoon, Isaiah Kabira issued a statement that the naming of the cabinet has been delayed, because Raila Odinga aka Ayatollah, the political Mullah, the prophet, has not submitted his list of hangers-on to join Kibaki in the cabinet.

Okay, the expectation and the verisimilitude that has been whetting the throats of a section of the population have been HURT once again.

In actual sense, the game that ODM has been playing in the last few days has just been scuttled.

If two people met and decided that they will have 40 ministries, where was Salim Lone to start dishing the ministerial post in the press to the applause of a section of the country’s political spectators?

Yes, he is Odinga Dictatorial Movement spokesman, meaning that what he says comes from the man himself. But when did they ever meet to agree on who takes defence, foreign affairs and local government.

Two weeks ago, I argued here that some ministries had a umbilical attachment to the presidency. Like ODM demanding Provincial Administration, Defence and Internal Security, the money-guzzling arms of the government, it was a pipe-dream so to say.

Sasa, everything will go back to Square One and what ODM had intended to do (hijack the ceremony tomorrow) will not take place. Obviously, Raila Odinga wanted to walk in with his list of nominees and start making the announcement on national TV, I believe that is what they wanted. All has been rewound three weeks back and…let the haggling continue….

    Vita vya panzi….

  16. 2012 Luke?

    Welcome to Kenya.

I am telling you this government is now living on borrowed time. I am looking at the 'Lesotho' option being the only solution that will set this country free.

Its obvious that the elections were NOT stolen by Kibaki and chronies. There is a bigger more powerful foe that Kenyans have to fight. The pintos, JMs, Mboyas, Oukos and lately Githongos of this world tried to fight it and failed. Its not about 2012 or 2017 or 2022. Its about unearthing these characters. We know them. I will offer a clue. Kenyatta.....Moi....Kibaki.....etc.

ODM pentagon are just arriving back in town after Ruto's dad funeral. Be ready for a bombshell tomorrow.

Those of us who were in Western Kenya this weekend know there's big tension building up in Kisumu, kakamega, Bungoma, Eldoret and even here in Kibera Nairobi because of the cabinet deadlock (read power sharing). Even diplomats are getting fed up of this GEMA kindergarten game!

WHAT NEXT?: Uncertainty looms over today’s unveiling of the 40-member Cabinet as PNU/Government and ODM disagree on portfolio balance even as outrage mounts over the bloated Cabinet
The much anticipated unveiling of the Grand Coalition 40-member Cabinet today was headed for a fiasco as the Party of National Unity/Government and the Orange Democratic Movement were last evening trading accusations and counter-accusations over the portfolio balance.
The ODM issued a statement last night saying it would not be party to the new Cabinet unveiled today if any of the initial agreements are reneged. The party’s Director of Communications Salim Lone said the exercise today will not take place because of emerging misunderstandings contained in a letter sent to the party by the Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Muthaura.
And in rejoinder, Government Spokesman Dr Alfred Mutua said the ODM were dragging their feet in presenting the names for appointment. He said the President has been waiting for their list in vain, adding that the President had invite the Prime Minister –designate for a meeting at Harambee House at 10am today. He gave a list of the ministries for the both sides purportedly drawn after length consultations between the two principals. (See full list on page 2).
ODM accused their PNUof trying to shortchange the Movement. The ODM said President Mwai Kibaki’s side was not honest as it was still demanding to hold onto the Local Government and Foreign Affairs ministries after an agreement earlier that the two key portfolios go to the Movement as PNU take Finance, Education, Defence and Internal Security alongside other high profile ministries.
Mohammed Isahakia from the ODM Secretariat wrote to Muthaura last night saying the party was astonished because the agreements between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister-designate Raila Odinga last Thursday had been reneged in a letter Muthaura sent to ODM yesterday. Isahakia also blamed Muthaura for failing to call a meeting between the two of them to fine tune the details of the proposed Cabinet.
The Movement claimed the PNU side had taken all the key ministries reducing the ODM to mere passengers in a PNU government. “I have therefore been directed to inform you that your request for names for appointment to the cabinet is premature in view of your new position on portfolio balance,” Isahakia letter said. He said the proposed list of ministers due to be presented today had earlier been delivered to Raila by Minister George Saitoti and flatly rejected.
Lone said Raila had termed Muthaura’s list as totally unacceptable widely leaving the fate of the highly publicized exercise this afternoon clearly uncertain.

This position was restated by Raila and over 80 party Members of Parliament who were attending the burial of Eldoret MP and Pentagon luminary William Ruto’ father, Samuel Samoei yesterday.

