Breaking News: Talks Now Dead and Buried

Koffi Annan has officially suspended mediation talks. The charade that has been fashioned as mediation between PNU and ODM has forced Kofi Annan to officially suspend the talks. Livid Annan could not stand the deception any more and has called the mediators bluff.

To avert immediate OUTRAGE, Annan has promised to seek direct and personal support of the chief protagonists in Kibaki and Raila. That is akin to hanging HOPE by a bare thread. Mediation talks officially dead. Back to square one. So here we are folks staring abyss and a boiling brimstone behind us. Behind Anna's DIPLOSPEAK hides a smouldering mortar. When it explodes is a matter of time and not if. Tic tok tic tok.........

  1. Statement on Kenya Political Solution
    Secretary Condoleezza Rice
    Office of the Spokesman
    Washington, DC
    February 26, 2008

The United States is a strong friend and partner of Kenya. Since the outset of the electoral crisis, we have urged a political solution acceptable to the Kenyan people. The crescendo of peaceful voices continues to mount from a broad range of civil society organizations, churches, and directly from the Kenyan people on the need for a political solution. I join my voice to that of the Kenyan people.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the eminent persons have been engaged in intensive efforts to help the parties achieve a solution. I strongly support those efforts. Last week President Kibaki and the Honorable Raila Odinga assured me of their commitment to work out a structure for the real sharing of power to govern the country. While some progress has been made, I am disappointed by the failure of leadership necessary to resolve all the remaining issues. There can be no excuse for further delay. There can also be no excuse for violence, and those responsible must be held accountable.

Last week I conveyed to both sides the commitment of President Bush and the United States Government to support a political solution and to provide the additional assistance that Kenyans' will need to rebuild, to reconcile, and to carry out institutional reforms.

I want to emphasize that the future of our relationship with both sides and their legitimacy hinges on their cooperation to achieve this political solution. In that regard, we are exploring a wide range of possible actions. We will draw our own conclusions about who is responsible for lack of progress and take necessary steps. We will also exert leadership with the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and others to ensure that the political solution the Kenyan people deserve is achieved.

  3. Chris. You are very right. For Kibaki's government to survive outside of a coalition/transitional arrangement, he must slash the legs of every dissenter. He must in fact detain or force to exile all the prominent ODM politicians and anti-establishment human rights crusaders. This he must do in a very fast and precise manner. That such devious plots are in the offing at State House is a forgone conclusion. Kibaki has drank from the rusty chalice of death and so far he loves it. You see, the idiot has ordered the police to shoot and kill demonstrators for democracy, but that has not deterred most. He has killed opposition MPs but that has not deterred most. He has curtailed the freedom of press but that has not deterred most (thanks to alternative news outlets such as this one). He has abused Kofi and ridiculed the peace process but that has not deterred most. His only option now is to send Kofi back to Ghana thereafter embark on squeezing the balls of everybody who does not toe the PNU line. You have already seen what Uhuru has tried to accomplish in Mayoral elections.

  4. Two things are going to happen. We are either going to bloody civil war today or we are going to wait for a nastier war in future. This is the thing that Karua has refused to admit. Since she has been pumped with the vile seeds of heavy hate, all she can produce is the fruits of incredible hate. Like most of the PNU sympathizers, this woman is very shortsighted. It is her strong belief that PNU can single-handedly deliver peace and prosperity to all Kenyans in every community. Even the most dimwitted Mungiki tout knows that is an impossibility.

  5. People can say that the violence going on today is unwarranted. They may even say that they have no clue where it all began. Some refuse to recognize the roots of these evils. This is what I have to say; no living Kenyan today must ever ask or wonder about the causes of the next large scale massacre. It may happen tomorrow or twenty years from today. If you are Kikuyu, you must never ask again why non-GEMA people hate and distaste your presence. The answer lies in what Kibaki is doing today. If you are Luo, you must never ask why the GEMA hate and distaste your existence. The answer lies in what Kibaki is propagating today. If you are Kalenjin, you must never ask why GEMA hates your guts. The answer lies in how Kibaki is handling himself today.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, always remember to tell your children that it was Kibaki who refused peace. It was Kibaki who supported the currently tattered constitution. It is Kibaki who stole the election. It is Kibaki who refused land reform and therefore led to the burning of children in churches. It is Kibaki who refused CHANGE!!

…..and it is Derek and Irene who supported him.

  6. THE PNU MASTER PLAN STILL TRYING TO WORK HERE!! DID THEY COMPLETE THE LIST WITH THE END OF THE TALKS???

KENYANS THIS IS WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH PLEASE REMEMBER!!(list given by PNU MP)
    READ

    ACTION POINTS

Action Point - Truth Prevalence or Lack thereof
PNU and Kenya Government need to rise up NOW! If they can’t find any in their midst, hire the worlds top guns in the field of public propaganda and media savvy-ness.

Media Perception needs to be TOP of everything. Get the truth out in all the media and those who refuse to carry the story, pay for the adverts! That should be done in ALL the media outlets, with intensity especially in the neutral and ODM areas. The Goal is to inject doubt on the ODM victory in preparation of the TRUTH coming out. Insist on results from the PNU media strategy think-tank. They are being paid for results.

Action Point – Publicly Challenge ODM

Rather than just pay for Adverts seeking the truth and challenging Raila and ODM, these are the very exact questions Kibaki; yes the President himself. And he needs personally ask those questions on national TV and Radio. He needs to keep saying the same things over and over in English (Yes, English, his Kiswahili awful).

Arrange for well publicized press conferences with question and answer sessions....in English. The man is extremely eloquent and needs nobody to write speeches for him, as long as he does them in English. Others around him can do the Kiswahili versions on his behalf. Then let him mention and challenge Raila and Ruto by name.

Yes challenge them personally and put them on the defense. Other PNU and PNU friendly officials go after their counterparts in ODM. Kibaki takes the challenging lead role and others follow. Let Kalonzo talk peace and show dictatorial tendencies of the entire ODM leadership and hence his jumping ship with ODM-K. Make public tours and repeat the same challenges over and over.

