Exclusive: The ODM Advertisement That Kenyan TV Stations Wont Air

The following advert was reportedly intercepted by government agents who warned media houses in Kenya, especially TV stations, of dire consequences should it find its way onto the airwaves. The ban, purportedly on the grounds that "the advert is too hard hitting and a threat to national security" is yet another chilling sign of the return to the days of one-party dictatorship.

Turn on your speakers and enjoy!

  1. This might just be the bomb!
    Another great attempt. I just don't buy your argument that the government restricted its airing.When did the government lay its eyes on it? Did ODM or the same media media houses that publicized these 'things' invite the government to censor it before it was actually aired?
    A closer scrutiny of your posts reveals this might be more of your work, Philemon/Phillip/Phil, than anyone else's. I invite you to read your posts and comments on Kumekucha and you will most likely be seeing this video.Nice job, though. You are one very hardworking sugarcane farmer in Kibera, Nairobi.

  2. That is one hell of a PROPER AGENDA (ama ni propaganda?). Whatever it is it is CREATIVE! On being intercepted one cannot be sure. No because it may be just propaganda and yes becsause nobody invited Michuki to invade std. Take your pick.

  3. I am beginning to wonder just who in Kenya is this "Phil" really, and how come of all the blogs in all the internet in all the wide world he happened to come to this blog loaded with insider information about the inner workings of especially ODM? Si kwa ubaya lakini for example how did you get your hands on this piece of VERY INTERESTING campaign tool?are we dealing with a member of the Pentagon here?
    Nevertheless Bwana Phil, i agree with the sentiments expressed in the advertisement-they are true and Kenyans with short-term memory loss must be allowed to remember the recent past

  5. KIBAKI'S MANIFESTO CANNOT BE TRUSTED

    A full page Advertiser's Announcement by ODM appearing in the Daily Nation and The Standard of Monday, November 12, 2007:

    The PNU has come up with its long-awaited Manifesto. President Mwai Kibaki made numerous solemn promises of the kind that abound in this manifesto before his election in 2002. Virtually every one of them was broken - even though he knew that in the next election he would have to explain his failures.

    He is now making even more ambitious promises and pledges. He will have very few reasons to try to fulfill these promises because he will not be running for office again in 2012. And because the just-formed PNU is likely to fade away from the political scene than the NARC coalition he headed but destroyed, no one will be accountable for all the failed ' policies and promises.

    In any event, his manifesto completely contradicts the entire basis of the election campaign Kenyans have witnessed. President Kibaki has continually emphasized continuity, yet in his manifesto, he talks of all-compassing greater change. He should know that change and continuity are two different things. Has he now abandoned continuity upon which he has always pegged his re-election motto of Kazi Iendelee?

    The foregoing not withstanding, we wish to question President Kibaki about the new commitments he is making to create "a prosperous, secure and equitable future for all Kenyans"!

    The PNU Manifesto purports to build on PNUs "excellent record and firm foundation to create a prosperous, secure and equitable future for all Kenyans." But PNU as a party is hardly two months old. Which partners are being credited for this so called success. Is it Uhuru's Kenyatta's KANU, the largest party in the PNU coalition? Or is it Kamlesh Pattni's KENDA?

    On Prosperity

    A prosperous nation is one in which all citizens are assured of access to basic needs like food, shelter, Health services and security. The majority of Kenyans cannot afford even one meal a day since under the Kibaki administration the cost of living has gone beyond the reach of ordinary men and women. Since the President killed the initiative for creating a National Health Insurance Scheme, which would have provided universal access to Healthcare, how sincere is his commitment to uplift the lives of struggling Kenyans..
    Similarly, Kenyans have not forgotten how Mr. Kibaki frustrated his ministers' efforts to provide affordable housing for Kenyans in pursuit of the pledge to build the 150,000 houses.

    On Security

    On this matter the facts speak for themselves. One only needs to look at what is happening in Mt. Elgon district, Kuresoi, or recall the Mungiki menace, frequent car jackings and bank robberies, and the recent killing of at least 500 Kenyan Youths whose bodies were recovered in Ngong Forest.

    On Equity

    Kenya is the third most inequitable nation in the world in terms of income and wealth distribution. Currently, 10% of the population control up to 70% of the country's wealth while close to 60% live in abject poverty. Rather than closing the gap, it has deepened during President Kibaki's five-year rule. Most Kenyans are asking who is benefiting from the much-heralded economic growth. It is clear that economic growth without equity does not translate into improved living standards for the majority.

    To continue living the above LIE, the PNU makes 10 pledges for Kenyans, which we are happy to expose as nothing but hot air.

    Pledge number 1: Education

    PNU pledges a free primary and secondary education yet we know that the minister for education, who is one of PNU's most senior stalwarts, has clearly told Kenyans that free secondary education is wishful thinking. Kenyans are asking, who is fooling who on this matter?