This position was restated by Raila and over 80 party Members of Parliament who were attending the burial of Eldoret MP and Pentagon luminary William Ruto’ father, Samuel Samoei yesterday.
And across the country Kenyans were yesterday waiting anxiety for President Kibaki to name the men and women who will make it to the Cabinet and end weeks of speculation and political bickering that has gripped the country in the past few weeks since the enactment into law of the Peace Accord. The pact that halted the mayhem that engulfed the country over the disputed December 2007 presidential poll was brokered by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
The naming of the Cabinet was set be a culmination of consultations between President Kibaki and Raila. The naming was expected to put the country on the new path to progress after literally stalling for three months following the violence sparked by the disputed polls on December 27 last year.
The anticipated 40-member Cabinet and unknown number of Assistant Ministers – the largest since the country’s independence has attracted the ire of civil society groups, churches, professional bodies and the private sector who feel that the already overburdened taxpayer will have to fork out more to sustain the politicians flying flags on state owned limousines. Critics have argued that the bloated Cabinet is aimed at assuaging the political elite at the expense of the Kenyan taxpayer.
The civil society yesterday insisted on a 24-member Cabinet and threatened to scuttle the swearing-in of the proposed Cabinet next Saturday. It would have been interesting to watch some of the politicians who have been shouting themselves hoarse over the need for “a cleaner and leaner” who may have been named ministers.
Amidst the public outcry, Kenyans must equally see the bloated Cabinet as the only reality towards inclusiveness and tackling the interests of the country’s ethnic divide.
It is not lost on many that the main grouse with the Kibaki Government as been that it wasn’t inclusive enough of all Kenyan ethnicities, gender and youth. Members of the yet to be named Cabinet will have to fend off brickbats directed at them by the citizenry and accusations that by agreeing to take up their ministerial positions, they will have turned a blind eye to the plight of the majority voters who are languishing in abject poverty.
Members of Parliament have not shied away from openly portraying themselves as unscrupulous, arrogant, insensitive, treacherous, and cruel tribal kings in canvassing for Cabinet appointments.
Few, if any of the country’s leaders and political parties can claim to have championed for national interests particularly while laying claim to the two deputy Premiers’ slots There has been no apparent systematic and deliberate encouragement to divorce tribal sentiments and regional interests even against the background that emerged from post-election.
A significant proportion of those aspiring for Cabinet slots have deliberately shielded the country from ideology based and issue oriented politics resulting in a highly ethicized and polarized nation.
The two principals will have to grapple with regional balance in cobbling up the new look Cabinet if they intend to retain loyalties they enjoyed in the run up to last year’s General Election. The Party of National Unity brigade is said to favour Prof Saitoti, Local Authorities Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Martha Karua for its allotted slot of Deputy Prime Minister.
President Kibaki is most likely going to retain those from PNU that he had appointed in the 17 member Cabinet in January with a possible inclusion of ODM-K members including Mutula Kilonzo and David Musila.
However, President Kibaki has to grapple with the growing dissent within his party ranks that have touted the name of Special Programmes Minister Noami Shabaan and Matuga Member of Parliament Chirau Ali Mwakwere for the post.
Their argument is premised on the convincing ground that since President Kibaki hails from central Kenya it would be an act of selfishness for a deputy prime minister to come from the same region.
Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi appeared to lend the assertion some credence when he argued that those canvassing for the deputy premier’s slot should consider other regions but swiftly back tracked when a deluge of criticism was directed at him by none other than legislators from his Meru ethnic background.
On his part, it will be inconceivable and political thoughtlessness for Raila to leave out William Ruto and the Rift Valley brigade from the so called prominent ministries portfolios. Having voted almost to a man for Raila in last year’s poll, Rift Valley MPs and the electorate will be keenly watching where they will be placed with a particular regard to their de facto kingpin Ruto.
However, Raila appears to have smooth sailing after virtually all regions that supported Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) agreed in consensus to have his running mate and Sabatia MP Musalia Mudavadi named to the Deputy Premier’s slot. Other ODM Pentagon members including Najib Balala, Joseph Nyagah must also be in the Cabinet.
Others names touted from ODM to the cabinet include Dr Sally Kosgei, William ole Ntimama, Professor Margaret Kamar, Orwa Ojode, Chris Okemo, Professor Anyang Nyong’o and Dalmas Otieno.

Honestly, why do we reduce politicals discusssion to cheap wordships. Jesus once said, Let the dead bury the dead! To Ruto's dad and the rest, fare thee well!