Action Point - ODM Rigged Big time
Get folks in ALL suspicious ODM areas where the vote was stolen in favor of ODM to file petitions in court. Prevail on the courts to move with speed and urgency to nullify the elections if the voters are indeed dead or could not have voted.

This is a public safety issue and public security. Give it top priority. Hire more Judges if necessary to handle other cases while the more respected and experienced judges handle the election petitions. This is part of the negotiation ODM is pretending to ask for - speedy resolution of election cases.

    Action Point - Preaching Peace
Get ALL religious leaders and community leaders preach UNITY like NEVER before. For example, get popular pop stars, local and international to participate in peace rallies. So what the government pays for them directly or otherwise. It’s about endearing the masses for the sake of peace. Get the Muslim leaders to condemn violence. Islam is a peaceful and compassionate religion, not the radical fundamentalism painted by the west.

The government should embrace and echo that fact over and over. Have interdenominational prayers by all major religions. Condemn ODM style violence and senseless loss of life. Use Burnt Forrest as an example - always.

    Action Point - Demonize Majimbo
Make MAJIMBO synonymous with VIOLENCE and discrimination and an excuse for wanton destruction of life and property.

Mount similar campaigns like those by ODM and condemn violence and insist on peace and amicable resolution of disputes in courts. Get all the top-guns to go for peace and ONE nation, One Country under the rule of law NOT lawless disputes on the streets as rallying points. Always mention Majimbo on the same sentence with Raila, Ruto and Chaos and loss of life.

Show that it is a hate campaign designed to bring chaos. Repeat the church burning and tossing of the 3yr old as what Majimbo means. We are all brothers in one family called Kenya. Show how Kibaki has been all-inclusive president but was railroaded by a disgruntled minority after the referendum to snatch power illegally. Drum it in, over and over.

    Action Point- Act on Corruption
Get all those corruption cases on the likes of Ruto, Mudavadi and Murungaru on fast track. Show that ODM is a worthy opponent with good points but those good points are being tarnished by corrupted individuals. Name them by pointing to corruption cases.

Make them pay for the corruption. Please the West that cries for corruption cases and jail terms. Kosgey and Ruto should be first closely followed by other dirty individuals even in Kibaki camp. The country is much more important than a few rotten but friendly eggs. The point is to be seen to be taking action on corruption…remember the perception factor?

Action Point - Act on Violence Masterminds
With the Intelligence on hand, prosecute RUTO, Alexanda Sitienei and accomplices on RV clashes. Damage has been done in RV so, no worse could happen with the Kalejin vote. Get others on incitement charges.

Make tribal clashes look REALLY BAD AND BARBARIC. Let everyone frown on the primitive nature associated with it in this day and age. Several people must face the law and indeed long jail terms, really long. They should be highly publicized cases.

    Action Point - Public Thoroughfare
Make blocking public roads look so bad and make bandits blocking such roads as economic saboteurs and potential murderers and robbers. They are basically criminals up to no good.

The motive for such closures is always to cause trouble, rob, maim and even kill in the mayhem. Execute shoot to kill orders for blocking roads. Move with speed. (Try blocking I-95 in the US with barricades and see what will happen, human rights will be forgotten!)

Action Point - Increase the Police Force
It’s a known fact that in Kenya, the police and armed forces in general are seriously outnumbered per capita (to the general public) going by world standards.

Hire extensively and fast track police training to maintain peace. Have local policing to maintain peace and above all avoid local thuggery. Borrow a leave from the extremely functional Tanzanian policing system: Security is everyone’s concern; national police is a supplement to help the locals as they maintain and manage peace, not the other way round as it is in Kenya.

    Action Point - International Mediation
Invite International mediators and show the facts and especially as they favor the government side.

If for instance President John Kafour was railroaded with un-orthodox documents out of character and disingenuous procedures, let the government have President Kafour talk about it to the world media.

Let the Kenya public hear it over and over again. Have public debates on it. Always focus and shape the public debate in PNU favor. Never play catch up to the opposition.

Senior government officials participating in such talks should give a public report as much and as often as necessary. You know the opposition will rush with biased information, act to beat them in the press game.

Action Point - Look to the future
With VP Kalonzo secure on the government side, let him take the lead in the Peace initiatives with the President taking a commanding role and being publicly visible. Have an internal move to put ODM-Kenya and PNU friendly parties into one. This becomes a HUGE advantage to Kalonzo who should be preparing for the 2012 Presidential elections. Get the Coast and Western Provinces fully behind the new unity party, whatever its name. DO NOT RELENT on the Media and wooing the youth in the new-Kalonzo unity initiative.

Always give a forward looking, confident, inspiring and highly optimistic future with the young fully incorporated.

Action Point – Keep Central Out of the limelight
Central and GEMA tribes, the so-called Mount Kenya Mafia are Kenya’s favorite punching bags in the political arena.

Keep the GEMA group in crucial supportive roles behind the scenes. Kamba and other non-GEMA tribes to be seen leading the imitative but not prominent in its formation. Have GEMA 100% behind Kalonzo with Western Kenya, Coast, N. Eastern and Rift Valley prominent in the new unity outfit. With such Strong unity and a corruption free progressive government, ODM will be struggling.

Kalonzo should take that lead with public blessings of the president. With KANU left as a skeleton, a single strong united party, extremely disciplined should be the force required to confront ODM in the coming and inevitable battles in parliament and public Perception.

Action Point – The Raila Factor
Get the public talking about loss of life in the abortive 1982-coup attempt and the Dec 27, 2007 election aftermath. Connect the dots with public utterances on Raila to mean disgruntled, willing to kill and circumvent the law for leadership sake. The ODM adherents went with the winning propaganda party that looked like it would win with GEMA as the poster boys of ridicule, and it worked.

Never relent on the violence and Raila’s desire to be president whatever the cost, including loss of life. Do whatever it takes to turn tables around for all to embrace each and all, irrespective of tribe. It can be done!

Action Point – The Youth Factor
The Youth must be incorporated in this new unity initiative. It needs to be fashioned in such a way to look like it is the Youths initiative, progressive, non-tribal and chic!

If a young person has to be progressive and forward looking then one has to be made to be spearheading the new initiative that truly condemns and shuns violence and dismiss it. Strengthen the Women and Youth Development funds. Give credit to the Government.

