Suffering Kenyan Children: A Photo Essay

Today this blogger takes a break from politics to bring images of terrorized Kenyan children. Thats right. State security agents, some said to have been imported from Uganda, are unleashing violence and promoting indiscriminate killings of unarmed civilians.

Sadly some of these civilians are innocent harmless Kenyan children.

Yesterday Kisumu residents attended the solemn funeral of one master Salim Hamed,13, who was killed by three 'stray' police bullets while playing football with his friends. His death has been described as a great tragedy by human rights activists. Read Salim's unfortunate story here.

School going children have not been spared either. These two school uniform clad children are seen above taking cover on the side of protesters as opposed to side of police. As you can see from the picture, the young girl is terrified! This was after police threw tear gas canisters into the Olympic Primary School compound disrupting learning and severely affecting health of the minors (see below).

Yesterday, which was the second day of ODM protest rallies, journalists were barred from covering a paramilitary operation in Kibera slums ostensibly because news reports have painted security officers guilty of attacking women and children out of frustration of failing to arrest young men who have made spirited attempts to march to Uhuru park. The police are also accused of engaging in sexual violence (gang rape) of women who have been left behind in the slums. Yesterday, GSU officers cordoned off the entrance to the slums to bar journalists from witnessing the operation, which left four people killed.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) published a shocking report yesterday indicating that more than 100,000 Kenyan children have been forced to flee their homes due to the wave of violence that swept through Kenya following last month’s disputed elections. The UN agency report said that as many as 75,000 children are now residing in over 100 camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs), while many thousands more children are believed to be living temporarily with other family members.

Regrettably, these displacements have coincided with the onset of the short rains. For children who sleep out in the open, often without meals while it is wet and cold, this is a huge humanitarian catastrophe and ALL KENYAN LEADERS ought to be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen.

This blogger believes that excessive force employed by police in trying to block ODM mass action protest rallies is responsible for the suffering of these children. The President, through his internal security minister, retains the command control of the actions of all security forces in Kenya, including those who tear gassed medical staff and patients at the Eldoret District Hospital yesterday.

It is time the president invoked these powers to prevent further suffering of these Kenyan children. It is long overdue.

  1. You should ask yourself what effects your statements are having on the political environment. My heart cries with the children for they are innocent. But my hands wait for a chance to wring your neck. You are one moronic blogger who exploits the fact that he has a large audience to spread hate.
For starters you can use your appeal to cool down tempers...as long as it takes me i promise to get to you.

  2. Why must YOU read/respond to these so-called hate articles? Your own words betray your lies. Des your 'heart' really cry for these children?

When will YOU stop issuing threats and actually do something? Are you one of the notorious Kenyan/Ugandan security agents that are guilty of rapping and killing children perhaps? Your anger is evident in the fact that you hate the TRUTH.

Maybe if you took time and sent an article disapproving what I have posted to the e-mail provided so it can published right here then we can take you seriously Mr. nameless!

Right now, if you are in Nairobi, I am right here at Uchumi Ngong Hyper, about to make my daily visit to the Nairobi show IDP camp. Lets see how fast you can get here. I will wait till 1pm. I am sitting at the coffee shop of the entrance. Si babaiki!

  3. Phil, Unajiskianga ati wewe ni Mwandishi mashuhuri, ilhari umeegemea upande wa DOMO. Why ask the president to invoke powers to prevent further mayhem, rather than ask DOM captain to stop asking for more mass protests? They are always a recipe for chaos. Style up big headed phil. U always thot ati Raila would win with an overwhelming 60% and above, and that is what is haunting you. Meza wembe mse.

  4. Anon12.02, This post is not about politics of Raila or Kibaki.

In any case, it is a recorded FACT Raila won the presidency, but it was STOLEN from him. The robbery happened right infront of our TVs.

As a matter of fact, some more ECK returning officers who witnessed the rigging first-hand are due to hold a press conference at PanAfric Hotel to table more evidence.

The sooner Kibaki resigns and/or calls for a re-run and/or forms a transitional government the better it will be for every Kenyan.

Meanwhile before he makes up his mind, let him call hs dogs off. Hatuta babaishwa na waizi wa Kura.

