Kumekucha Exclusive: Why Has Salim Lone Fled Kenya?

Famous Veteran Kenyan Journalist, ODM Communications Chief And Former United Nations Media Director Tells Friends That He Feared For His Life…

In the course of today (Monday Feb 18th 2008) some top ODM officials will get a little surprised when the party communications chief Salim Lone fails to return from what was supposed to be a brief trip to New York hurriedly taken last week.

The truth is that Salim Lone has been telling close friends abroad that he fled for his life from Kenya after threats from PNU. However a few things do not add up. Why keep everything secret from the ODM top brass? And if it is true that he was threatened, why has he still not gone public with the story that he has told many close friends?

Salime Lone: What scared him?

Actually Lone’s action has caused lots of anxiety amongst close analysts and observers of the Kenyan situation but before I tell you why, a brief introduction of Lone to those who may not know him is in order.

Salim Lone is a Kenyan by nationality, a veteran journalist, and former Director of the News and Media Division, Department of Public Information, of the United Nations. He has also been a rather prolific columnist for the Daily Nation and also writes regularly for The Guardian in the UK.

Salim Lone was director of the news and media division (1998-2003) during his twenty one year career at United Nations headquarters. His last assignment was as spokesman for the UN mission in Iraq immediately after the US-led 2003 war and occupation.
Lone was the founding editor of the pioneer woman’s monthly in Kenya, Viva in the 70s and was in fact forced to flee the country during the early Moi years fearing arrest for some of his political pieces in Viva a magazine. That was what led to his arrival in New York and a 21 year career at the UN. Still he is no stranger to harassment from Kenyan security agents in those terrible years of limited press freedom where numerous activists disappeared and brave writers disappeared without trace.

So the truth is that Lone does not scare easily. That is why analysts are ev en more worried and are wondering what exactly caused the ODM communications director to suddenly hop onto a plane and flee.

Admittedly, it seems clear that Lone no longer felt safe in Kenya. But what is this threat which ODM and Raila Odinga could NOT adequately protect him from? And why keep his intentions secret by telling ODM colleagues that he was away briefly and would be back by Monday (today)?

Clearly Lone knows something that many of us do not know yet. One theory is that he was made aware that...

  2. Salim went to New York to spread ODM message to his friends and convince the wider community in regard to ODN's position and claim. The current spokesperson of the UN is an Indian, he is nudging that guy and many other fellows to accept ODM version. For his insecurity, it is there but also it is to shame Kibaki by potraying his regime a bunch of assassins. Otherwise, as Raila's spokesman, he must have talked to him about the trip, why, where, when and etc.

Kibaki got 17% of votes in nyanza, 30% in Western, 35% in Rift Valley, 35% in Coast, 51% in North Eastern. So which are these 41 tribes that you are talking about. The tribal card you guyz keep using is becoming stale. So why were Luhya's, Kisii's, kamba's been chased out of Rift Valley, was it not because they voted for Kibaki. If at all you think Kiuks are the problem, then get rid of them if you think the country will be safe after that. by the way there are about 8 million kiuks. You will need butchers who will work overtime. After you are done, there is another, 2 million kisii, 3 Merus, embu's and mbeeres. When you are finally done deal with 3.8 million kaos. not to mention turkanas, maasais, taitas, pokomos, boranas, somalis, rendiles...etc.

  7. Detain all pentagon members and their close associates? Were the situation in Kenya not so grim this idea would have been amusing. But there's not telling what Kibaki and his cabal of hardliners might do if pushed to the extreme. He may have a few more cards up his sleeve but if he resorts to detention without trial he'll have given a whole new meaning to 'clinging to power'. Not that he cares. He could also stand a very good chance of loosing even the fanatical support coming from some regions although that may not bother him too such either. I doubt those Mount Kenya MPs who of late have become so fond of press conferences will be anywhere to be seen. Who will want to be a part of what might follow such an irrational move?

  8. LET HIM TRY THAT AND WE WILL KNOW THAT HE IS A MAN ENOUGH. THAT WILL BE THE END OF KENYA.

  9. Salim Lone is getting what he deserves. Just from no where, Kenyas were treated to a rude shock when a muhindi guy started talking on behalf of ODM.
What Salim Lone did not know was the fact taht he was up against so much even in the ODM camp. Please leave PNU out of this.
In the ODM camp, we have people who love to hog the limelight. Chief among these is none other than the good professor, Anyang Nyong--, Ruto follows suit, although he has taken his act to the underground level, (because of the rumored genocide trial by the GOK?)and then the master supremo himself. Raila Amollow.