Action Point – The Western World Motive
Insist on the motive for the Western government to ridicule and point a finger at Kibaki. Show publicly with convincing figures and graphs what the West lost in terms of no-bid government contracts with business moving to China. Show how they refused to support Kibaki after the contracts were cancelled.

Show high tax collection and how it has been put to excellent use. Show budget supported by 95% local revenue. Show development was across the land before the violence. Show pictures of before and after. Show the West motive is to subjugate and domineer the poor countries and Kibaki managed to break free. Breaking free meant that the rest of the Poor countries were being shown the way forward by Kenya, and that the West can’t afford that. Show the WTO policies and how Eastern facing by Kibaki (Read China) is bad for the West and Great for Kenya and poor nations. Bring the contradictions of Raila courting Muslims by day and the West by night.

All the actions should be thoughtfully timed with the public debate always insisting on peace and progress. Encourage others to acknowledge the Kibaki splendid record. YOUTH MUST of necessity, be at the core of the all these initiatives.

After all, the future of the country (and indeed the kingdom of God) belongs to such as these young… Actually work has been cut for PNU side: just use the now infamous ODM Poll Strategy document only this time for positive outcome. Use similar SWOT analysis and above all, have the outcome ACTED upon. Swing this thing around using their weapon, clearly thought out action plans with specific goals and objectives with action-oriented operatives.

This is serious business to be executed corporate style. No roadside or broadside statement declarations.

No statement to be issued unless approved by the core think-tank. It’s a high stakes game by very senior management professionals.

  8. The solution is easy.
Throw Raila and Ruto in prison, let them cool their hills in Kamiti pending further investigation. Things will be quiet from there, and the work will continue to continue!

Kenya is not a monkey to be given a banana. Kibaki is tired of donating power to DOMO and they cannot accept. The winner chooses to donate power to the loser. That is what PRESIDENT Kibaki is diong, donating power to Dictatorsip Odinga Movement.

    Yours sincerely

He may have the state machinery, but Kenyans have a much more powerful machine, and they must use it to paralyse every function of the illegal govt and their businesses. With the threatening sanctions and visa bans looming, Kibaki's balls must be squeezed, unless he has none left until such a point that he cannot agonise anymore.

And one more time, did you all thought Kibaki rigged the elections and siege power to just give out the same powers two months later? Come sons and daughters of Kenya. He will never, whether you all like or not. One main reason among many others is that we are dealing with a retarded guy. This is our new Robert Mugabe ladies and gentlemen.

Also, when I posted here later that a coup is the best answer, didn’t Taabu questioned that? Or have you all forgotten? Didn’t President Kagame reiterate the same thing a week later?

Face this rightfully and painfully ladies and gentlemen. Unless a coup is used, please brace yourselves for another 5 or 10 years under Kibaki and Uhuru.

  20. This is Africa guys...Diplomacy is Hogwash for African leaders.Let's call a spade a spade....Fire is fought with fire. Far too long, this senile Kikuyu thinks Kenya belongs to them.News Flash! We are waiting with bated breaths.Kibaki wants to rule by force, and we will not allow it to happen.

For those who want to beleive that revolutionaries regrouping and strategising in many parts of Kennya today are illiterate angry souls are wrong. Some of us left good jobs overseas to come work with minds of freedom.Kenya has true patriots, those who beleive in justice and equality, opportunity spread to all, Every Kenyan with equal chance to prosper and culture, and and we fight for a complete Kenya,we fight for the Kikuyus too..and we fight anyone who tries to maintain the status quo..in this case the Kikuyu old guard.
Yes,This is the mark of militancy,as no talks can restore justice. Some of us have been watching Kenya disintergrate since 2003, and its only through rugged revolt and resistance that true dialogue can begin.

Though we are not fighting for ODM, we are increasingly justified by kibaki's total goof and disrespect to the current mediation talks.

I am blogging from somehwhere called Kipchimchim, outskirts of Kericho. So those thinking kenyans in the bush are tired, only need know how far reaching our network and tentacles reach.I hide nothing here, for this is an open war,and purpose of this blogging is to demonstarte one thing..we in the villages aree keeping track about our chances of victory, with all means open to us.

The reality is,the militancy is well oiled, organised and ready to face it.We know the ful force the government is wiling to fight back, but,we are ready,to fight,to die, to seek true independence.Liberia,Sierra Leonne..on the verge of restoration and growth...but they paid the price.Kenya follows suit.Post election violence were sponatineous..i know...i took part....but this time....God be with us all.

This time however, no one in particular is worn down by their strategy to buy time.
Yes, Kofi Annan will go back to Geneva but guys, there are millions of Kenyans (including women and children) who know and are prepared to take up the struggle a notch higher. No freedom struggle comes easy; and in retrospect the collapse of the Annan talks is a blessing in disguise.

  29. I predict that the country will explode into chaos in the next few days and the toll that will have on the economy will force the gvt to reconsider their hard stance.

Remember that those around Kibaki have the most to lose when the economy collapses yet they are the ones who will go down last.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't know why people are surprised at these collapsed talks.

Didn't anyone know that Kibaki was just using delaying tactics while at the same time getting ready to do the "real work" i.e. going after the perps of the violence and all the militia?

The gvt wants to chop the legs of the opposition by destroying all thes emilitias, perp sponsors, inciters, financiers, etc.

Once those legs are chopped off, the gvt wants the opposition to have no feet to stand on, and that's when they'll come back and "re-negotiate". basically the gava will them "Look, we still have these available cabinet positions vacant...r u still interested...?"

The opposition knowing it's militia has been destyoyed will be forced to take thes bread crumbs.

So, don't act surprised coz of these failed talks. It's about Power and maintaining it in kenya.

Raila should find a way of distancing himself from RUTO, coz man RUTO is too much baggage. He should also tell people like Balala that making such hateful inciting statements dosen't help

    ReplyDelete

If you and your PNU think that by 'chopping' the legs of the militias in Kenya, Kibaki will have a free hand in ruling you another thing coming for you.

    Remember Rwanda and it's declaration?

You can take this to the bank, Kibaki is not going to last 5 years and a rebel force from outside the country is going to enter Kenya soon after Annan leaves.

