Ethnic Cleansing?

Update: We are nowhere near a solution to the Kenyan crisis. Raila Odinga has rejected the idea of a government of national unity which Kibaki has embraced. Kenyans continue to suffer and die. The biggst threat now is hunger and disease.

One man in Kisumu was found dead, hanging from a rope after losing everything but making it to safety. It is suspected that he committed suicide. We now have censored news even as reports of what appear to be revenge attacks are being reported.

Meanwhile I've just received the amazing email below. Read and make your own conclusions;

Hi.

The following is a comment I posted on your blog.Once again, thanks for keeping us updated - this is the only other site I have been able to turn to for what I hope is open coverage when it comes to politics.

Allow me to add that when we talk about the chaos that has broken out as a PNU/ODM or LUO/KIKUYU affair, depsite the regretable loss of lives, we trivialise the situation beyond belief.

The fight out there is one for democracy. The fact that actors this time are clothed in tribal outfits, and the scene could be titled "elections" doesn't change the fact that we must all rise above our weaknesses and comfort zones to liberate our country from the imposter who now sits in Statehouse.

Hi Chris,

First let me say thanks for filling the blanks where the mainstream media are too afraid to speak. Granted, everything we read must be taken with a pinch of salt, even what would be posted on this blog.

Allow me to share a theory, feel free to delete if you feel it is over the top; and let me know if it is worth thinking about.

First, I agree, this is not a Kikuyu versus Luo war. Far from it. It is a protest against the death of Democracy. No matter how hard we try to sugar coat it, and say we must move on, our grievances must be addressed. This dust is not about to settle soon.

Second, pre election, who's car was it that was found with pangas, machete's and battons? I need no correction, it was a government car. I will assume, this is one of the vehicles that got caught. Would it be preposterous to assume that there was a group of people, who had access to government vehicles who were arming themselves before the election???

Thirdly, which side was it that was screaming bloodshed in the event ODM won the election? What made them so sure that Kenyans out there would break out in violence?

Could it be that all the above are be connected?

Ukweli haifichiki.

Regards,
Victoria Marale.

  1. While I like many others appreciate all these articles and other pro-ODM or pro-PNU facts, but we are still not targeting solutions. this information has been overplayed by both sides.

    the solution/options so far are

    a) AG suggests vote re-tally (at this point cant see what purpose it serves due to possible tampering etc)
    b) legal redress (no confidence in state/PNU run outfit Gacheru, Karua, Mungatana and AG see ECK if in doubt)
    c) PNU/Kibaki has offered GNU (not accepted by ODM/Raila on account of legitimising suspect election results)
    d) ODM sugestion of transitional govt with 3-6 month re-election process (not accepted by PNU/Kibaki axis)
    e) international community suggest external mediation (declined by PNU/Kibaki acceptable to ODM/Raila)
    f) ECK looking for legal alternatives for vote tally (not sure what purpose this serves as yet. think this is the most bizarre yet, probably has never heard of prevention better than cure )
    g) Local groups friendly to either party apply pressure to both to review their stance, the problem is we have a near juvenile situation of who will blink first and unfortunately the situation is that kibaki has in the past five years shown that he can not be trusted and now after this election fiasco is even more unlikely to be trusted again. these local groups have vested interests and are unlikely to really apply any serious pressure.

the current violence is regrettable and all efforts to bring it to an early end should continue.

looking at the near and long term future what options will allow the wounds to heal and allow Kenyans to live together, work with and trust each other. With status quo its unlikely that displaced communities will go back to their former homes, now or in teh future. The same goes for a number of business interests (those still standing). Strong arm govt/opposition overtures will certainly result in more disenfranchisement and not help the situation at all.

There is too much at stake on both sides, lets face it, we are not willing for mutually agreeable middle ground because it means each side losing the only real advantage they and of course us the supporters have and are desperately clinging to (PNU/Kibaki will loose control of the govt and state organs as well as credibility whereas ODM/Raila opportunity to reaffirm that there was or is justice/democracy) both being among the many factors contributing to or fueling the current mayhem.

This stalemate cannot be resolved locally and non partisan international community appears to be the way out (only wish there were more in the international community that didnt have vested interests).