In toto, there are many who want to take his position...and he went for greener pastures. This Muhindi should know that Pakistani is having elections today and there will be a big chance of DOMOKAYARING there.
Lone realized taht there is no beating or organizing ODM in their DOMO and clamor for the Press conference limelight!.

  10. Anon 4.54 you are so bitter about the ref to 41 other tribes yet you shameless quote the Stolen results as your point of reference?
Kibaki is alienating the Kikuyus with the help of Martha, Kimunya, Beth Mugo and all other stupid fools that love to shout for the entire world to see!
If you are a peace loving Kenyan you could join the rest of us against these thugs who have no idea the definition of the word Kenyans!
No one wants to Kill Kikuyus but they seem hell bent on finishing themselves bcoz even if they know Kibaki is taking us to Hell they would rather stick by him instead of telling him the truth.
Even if you prefer to delude yourself the taitas, Pokomos, Kisii's, Luhyas , etc and fed up of Kibaki and his group of arrogant brigades.
You have to be living out of Kenya not to know this!!!

I'm a Somali and we didn't vote for Kibaki. There was massive and broad day light rigging in NEP. It is a fact with hard evidence and all the DCs and PCS and Intelligence Chief of NEP except one were Kikuyus. It was worked on it but the people knew. ODM has 7 NEP MPs, one more nominted by ODM. Mrs Sofia from Garissa and Farah maalim is the deputy speaker. And they will get a new one through a by-election. Kibaki doesn't represent us, we don't want him, we don't like him, he is ugly, stupid and a senile octogenarian who happens to be the oldest most notorious thief. Leave my people alone and look for new ones. Stupid. The Somalis met and agreed to be in ODM and with ODM. Even when ugly Kibaki appointed Yusuf Haji to the Defence ministry, the elders told him to "keep off" and maintain a low profile so that he doesn't pit the community against ODM tribes which virtually control 6 provinces. And he agreed. He even suspended the MPs reconcialiation nonsense since he was from PANUA side and got lost. Today he stays at his home and doesn't care whether ugly Kibaki survives or not. Kibaki is hated by 41 tribes, period. Go and fly now.

Don't fool yourself that kisii are in the same boat with the GEMA. I am one and though we have also been chased out of RV we will not stand with kikuyus because they continue to support the man who has plunged my country into chaos even when all the evidence is there that he stole the elections.
We kisii have seen how kikuyus have been appointed to all public organisations for the last 5 years without regard to equity and fairness and a cabinet post to Ongeri and a nomination to Nyamweya will not blind us.
Carry your own cross iitwayo kibaki and leave us out!

So please do not lump as with thieves. We remain with the rest of Kenya in fighting for justice and those GEMA who can see the light are welcome.

  20. The Anons who replied to Anon @ 4:54 have no justification in alluding to the fact that their communities did not vote for Kibaki. As far as i'm concerned, each one of you has got only one vote. That is why we had secret ballot. You can imagine Kibaki must have been a very good thief to get all those votes in Nyanza, Western, Coast and Rift Valley. (Of course he won in the remaining four provinces.) You can imagine if Odomers were allowed to vote using the que voting system they may have won with a big margin. Remember empty debes...

  21. I recently pumped into a very angry lady at the posta office. From now here, she started talking of how she wanted to get back to the home as quickly as possible, take a shower, and put on different inner clothes.
Out of curiosity, I asked her what was going on. With great anger and pain that unfortunately she would not hide, she started to narrate how she has mistakenly gone into a tombacco storehouse and how, in a matter of seconds, she came out smelling like some one who had been smoking the whole day. ” I am so sorry,” was all that I would say.

On my way home, I found myself seriously thinking about spouses and children who find themselves in a similar situation: Think with me if you can on the following:

    1. Think of a spouse who drinks alcoholic beverages like bear and the impact it has on the other partner and the children.