You can take that to your PNU masters.

PNU will not give an inch. we are already impoverished, and cannot be impoverished further. liberation can only make things start to get better in the long run for RV, nyanza, western, NE, coast.
kibaki is not just a conman but a fool

  35. ODM is better off taking nothing than taking crumbs.Taking crumbs will only legitimise Kibaki's position in a 5 year war.

And if ODM takes nothing my vote goes to Ruto 2012

  36. Anon@10:00

I agree with you, Ruto is the man holding ODM together. Infact he has my vote for President anytime. Now we need his leadership in the rebellion against Kibaki. Raila can be the leader of the political wing of the movement and frankly I think he (Raila) is too scared to confirm the west’s portrayal of him as a radical.

    Anon@10:00

Rebellion is the only way forward. You hit the nail on the head. We the people of RV, Western, NE, Coast, Eastern, Central and Nyanza can’t be more impoverished that we already are. Let’s kick Kibaki’s butt and liberate all Kenya from the Kleptocracy that is the his regime.

Real life stories:There will be blood in Kenya

    By Nicholas D. Kristof

    Syndicated columnist,NEW YORK TIMES

KISUMU, Kenya — Until he was circumcised with a machete in front of a jeering mob and then dragged off to be beheaded, Robert Ochieng had been a symbol of modern, post-tribal harmony in Kenya.

A member of the Luo ethnic group, Robert, 16, had played and studied with members of another ethnic group, the Kikuyu. They were friends. And then Kenya erupted in rioting after a rigged election, and suddenly Luos were chasing and killing Kikuyus, and a mob of Kikuyus was running down Robert.

He claimed that he was Kikuyu as well, but the suspicious mob stripped him naked and noted that he was not circumcised, meaning that he could not be Kikuyu. That's when his attackers held him down — smashing his arm when he tried to protect himself — and performed the grotesque surgery in the street to loud cheers.

The crowd shouted war cries and was preparing to decapitate Robert with a machete when the police rescued him. Doctors did some repair work and say he will recover physically, but as he sat in a church shelter for the displaced here in Kisumu in Western Kenya, he seethed with hostility that may never heal.

"When I see Kikuyu shops that have been burned down," he told me, "I feel good inside."

Never again will Robert be friendly with Kikuyu or have anything to do with them; he is now a symbol of the primeval tribal tensions that threaten Kenya's future.

The prime villain is President Mwai Kibaki, who would have been hailed as a hero if he had obeyed the will of the people in the December election. Instead, he — and a cast of thugs around him — appear to have stolen the election, starting a spiral of tribal violence that has killed more than 1,000 people and displaced 300,000. Kibaki's intransigence risks the collapse of his country, possibly even civil war.

The man who probably had the election stolen from him, Raila Odinga, is a Luo, as was Barack Obama's Kenyan father. Many Kenyans grimly note that a Luo may become president of the United States before being permitted to become president of Kenya.

Many Kenyans also say that the United States has been a part of the problem. In our desire for stability, we acquiesced in election irregularities in such countries as Ethiopia and Nigeria, inadvertently signaling that Kibaki could get away with stealing re-election.

The United States cozied up to Kibaki and initially congratulated him on his "victory."

Since then, the United States has come around and played a helpful role in nudging Kibaki to make concessions, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's visit to Kenya on Monday usefully added pressure.

More broadly, the United States has pursued policies in Africa that are akin to our policies in Pakistan, and Kibaki is one of our African Musharrafs. In the interest of short-term stability, we acquiesce in despotic behavior that eventually creates instability. Granted, these are tough balances to strike. But look at Kenya or Pakistan today, and it's clear that we got the balance wrong.

Flying over northern Kenya to Eldoret, you see smoke still rising from some of the countless Kikuyu farms that have been burned to the ground. And here in Kisumu, the arriving Luo tell horrific stories.

"My wife was burned to death with our two children, aged 5 and 1 ½," said a dazed Nicholas Ochieng. "Now I have no wife, no children, no house, no job. I have nothing."

Mary Odhiambo, an aid worker tending to the new arrivals, said one shellshocked woman arrived on a bus still clutching her husband's head, wrapped in newspapers, after a mob had hacked it off and mockingly presented it to her.

"We have people coming in from Kikuyu areas, and they swear that before they die, they have to kill a Kikuyu," Odhiambo said.

If Kibaki does not back down, Kenya will completely blow up. Kofi Annan is working heroically to broker a compromise, and a power-sharing agreement is possible in which Kibaki remains president for a couple of years and Odinga serves as prime minister.

But so far, Kibaki hasn't been willing to make necessary concessions.

"If the talks collapse, there will be an explosion countrywide," Odinga said, adding: "It will be bloodier than before."

  40. Kenya as we knew it is no more, let us never fool ourselves. The best thing is for the country to be split up. Read the Israeli - Palestinian Wars fought in the 60's are still haunting those in the Middle East. The can of worms of that has been opened can NEVER be sealed. I analogize this to the Middle East and the Kenya we will have, you go tell a person in Palestine that has lived in a refugee camp for decades to find reason and level headedness, it is like trying to extract water from stone. This is the Kenya that our children, their children and childrens children will inherit. All because of a bunch of self-serving thugs from a certain house. Little do they know that when Kenya will go up in smoke, in just a matter of time, they will too. It will be too late to seal that can of worms.

  43. I am tired of reading---we will do this and that and that. Kibaki's presidency will not last3 days, sorry a week sorry a month.... Kibaki was only voted for by Central and "parts of Eastern"( and that INEXPLICABLY gave him 4.1 million which is the official figure read by Mudavadi. Raila on the hand was voted for by R. Valley, Nyanza, Western, Nairobi, Coast, N Eastern and "half of Eastern--actualy about 5%". The total vote of the "six and a half provinces" is 4.3 million. In other words what we are saying is that 4.3 million KENYANS voted for Raila and 4.1 million KIKUYUS voted for Kibaki. Aaaai, I for one do not believe that because it simply doesn't add up. I know people lie to others but lying to themselves is new to me.

So, when is Kibaki's regime collapsing? When is Raila 'arap Mibei' a.k.a people's president being sworn in?