One thing however that the local and international communities can agree on and enforce is that no current, previous, elected or nominated or otherwise member of parliament should draw a salary for the period starting Dec 26 up to when formal solution is found and announced and there should be no backdated pay checks either.

  2. correction to my post above

    1st para:

While I, like many others, appreciate all these articles and other pro-ODM or pro-PNU facts, but we are still not targeting solutions. this information has been overplayed by both sides.

last para: we cannot enforce but can apply pressure so that the MPs also actively engage in finding lasting solutions. I can only hope that principles will overcome greed when seeking solution but if they are anything like the 9th parliament we can perish that thought.

  3. at last peace is picking up in kenya............
it was tension packed week......if war never broke last week then surely the probability of it occurring in the few weeks to come by is low

Raila has no other options rather by joining GNU with Kibaki.......the other option is the opposition benches or using the army n we know about the later

  4. Point of correction Chris. While I concur with Victor Marale, I wish to say that;

Raila has just been interviewed live by the BBC TV ( Sunday 12h00 local time in Kenya). I am trying to get excerpts of the interview and I shall publish them here.

It is not correct to state that ODM has rejected the suggestion of a GNU. In fact it is open to such an arrangement, through international mediation and not Kibaki's invitation, on an interim basis as a TRANSITIONAL GNU organises the presidential poll re-run. It will be preposterous for ODM to accept a Kibaki invite into government. It will be like ODM is endorsing the fraud on the Kenyan people. Meanwhile, the ECK has to be disbanded and replaced by an acceptable institution.

Please be advised, the ODM will not go to court, neither will it accept a presidential vote recount. It will also not recognize a PNU government and the ODM is ready to go the entire distance to fight for what is rightfully the wish of the majority of kenyan citizens. ODM will continue to call rallies to talk to its people and organise peaceful protests until Kibaki and PNU see some sense.

"For the sake of the nation and the region, Kenya must move forward to a peaceful democratic transition. Kibaki should immediately unmuzzle the press, and allow the opposition to assemble peacefully in public. Church leaders, civil society, and international observers must urge the police to stop firing on innocent civilians. As urged by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, an independent recount of contested ballots is required. The African Union, the United Nations, and the Commonwealth Group should rapidly assist in convening an independent body of Kenyans from all backgrounds to conduct the recount."

  9. anon 4:05 - please stop shouting. The roots of these problems go much deeper than Raila, Ruto and Kibaki. Look at the development record of Nyanza and you will realize that there was going to be a breaking point. 45 years of marginalization.

  10. @Anon 4:05: Dip your headlights and stop shouting.

@All: If you're like me and cannot easily read text in all caps, here's Anon4:05's comment in softer tone.

With all respect to the fact that this is your blog, I have to say you, Kumekucha, are guilty of fanning the violence.

Why your obsession with revenge attacks? You are married, imagine your wife and kids been burnt alive for the sole reason they are the same tribe as Raila? What would you feel? Imagine everything you own been burnt and you been told to leave or die? Put yourself in these peoples shoes then talk.

Yes Kibaki stole the election but how is killing Kikuyus making Raila president?

The fools in Kisumu burnt and looted everything and chased the Kikuyus and Asians and now they are asking for relief aid. The fools in Kibera chased aways Kikuyus and even occupied their houses but their are now turning on each other because of hunger.

Again I ask how does this make Raila president?

And out of curiosity why aren't the middle class Luos akina Phil not out throwing stones and looting if this is really helping Raila?

Kumekucha you talk of revenge instead of been thankful the spirit of Mau Mau has not been awakened in the Kikuyus who are been butchered and them attacking all the Luos and Kalenjins in their midst.

Kibaki stole the elections and forever will be known as Mwizi Kibaki.

Raila had a chance to be a statesman but he chose to be a tribal warlord all so that he's called Rais and live in Statehouse. Well his moment has passed and he too is guilty.

Ruto...you are a mass murderer and let me tell you the international media is gathering evidence of what your private militia is doing in Eldoret and you will pay!!!

Also, you're insisting that everyone "hear" you, yet you won't "listen" to the politest of requests. We're asking that you make it easier for us to read what you are saying (then maybe we'll hear you).