    2. Think about a spouse who smokkes and the impact it has on the other partner and children.

    3. Think of a spouse who eats gharlic onion and the impact it has on the other partner and the children. This is a very powerful onion that has great smell. Many familes have been broken due to the smell of gharilic onion. Why do you keep on eating it?

Well, this is one of those things that I find very challenging indeed! How they do it, only God knows.

My humble appeal to those who either drink or smoke and eat Gharlic onion on the side, is to take time out and ask yourself hard heart searching questions. Do you love your spouse and children? Do you care about your actions or it doesn’t bother you at all? What will it take you to get rid of the habit?
Do you need help to stop all these especially eating gharlic onion?

  27. America propose REAL power sharing

REAL means proportionate to parliamentary seats won?

...Rice said that the two parties should share real power and that both sides should have authority that matters.

“There needs to be a governance arrangement that will allow real power-sharing ... a grand coalition so that Kenyans can be governed," she told reporters at US Ambassador Michael Rannenberger’s residence...

Rice backs power sharing in Kenya crisis

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said Kenya feuding parties should share power so as to end the post-election crisis.

She was sent to the country by President Bush, who is on a five-nation Africa tour, to help push the Kofi Annan-led mediation process forward.

Rice said that the two parties should share real power and that both sides should have authority that matters.

“There needs to be a governance arrangement that will allow real power-sharing ... a grand coalition so that Kenyans can be governed," she told reporters at US Ambassador Michael Rannenberger’s residence.

She said the US was ready to offer its help in reconstruction of the country and that Kenya stood to gain with the resolution of the crisis.

"There is a lot to be gained in a relationship with the United States through resolution of this political crisis."

Secretary Rice warned that it will not be business as usual with Kenya if the crisis is not resolved quickly. She added that a political solution was needed fast.

Rice said that the international community was not dictating to the government, but was backing Annan’s effort to broker a deal.

ODM leader Raila Odinga says he won the December poll but was denied victory through rigging, while President Kibaki says he won fairly and points to the announcement by the Electoral Commission of Kenya.

The post election violence, which triggered protests, has killed 1,000 people and displaced 300,000 others.

I have to correct you on this Salim Lone issue, and this I got from very reliable ODM sources and long before you mentioned it here. Yes Salim fled Kenya, but he did not flee last week. He has been gone close to a month now, anybody keen enough would have realized that by now. It is true that Salim and ODM top brass got intelligence that Salim's life was in danger. And contrary to what the editor has mentioned here, it is the ODM top brass who advised Salim to take a time-out "briefly." I am suprised it took this long for you people to notice his absence. This issue of him going away without the knowledge of the too ODM brass is therefore pure hogwash.

As RO says below, it is not a love affair!-reuters

U.S. wants Kenya crisis solution "yesterday"

Government officials have become increasingly prickly over foreign pressure. On the eve of Rice's visit, Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula warned that nobody should "make any mistake of putting a gun to anybody's head."

But Rice, noting she had been "especially moved" listening to Kenyan civil society and business representatives, said the pressure was coming from within not abroad.

"Kenya is a friend. Kenya is also an independent and proud country ... So this is not a matter of dictating a solution to Kenyans," she said. "What I hear is the impatience and insistence of Kenyans that this is resolved."

Both sides of Kenya's political divide have agreed to an independent review of the contested ballot -- but not what to do about it or what form a shared administration might take.

Having missed Annan's target for a deal by last week, negotiators are due to resume talks on Tuesday.

Government officials have said the only power-sharing being considered is giving opposition members ministries in Kibaki's half-filled cabinet.

After meeting Rice, Odinga gave a news conference outlining his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party's proposals for a new position of prime minister, shared executive authority, and a fresh presidential election within two years.

"This is not a love affair. It's something they must do, as the whole world is telling them," Odinga said, when asked if Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU) would agree. Continued...

If it is true that the hardliners are on him, then he should stand up as a patriot,if one as he claims.
He has more to lose than gain if he yields to them.
He needs to rise up to the occassion and do whats good for Kenya.why?