But wait a minute; what does the people's president mean? I know BANTU stands for people and I am told the Kikuyu, Embu, Meru, Mbeere, Kamba, Kisii, Taita and the Bukusu, all of whom are Bantu (and therefore the real people)voted for Kibaki. Maybe and just may be we need to get our facts right on who really is the people's President.

It seems RUTO has some loyal followers up in here and I know he's very popular in Kalenjin Land, but remember that even HITLER was very much loved in Nazi Germany.

do u know what this means ??...

The mistake yu guys make is that yu mistake Kibaki's silence for foolishness and that is what he knows y'll are doing.

The government hasn't done anything drastic about the violence, even as ODM keeps up issuing bad threats of more protests and Najib Balala saying central will be Lesotho....clearly yu guys know that empty debes make the most noise..

I'd be very worried by the government's silence. They are planning a grand retaliation to take out all their enemies one at a time.

That's why i said Raila should distance himself from RUTO, RUTO Is too much political baggage.

I know his people idolize RUTO Just as the Nazi youth worshipped Hitler, it's all good, it's democracy anyway, u can like whoever pleases your fancy, but for me, killing women and children in a church is very distasteful.

So Kenyans now know who killed 43% of the people who died? I thought they knew this all along. And who killed the remaining 57%? As usual 43% will be presented as being >57%. Have we not always been told that the combined Kibaki/Kalonzo vote (which is at least 55% even by ODM's own figures) is a minority? Have we not heard every single day that "Raila and ODM represent the majority of Kenyans"? So those who voted for Kibaki and Kalonzo are Somalis and Ethiopians?

    Revealed: Inside the talks room

    Published on February 27, 2008, 12:00 am

    By Standard Team

A member of the PNU negotiating team engaged the Panel of Eminent African Persons in heated exchanges and is understood to have let fly comments that stunned mediators before the talks were suspended indefinitely, The Standard can report.

A disappointed lead mediator, Dr Kofi Annan, said he would now engage with the principals, Party of National Unity’s President Kibaki and Orange Democratic Movement’s Mr Raila Odinga, in a bid to give the talks a fresh lease of life.

This emerged even as the US State Department announced it was exploring "a wide range of possible actions" on Kenya, less than 24 hours after the deadlock.

"We will draw our own conclusions about who is responsible for lack of progress and take necessary steps. We will also exert leadership with the United Nations, African Union, European Union and others to ensure that the political solution the Kenyan people deserve is achieved," the US Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice said in a statement issued by the State Department.

On Tuesday night, details of the exchanges in the mediation room remained sketchy but the minister is understood to have exploded when the former United Nations Secretary-General, Annan, tried to steer discussions towards what was already drafted in the report of the Legal Working Group.

Sources told The Standard the minister was defending the need to preserve the President’s executive authority and retain him as the appointing authority for both the prime minister and members of the Cabinet when Annan interrupted the argument with the reminder.

Thereafter, the talks are said to have degenerated into accusations, with epithets being hurled across the table as the PNU and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the two protagonists in the disputed and discredited presidential elections engaged in a slinging match.

Both Annan and former Tanzania President Benjamin Mkapa, who also sits on the Panel of Eminent African Persons, are understood to have found themselves on the rack with attacks, some of them questioning their integrity.

It is at this point or shortly afterwards, sources said, that the minister left the mediation room in a huff.

Mbooni MP Mr Mutula Kilonzo, who together with Justice minister Ms Martha Karua, Education minister Prof Sam Ongeri and his Foreign Affairs counterpart Mr Moses Wetangula makes up the Government team at the talks, is said to have followed the minister outside.

When he returned to the still high-strung room, Mutula reportedly apologised and clarified that the minister’s were "personal remarks and not that of the Government mediation team".

    Tampers flared

Later, while addressing journalists at the Serena Hotel after the talks, Mutula remarked: "The meeting was too hot, tempers flared in the afternoon".

Since the weekend, it was clear the talks could be headed for a gridlock, even collapse.

Matters in the search for a political settlement out of the impasse — that has left at least 1,000 people dead, close to half a million displaced and the economy on the brink — appeared to have come to a head on Monday.

On Tuesday, that chasm appeared to have widened even as the talks’ teams put on a brave face.

In perhaps his harshest speech since he arrived in the country slightly over a month ago, Annan openly spoke of his disappointment at the failure by the protagonists to understand the magnitude of the problem at hand.

He appeared dismayed that no one seemed to see the gravity of what in his estimation was an extraordinary situation that required extraordinary measures to deal with once and for all.

Struggling to remain diplomatic in the face of disdain, Annan told an international press conference: "We cannot pretend that nothing has happened, we cannot continue with business as usual".

The UN-backed mediator asked President Kibaki and Mr Raila Odinga to either take charge by giving instructions to their representatives, "or I engage them".

It was only his second statement in under 24-hours that seemed to imply that the two must now show leadership in the process.

On Monday night after a day in which nothing moved in the talks, Annan had stated: "I believe that the Panel of Eminent African Personalities working with the Kenya National Dialogue and Reconciliation have done its work. I’m now asking the party leaders, Hon Raila Odinga and President Mwai Kibaki to do theirs".

He said he had concluded that the teams were incapable of resolving the outstanding issues.

The divide was evident from what the opposing sides in the talks said soon after Annan’s pronouncement.

While ODM cited frustration even after "ceding a lot of ground" in the talks, PNU insisted it did not see any justification for the suspension.

Mutula, in fact, said the Government side had formally protested against the shelving of the talks and said that the bitter exchanges and flaring of tempers would not justify such a move.

"Look at Prof Sam Ongeri, he is distraught…you have never seen him like this," the MP, who spoke for the Government side, said in reference to the bitter exchanges that had erupted.

He added: "We have not given up. We were distraught by what happened on the mediation floor when it degenerated almost into personal insults."

ODM Pentagon member Mr Musalia Mudavadi, who together with Mr William Ruto (Eldoret North), Dr Sally Kosgei (Aldai) and Mr James Orengo (Ugenya) constitute the Orange party’s team, said: "We are extremely frustrated. The moment we made some ground a complete reversal was made".