    Pledge Number 2: Healthcare

    PNU promises Kenyans to restructure the National Hospital Insurance Fund and transform it into a health insurance fund. Kenyans know that none other than President Kibaki himself is the one who recently vetoed the National Social Health Insurance Scheme proposal.

    Pledge Number 3: Maternal Healthcare

    PNU proposes free antenatal clinics, free and safe delivery and free postnatal clinics yet the health infrastructure to make this possible hardly exists. President Kibaki has continued to under fund the Health Ministry. Again, who is fooling who?

    Pledge Number 4: Doubling the Size of the Economy

    Of course this is desirable. But it can never be achieved unless we mobilize the energies and resources of ALL Kenyans, especially the poor who are in the majority. The record shows that the President's team will never engage all Kenyans on this issue, or on any other issue. Even if the economy grows, it will not benefit most of our people, since corruption and centralisation of wealth have become the hallmarks of the Kibaki administration.

    Pledge Number 5: Doubling our Investment in Infrastructure

    Again this is desirable, however if experience of the last five years is anything to go by, this infrastructure will be concentrated in selected regions of the country to the exclusion of others. If we may ask, what happened to the 2002 pledge to make the Mombasa - Malaba and Busia highways a dual carriageway?

    Pledge Number 6: Promoting enterprise

    PNU pledges to build a million stalls and sheds for juakali, and new business parks. We want to ask what he has done for these disadvantaged groups whom he promised the very same things five years ago. Who is fooling whom?

    Pledge Number 7: Equal Rights and Respect for Cultures

    The PNU Manifesto pledges not to discriminate or harass people based on their ethnicity, religion, race, gender or social class. If there had been no illegal rendition of Kenyans, perhaps we would have been fooled to believe this. If there were no discrimination in issuance of identity cards and passports to Kenyans of Somali origin again, we would have given Kibaki the benefit of doubt. If Kenyan women married to non-Kenyans had enjoyed equal rights of conferring citizenship to their spouses as enjoyed by their male counterparts, we would have had reason to believe president Kibaki on this. As matters stand we can only view this as another pledge made with the sole purpose of attracting votes and then quickly dishonoured.

    Pledge Number 8: More Representation for Women

    On this we need not say much. Let Kenyans undertake a gender audit of Mr. Kibaki's appointments in the last five years. Kibaki has repeatedly told Kenyans to judge him by his past record.

    Pledge Number 9: Security

    On this matter the facts speak for themselves. One only needs to look at what is happening in Mt. Elgon district, Kuresoi, or recall the Mungiki menace, frequent carjackings and bank robberies. And then we have just learned that there are death squads operating in Kenya, which killed of at least 500 Kenyan Youths in cold blood and their bodies dumped in Ngong Forest and Kiserian.

    Pledge Number 10: Devolution and Equity

    We welcome the president's belated conversion to devolution. However we remind Kenyans that devolving money without giving people the authority to manage and control completely negates the purpose of devolution. The PNU approach had been tried before through the District Focus for Rural Development and failed; currently CDF is bogged down by the fact that the MP rather than the local community controls the fund. In any case, PNU's so-called devolution is governed by a mere act of parliament and not the constitution. The sustainability of this pledge is therefore not guaranteed. Our friends in PNU cannot have their cake and eat it.

    Kibaki's Broken Promises

    President Kibaki had five long years to deliver the urgent pledges that Kenyans anxiously waited to be honoured so the y could meet the daily necessities of life. He betrayed all of us:
    • Kibaki promised to deliver a new constitution within the first 100, but did not deliver.
    • Kibaki pledged that corruption would cease to be a way of life, but today corruption thrives at the centre of his administration
    Kibaki promised an end to roadside declarations, but today that has become his style.
    • Kibaki promised to create 500,000 jobs annually. He never created the environment for this nor the actual jobs. If his claim that he has created 1.8 million jobs in five years, then this translates into 360,000 jobs per year, a far cry from the 500,000 jobs promised and even below 400,000 that KAMI) government was creating annually as at 2002.
    • Kibaki pledged to serve only one five year term which ends on December 30th 2007, so why is he crisscrossing the country asking the people to re-elect him for another term.

    • Kibaki pledged a lean government, but now he has the most bloated government this country has ever had.

    • Kibaki pledged to kill tribalism yet his appointments have been so skewed in favour of a particular group at the exclusion of the rest of Kenya. No wonder they resist devolution.

    The Verdict

    President Kibaki has let Kenyans down during his last five years of rule.

    He therefore CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO HONOUR ANY OF THE PLEDGES HE IS MAKING TO KENYANS AT A TIME WHEN HE IS DESPERATELY SEEKING THEIR VOTES.