    - his people (Kikuyus) are losing more than anybody else in this crises.Businesses are dead. Those in Diaspora,Mainly Rift valley will never forgive him for their suffering
-His previous image is in tatters. He will go down as the man who delivered the country to the dogs/civil war.He cant escape from this
-He has achieved his long term goal of being a President.so what else can he gain by being obstinate?
-He is in his sunset years.A grand father who we dont expect to deliver anything more to Kenya
    - He has done best for his family. They are secure for life. Being obstinate threatens this.
-He has made Moi look like an angel. Not a very nice position for any Kenyan leadertoday.
-Leaders are remembered , not for good but bad acts/effects they had on their people.Hitler,Bokas,Amin more remembered than those who delivered "good" to their subjacts. It is good to be famous in this way, but also very bad to condemn their children to misery and rejection.does it pay?

Please let us listen to what Sam Okello is telling us at this critical juncture of our country's history,
Using a brilliant mixture of facts, foretelling, prophecy, wit and humor, Sam Okello managed to show that GEMA has an insatiable appetite for power.
The book, HER EXCELLENCY, which is a major expose of GEMA and Lucyy Kibaki, is a sober reminder of what can happen to a society when one group considers itself to have the sole stronghold of land, sea and air.
We should have our politics informed by sober analysis of issues. This book, by Sam Okello (this time not done together with Marianne Briner) is a classic of our times. It behooves us, young and old, all and sundry, to get ourselves a copy and read it.

I am glad I read this book, and I dont regret the decision. I am looking forward to read other good books written by a young and upcoming writer and social/political commentator and analyst, Sam Okello!

  50. Anon @4.54.

Your point misses fundamental issues. The percentages and support that you claim Kibaki got in Nyanza etc. Remember that the figures are based on inflated amounts as released by ECK. Analysts believe Kibaki failed to even meet the 25%-5 provinces requirement. What does this tell you, the Boranas, Somalis, Bukusus voted for Kibaki, but not in the percentages you you currently believe. Kibaki got 25% only in Eastern, Nairobi, Central and Rift Valley. Even Bukusus did not really vote for Kibaki in significant numbers. How else does one explain Kombo and Kituyi being voted out. Wetangula rigged himself in, so dont count him in.

Kisiis, Luhyas are being chased from rift valley coz the Kalenjins believe it is thier land. It is not because they voted for Kibaki. Wake up. Even if Kikuyus voted against Kibaki, the land issue will still not be solved

  52. Asians - 3rd/4th generation Asians and Asians who have taken Kenya citizenship like others have an inalienable right to be in Kenya - they ought to be referred to as Indian Africans or Indo Africans; for the above who said: see you in India and Om Shanti etc - grow up!!; in a globalized world pluralism (be it any tribe) is in ; resources, aid, investment, and goodwill flow to countries that have good governence, accept pluralism and have a good human rights record. If you don't get with it, there will be no material progress; people have enough to eat, free health and there is peace in Havana tonight.

  54. I repeat again Kenya ni yetu sisi wote i quote Jaramogi ...Kenya is marwa.....Let no one think they own Kenya more than others.....But the issue of land must be resolved, kama mlinyakua roho safi mrudishe......And let us respect one another...The bottom line is this the elections were stolen period...It doesn't matter who stole PNU, ODM what we need to know is who is the legitimate president of Kenya and the only way is by re-run....Salim Lone worked hard for ODm, those speeches DICK Morris kando, and i am proud for he was one of our own Kenyan...Big ups to him and other like minded asians who are proud to be kenyans..I salute you wherever you are and keep safe. The body they can kill but the soul cannot he touched

  56. For those who think we are palying kati or kalongo games everything is ok and life is back to normal.
If you want the truth of the situation ask the Kyuks who tried to sell Veges in Oyugis in the neighbourhood where a family lost 10 members- burnt to death!
Ask the Luos and Luhyas who have to learn Kyuk to get houses in some localities.
Salim Lone being with ODM understands how bad things are.
The fuel is still waiting to be ingnited the fire put out recently was just a ''baby'' fire.
If Martha and Wetangula continue playing Kalongo they will realise way too late their error.
For those praying- pray hardest for these arrogant souls so they do not lead all of us to a Hell hole where everyone of us will sink......

  59. The Waryaa claims that all Somalis voted ODm, Which Somali does he speak for? I know several that voted for Kibaki. Besdies, kwani nyinyi ni kondoo hati mpaka you should be told who to vote for in bulk. Dont you have your own independent minds? I suppose that is what you call democracy ODM-style.
Mezeni wembe- a coalition govt is already in place in kenya and Kibaki is the prezzy hata kama angeshinda na kura moja he would still be president. ODM can go warm the opposition benches. Screaming rigging even before elections na mpaka leo you have NEVER shown any evidence infact you are begging for cabinet posts from the same leader that you trashed? Where are your principles?