    International pressure mounts

He added: "We have been dedicated and committed to the talks. As ODM, we ceded ground on our original position that Kibaki should resign. We did this even despite the tribulations that we have gone through because we wanted Kenya to go on and be together".

On Tuesday night, as the deadlock forced a suspension of the talks, the US threatened to exert leadership with the UN, the EU and the AU to force a political solution on Kenya.

The statement came barely a week after Rice visited the country to impress upon President Kibaki and Raila to reach a settlement soon.

"It can’t be an illusion, power sharing must be real," Rice said and warned that the solution to the country’s crisis lay in sharing of power between the two camps.

Indeed, it is the quest for real power sharing by ODM and the reluctance by PNU to make any meaningful concessions that appear to have wound back the clock on the talks even as progress appeared to have been made.

In her statement on Tuesday, Rice noted that the two leaders assured her of their commitment to work out a structure for real sharing of power.

"While some progress has been made," noted Rice in her statement, "I am disappointed by the failure of leadership necessary to resolve all the remaining issues.

"There can be no excuse for further delay. There can also be no excuse for violence and those responsible must be held accountable," she warned.

"I want to emphasise that the future of our relationship with both sides and their legitimacy hinges on their cooperation to achieve this political solution," Rice warned, adding that her country was exploring a wide range of possible actions.

She noted that peaceful voices continue to mount from civil society organisations, churches and from the Kenyan people on the need for a political solution.

She reiterated her strong commitments to efforts by the Annan mediation team to bring a political solution to the problem.

But the Government reacted sharply to the US statement at a hurried press conference on Tuesday night.

The PNU mediation team urged ‘international friends’ not to impose solutions on Kenya.

"Our international friends as we have stated before are welcome to make suggestions and to support the dialogue process but not impose solutions and should take care not to legitimise or reward violence, death and destruction. All relevant factors must be taken into account to avoid rush judgment based on incomplete information," read the statement in part.

Mutula instead accused the ODM side of being responsible for the stalemate due to their "amazing" demands.

Another thing this individual is threatening as with government militia but this person forgets like some one like myself i have cousins in the army in high ranking positions- and I doubt if they will take an order from Kibaki to kill their own blood - that is wish full thinking on PNU`s side - and how many kenyans like me have relatives in the army!!officers, major, captains and foot soldiers!!can you people tell me all this relatives of yours would shoot you on Kibaki`s orders!!

Why do you imagine that you, being a kikuyu, have a bigger stake in the governance of the country? If Kibaki got more than 4 million votes, do you in your small head think there were 4 million kikuyu registered voters? Don't you know that there are Luos, Kambas, Kalenjins and Somalis who support Kibaki and his government? I mean you guys have allowed yourselves to be buffetted by an imaginable ignorance and stupidity. What does your ethnicity have to do with the person I should support?

Do you think Kibaki will listen to criticisms about the legitimacy of his presidency? And do you think Raila is justified in threatening mass action (we all know where that would end up) and then attempting to pull a photographic opportunity with Bush in TZ so that he can give the appearance that he has discussed issues with Bush? Both of them are being ignored, its all about who will be the bigger man and be accomodating

  85. All of your arguments go back to the same point; is tribalism an artificial construct of African politicians? YES!! and we are stupidly being led into it, these negotiations are nothing to do with what you want, whether its KIbaki going into oblivion or gaining more political recognition for your ethnic group, this is elite patronage and power sharing at its highest! And we as Kenyans look so stupid when the rest of the world notices this and we dont. All this suggestions of secession and I dont know what are total nonsense, if Kikuyu's or Luo's or Kalenjin's for example were that bad, there would have been secession a long time ago. Well said... I wish there were more relevant posts in here like yours...

where will kenya be 3 months from today ?

    6 months from today ?

    a year from today ?

    5 years from today ?

where would you like Kenya to be in those time frames ?

I for one WANT Kenya to remain as ONE! This talk of dividing kenya is very unpatriotic. Just like the bible story of the two women and solomon with the baby, whoever calls for kenya's division does not have kenya's interests at heart.

I don't care whether it's PNU or ODM- Whoever wants this division is ENEMY #1

I'd also like to see a more equitable kenya. and by equitable, I mean, people at the bottom getting chances of moving up, getting good healthcare and food on the table.

I applaud the government's efforts in providing free primary school education and subsididzed high schhol. I know this will help alot of parents.

I'd also like to see Kenya with a vibrant opposition that keeps the government of the day on it's toes. However, I'm careful not to want an opposition that polarizes kenya on tribes.

I want to see a Kenya with REDUCED Presidentail powers, seriuosly, wee need less powers for our president.

I want to see a kenya that will continue with the economic growtha nd hopefully go into double digit growth. I want to see this growth uplifet the bottom out of poverty!!

I want to see a Kenya with roads that are actually driveable.I want road contractors to be exposed and held to account for their shoddy jobs.I'm not a personal fan of Michuki, but I know at least he'll get the roads built- shiet, he's already started by cancelling crescent construction tender and threatening to follow suit with Kirinyaga construction.

I want to see a kenya that ahs responsible media too.

but most of all I want to see a well fed kenya!!! A Hungry man is an angry man, kenya needs to be well fed.

I invite everyone to answer those questions and say where you want kenay to be in the near future. Please...please No unecessary politicking whether you are PNU or ODM, Just where you want kenya to be as a patriot

  106. doesn't really matter if you agree with the economist or ft. the fact is that they are influential. it's not a kenyan issue simply by the geographical location of kenya; it could never be. you can yell and scream all you want about what they write but it matters; fx. kagame did not talk about the army because he wants to interfere, it's because he has to. i know a lot of people got fed up with the economist because of their briefing last year and the ps of the treasury even published a rebuttal (full of writing mistakes), out of bitterness at corruption being called by its real name. but the gist of that review was: hippoes are messing it up for the professional class in kenya. can you really disagree with that? kenyans believed in change, otherwise they would not have bothered to vote.

unless of course yo want to live in zimbabwe - be my guest, it's not where i want my children to grow up. and move beyond your mzungu hate - they don't care and most of them would be more than happy to leave kenya alone (for the Chinese). don't kid yourselves. grow up.