  6. I have watched the advert. It is so easy for pnu to spin such a thing. Relate it to majimbo and then show clips of clashes in burnt-forest and kilifi and kuresoi and migori with the a background of ruto talking of majimbo and ntimama and put in raila with his devil-worshipping ways.

  7. Taabu, How are the facts highlighted on the commercial propaganda? All these things happened while Kibaki rested his head on the plush Turkish feather pillow at State House.
    The escapades of the bejeweled brothers are colorfully in the public domain. We are all privy to the antics of Lucy and Michuki plus their intentions. Whereas we cannot claim to have color pictures of an armed Kibaki in the thickets of Kuresoi, as head of state, the jamaa has to take full responsibility….especially when you consider his failure to act decisively against the atrocities being committed amongst the villagers of that forsaken (and govt. forgotten) land. Where's the proper agenda?

    .............................

    It wouldn't work because the relation you insinuate to doesn't exsist, neither can it be achieved through the wild guessing you mentioned. The One ODM created here is about security while PNU can't show Ruto threatening anyone to be killed. Moreover, these clashes are about water and pasture, which can be solved through increasing funds for Arid/semi arid and where it is about land, trying to resettle the people in the most amicable manner. North Eastern is big but people fight over water and it is like that in other areas though If Ntimama is bad and thus may cause ODM some damage in your thinking, thanks that PNU has Moi who supported Ntimama on whatever he did and said. Don't forget total man too, and many other elements.

Domo advert does not mention personalities it just uses tact to send the message home. I think the ODM advert is very bogus and wont sell anywhere.

  25. What they promise is a pipedream. The multiple projects that ODM says they will pursue cannot be financed from the national budget. Their sums just don’t add up.

    - Their infrastructure pledges (they are pledging to invest 10% of GDP) will require 36% of total national expenditure, leaving no resources to pay for public service wages and pensions, health, education and other services.

    - We'd need to double the current budget from 27 percent of GDP to nearly 50 percent of GDP to pay for the projects that ODM has promised. Kenyans would either have to pay twice as much in taxes or depend again on donor support to prop up our economy. It’s retrogressive. We're being asked to revert to the dark days of donor dependency.

    - The ODM's manifesto would lead to three outcomes (i) increased taxation (ii) higher public borrowing, and (iii) economic contraction from the current 6 percent economic growth rate to a "nyayo rate of growth" of between 2-3 percent.

  26. We need leaderes who are sober and know actually what they are telling kenya especially on matters concerning development, business, economy, poverty, equality etc

    Look at the Teusday 20th Daily Nation and you will know that kenya is not the Third most unequal nation, it is the 42nd in the developing countries list, from the world bank and UNDP data. You will also learn that countries with devolved systems are more unequal than unitary states.

    Ruto has been trying to talk the finance, investment and economy talk in ODM but, he really doest understand it all. How can someone tell us that Telkom was being sold within a month? The process began in 2003 and IFC(an agent of the World bank) has been overseeing the process.

    Last week but one Raila wrote to the commissioner general of KRA asking them to waive the tax register compliance rule. And he got his answer that evening from on TV, taxes are the livelihood of the Nation. How does he expect to fulfill his promises without collecting taxes? Kibakis admin is credited of streamlining tax collection and enabling Kenya to be less dependant on foreign aid, does he want to reverse this?

    The Orange group keep telling us that we will pay less for commodities and they will give us free this free that etc, They need to realize that free things are what will make us more poor. People must work hard to earn a living, thats how we develop, thats how we progress. Get free advice from Morris the Clinton Critique, or is he the clinton campaighn champion? and kenya will pay for the next 10 generations.

    We all need to know that what we need most is
    1. Peace, which we already have
    2. Free trade, which we already have
    3. Empowering our people to know that the power to succeed and prosper is within their hands (not politicians)
    4. working hard and owning our country, we have let the hardworking Indians own most things, factories, businesses, schools, etc, what are we doing?
    5. Education; we need to improve our education and change the orientation from academic to professionals. We need to create thinkers, innovation, business pros, etc not more and more degrees.
    6. We need to believe in ourselves and stop whining over our successful brothers. We need to rise and walk the talk. if the son of a peanut hawker rose and became head of NSE by his own merits, and is a member of an investment company that owns most listed companies in Kenya, is it his fault? if a farmers son went to school and succeeded in the banking arena that he began a bank that competes with the Mighty European banks, what is wrong? Put your effort, believe in yourself and stay on course. you will get there.

    Forget about politics, Its not about you or your mother in shags, its not about the guys who die every day on political clashes, IT IS ALL ABOUT A FEW KENYANS approximately 1000 of them whose proffesion is POLITICS!