  60. James Kabondi"Salim Lone is getting what he deserves.

Lone realized taht there is no beating or organizing ODM in their DOMO and clamor for the Press conference limelight!.

c-ya Salim Lone; Om Shanti Shanti Shanti."

    5:37 AM

Yours is the same mentality that has made us the laughing stock of the world. I used to be proud to say that I am kenyan but today I whisper it with my head low.
This guy you call muhindi has done more for Kenya than you ever will. He wrote against Moi and was forced to exile. And when he was spokesman for the united nations we were all proud of him as a fellow kenyan and for flying our flag high. He quit his job at the UN in 2002 because he was promised the post of govt. spokesman and he wanted to serve his nation. But of course he was dumped and the job given to Spindoctor Mutua.
Imagine how things would have been different if we had Lone as spokesman instead of this clown.
This tribalism and racism in kenya should stop if we want violence to end and never to come again. Arabs and Indians arrived on the Kenyan coast in the 10th century, long before some of the so-called indeginous tribes arrived. Some fought for our indepence and later fought against dictatorship, paying the ultimate price sometimes like Pinto did. But until today we still refer to them as non-indeginous because of the colour of their skins. This is the same racism we complain about when we are abroad but we practise it without a blink ourselves.
Kenya needs all her honest and devoted sons and daughters. Nobody should be paid to pay for the sins of a few, Kila mtu atabeba msalaba wake.
Kenyans we should unite, people are dying, we should forget trivialities rise up to the leaders who are using us to achieve their selfish interests while to them the only tribe they are affiliated to is money and their families.
Look at how they are taking their time with the negociations, do you see a sense of urgency in them? Do you see people who have the dying and starving kenyans in their hearts, knowing that they hold the key to the solution? No!! In fact more and more evidence is emerging that they are fuelling the violence. Amkeni wananchi, it has been said and I shall say it again, No kenyan politician is worth dying for!

  61. Until you ODMers learn that playing the GEMA ethnic card is now old hat, like a car spinning wheels on the same muddy spot but the drunken driver thinks he is cruising on Uhuru highway. You will keep getting political lessons daily until you remove the blinkers from your eyes. Raila has not achieved a single one of his demands since the elections and right now, he is about to betray you and accept a position in Kibaki's cabinet as Prime Minister with no real power.hehehe! Watch this space.

  62. MZALENDO...

Good points but saying that racism/tribalism should stop now...is being far fetched. Kenya runs on tribes and tribalism is alive and well, and the politicians know this, and they use it to their advantage.

RUTO Knows this, he incites his people to go burn women and kids in a church.

RAILA kNOWS Tribalism exists, he campaigns on an anti-kikuyu platform, and when in rift valley he says "hatutaki madoadoa"

all these are power hungry Men and sorry to say, they have very sweet tongues that tell the mases what they want to hear and their masses are like sheep, follow without instruction.

I mean all My ODM Collegeus, didn't you see the hypocrisy and selfishness of your leaders when they accepted the presidents summon to parliament to be sworn in and get that fat 800K a month while at the same time calling all the ghetto youth to protest in the street?

Can't yu see the hypocrisy of your leaders in agitating for a PM and deputy PM Posts all for what ? More government expenditures in creating these non-relevant posts.

Don't yu smell foul play when modertae, young and progressive ODM Mp's die in wierd circumstances ?

while you bitch and mourn, do u not know that the rest of kenyans are tired of the ODM garbage? people are taking their kids to school, running their businesses, taking their kids to high school with subsidised fees ...

For how long will you blindly follow these visonless leaders who have yet to pay for their crimes?
Trust me, William RUTO has a case to answer...

    guys, think, think, think
and for these people claiming that since they individaully didn't vote for kibai, then the rest of their tribesmen didn't..as one guy asked, kwani nyinyi ni kondoo ????

At least kibaki got 17% in Nyanza, and I know it's painful to accept, but yu guys need to understand that time ran out long ago for these ODM goons, kina ruto and all. all this mediation is ajust buying time, once annan leaves, the real work will begin!