I used to be a frequent reader of the economist. Some of their pieces are quite good, and it's true they are independnetly owned, that does not mean they are neutral in heir reporting.

I once recall reading the Economist, I think in 04 or 05 or 06....and they had an article about kenya being a "failed state"
    AND I was like ??????

I also know they are not in good books with the kenya gava. They were to host an africa economic summit in Nairobi either last year or 06, but the gava cancelled it and from that time, I've never read anything good from them about kenya. That's why I know their reporting is very unbalanced.

  109. so you are saying kenya is not a failed state? the level of corruption was at its highest in 04/05 and now you see the result. things can't be isolated: the kenya state has been a fief for a few people for too long. they often get it wrong, but in this case i fear not. they are also honest about having a specific free trade approach - in fact it's their stated religion. they are owned in a three fold structure with A shares with special votes held mainly by the rothschilds, schroeders and mr chocolate - cadburys. mind you they were harder on berlusconi of italy than they ever were on kenya - it's not an africa europe thing; sorry of you wanted it to be - there is no easy way out. we must take responsibility ourselves;

Ati u want your kids to grow up and "move beyond mzungu hate"

    LMAO.....lol..that was funny, for real.

In an ideal world, that would be a very noble aspiration to have.
But when your kids grow up, live in a mzungu society and really understand what mzungus think of them, then feel free to re-evaluate your position on this.

I once thought that akataz were just bitter lossers in life, always complaining about how "the man" yaani mzungu has kept them down. Some akataz are genuinly negative and lazya nd all, but once you study the History of the U.S. and the brutality of these wazungu toward the blackman, I highly think you'd change your position.

Don't think that akatz haven't tried to avoid this mzungu hate..they have tried for some 300 years but expereince has taught them of the mzungu really is.

I'm not sayin your kids should hate wazungu, no, there's good and bad people in all races, but let them know who they really are and that they may as well hate yur kids despite smiling with them in their faces.

  111. anon @2.55, political hegemony will always exist, it exists in the states with Americans of european origin, it exists with the english in UK, it exists in Africa. And whoever said ati academia is irrelevant now, it is even more relevant, if people understood that ethnicity is artificially constructed, then they would understand that it is used as a vehicle by politicians to achieve their own goals at the expense of development of the regions and the country because the provision of public goods (which are for everyone and include roads, schools etc)is far more difficult is where there is ethnic rivalry. That is why Kenyans must start looking at thinkgs in terms of what for them is the best environment for their lives to thrive? Is it when one tribe is marginalized? Is it when all tribes have the common vision of a better Kenya? A better Kenya will never be achieved through 'armed struggle' - if you think that look around you, there is no time for that, we aint Europe!

  115. thanks for all the comments; the point is that the economist is loathed by power brokers because they write what they think; of course you can disagree - and for sure they thought it was funny that the kenya government behaved like offended kids and cancelled the conference - kenya has and had more to loose from that than the economist. rothschilds are bankers no more no less (although a piece of art here and there has tried to soften the blow of that trade on humanity - including the economist it seems); again this idea that everyone hates kenyan's; it's really striking how low our self confidence is. true the black man has not had a great time for a long time; but at this point we are our own enemies; we are the ones fighting our wars. someone with a lot of confidence in himself and what he is doing does not get offended and cancels a conference, he stands up on hs arguments. seems to me that even in the us where race has always been determinant of elections that barack obama is doing quite well?

all i'm saying is that we need to stop playing the offended colonial card, the anti-economist card, all those anti-cards that make us look smaller and less confident than we need be. There is plenty of wealth in kenya to go round.

and ask any maid for whom she would rather work...white, kenyan or indian...oups now it got complicated ;) some kenyans are kept like slaves in their own country and don't we forget that. but as kibaki is learning it cannot be a whole people.

It only came into useful productivity under the kibaki administration.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hey Kibaki Adminstration shut down that Airport. Plus, I don't care whether it was a white elephant or a waste of money. It is now going to serve a purpose. As, people in Western Kenya learn to be self reliant and 'HARD WORKING'

  132. on the kenya Railways I know they were hunting for a partner hair in Canada- recently- did you know that deal of south Africa had some Uganda ownership!!some of museveni`s hatch men i hear meseveni has also share in that consortium
so you see why it failed- i also hear there was a power struggle on share control between the south African partners and the Ugandan while Kenya was asleep!

I know Rift Valley and more so Eldoret has begun benefiting from their Airport.

totally agree and maybe they should also go into spices production that is good $ in the middle east
so a spice factory can be built from production up to packaging for export

  134. WHAT KENYANS NEED TO REALISE IS THAT KENYA BELONGS TO MORE THAN 30 MILLION PEOPLE.
RAILA AND KIBAKI SHOULD NOT AND I REPEAT SHOULD NOT, 100 TIMES MAKE OUR LIFE MISERABLE BECAUSE OF POWER HUNGER.

I`M A KENYAN AND I`M SO UPSET THAT TWO (2) INDIVIDUALS CAN DICTATE OUR FUTURE.

IT`S TIME THAT THIS TWO PEOPLE REALISE THAT WE ARE THE POWER, WE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO PAY THEM AND SO FAR, THEY DO NOT DESERVE A SINGLE CENT FROM OUR TAX MONEY.
THIS OLD-KANU CROOKS CAN SURVIVE ON ALL THE MONEY THEY HAVE SIPHONED IN FOREIGN BANKS, MONEY THAT THEY STOLE FROM OUR SWEAT.

KENYANS WE NEED TO TAKE ACTION TODAY AND GET RIDE OF THIS THIEVES.
SORRY I`M A LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT MY FAMILY WHO HAVE BEEN WORKING SO HARD TO MAKE ENDS MEET.
-AND HERE COMES RAILA AND KIBAKI. THEY HAVE NEVER LIVED IN A HOUSE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY, NO RUNNING WATER, NO HEALTH CARE, THEY HAVE NEVER WALKED TO SCHOOL.THEY DRIVE THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARS. THE COST OF THOSE CARS CAN FEED A WHOLE VILAGE. THIS ARE NEO-COLONIALSTS EVEN WORSE THAN THE BRITISH.