  5. Phil, Kibaki won't resign, He won't form a transitional govt, there will be no re-run.

You DOMoz must prove the rigging in a reputable manner, or institution, otherwise, RIGGING, AS REAL AS IT MAY HAVE HAPPENED, is ALLEGED.

PHil, I know you want more chaos(deaths), so that you armtwist Kibaki into re-run etc. None of that will work.

The Official Opposition Leader must take his role. Na akicheza, hatawahi kuona statehouse na macho! He may never become president.

We all feel for the suffering Kids, so PHil dont try to show as if you are more merciful or something. Let raila stop the mass protests, whil ruto stops displacing Kenyans in RV, and we wont need your photo essay. get it?
Othewise am still waiting for your overwhelming 60% and above win for raila.

  7. I FEEL SORRY FOR THESE FOOLS WHO ONLY SEE KIBAKI AS SOME SORT OF GOD OR SAVIOUR AND RAILA AS THE ONE WHO WILL NEVER SEE THE PRESIDENCY ETC ETC BCOZ HE IS JALUO.
DO YOU PPLE EVER REALLLY SIT TO THINK THROUGH B4 YOU WRITE OR ARE YOU JUST PLAIN MORONS??
THINK OF THE YOUTH WHO VOTED FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WOKE UP AT 4 AM TO LINE UP.
THINK OF THE INNOCENT WOMEN WHO ARE RAPED BY THUGS- A RAPIST IS A THUG WHETHER LUO , KIKUYU ETC.
HINK OF THE CHILDREN SLEEPING IN THE RAIN- IMAGINE HOW THEY ARE THIS MORNING AND ON WEDNESDAY WHEN IT WAS SO WET?
WHY ARE YOU SO FOOLISH AS TO TRIVIALISE AND TRIBALISE EVERYTHING?
WHAT GAIN IS IT FOR KIBAKI THAT HUNDREDS OF KIKUYUS ARE SLEEPING IN THE RAINS, HUNDREDS OF LUOS/KALENJINS/LUHYAS ARE MURDERED BY SECURITY FORCES SUPPOSED TO PROETECT THEM?
WHAT GAIN IS IT INDEED IF A YOUNG WIDOW CRIES BCOZ HER HUSBAND HAS JUST BEEN EXECUTED BY ARMED THUGS IN UNIFORM, OR A MOTHER HAS LOST A 10 YR OLD CHILD BCOZ OF ARMED SECURITY AGENTS.
NO ONE IS WINNING AND WILL WIN IN THIS SITUATION UNLESS WE START THINKING.
FOR ALL THE MORONS OF PNU AND ODM IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY SHIS..

  10. The pervert only diminishes his own cause.

Politicians who have served in either the Kenyatta or Moi governments should somehow be disbarred for running for President.

  11. Phil, ignore all those jiggers-infested morons who cannot fight themselves but have to hire the killer gangs of Museveni. Just ignore them, don't even answer any one of them. Kenya is larger than the thugs of Cetral Kenya. Besides, it is NOT the Kikuyus who stole the vote. Michuki, Karua and Murage did it for the goon at SH. Wanjiru is on the cold, living under tents while somebody here is wasting your time. The world has seen it, Moi is saintly compared to the travesty of a presidency called Moi Kubaki. Stop it Phil, leave them to talk to themselves until they realise that they are alone. Actually, I'm closing in on a more salacious target and I tell you even the Kuks will idolise me as a saint. I will liberate them and Kenya once and for all from the bondage of homeguards. Soon.

  12. My original post did not mention anyone one ethnic group by name. At the rist of being called a tribalist I remember a story at the local pub.

There was this accusation about JIGGERS. We were categorically told that residents of Central Province of Kenya are the only Africans (and probably the world) who still suffer from this 18th century public health problem. And after surveying the rest of Kenya, it is indeed correct to say that jigger infestation has been completely eliminated in other areas of Kenya.

Is it because of culture, environment, tradition, genes, or a case of birds of a feather? I wonder.

  13. Hate Kikuyus but don't allege things you can't prove! Some of us have been to the village town that is Kisumu, Maseno and other places like Uriri in Luo Nyanza. And we know better about jiggers...

Ask cecilia mwangi where else she went to talk about jiggers. She'll hesitate a little bit because some Jang might be holding a stone or a stick but will tell you it's...Kisumu!