    Those of you in the Diaspora, especially those who struggle every year to renew their VISA's to keep staying there, YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES AND YOUR COUNTRY. Rudini nyumbani mjenge taifa, whacheni kutangatanga kwa wenyewe. What do you lack at home? 27. Absent Without Leave (AWOL)

    Where is Raila? He left our shores on Monday without saying goodbye. While turmoil surrounded the ODM nominations Raila was catching a plane out of the country.

    It is rumoured that Raila has gone to meet representatives of Energem Resources, a company which owns 55% of Spectre International (the company that owns Kisumu Molasses plant). I assume he’s gone to get more funds from them, possibly in return for a promise to hand them the Kenya Pipeline Company if and when he comes to power?

    The reference in the ODM manifesto to Kenya Pipeline Company as the sole asset that ODM will commercialise, is very conspicuous. Having opposed the privatization of Kengen, Telkom and Safaricom, why now is Raila saying very clearly that he will privatize Kenya Pipeline Company if he is elected president?

    END

  28. Its true bro that wamechimba nje but we cant ignore politics nall the same. These people decide for us very many things and therefore we have to make some contribution.

    Mine is to the PNU diehards. Most of us who contribute here are youths and there4 we have tobe focussed and look at matters over 20yrs ahead of us.

    When your team is playing, you dont judge it by the goals it scores but those it accepts.On this am trying to discourage the those who judge the gvt by the few things it achieved and display this to voters forgeting the immense harms this gvt brought to Kenyans.You have either forgotten or you are deliberately closing one eye.
    TAXES;
    A m working in a busy commercial bank where I deal with peoples payslips like nobdys business. The Moi gvt used to take 2 from us and retun none.This gvt is taking 5 from us and returni 2.So where are we better off according to your calculations? This gvt is overtaxing us.
    The Raila Manifesto doese not say that people dont pay tax but instead spread the tax base to many people so that in tatal we pay less. 10/2=5 and 10/5=2 though the tatal collection is 10.

    SECURITY;
    You have said there is peace and I think its coz you havent been a victim of any of the clashes where ppl have sufferd severely.These3 ppl are fighting for resources and not political as you out it and even if its political, the gvt shd destroy these politicians and ppl leave in peace.

    UNITY;

    When ppl talk of a unified but "NOT UNTILL THE PHILOSOPHY THAT HOLDS ONE TRIBE SUPERIOR AND OTHERS INFERIOR IS FINALLY AND........"Not untill that day then Kenya will be united.Not ,now.

    CRRUPTION;
    Nobody is born corrupt but the system makes him so.Kibaki system has for sure tempted those who are not corrupt to be.

    WASTAGE OF PUBLIC FUNDS;

    The commissions which came out with nothing in the end,the installation of Ringeras KACC,the Anglo leasing etc.

    POOR CABINET APPOINTMENT;

    We thoght this ended with the Moi gvt but we saw it after Refferendum. No MERIT at all.Some were pulled in just after akina so and so demanded,"Whether they work or not, you have to please me."

    DEVOLUTION;

    Its not proper for somebody from Mandera to come to Nairobi for PUBLIC SERVICE job interview and you know it, it should be done Mandera under a devolved gvt.

    FUTURE;

    Do you want to tell me that you are placing your 20yrs future in Njega,Michuki,Awori,Nyachae,Moi and Kibaki?

    INFLATION;

    The gvt says that as economy grows, farmers should be payed more and there4 consumers pay more for local consumables, at this rate, what will the loaf of bread cost at over 10% growth? The gvt shd pay the farmers well and subsidise so that the consumer doese not suffer full burden.

    PAST MISTAKES;

    The PNU is advocating to forget obout past mistakes meaning that past looters ,and land grabbers shd not be touched as it will lead to bloodshed.No wonder Moi and Uhuru are clinging to them.Doese this mean that anybody who will be able to empty public coffers and get away with it shd not be touched ,in the future? There is no present or future without past n thats why we have History.

    PLEASE SHUN TRIBALISM FOR A MOMENT AND REASON PROPERLY.

    that odm would use the clashes in kuresoi and mt elgon to sell themselves is also disturbing.
    i do not believe that this is wise political campaigning. this ad leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth towards odm, that they would glorify the maiming and killing of people for political ends.
    i have been out of kenya and have not understood this odm euphoria and violence which has gripped the nation, but if these are the ways odm has been campaigning, i now understand it.
    this is highly irresponsible and inflammatory campaigning in my personal view. you should not campaign politically with intimidating music and pictures of dead mutilated bodies. that is VERY bad. it is striking fear into people and is in no way whatsoever consructive politically.
    if this is indicative of the way odm have been campaigning it is no surprise what has happened in kenya these past few weeks. it runs like a trailer to a horror movie, not a political advert.
    kumekucha, with all respect, i think this is a very bad and very disturbing ad.