PLEASE..PLEASE...WE DESERVE TO SEND THEM HOME AND THAT`S A DONE DEAL.
    KENYA IS OUR MOTHER COUNTRY.

THEY SHOULD BOTH RETIRE. THEY ARE SENILE.

    AND I MEAN THAT.
    FULL STOP..!

But that shouldn't affect kenya's part of the operation?

remember also kina Moi, Gideon his son, kina Biwott have some equity in Safaricom thru that Mobitelea company, but that did not stop Safcom from being sucessful.

I surely hope They get a good canadian partner coz that Roy Puffet is all talk, no action, even kenya ports complain about this guy...

as for ANNON 4:24, whatever makes u happy about the Eldie Airport.

But I just have to ask u...How can Kibaki administartion shut down Eldie airprot and it is currently operating?

The Airprot was brought under KAA, Kenya airports authority, they're the ones who run it, and KAA is part of the government.

It seems u really hate kibaki-that's ur prerogative, but let's not be blind to the facts, remember, money doesn;t discriminate.
That's why kibaki, Moi and Njonjo despite their political differences, still own companies 2gether like Heri Ltd.

Just the same way Michuki must not be liked, I'm sure people are happy he's the Roads minister, coz we all know he'll get that job done

True, only after Peace is restored. However, if we continue to talk about peace and how to restore it, we'll just end up with matusi of sijui ODM is evil, PNU is evil, mara Raila did that, Kibaki did this...basically no maendeleo.

It's better we talk about issues which everyone should have an interest in and that is maendeleo and devloping the economy further

  141. Actually I don`t think people hate the individuals but what they stand for or did when they could have corrected things for ordinary kenyans- it is good to be rich- but not on ordinary kenyans sweat!!when people sign contracts through tenders that are not advertised correctly because of being connected it is wrong- when people get opportunites to get richer and richer to the expense of other kenyans it is wrong so what this people did and the millions they made was wrongly attained - so you see people don`t admire then for being rich but they hate then for getting rich on ordinary kenyans backs since this same kenyans pay taxes to the government - which in turn does not provide to their needs ie - not enough hospitals for the sick- no proper roads - no enough clean drinking water - housing is a nightmare e.t.c

hate builds up when people are not given equal opportunities even when they have gone and had a good education- there are many young Kenyans with degrees but jobless-
the old guard stay in jobs for ever so again there id no movement in the job market for example in government offices!!

..'It seems u really hate kibaki-that's ur prerogative'

Hate is an understatement. I like him the way a Jew likes Hitler. Got it?

But anyway Kibaki shutdown the Eld airport until politicians and business people made noise. It is only the current crisis that has made the airport fully utilizable.
Anyway that is a mute point, soon Kenya will be divided and Kibaki will have his own country. Most of us in western Kenya will frankly not miss him a bit

Kenya has gold, phosphate- soda ash in magadi, gemstones in the coast and eastern pert of the country, silica sand for making glass, gypsum and iron or for the cement industry and lead for use in the manufacture for batteries, granite and limestone are being used for our building industry

Oil now in the pipe line

you see all this industries have not yet been fully developed to full capacity and the other problems are not many kenyans are aware of this minerals so deal are done with government friendly persons with foreign companies - so this is all for individual well!

my preference would have been minerals concessions should not belong to an individual but to a whole town or village if one does not want to involve the state and this is what should help build all this smaller towns infrastructures- ie. roads =- hospitals -schools- clean water e.t.c

Annon @ 4:52, as I said if u hate kibz, that's up to you...ati politicians made noise mpaka the airport was open? yaani they'd been quiet for all those years in Moi times but "all of a sudden" made noise...ha ha ha...

I'm sorry to dissapoint you but kenya is not being divided, it's what Ruto and the rest would like but it ain't happening.

and just in case u didn't know I don't know how some parts of kenya would even survive being Nairobi accounts for 60 % of kenya's GDP.

nORTH EASTERN WOULD MOST DEFINITELY die.

It seems Kisumu is going with life, they are eager to re-build, they saw that self destruction benefits no one in the end.

  150. My problem is that Ordinary Kenyans "POOR PEOPLE" have no idea how much our country is worth.

We Kenyans are sitting on a Gold mine that have never been exploited."BUT ONLY BY kENYATTA MOI,ODINGA`S,BIWOTT, RUTO,KOSGEY, KOSKEI,AND JIRONGO.

But the Kenyattas, Mois, kibakis,Railas know that.

THAT`S WHY KILLING 1500 PEOPLE FOR THEIR OWN BENEFIT IS NOT A BIG DEAL.

SIPHONING BILLIONS OF $$DOLLARS TO DENMARK, SWITZERLAND, UK,AMERICA, NIGERIA, SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRALIA AND AUSTRIA DOES NOT HELP KENYANS. When we look at Railas` and Kibakis` faces we see THIEVES. People who have deprived ordinary Kenyans their wealth and deposited that stolen wealth abroad for the white people to use, Biwotts wife, mwangales wife and Moi`s girlfriend benefit from that, while ordinary Kenyans who work so. so hard and pay taxes suffer and scratch their ass..

I don`t know, but i think thats what make Kenyans angry. Getting "kutombwa mpaka maskio."

I remember there was a lot of clamor when one scientist said that africans are incapable of handling power because of genetics, apparently there is a power-responsibility gene that africans lack. could this be true...I mean why can't africans handle their affairs with posterity in mind..all the billions they steal they leave here on earth...they fight for change...when they get into power they stifle the same change they are clamoring for...please tell me this is not true because I am now afraid to run for for political office because my genetical make up will let me down at the crucial moment....worried African..

  155. Annon 10: PM - stop this historian white-black complex. Kenya and Africa in general have overcome this a long time ago. Do you really think that people like Biwott, Mwangale, Njonjo and even Kenyatta have become corrupt because they were married to a White ? I mention Kenyatta since his second wife was white before he got married to Mama Ngina for political reasons - do you want to blame everybody who went to bed with a white now? Then you have to count millions of Africans including some of our most esteemed young sons. Be reasonable here. The root of the sickness lies in everybody himself and not just in a small part of his body.