  13. I think that quite a number of contributors to Kumekucha agree that violence is not the way forward and if we are following what is happening on the ground, all efforts are being made to bring peace. I will continue to emphasise however, that all efforts will lead to nothing if the root cause of the problem is not addressed. This is why I would support the idea of a GNU whose sole purpose would be to fill in the gap as we prepare for fresh presidential elections. We all know that what people are contesting here is fradulent elections, that was the trigger. Until this is dealt with I beleive we are only sugar coating the problem and we may in the near future witness another explosion. I know there is so much at stake for Kibaki and his friend but they must let the interest of the nation to come first.

  20. A comment I read

"I am a born again kenyan soldier from the Central province the stronghold of president Kibaki. Much have been said and done since the last disputed general election, but am sure no one has talked about what is happening within the barracks. The reality on the ground is not what people see on the television or hear over the radio. It is a test of faith for me to stand up and speek against the evil that has happenned. It is true that Kibaki never won the elections, hurriedly sworn into the office even without a national anthem being sung and the military throwing to the dust bin all the preparations they had done in Nairobi for the D-Day. The man in control is not even the CGS who is also silently lamenting, but one below him eying the very seat. We people from Central are seen by our colleagues as thieves wherever we walk in the barracks. True it is all tribes against us. We live in fear. Innocent people have died because of the ego and guilt of one man."

How in the world is KIBAILA going to pay it back other than by being in Hyena house. Otherwise they are both and their fundmasters going to die broke. Why this need to be in Hyena house? You think the ordinary Kenyans is going to see a markable improvement in living conditions? Haha keep dreaming. Our country has been auctioned to the foreign bidders and it is only them who call the shots. Kibaila has no say other than utmost fright that they will lose all their wealth. That is the why only a Government of National Unity will work with Kibaki in Hyena house, and Raila in Hyena house 2. Or better known as President and Prime Minister. GO BACK TO THE MOU OF 2001 and fulfill it. That way the ego's of KIBAILA can be appeased to certain extents and their fundmasters don't die having lost a minor part of their vast fortunes.

Here is my two cents..after we have gotten a modicum of peace let's first bury our dead, got a roof over heads, food and clothing for the displaced then let's talk about democracy.
Anything else is just plain wrong.
As for democracy let's disband ECK and conduct only a presidential election.
Here is my radical suggestion...let's bar kibaki, raila, kalonzo from running and let's look for leaders not politicians.
All three have proven they are not fit to run a village committee let alone the presidency.
Their callousness and insensitivity in the face of the death, chaos and insanity have exposed who they are.
Its almost 6PM in kenya.Btwn 6 and 7 today we as kenyans come together in prayer and ask God for peace and leadership.

  26. Kumekucha's stand on violence is clear, if anybody bothers to read a few more posts in this blog. His idea is to reach out to our Kikuyu brothers and sisters and unite against the evil people seated illegally in State house so that we all cease to look at the this thing as a tribal war. So far nobody has said anything about the Kumekucha "peace strategy".

Secondly although Kumekucha admitted that he was wrong when he predicted that this government would not last 3 days, (Sam gave it 7 days) I beg to differ.

In my mind this government collapsed shortly after the swering in of Kibaki. What we have now are different militia controlling different parts of the country. If you don't believe this, I dare any Kikuyu to travel to Eldoret rural today and make their presence known.

My mother is in hospital and has not written any comments during the last days - and she would never use any fake names. You should know - as do many of her Kenyan friends - that she is a very proud woman who does not need to hide - she never did. Just remember the courageous way in which she gave evidence in front of the Sunguh-Committee three years ago.

If you check on this IP No., you will see that it is sent from Spain because I am here at the moment to be close to my mother during these very difficult days.

If you would have any decency, you would stop bothering her and others in this blog with your idiotic accusations.

My mother is way above you and your likes. Just remember how she helped you when you had problems with your US-residence. I still have copies of the emails I have sent personally to some Swiss Government Officials on your behalf because she asked me to assist you. Forgotten ?

Since you hate my mother so much, why do you continue publishing and selling (and collecting the money) of her book?

Or does your hate for her stop when you start counting the ill-gotten money you make?
