Safaricom Now Joins Partisan Politics

After reaping billions of shillings in dishonest profits from politically oppressed Kenyans, cellphone services provider, Safaricom Limited, has the nerve to send unsolicited text messages to its subscribers on behalf of John Njoroge Michuki. The contents of the SMS are as follows:

"The Ministry of Internal Security urges you to please desist from sending or forwarding any sms that may cause public unrest. This may lead to your prosecution. (sic) From: SAFARICOM."

In multi-party politics, private and public business corporations are not supposed to engage in partisan politics. It is inconceivable that Safaricom have opted to support the evil needs of a cabinet minister who has little respect to freedom of speech and freedom of movement - all of which, Safaricom conveniently forgets, are basic human rights.

One fails to understand how Safaricom, owned partly by Vodafone PLC and the Kenyan public through the Government of Kenya, can allow its network to be misused for political gain at this critical time while it failed to do absolutely nothing when fake propaganda was circulating within its network prior to the general elections. Perhaps the profits were too sweet to turn down, huh? The latest short text message is in fact tantamount to Safaricom turning into a state broadcaster and I dare add, a direct infringement on the privacy of its subscribers.

As we debate here, it baffles me that after 45 years of self-rule, Kenyans do not presently have free access to information after the overzealous minister banned live media transmission. Worse still, for the last two days, millions of residents have had state-sponsored violence unleashed on them and their fundamental freedom of movement curtailed by paramilitary forces because the corrupt and illegitimate regime knows it has a lot to hide from the electorate.

Q: What better option does this leave Kenyans?

A: Continue the fight to Making Life Better for all Kenyans!

  1. Glad you're back! I'm surprised you did not question the source of the text messages, or what else you are not telling us. See how I'm sleeping and waking Kumekucha?

And I'm of the opinion that Safaricom has not made any dishonest profits. It simply benefited from the lack of Safaricom, an avoiding the pitfalls that Kencel, now Celtel made as a first mover in the market.

  3. Few days ago, i was laughing in jest about this prophecy that was predicting a Kibaki presidency once more. Strange how things have come round:

  5. @anon, easy bro/sis. We are all Kenyans. We just happen to disagree sometimes.

Concerning Safaricom, are there lawyers on this forum? Does Min of Internal Security have power to compel Safaricom/Celtel to do an SMS broadcast? I have not read the Communication Act etc so maybe somebody can shine the light.

  6. How unfortunate!!!! And surprising some of us writing to this blog can still have the strength to support this evil because of their tribal inclination, how sad!!!! Let´s keep the good fight wherever we are whether in Kenya or in the diaspora, we must overcome and this victory is coming soon. Let´s not relent.

  8. Kibaki and his cronies are getting crazier by the day. The media would have been the best avenue to give Kenyans such info. But they prefer to shut it up and use Safaricom instead?

But the pressure must be getting a bit too much to bear. The truth shall set Kenya free.

  9. I have informed sources that tell me that the safaricom management says the SMS was cloned, i.e. its not from them!!

  11. Fellow Kenyans, we cannot accept Kibaki and Michuki's shennanigans. At the end of the day, these two men will take their place at the Hague alongside Charles Taylor of Liberia.

Civil disobedience is the way to go!

  12. I urge you all to read this article titled "Holding Kenya Hostage to a Bankrupt Politicall Class" I bet it will sober up EVERYONE and we'll all see where we went wrong as a country.

  13. OK guys I'm reiterate my claim that most people calling for 'civil disobedience' are living safely abroad, fueling their political mileage with the blood being by innocent Kenyans today.

Raila, Kibaki and some of their followers have shown they have no conscience. What do you all think of this suggestion: Kenyans abroad get representatives who are independent and look into the quagmire. How about South Africa or Rwanda people who have been through something like this?

  14. Hellen, please get your relative Barrack Obama to call Kibaki and Raila!

  15. PKW, everybody that's sensible around the world has told Kibaki to go. Barrack included.

  16. they say that power and authority is intoxicating. Thats why leaders in such powerful positions need to be changed very often and democratically. As for now the international poerhouses need to put relentless pressure on Kibaki. He will haveno choice but to cave in. I dont have anything against Kibaki if he is voted in as compared to being shoved down the throat of Kenyans.

  17. Thanks Hellen, where's the link to Barack's statement. Please post it here.

  18. Message to Hellen and Sam Okello: I understand you are worried about the fate of the Kenyan People although allow me to question your sudden interest in this subject since upto now you never showed such a 'weakness' except when it came to sell your books ....

Never mind, I am willing to forget all this ..... and since you seem to support (or better said: pretend to support) the 1 Milllion People March on Thursday - something by the way I would also support if only I could be sure that it would not claim the lives of more innocent Kenyans - I herewith offer you the following:

If you really serious, I challenge you to prove this and use the money you owe me to buy 2 flight tickets to go to Nairobi and lead the demonstration .... show your face ..... prove that you are not only brave on the Internet, but in reality .....

Are you willing to do this? As I said before: I allow you to use my money - so do it.

And by the way, I would be more than willing to join you - but I have been told that I would be prohibited to enter Nairobi and would even be stopped to board a plane ..... so much to this.

  20. Negative campaigning and propaganda can not be equated to spreading inciting messages that will eventually lead to people being killed. Even in the most advanced democracies, the private sector has a moral responsibility to uphold the law and order rather than help create unrest.

    ReplyDelete
  21. SAFARICOM IS VIOLATING THE RIGHTS OF ITS USERS BY ALLOWING THEIR NETWORK TO SEND MESSAGES TO PEOPLE WITHOUT AN OPTION OF REFUSING SUCH BROADCAST MESSAGES.IT IS OUR RIGHT TO ACCEPT OR DECLINE SUCH MESSAGES POLITICAL OR OTHEWISE TO BE SENT TO OUR PRIVATE PHONES.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Corporate moral responsibility demands that a private company can help or be part of the greater role of ensuring that the law is upheld, or be part of acts of humanity. If the government instructed Saficom to issue a Tsunami warning that will eventually safe a lot of people, would you still be shouting Safaricom down or conglatulating their heroic ethical responsibility??
